Aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to work out the mystery.

I know I am an adult, but that will never take away my love for kids' movies -especially Disney movies. When I was asked to review this movie, and I saw the trailer, I couldn't wait to be able to see it -and it didn't disappoint, at all! I really loved this movie very much, and I will recommend it to anyone who asks.

I am going to make this review short and sweet so to not spoil anything about the actual movie or plot:

Let's start with the visuals: the colors and the effects are amazing! I loved them! All the colors were so bright and beautiful, and happy. Yes, Miguel goes to the Land of the Dead, but nothing about it is ominous or dark. Disney did a great job of making this movie not scary, but rather fun, funny, and cheery. I don't think there was a single moment that any of the kids in attendance to the screening (including the one I took with) got scared a single time.

The music: the music was also very cheery and vibrant, and they did a great job in including only Mexican-style music. I was worried that it being an American made and produced movie, they'd get something of the culture wrong, or Americanize it somehow, but they didn't. I myself am not Mexican, but I know about it and have watched plenty of movies and listened to plenty of their music to have an idea (thanks to my dad who taught me all of that). The famous singer in the movie is called Ernesto de la Cruz ("the greatest musician of all time!"), and he reminds of one of the most famous Mexican singers: Vicente Fernandez (look him up!)

The plot: The plot of this movie has, of course, a lot of Disney in it and I feared it would be a cookie-cutter plot...but it really wasn't. It starts off being kind of obvious, but then the plot twists and it throws you off a bit. I also love the topics they addressed: family, following your dreams, and to really get to know someone before you judge. There's just one hiccup in my opinion about the plot: the timeframe of when some of the characters lived is a little off, but that seems to be the only thing that was off.

The characters: I loved the characters in this movie! So much Hispanic sass was portrayed in it, and I loved it. One of the main characters is called Imelda and she is as sassy and strong as most Hispanic women are, and I like to think I am like her, and that I have her sass. The main character, Miguel Rivera, is a very sweet and likable boy who is brave and caring, and makes this movie that much more worth it!

The message: my favorite part of doing reviews is talking about the message of the movie. In this movie, I liked that they gave more importance and true meaning to the message and advice that family members to Miguel. In the past, most Disney movies, the main character defies their parents/family and leave crying because "you'll never understand me", and always ends up being right, while the parents/adults aren't. I never lived that message because it's unrealistic and, in many ways, disrespectful. Than you Disney, for changing that typical plot.

Go check out "Coco" in theaters!!!

Here We Are

Reading Level: Picture Book
Genre: Contemporary
Released: November 2017

Our world can be a bewildering place, especially if you’ve only just got here. Your head will be filled with questions, so let’s explore what makes our planet and how we live on it.

From land and sky, to people and time, these notes can be your guide and start you on your journey. And you’ll figure lots of things out for yourself. Just remember to leave notes for everyone else...

Some things about our planet are pretty complicated, but things can be simple, too: there are lots of us on here, so be kind.
Creatures that Live in Thin Air

Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers is a sweet book that introduces kids to the world, our world. Children are able to learn about space, our land, the sea, air and other facts about our planet. So to add to this introduction, I thought it would be great to talk about couple of creatures that live in thin air.

Alpine swift are known to be able to stay aloft in the air for up to seven months! They have very short legs which are used for clinging to vertical surfaces. They drink on the wing, but roost on vertical cliffs or walls.

Llamas! Yes, these creatures live in grassy open spaces at very high altitudes of 7,400 - 12,800 feet. They have more red blood cells per unit volume of blood than any other mammal.

Himalayan marmot is a marmot found  throughout the Himalayas and on the Tibetan Plateau at elevation from 3,500 to 5,200 m (11,500 to 17,100 ft). They dig large burrows, which generally restricts them to areas with light-textured and adequately deep soil.

Yak (Bos mutus) are  long-haired domesticated bovid in which their coat helps to insulate them in their cold environment. They can lives up to 6,100 m (20,000 ft) and make their homes in treeless areas which are on mountains and plateaus.. Their horns are used to break through the snow and reach
plants.

Oliver Jeffers makes art.

From figurative painting and installation to illustration and picture-book making, Oliver Jeffers’ work takes many forms. His distinctive paintings have been exhibited in multiple cities, including Lazarides Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Brooklyn Museum and Spring Break Fair (Armory Week) in New York, and Gestalten Space in Berlin.

Oliver’s picture books — including The Incredible Book Eating Boy,  This Moose Belongs to Me, The Day Crayons Quit  and its sequel The Day The Crayons Came Home ( both #1 NYTimes Bestsellers)  and Once Upon an Alphabet — have been translated into over 30 languages. Working in collaboration with Studio AKA, Oliver’s second book Lost and Found was developed into an animated short film that has received over sixty awards, including a BAFTA for Best Animated Short Film.

Picture book awards include the The New York Times Best Illustrated Books, Smarties Award, Irish Book of the Year, The Red House Book Award, British Book Design Award, and The Blue Peter Book of the Year. Oliver won a NY Emmy in 2010 for his collaborative work with the artist and director Mac Premo. In 2013 Oliver co-directed with Mac Premo the video for Ordinary Love by U2, and more recently made art for, and helped art direct, U2’s Innocence and Experience World Tour.

Oliver is from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks--and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday.

But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It's then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organization: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart--an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. Movie Review: Justice League - #JusticeLeague

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

The wait is finally over. Justice League is finally here and it was worth the wait. Now begins the wait for all the other future DC movies, which after seeing Justice League, you want the time to speed up of course.

Where does one begin with Justice League? Plus how does one not compromise the movie without giving away too much. So I’ll try and give you enough without giving you the whole movie. Justice League personally for me, had a great timing about it. You got spurts of action, then it would be just simple dialogue and it did that throughout the full movie. It wasn’t super heavy on the battle scenes, we got to witness more than just how well these characters fight. Superheroes have soft sides too, well maybe not Aquaman (lol).

So let’s begin with the beginning and work towards the end. Crime is everywhere! Superman dying cause such angst and despair, that now you have to think before you venture out. Batman is up to his eyeballs in bad guys, and these new bug like robots flying around causing havoc too. Losing their beacon of hope (Superman) really has cause huge turmoil, that you have to wonder how it can be turned around.

Batman as I mentioned is swamp with saving Gotham. Wonder Woman is across the pond also fighting the bad guys. The new faces such as Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg are introduced one at a time. Bruce Wayne must bring together this band of Superheroes, before end of times is upon everyone. When Bruce gets confirmation of what is already upon them, he ask for Diana’s help in recruiting of the rest of the team. This is when Bruce finally gets the story about what is happening from Arthur aka Aquaman. And what is going down is not good at all for mankind.

Once the “Justice League” is formed, this is when the movie really finds its groove. Everyone has a purpose in saving Earth. And if you watched Batman vs. Superman, did you really expect that Superman died for good? If your like me, you know it just can’t be and in Justice League, he does make his return. When and how, you’ll just have to see to know.

Other characters you will get a glimpse off for future DC movies are Shazam, Deathstoke and Queen Mera. You pretty much cheer and/or clap every time you see someone new make a camo. Deathstroke was probably the loudest cheering of them all. Justice League fans really like their villains.

As far as the new guys on the team, I loved Barry Allen aka the Flash. His jokes are pretty funny when least expected. He was a great casting choice for that part. I thought I would have a hard time accepting this Flash, since I’m a big fan of The CW’s tv version. Then let’s talk Cyborg, my heart broke for his back story. The kid had it all and then lost it, to wake up a machine. He needed the Justice League! So Victor aka Cyborg finds a purpose in life again after being transformed by his father Silas that worked at S.T.A.R. Labs. Then we go to the Arthur aka Aquaman, his character tripped me out. He doesn’t want to show that deep down inside past those muscles and tattoos, lies a soft spot. Loved his snark, and the “pitch fork” too, as Batman called it. In my opinion all the characters, new and old, have good chemistry in this film.

So I know your wondering if I’m gonna talk about Clark aka Superman at all. Well if you believe that Superman is dead and wasn’t coming back, then “what is wrong with you?”. Of course he comes back, how, when and why, I already said I won’t give away. But the Man of Steel does come back to us and once again the people will have their beacon. I want to say so much more but you’ll thank me for staying quiet about Superman. I want you to feel everything I felt when he returned to us.

Justice League is a great beginning to what is to come from DC. Jack Snyder delivers once again, but he does lighten the “mood” in Justice League compared to Batman vs. Superman. I don’t have to tell anyone to go see it, I know you all will. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
