In DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL, based on the record-breaking book series, a family road trip to attend Meemaw’s 90th birthday party goes hilariously off course--thanks to Greg’s newest scheme to (finally!) become famous.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is the fourth movie in the series based on Jeff Kinney's super-popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books, but it has an all-new cast. In this installment, Greg Heffley (now played by Jason Drucker), his older brother, Rodrick (played by Charlie Wright); and their toddler sibling, Manny (Wyatt and Dylan Walters), are dragged by their parents (Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott) on a lengthy trip to visit their Grandmother for her 90th birthday when chaos ensues. The two older boys conspire on a plan to take a detour to a video game conference, where Greg hopes to repair damage done by a viral video that made him infamous.

Needless to say, nothing goes as planned. But along the way, there are plenty of poop, pee, and vomit jokes along with a super cute pig who ends up being the cleverest character in the story. There's a running theme of putting technology aside to better enjoy family time, which I like and appreciate being the key message in a kids movie. And although much of the behavior in the movie isn't particularly admirable, the characters do come together in the end.

Overall, it is an enjoyable move for the family and has laugh-out-loud moments with a surprisingly faithful homage to the iconic shower scene in Hitchcock’s Psycho and overall focusing on physical comedy instead of traditional jokes. I cannot say The Long Haul is as strong as it’s predecessors, but an enjoyable movie all the same.
