Summary: (from goodreads) When Sam's dad whisks him and his brother off to a remote beach town for the summer, he's all for it-- at first. Sam soon realizes, though, that this place is anything but ordinary. Time seems to slow down around here, and everywhere he looks, there are beautiful blond girls. Girls who seem inexplicably drawn to him.

Then Sam meets DeeDee, one of the Girls, and she's different from the others. Just as he starts to fall for her, she pulls away, leaving him more confused than ever. He knows that if he's going to get her back, he'll have to uncover the secret of this beach and the girls who live here.

You should know that I'm an out liner. I always have to write something good, something bad and explain in a few words why I did or didn't like it. I know dumb, but it helps me write out my full review. I went back and re-read September Girls just to get a different feel for it and find something positive about it. I honestly couldn't find one thing.

Sam's mother has just walked out of his life and his father is having a midlife crisis. His dad decides to quit his job, sell everything and take his boys on vacation. As soon as they get there Sam feels like there's something off about this little island, not only are there hundreds of beautiful girls all over the place but they all seem to be drawn to him. He's completely taken aback by it and thinks it's weird. That all changes when he meets DeeDee. He feels this instant connection to her, but the closer he wants to get to her the further she pulls away.

Everything thing about September Girls is one big disaster. I'm pretty indifferent about the book itself, but it is really sexist. I'm pretty sure this book is gonna piss some people off. Be warned there is A LOT of swearing and sexual talk. On another note, there is absolutely no plot what-so-ever. Sam wakes up, walks on the beach, girls throw themselves at him, he's weirded out by it, goes home to and does it all over again the next day. It's literally one hot mess. Sam's thoughts might seem realistic to what you would expect a teenage boy to think but I couldn't make any connection to him. I couldn't make any connection to any of the characters.

As for the so called "Girls" passages, I found myself having to re-read those parts because I felt like I had no idea what I was reading. They were so cryptic that you found yourself scratching your head and saying "What in the world did I just read?"

I went into this book open-minded and excited about it. The cover and the summary made it out to be a fun summer read about mermaids. That my friend is not the case.

  1. I've seen a couple of reviews where people managed to be positive despite disliking the book overall and I'm so impressed with them for I loathed this book and that's what I had to write. I think this is a very fair review and thanks for sharing your thoughts!
