Iron Pendulum
Periodic #2
Author: Megan Curd
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Science Fiction | Dystopia
Released: August 28th 2014

A month ago, Avery thought the world ended outside Dome Four. Thought she was one of the few of her kind. Thought the war that brought the human race to the brink of extinction was over.

But a month can change everything.

After fighting to escape a tyranny she didn't even know existed, Avery has had to come to grips with all the secrets she's uncovered. But more secrets continue to come to light, revealing how little of her world she truly knew. When evidence starts to show that Dome Four might be under siege, Avery knows what she must do.

Returning to the dome she longed to escape is a challenge for Avery, but now she knows there’s corruption lurking in the shadows. A massive steam shortage leaves half the dome without power, and people are falling ill. Dying.

And they’re blaming Avery.

A month can change everything. One more month could kill everyone. The clock is ticking.

Iron Pendulum was on heck of a reading ride. I love a good book that doesn’t go into microscopic details yet provides enough so you can picture everything while reading. Megan Curd’s writing allows you to do this. And I adore her for this. To be honest, I really wasn’t sure what direction Megan would take in the sequel of Steel Lily, but it is safe to say she did a great job with Iron Pendulum.

Bond, Avery Bond, should be the correct name. Ha! So Iron Pendulum takes us back to Dome 4. If you’ve read Steel Lilly, then you know Avery “escape” from there. But she is sent back to find out why this dome has changed after she left. Along with Jaxon and Alice, Avery is to go undercover to try and figure out how this dome has gone to ruin. As the days go by, people from the “lower class” of this dome are getting sick and are in need to wear their masks more often.  While the Elite side of the dome are safe and sound. So what is going on? How can Avery figure out the truth before anyone figures out she is spying? Worst of all, how will Avery let her emotions aside while Jaxon undercover job is to charm away Erin, the girl that replace Avery’s place. Sure, you may think this may be an easy task, but to be considered as a traitor, earning trust is hard. And to save this dome, she must earn the trust of the people she left behind.

It was fun seeing the gang back. What I enjoyed the most is their undercover jobs. It felt like I was watching a James Bond movie. With the actions and crazy twist of the story, Iron Pendulum was fun. Even though Avery and Jaxon did the work, I have to say my favorite character was Sari. This girl got some mad hacking skills! Without her, I don’t think the gang would’ve last long in Dome 4. Without her help, they wouldn’t have uncovered the truth.

Iron Pendulum was such a fun read and a great sequel. The ending was…. The ending was devastating. Ugh, so much betrayal! UGH! I cannot wait for the third installment because that cliffhanger is not a nice one. At. All. But overall I would recommend that you start reading Steel Lilly to enjoy Iron Pendulum!

My father said there were two things certain in life before World War III: death and taxes.

After the war it was death and lies.

“Earth to Avery, care to tell us which tunnel to take?” A voice buzzed in the earpiece of my new oxygen mask.

Sari’s eyes were hidden by the polarized lenses of her mask, but her voice revealed her amused annoyance. Alice stood nearby, arms crossed. There was no need to see their expressions; I could feel impatience rolling off both of them like heat waves. We’d been sent down here to map out the tunnels and see if there were any cracks in the headquarter’s defenses for months; over the past few weeks, though, it had begun to feel as though we were being given the task to keep us busy. There were only so many more times we could venture further out, finding nothing, before Lexie, the leader of the Alliance, was going to have to give us a new mission—maybe one with a little more purpose.

Maybe one that could let me check on everyone in Dome Four, I thought.
