Dominika Egorova is many things.
A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs.
A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit.
A master of seductive and manipulative combat.

When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.

It’s one thing for Hollywood to pay lip service to women’s issues.  It is quite another to actually act or deliver on that lip service.  Red Sparrow is not a movie that screams “time’s up” or has reverence for the recent “me too” social movement. Like the Cold War era that its based in, Red Sparrow harkens back to a day when men have all of the control and women are pieces of sexualized meat.  The whole experience of this film was off-putting and borderline offensive.

Red Sparrow had very big shoes to fill.  Cold War spy thrillers have been done. Several have been done very well. Most of the spy thrillers have male leads (think James Bond).  It was obvious that the makers of Red Sparrow sought to distinguish it from other films in the genre. Instead of a male lead, they cast a woman (Jennifer Lawrence as Dominika Egorova) and promptly enrolled her in “whore school.” It only got worse from there.

The school was managed by Charlotte Rampling (as the Headmistress of the Sparrow School), as if it makes it better that a woman is issuing sadistic and sensationalized edicts to the students.  Rampling is an Oscar nominated actress. The role of Headmistress was a waste of her talent. Watching her issue tasks where the students had to be completely nude and perform public sex acts was uncomfortable, to say the least.

In order to have a proper Cold War era drama, Red Sparrow had to include an American. Joel Edgerton (as Nathaniel Nash) gets thrown-in as a weak incarnation of an American spy.  Nash, literally, gets made for a spy at every turn. What’s worse is that Nash is also a completely awkward love interest for Dominika.

The sex and seduction aspects aside, Red Sparrow was a boring spy caper. There were no hints for the audience follow, no intrigue for solving the plot’s mystery. The whole story gets wrapped in so many sub-plots that the audience forgets what it was trying to solve in the first place. The pacing was either too fast or too slow. Then, came the big reveal, handed to the audience without the necessary build-up.  The ending was extremely disappointing.

None of it worked.  What was billed as a female empowerment film is really a voyeuristic sexual drama, where the heroine’s lead skills were seduction, manipulation and sex. But she can pick locks, too. The uninteresting twists and turns played out as opportunities for Lawrence to remove her clothes on-screen.

If you’re a fan of semi-nude Jennifer Lawrence, Red Sparrow is for you.  If you like Cold War dramas or spy thrillers, in general, this movie isn’t, so much, for you. Either way, there is no need to see this one on the big screen. The visuals (other than Lawrence’s undressed body) are not spectacular. It isn’t pensive or thought-provoking, it's low hanging fruit.  If you’re inclined to see this dark and over-sexualized tale, Red Sparrow is playing everywhere now.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is the highly anticipated sequel to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. At the end of Catching Fire we left Katniss after she had just done the most rebellious act to date-shot an arrow at the quarter quells arena, blowing it to pieces. We also leave knowing that Peeta is now in the hands of the capital-what will befall him? Mockingjay starts with Katniss in District 13, with one goal on her mind. Getting Peeta back to safety.

I had my doubts when it came to Mockingjay, to me it is the weakest book in the series and I wasn't completely sure that they needed to split it into two films. I thought they could cut down most of the first part-what I call the boring half-and give us more action from the second half of the book. Oh my gosh am I thankful that they are splitting it into two movies. They somehow made the first half of the book really entertaining. I was on the edge of my seat from the start of the film. Halfway through I was glad that they had made it two films because they were able to show us parts of the story that we miss in the book. As a fan of the book and the story that is The Hunger Games I was very pleased with everything that they put into the movie.

Francis Lawrence--be still my heart. He is one of my all time favorite directors and his work with The Hunger Games series has only made me love him even more. He has such precise camera angles-he makes you feel everything the characters feel. If they are uncomfortable he gets the camera right up in the actors space so the audience feels uncomfortable. There are multiple times when he uses this technique-and not to just make you feel uncomfortable; to also make you feel sadness, anger, despair and excitement. One of my favorite things about this film is the editing, don't judge. I want to be an editor one day and so I take notice in the way a scene gets put together. The tiny details not many people notice. The sound editing within this movie was phenomenal. There were multiple times when I wanted to applaud the work of the audio editors because the sound was always on point. From my own personal experience sound editing is one of the most difficult tasks to take on, and for me that was not an issue within this film.

A lot of talk has been going around about Jennifer Lawrence and how she is a horrible singer. This is mainly coming from her. And once you see this movie you will realize that she is a liar. Her singing was beautiful and it was perfect for the feeling of the scene. When she sang "The Hanging Tree" I got chills and almost cried. This to me was one of the most powerful parts of the whole film, it brought every aspect of the film together and, to me, made me realize the enormity of what was really happening. Of course I am a crybaby while watching films, and this one was no different. I cried three or four times just because of how perfect it was, how similar to the book it was, and just the performances from the actors alone. I could bore you with all the perfect performances within this film, from Jennifer to Julianne Moore, but I would rather you experience their performances for yourself.

Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, one of the most anticipated films of 2013, and after seeing the film you will know exactly why. From start to finish the film takes you on a wild ride that we know and love as Catching Fire. Francis Lawrence’s dedication to this film makes you believe that the story is just flying off the paper.

As a fan of the series I was extremely pleased with everything that went into this film, from the actors chosen for the tributes to the lavish outfits worn by the capital and the tributes during the opening ceremony and tribute parade. I cannot explain in enough words how epic this film was. I wasn’t overanalyzing the scenes thinking “well they should have done that” or “they should’ve added that from the book.” I was hooked from the very first scene to the very end of the movie, silently wishing that Mockingjay would just start after Catching Fire ended, I couldn’t get enough of our heroine Katniss. I went through a world wind of emotions, from depression, to joy, anticipation. I went from crying one moment to laughing the next, and followed by cheering. I was amazed with how well the movie was put together and not straying from the storyline.

Meeting and getting to know the tributes was probably my favorite, I fell in love with Peeta and Finnick all over again. We get to feel more from Peeta, and watch Katniss’ and his relationship unfold throughout the victory tour and 75th Quarter Quell. Though one-act stood out the most to me and that was Jena Malone. She wasn’t what I exactly who imagined for Johanna, but to my surprise she was immaculate. Her performance was raw and angsty, just like Johanna was supposed to be.

Catching Fire will not disappoint a soul, and fans alike will fall in love with the series all over again. And not only will fans of the books will be pleased, but fans that never read the books as well. That’s what I loved about the adaptation; there wasn’t a time where I would think if someone who didn’t read that book might not understand what was going on or what just happened. They explained and didn’t relish on something that was not of importance. The movie will be loved by anyone who comes along it. Make sure to see it this weekend 11/22/2013!

P.s. – Bring tissues (lots of it).
