Interview with Felicity Heaton

OUaT: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a paranormal romance writer, although I have been known to dabble in science fiction romance. I’ve been writing since 2005, and went indie in 2006, before all the cool kids were doing it. I’ve written over forty-five books in my career as a writer, and around forty of those are still available. I love to write passionate paranormal romances, with high-octane action, intense emotion, and heroes who will make your toes curl!

At the moment, I have two major series on the go and one I completed this year, and one that is about to begin on November 30th. The completed series is the Vampire Erotic Theatre series, with the delicious heroes of Vampirerotique, London’s premier naughty theatre for vampires. The ongoing series are the Her Angel series with my take on sexy passionate angels determined to protect their women from a terrible game between Heaven and Hell, and the Vampires Realm series, which is packed with twisting plots, vampires to die for, and is a huge world encompassing ten books at present. My new series is Eternal Mates, which is set in the same world as the Vampire Erotic Theatre but it takes a look at the wider world outside the theatre, with all manner of fae and demon species, and plenty of hot-blooded alpha heroes determined to have their mates.

OUaT: How did you choose the genre you write in?

I’ve loved paranormal genre stuff since I was really young, like just starting to read young. I have book reports where I call every book boring unless it has vampires, werewolves, witches or monsters in it! I was hooked at an early age and it has stayed with me throughout my life. My passion for it only grew in strength when I read the classics as a teen, devouring Dracula and Frankenstein, and reading H P Lovecraft and Poe. I read classic romances too, like Jane Eyre, North and South, Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice too. I think I began to blend those two very separate genres, falling for vampires and other creatures of the night, imagining worlds where they existed. They’ve always fascinated me and I’m happiest when I’m writing about them because I love doing something different, twisting accepted norms into something new, playing with mythical creatures and history. It’s amazing fun and I can spend hours just figuring out the finer details about the breed of vampires in a series, or crafting their world, layering in the details that makes it feel real to readers. In paranormal, the possibilities are endless, only limited by my imagination, and my imagination loves to push the boundaries.

OUaT: Do you ever experience writer’s block?

I experience a sort of writer’s block. I like to think of it as writer’s doubt. I’m sure most authors experience it so they know what I’m talking about. It’s that moment when you’re writing and you’re suddenly hit with the awful sense that what you’ve written is total rubbish and terrible and everyone is going to hate it. It’s a demon on my shoulder every time that I write, but I’ve found that the perfect cure for this problem is going back to the beginning of the book and reading it over. Normally, that makes me see that the book is far better than that little demon is telling me.

The other thing that always slows me down is when I hit a scene that I haven’t really plotted out. It can bring me to a dead stop. The antidote to that one is to sit and think about what’s going to happen, jot down some notes and then go from there.

I’m finding more and more this year that pressure can really slow me down too. I feel an enormous amount of pressure to put out the best book ever and sometimes it can really cramp my style and make the words dry up.

OUaT: Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I write outlines for all of my books, compiled from all the notes / scenes I’ve written down while working on other stories and then filling in the gaps. Sometimes, my outlines end up huge! I’ve just completed the first draft of Claimed by a Demon King, which is the second book in the Eternal Mates series. The outline for that book was around 25,000 words. That just shows you how serious I am about plotting before writing. The outline was a quarter of the length of the first draft of the book! It really helps me work in any plot twists and misdirection if I plan it all out in advance.

OUaT: Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

My next book is the first book in the Eternal Mates series. Kissed by a Dark Prince comes out on November 30th and it’s about the dark elf prince, Loren, and his millennia-old feud with an enemy bent on killing him and destroying his kingdom. When Loren is knocked unconscious and dumped on the inspection table of Olivia, a scientist working with the demon-hunting organisation Archangel, she thinks it’s her lucky night and sees her mystery man as a way of redeeming herself with her superiors. Loren comes around and can’t resist tapping her carotid for some life giving fluids to help him heal. That one bite changes their lives forever because she’s his one true mate and not only has he bound her to him, but he’s weakened himself and dragged her into the crossfire between him and his enemy… exactly as his enemy had planned. It’s a race against time for them to find a way to break the bond, but can Loren really sacrifice the one thing he’s been waiting millennia for—his mate?

OUaT: Did you design the cover?

Yes, I design all my covers. Having a degree in graphic design and a talent in that field has helped immensely. I love being able to design my own covers because no one knows the book like I do. I can really capture something about the book on the cover.

OUaT: What project are you working on now?

At the moment, I’m working on the second draft edits of Claimed by a Demon King, which is the second book in the Eternal Mates series. That one is due to come out in February 2014. I’m also in the planning stages on several others books for my other series.

OUaT: Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?

I would love to revisit many of my characters. I do write flash fiction for many of them, or short stories catching up with them. It’s great writing a series because I always get to revisit characters in them. I get to show readers what has been happening in their lives. I’m really enjoying writing the Eternal Mates series right now because I get to sneak characters from my Vampire Erotic Theatre series into some of the books, and I love being able to do that. I also know that readers will love the little cameos and catch ups because the Vampire Erotic Theatre series is officially completed now. With no more books due in

that series, they can read the Eternal Mates series to have a little peek into what’s happening at the theatre.
