Book Tour: Guest Post by Tracy Deebs Author of Tempest Rising

Tempest Rising Book Blog Tour

Today we welcome Author Tracy Deebs to the blog. Her stop today here brings us a guest post and a wonderful giveaway. Tracy is offering one winner the chance to win a summer lotion bath set from Victoria Secrets. So help me welcome her and enjoy reading the post.

First off, thanks Yara, for having me. I really appreciate it. There are a lot of books throughout my lifetime that have touched me, inspired me, made me think. I’m one of those people who love books, the characters in them and the ideas that they set forth. Which is why, when I got this prompt, I spent a lot of time thinking about books that I’ve read—in the past—and the present—that really got to me. Books that got their hooks in, worked their way inside of me and wouldn’t let go. The conclusion I reached, was that I can’t name just one. There have simply been too many.

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson

The Awakening by Kate Chopin

These are just a few off the top of my head—books that changed how I viewed the world or the way I fit into it. But since we’re talking about young adult books today—books that Yara reads and books that I write—I thought it would be fitting if I chose one book that I’ve read in the last year that really blew my mind. For me, that book is Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.

I picked Little Brother up on a whim and was hooked from the first page. In Winston, his main character, Doctorow creates a smart, funny, well-intentioned narrator. He’s a genuine nice guy, but one who refuses to lie down and let the government roll over him. He sees something wrong and he tries to fix it.

The basic premise of the book is that Winston and his friends are in San Francisco (ditching school) when a huge bomb goes off. As they try to flee the BART station (train station) they are picked up by the military, detained and tortured for the next few days—all because Winston is a computer genius. When they are finally released, his best friend is near dead and the girl he likes is an emotional mess. Winston decides that it isn’t right that the government should have been able to pick them up and do what it did to them—not in a free country and one where the Constitution is supposed to be prized.

From that point on, Winston becomes Little Brother—the guy who does everything he can to make sure that Big Brother doesn’t have the right to abuse its people. He takes on the establishment—and his parents—all to ensure that we have the freedoms guaranteed to us. This book touched me on so many different levels. Winston was a genuine, deep-down good guy, couched in hacker clothes and a kick-butt attitude (exactly my kind of guy, lol). Add to that the fact that Doctorow is an incredible, smart, funny writer and Little Brother was my idea of an incredible read.

Tempest Rising

Pages: 352 pgs
Reading Level: YA
Publisher: Walker Books for Young Readers

Summary: (from goodreads) Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.
