After being pushed to excel her entire life, high school basketball star Genna Pierce is finally where she wants to be. University scouts are taking notice, her team is on its way to the state tourney, and Jake Butler, the hot boy she's daydreamed about since ninth grade, is showing some definite interest. When he asks her out and their relationship takes off, Genna believes things can't get better.

Then, it's over.

A freak accident ends her career before it's even begun. Her parents are fighting more than ever, her friends don't understand what she's going through, and she's not sure who she is without basketball. And while he tries to be there for her, Genna doesn't understand how Jake could ever want the broken version of the girl he fell for.

Her life in a tailspin, Genna turns to the only solace that eases her pain: Vicodin.

If you are looking for a true to life story, this is as close as you can get. Genna Pierce is an 18 year old senior in high school. Genna knows one thing for sure ... basketball is her life. She has yet to have a serious boyfriend, as basketball keeps her occupied and happy, despite what is going on in her home life. Her parents marriage is falling apart. Heartbroken, she finds a new passion, Jake Butler. Jake is the hottest boy in the school, with whom she has been in love with for years. Since ninth grade, to be exact.

Genna and her high school team are steadily on their way to the top, they are going to the state tournament! Now with Jake in her life, she is on top of the world. The boy that she has pined over for the last few years is finally hers. Can her life get any better than this? It is the best feeling in the world! Love and basketball, what more could a girl ask for? The tournament is not only exciting, but there are college scouts watching. YES!! While playing, devastation hits. Genna is jumping to dunk the ball, when a player from the opposing team does the same. As Genna lands, her ankle goes one way as her knee goes the other. SNAP. Genna knows that this break means the end of basketball. The end of her dream. The end of her career. The end of life as she knows it.

Her life takes a downward spiral when she turns to Vicodin for the answer to her pain, both mentally and physically. Genna turns into someone she doesn't recognize and starts second guessing her relationship with Jake. How in the world can Jake love her, when she doesn't' love herself? She doesn't like the girl that she sees. That Genna, is long gone. Can Jake bring back the girl that he knows and loves? Can he save her? Does she want to be saved? This story of Genna is a story that many parents know all too well. Drugs are simply not the answer, whether it is prescription or not. I recommend this book to all young adults, seeing as it is so relatable on so many levels. A true story of a teenage life and the struggles that are common to way too many. A job well done Kendra C. Highley, you have gained another satisfied and thrilled reader. Happy reading!

  1. When I started reading the synopsis, I was expecting the book to be a lighthearted YA read. Then I hit the line about vicodin use. On my TBR list now! Hopefully the book has a happy ending, despite the character going through personal struggles.

  3. It's not exactly the type of book that I usually read, but I'm always open to new books.
