Book Review: Ryan’s Bed by Tijan

RYAN'S BED
Author: Tijan
Reading Level: New Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Released: January 22, 2018
Review Source: ARC provided by author

I crawled into Ryan Jensen’s bed that first night by accident.

I barely knew him. I thought it was his sister’s bed—her room. It took seconds to realize my error, and I should've left...

I didn’t.
I didn’t jump out.
I didn’t get embarrassed.
I relaxed.
And that night, in that moment, it was the only thing I craved.

I asked to stay. He let me, and I slept.

The truth? I never wanted to leave his bed. If I could've stayed forever, I would have.
He became my sanctuary.

Because—four hours earlier—my twin sister killed herself.

This is my first ever book by Tijan. I was captured from the very beginning. My first impression of Tijan is - WOWWWWWWWW - all the f'in feels. Tijan evoked emotions in me I haven't felt in a long time. I will most definitely be reading all the books. I can only imagine what else is in store!

So, Ryan's Bed talks about very heavy subjects.  I went in blind, which is how I normally like it, so I was a little surprised by the storyline (in a good way).  I am obsessed with Ryan's character. He Is just so supportive, kind, gorgeous, and super athletic. Every single time he went out of his way to comfort Mac, I swooned. He is absolutely the perfect male specimen. He didn't have a single quality I didn't like. Mac has been through what no one should ever have to go through. She loses her twin sister suddenly and unexpectedly to suicide, and this story is about how she copes and heals. I think she is an extremely strong person. I love her and there are so many times while reading that I wanted to reach in the book and give her a big hug.

Ryan and Mac's relationship was born out of mutual grief but bloomed into something truly magical. You could feel the love they had for one another on every page. I also really like Ryan's friends: Nick, Tom, Cora, and Kirk. They are all very supportive of one another, all dealing with their own experiences of grief.

I am rating this book 4.5 stars because it was so so good and I loved it! It made me smile, cry, laugh, and made my heart ache. It was not what I was expecting at all, in an amazing way. It was a refreshing change of pace. Not your typical romance. I highly recommend this book! Gooooo one click!

Movie Review: Maze Runner: The #DeathCure

Maze Runner: The Death Cure
Release date: January 26, 2018 (USA)
Director: Wes Ball
Cast: Dylan O'Brien, Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario
Film series: Maze Runner
Screenplay: T.S. Nowlin, based upon the novel “The Death Cure” by James Dashner
In the epic finale to The Maze Runner Saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary last city, a WCKD controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get the answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze. Will Thomas and the crew make it out alive? Or will Ava Paige get her way?

For a while it seemed that every YA dystopian novel was going to be turned into a movie franchise. The Hunger Games was probably the most successful of the dystopian book to theater endeavors.  On the other end of the scale, Divergent opened big, but its final chapter will never see a theatrical release. At least the Maze Runner series has been successful enough to bring its final chapter to the big screen and fans of the series will not be disappointed by Maze Runner : The Death Cure.

Death Cure is popcorn movie fun. From the first wild chase scene by the train, with all of the gadgets and action glory to the grand fire in the WCKD city, Death Cure is entertaining.   The film makes-up for what it lacks in substance, by adding flashy action scenes.  The zombie chases and car explosions are exciting. The visual and special effects are well done. The pacing of the action action scenes is tight enough that the movie didn't feel long.

All of the favorite Gladers are back for the newest adventure. Thomas (played by Dylan O'Brien), Newt (played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster), and Minho (played by Ki Hong Lee) all have pivotal roles. The least favorite Gladers are back, too.  Teresa (played by Kaya Scodelario) and Gally (played by Will Poulter) attempt to redeem themselves. The cast has genuine likability and great energy. Newt's scenes, especially, really tug at the audience's heart strings.

That the film is as enjoyable as it was is due, in large part, to the efforts of the cast. Sadly, like the previous installments, there is little character development. At this point in the saga, it's too late to explain the motives or delve into character feelings, so Death Cure doesn't try. The movie is still enjoyable, even if it never achieved it's full potential. It is a satisfying last chapter.

The film is gentle enough for the entire family. It presents positive themes, like teamwork, duty and forgiveness. Teens and tweens will love catching-up with all the characters from their favorite novel series. The film's special effects looked great on the big screen. Anyone who has seen the first two installments should be equally excited for the last chapter in the saga. Maze Runner : The Death Cure is playing everywhere now.

Book Review: Blood Fury by J.R. Ward

Blood Fury
Black Dagger Legacy #3
Author: J. R. Ward
Reading Level: Adult Fiction
Genres: Paranormal Romance
Released: January 9th 2018
Review Source: Ballantine Books

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this sexy paranormal romance novel set in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward tells the story of two couples—both fighting to find love in the midst of the war with the Lessening Society.

A vampire aristocrat, Peyton is well aware of his duty to his bloodline: mate with an appropriate female of his class and carry on his family’s traditions. And he thought he’d found his perfect match—until she fell in love with someone else. Yet when his split-second decision in a battle with the enemy endangers the life of another trainee, Peyton has to face the idea that his future, and his heart, actually lie with another.

Novo, as a female in the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training program, feels like she has to prove herself to everybody—and she has no interest in being distracted by falling in love. But when Peyton proves to be so much more than a rich playboy, she is forced to confront the tragedy that has broken her soul and closed her off from love.

As the two grapple with Novo’s past and Peyton’s present, another couple must contend with a connection that is unparalleled—and potentially scandalous. Saxton, who has had his heart broken, discovers in himself a deep-seated attraction to Ruhn, a new member of the household. But will the other male explore the connection? Or will he close his mind and his heart to what could be true love . . . and cost Saxton everything?

Blood Fury was fantastic, its been a minute since I have read anything that I felt really grabbed me from the 1st page. Blood Fury is probably my favorite Legacy book to date. There was just so much I loved in the books. I would have not mind one bit, if Ward would have written two different books, so we could have more of Novo & Peyton and Saxton & Ruhn. I would have enjoyed it, I just couldn't decided between the 2 pairs, which pair I loved more.

Blood Fury as you know is the 3rd book in the Legacy series, and it follows the trainees that the Brothers are getting ready for the war that continues with the Lessening Society. It really great to see the trainees grow as fighters every new book. And I like learning about each of them personally, so you can see under all their layers. The cool thing about this book, they are now going out in the field and fighting alongside the Brothers now. Which then means, we get to read about more interaction with the Brothers. This makes me very happy.

In Blood Fury, I mentioned it focuses on 2 sets of people. I can't tell you who I loved more. It was equal between them. So yes, everyone gets their HEA, but the one, that probably struck the most, is Saxton. Since he isn't new to me as a character, I've had years to grow attached to him, just like the Brothers. So when Saxton, lost the love of his life to another. It did break our hearts even though, we know he truly never really had him, since Blay was always meant to be with Qhuinn. So I always hoped, in the future he would find someone new. Blood Fury finally granted my wish for Saxton. So when Ruhn happens, this was fantastic. Finally, Saxton gets his HEA. Now granted it wasn't easy, but once they hit some speed bumps, they finally can be with each other. You'll just have to read the book, to see how their relationship kicks off.

Then the next duo we focus on is Novo and Peyton. These two, you either want to slap them, or give them high fives. Talk about being hard headed, if you look in the dictionary, you'll see Novo and Peyton, pictured. But once, they begin to shed some of their tough layers, magic starts to happen. Not, giving details, but things do get very bad before they get very good.

If you haven't started the Legacy series, what are you waiting for? Plus, I feel like you need to read these to continue in the correct order of things. You want to make sure you have no gaps in timeline.

Blog Tour: Keep Her Safe by K.A. Tucker

Keep Her Safe
Author: K.A. Tucker
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Released: January 23rd 2018
Publisher: Atria Books

Making a Murderer meets Scandal in this story of police corruption, family secrets, and illicit affairs from bestselling author K.A. Tucker, celebrated for her “propulsive plot twists and searing seduction” (USA TODAY).

Noah Marshall has known a privileged and comfortable life thanks to his mother, the highly decorated chief of the Austin Police Department. But all that changes the night she reveals a skeleton that's been rattling in her closet for years, and succumbs to the guilt of destroying an innocent family's life. Reeling with grief, Noah is forced to carry the burden of this shocking secret.

Gracie Richards wasn't born in a trailer park, but after fourteen years of learning how to survive in The Hollow, it's all she knows anymore. At least here people don't care that her dad was a corrupt Austin cop, murdered in a drug deal gone wrong. Here, she and her mother are just another family struggling to survive...until a man who clearly doesn't belong shows up on her doorstep.

Despite their differences, Noah and Gracie are searching for answers to the same questions, and together, they set out to uncover the truth about the Austin Police Department's dark and messy past. But the scandal that emerges is bigger than they bargained for, and goes far higher up than they ever imagined.

Complex, gritty, sexy, and thrilling, Keep Her Safe solidifies K.A. Tucker's reputation as one of today's most talented new voices in romantic suspense.

K.A. Tucker is a favorite author of mine. She has a talent to captive me with her stories from the very first page. And Keep Her Safe is another book to say I really enjoyed.

Keep Her Safe follows the story of another police corruption. Yet like other stories, we have two main characters, in which we read their POV's and we follow their thought and ways of discovering hidden secrets. It's a suspenseful story that will go back to the past to give you hints of what went down years ago, and how an innocent cop was named corrupted. Although it was thrilling, the story is a bit predictable of who is the killer and what the secret is. But don't let this fool you because our main characters, Gracie and Noah, will keep you on your toes.

Gracie is determine firecracker, in which you cannot say no to. She knows what's right from wrong and is willing to follow her heart with no hesitation. As for Noah, he is a sweet hottie. He's been thru so much and you will have a soft spot for him right away. But what will make you fall in love with him is dedication to help others, even when he needs help. These two will make have you swooning left and right. Even though their romance was built - slowly but surely. It was very realistic and raw.

As I mentioned, the story is a predictable but it's still enjoyable. You still get your twist and turns, your lies and betrayals. It's a story you don't want to miss out!

Born in small-town Ontario, Kathleen published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons. She is a voracious reader and the farthest thing from a genre-snob, loving everything from High Fantasy to Chick Lit. Kathleen currently resides in a quaint small town outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures.

MOLLY’S GAME is based on the true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.

Aaron Sorkin's Molly's Game is an exercise in all things Aaron Sorkin, for better or worse. The writer of A Few Good Men, The Social Network, and t.v.'s The West Wing takes a stab at directing the powerhouse cast of Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba and Kevin Costner in a larger than life biopic about Molly Bloom's rise and fall in the world of high-stakes poker. Don't worry; Aaron Sorkin also wrote Molly's Game, so he hasn't given-up writing for directing.

It doesn't so much matter that Molly Bloom is a real person or that the movie is based on real events. In Sorkin's world,  the real people are all turned into fast-talking, wry and intelligent characters who can deliver monologues like no body's business.

To deliver his tightly written monologues, Sorkin relied on excellent casting. Chastain (as Molly) has previously proven herself an expert at delivering powerful dialogue. Think Miss Sloane or Zero Dark Thirty. She carries the role of Molly perfectly. Chastain was very believable as both an Olympic quality skier and as a poker game host.  Costner (as Larry Bloom, Molly's dad) is equally strong and convincing in his father role. The give and take between Costner and Chastain were the best scenes in the film.

By constant, the scenes between Elba (as Charlie Jaffey, Bloom's lawyer) and Chastain were not as interesting. Elba has a slow, rugged quality that slowed down the action. The pacing of the plot felt uneven. Elba delivered too many lines with dramatic pauses. The smoldering good looks aside, it got old.

The poker got old, too. At first, the audience is drawn-in by the voyeuristic intrigue of peeking into a foreign, secret world. There's a poker game. There's a ton of money at stake. There's also a power struggle. That was interesting. Quickly, the action turned self-indulgent and self-destructive.  The plot became unrelatable, so far from reality that it became uninteresting.  And then, there was another poker game and another and another. Seems like there had to have been more issues in Bloom's life, but all the audience saw was poker.

Still, from the prologue on to the court judgment, Sorkin's writing makes it entertaining to watch Bloom navigate the underbelly world of illegal gambling. The three stars of Molly's Game are always worth watching. And the story is a part of Americana. It might be a worthwhile time at a theater, for fans of Sorkin or fans of poker. Molly's Game is in limited release now.

Blog Tour: Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh + Q&A

Welcome to our tour stop for Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh! This tour includes a giveaway courtesy of PenguinTeen.

Reign of the Fallen
Author: Sarah Glenn Marsh
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: January 23rd 2018
Publisher: Razorbill

Odessa is one of Karthia's master necromancers, catering to the kingdom's ruling Dead. Whenever a noble dies, it's Odessa's job to raise them by retrieving their souls from a dreamy and dangerous shadow world called the Deadlands. But there is a cost to being raised--the Dead must remain shrouded, or risk transforming into zombie-like monsters known as Shades. If even a hint of flesh is exposed, the grotesque transformation will begin.

A dramatic uptick in Shade attacks raises suspicions and fears among Odessa's necromancer community. Soon a crushing loss of one of their own reveals a disturbing conspiracy: someone is intentionally creating Shades by tearing shrouds from the Dead--and training them to attack. Odessa is faced with a terrifying question: What if her necromancer's magic is the weapon that brings Karthia to its knees?

There are few things that I do not like, zombies is one of them. I don't like how they look, I don't like how they sound, they're just creepy. I wouldn't say I am scared of them but they're seriously something I do not like. Then why in the world did I read this book? To be honest, the description intrigued me. And I am glad I did not let my dislike of zombie stop me from reading this action-ish fantasy story.

From badass heroine, kickass scenes, and WTF is going on, Reign of the Fallen is a fast read that will have you speeding thru those pages. The story covers how a kingdom survives on necromancy, thanks to our heroine, Odessa. She sets on a journey to hunt one of the most deadliest Shades in her land. What is a shades? It's a monstrous zombie. It was quite a journey and Odessa had to learn how to cope with tough situations.

Reign of the Fallen is a unique story. Not only does it tackle necromancy, but it deals with addiction, depression, how to cope with loss and LGBT romance. It doesn't go in deep, but the story will continue and it ends with room for expansion. The story has a quick pace and the world building is rich. It's an epic journey you wouldn't want to miss on.

Q&A

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your book?

Certainly! Hey everyone, I’m Sarah Glenn Marsh—SGM for short, or if you want to be like my nana, you can call me, “Sarah Glenn!”

In addition to being the author of YA books like Fear the Drowning Deep and the Reign of the Fallen series, I’m also the author of seven forthcoming children’s picture books. You can look for Selfie Sebastian and A Campfire Tail next year in the spring! When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my little my family: my husband, four rescued greyhounds (who are all seniors—if you don’t adopt a senior dog, you’re truly missing out!), three birds, and tons of fish including a dinosaur bichir named Salazar Slytherin, who often goes by the nickname of Giant Murder Eel. I also love crafty things like painting, playing video and strategy games, and playing Pokémon Go with the local group I help run! (Yes, people still play it. And I’ve made some awesome friends through it- from teens to seniors!).

And now, here’s a little about Reign of the Fallen: the story follows Odessa, a talented teen necromancer who raises the dead in order to keep the current ruling family of her country in power. King Wylding has been in charge of Karthia for over 200 years, and he keeps coming back from the dead because he loves his people—however, since the Dead fear change, his rules forbidding all science and progress are hurting them more than helping. When Odessa's fellow necromancers (her only family) start being picked off one by one, she's devastated, but she'll have to work through her grief in order to find the murderer and decide whether her crumbling society is worth saving...or if it's time to help Karthia change, for better or worse.
What makes Reign of the Fallen stand out from other books you've written or read before?

As a teen, I loved epic fantasies like Lord of the Rings, yet I never saw myself represented in anyone going on the quests. Rarely were the heroes in those stories female, and even less often were they queer—specifically, bisexual. Or if they were, they were usually side characters who perpetuated harmful stereotypes. So when building the world of Reign, I wanted to offer all teens a safe space where they could see themselves while exploring some heavy topics like death and loss and addiction.

After all, when building any new world, there is absolutely nothing forcing us to apply the gender norms of our society to a fictional one; the same goes for how we treat every sexual identity other than heterosexual. Why build a new world that holds all our old prejudices?

So that’s what stands out to me most about Reign: that it’s a book about queer people dealing with zombies and monsters, rather than queer people dealing with discrimination from others, and that it features a heroine who shares my identity as bisexual. Teen me would have loved a role model like Odessa—someone who actually makes mistakes; someone who’s drawn to whoever she’s drawn to, and unapologetically so at that; someone whose humanity endures even through great struggles and hardships.
What were your biggest challenges in writing Reign of the Fallen?

Two challenging things come to mind, so I’ll tell you briefly about both:

First, when I wrote the original draft of Reign, I didn’t have the corpse-and-spirit-eating monsters, the Shades, described much—only vaguely. But then my editor pushed me to describe them in more detail, and uh…let’s just say I went there, and wound up giving myself nightmares as a result!

The second challenge was writing a certain spoiler-filled scene. It was so heart-wrenching that it actually made me cry, and I struggle to re-read it to this day!

What’s the most interesting/exciting thing you’ve done in the name of research?
This wasn’t part of the research for Reign, but rather, for a just-for-fun book I’m starting to work on now that might involve an Irish princess with ownvoices rep for bisexuality and anxiety…as for what I did for this project? Well, I went to Ireland for two weeks with my husband. We drove around the countryside, visited castles and ancient monasteries, and ate amazing food. I mean, I’d always wanted to go to Ireland, and I’d always wanted to write a story set there, too—and I have to say, I’m really glad I went because photos don’t do Ireland’s beauty justice.

Do you incorporate yourself into your characters? If so which character are you most like?

I have a feeling—just a feeling, mind, I can’t speak for every author—that most people wind up putting a little something of themselves into each character they create, if only subconsciously. There are certain things I share with several of the Reign characters, such as Simeon’s tendency toward jokes in moments of tension, Meredy’s stubbornness, Valoria’s love of learning, and Odessa’s temper…

However, I think I’m most like Evander. He’s a big dreamer, and I’m the same. He romanticizes adventure, loves getting outdoors to take in all the beauty of his surroundings, and also struggles under the weight of his mother’s expectations and dreams for him, trying to reconcile those with his own. That’s something most people can probably relate to—wanting to please your loved ones, yet also wanting to ensure your own happiness at the same time. That can be a difficult balance, and I sometimes felt that as a teen. I will say, though, I’m not half the daredevil Evander is!

There are many books out there, is there one that you said to yourself "Man I wish I had written that!"

Harry. Freaking. Potter. Need I say more? ;) Beyond the obvious reasons of why—I grew up alongside Harry, and got swept up in the magic—HP was so unique in how it went from MG to YA in later books; I don’t think there have been many other series like that (although, if I’m forgetting some, feel free to tell me in the comments!)

What are 3 things you must have while traveling?
*Water bottle –hydration is fun!
*My Kindle, full of ghost stories as usual
*Nightlight (I mean, you did see what I said above about the ghost stories, right? I know it’s my own fault, but I always have to travel with a small nightlight!)

Sarah Glenn Marsh writes young adult novels and children’s picture books. An avid fantasy reader from the day her dad handed her a copy of The Hobbit and promised it would change her life, she’s been making up words and worlds ever since.

When she’s not writing, Sarah enjoys watercolor painting, ghost hunting, and pursuits of the nerd variety, from video games to tabletop adventures. She’s never met an animal or a doughnut she didn’t like.

Sarah lives in Richmond, Virginia with her husband and their tiny zoo of four rescued greyhounds, three birds, and many fish. She is the author of Fear the Drowning Deep, the Reign of the Fallen duology, and several picture books.
