The Hateful Eight (ironically enough) is the 8th film by Quentin Tarantino. Going into The Hateful Eight everything was kept pretty obscure, the most we knew going in was that because of a blizzard, eight strangers paths cross when seeking refuge. Keeping it this vague is exactly what you want when dealing with a movie like this.
One of the best ways I can describe this film is if Tarantino took his very own Reservoir Dogs, threw it in a Western, along with the movie/game "Clue," you would get The Hateful Eight. The Hateful Eight is not only one of the most fun experiences I've had watching a movie all year but also one of the best cinematic experiences I've had all year. It has everything you want from a Tarantino film, from the rich dialogue to the unique, one-of-a-kind characters.
Tarantino brings an a-list cast and this a-list cast are all on their A-game, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Demian Bichir, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern. Everyone absolutely knocks it out of the park with their rolls, great performances left and right, Tarantino tends to bring out the best out of everyone, every time. All the characters/ actors here are all captivating but it's the character of Samuel L. Jackson's "Major Marquis Warren" that steals the show, right behind Walton Goggins's character who's also a thrill to watch, but it's Sam Jackson that steals all the scenes he's in. There's this one particular scene he has with Bruce Dern's character, that he just blows you away. Again, all the actors here are just extraordinary.
This is a three hour film in which most of the movie we have all our characters stuck inside a cabin. And while yes, since this is a Quentin Tarantino movie we are due for a full on Tarantino-like massacre scene, it's the brilliant dialogue that carries the film and keeps you so invested throughout it. Whether we had the characters meeting for the first time, or sharing a story, it's the dialogue, that in depth dialogue that Tarantino's known for, that not only makes the characters and their meetings with one another standout, but has you glued to the screen the entire time. Something I also enjoyed throughout the story, was that it didn't only completely focus on the mystery between the eight strangers but also started touching on a few relatable topics such as morals and racial issues.
The great cinematography by Robert Richardson and score by Ennio Morricone went absolutely perfect with the film. Tarantino shooting the film in 70mm, added more to the cinematography, allowing wider and grander shots of the snowy landscapes, also allowing much more detail to be captured when our characters were stuck inside the cabin.
A little something special Mr. Tarantino did with his release of The Hateful Eight, was both shooting it in 70mm and giving it a roadshow theatrical release. Tarantino at the end of the day is a big a movie buff like the rest of us, and wanted to give us a special treat. Roadshow theatrical releases were a big thing back in the day (particularly in the 60's), and they would give you souvenir programs for the movie you're going to see, having an overture before the movie starts, as well as having an intermission throughout the film. Having a unique cinematic experience like this doesn't come around that often these days, it's definitely something I'd recommend doing if your local theater is showing The Hateful Eight in it's 70mm presentation.
At the end of the day I'm really glad Tarantino didn't completely cancel the making of this film after the script leak like he had originally intended, because The Hateful Eight is one of my favorite movies of the year. Tremendous performances to go along with such intriguing characters, top notch cinematography, awesome score, everything you'd would want in a Tarantino/ mystery-who done it film, and an overall great cinematic experience. I absolutely loved The Hateful Eight.

Their main mission is to rule the Galaxy and destroy all who oppose them. Their commander is a ruthless, mysterious, powerful Sith, Kylo Ren. Kylo has an ambition to find and kill the last Jedi who is able to restore order and revive the Jedi ways, Luke Skywalker. Luke's unknown location is also a main concern for General Leia Organa, a General from the Resistance that now trying to find him too. This unexpected team is forced not only to fight and resist the First Order, but also to find Luke Skywalker.
I am a movie geek. This year I have seen 143 new theatrical releases, in a movie theater, and the year isn’t over. Other than horror flicks, I will watch everything and anything that I can squeeze into my schedule. I am also a huge Star Wars fan. I had the toys as a kid. I have the toys now, only I pretend that the toys belong to my children. I owned all the movies on VHS. Then, I modernized and owned all of the movies on DVD. Today, I own all six of the films on Blu-Ray. I even own just about every Lego Star Wars Space Ship that has been made, with the prize in my collection being the Millennium Falcon. Given how much I like Star Wars, I was disappointed with the new installment in the saga.
That said, I didn’t hate Episode VII, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I rather enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed it when it was called Star Wars Episode IV. Episode VII is a rehash of Episode IV! There. I said it. I loved Episode IV, it’s what started it all. After 30 years and something like a two year production schedule, I expected more than Episode IV regurgitated for a new generation. I read somewhere that George Lucas saw the new installment and liked it. Yeah, it’s his story from 1977. Why wouldn’t he like it? Given the two schools of Star Wars, the original trilogy (Episodes IV-VI) and the prequels (Episodes I-III), I wanted, most people wanted, a new installment that was akin to the original trilogy. Episode VII isn’t akin to the original trilogy, its exactly like the original film.
I started to write a review chock full of spoilers, so that I could point out all of the similarities, but that isn’t fair. You deserve to see it on your own. So, I deleted to this point and I am, instead going to tell you about the movie aside from the unoriginality. I was not crazy about the villain. Darth Vader was a badass, thru and thru. This new villain is more of a petulant child. Every time things didn’t go the villain’s way, the villain threw a fit. (Did you see what I did there? If you haven’t seen it, I’m not going to spoil it for you. You’re safe. Keep reading.) It was a source of comedy. The villain is throwing another fit. Really. I find it hard to believe that this villain can lead the Dark Side if he can’t control his own emotions.
About emotions, you will notice that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has quite a bit of humor in it. I wasn’t crazy about the humor. It seemed forced and too obvious. The original trilogy had moments of humor, but they were subtle, because, I think, saving the galaxy isn’t really a funny story, and still, Han Solo snuck-in some classic one-liners. The humor in this installment felt like “insert laugh here.”
There were plot holes galore. Some were real head scratchers, events that challenge everything you know about the galaxy far, far away. Jedi mind trick is used by someone that has no (recent) training in the Force. How? Luke Skywalker was trained by Yoda. People can’t just Jedi mind trick, can they? And how is it that just anyone can pick-up a lightsaber? And if people and things can go missing, how is it that they were all conveniently found just in time for the movie? Could they have been found all along?
Still, it was a fun movie to see. The special effects are very cool. I recommend large format. Personally, I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens in IMAX 3D. The special effects, as well as the costumes, were my favorite aspects of the film. There is something cool about paying homage to the classic films. I would have appreciated homage. This wasn’t that. See Star Wars: The Force Awakens playing everywhere now.

JOY Release: December 25, 2015 Director: David O. Russell Screenplay by: David O. Russell; Story by: Annie Mumolo and David O. Russell Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini, Elisabeth Röhm, Dascha Polanco and Bradley Cooper JOY Official Channels:SITE | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram OFFICIAL HASHTAG: #JoyMovie
JOY is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen , Elisabeth Röhm and Dascha Polanco. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love.
December is a great time to go to the movies. Studios release all of their best movies at the end of the year in preparation for awards season. There is a lot of stuff that is worth the time and cost of a babysitter. This week’s film, Joy, is one such gem.
Joy is the David O. Russell bio-pic about Joy Mangano, self-made America entrepreneur, Home Shopping Network maven and inventor of the Miracle Mop. The film spans Mangano’s entire life, everything from her childhood friends to her failed marriage to her creation of the Miracle Mop and beyond. Mangano is an American success story. The holidays are a great time to watch success stories, American or otherwise. It’s just inspirational. If a single mom down on her luck can invent the Miracle Mop and change her entire family’s fortune, there is nothing the audience can’t do.
I have never seen Jennifer Lawrence (Joy Mangano) better. Joy Mangano’s life was full of ups and downs, and Lawrence plays every emotion seamlessly. I have never been a big fan of Lawrence, but I really think she’s coming into her own with this role. The rest of the cast was likable. I wasn’t sure about all of the characters, though. Some of the supporting cast seemed a little cartoonish, exaggerations of actual people. The end result is that I feel like I know who Joy Mangano is, but I’m not sure if I know who her family members were.
I appreciated the plot timing. The movies goes from the highest points to the lowest points in Mangano’s life, skipping most of the fluff. The movie played like a series of vignettes. And the vignettes served to keep me interested in each individual part of the Mangano’s story. The only vignette that I didn’t like as much was Lawrence’s scene with Bradley Cooper at the QVC Channel Network. Cooper plays a QVC exec, and I get that Lawrence and Cooper enjoy working together, but this was not my favorite Cooper/Lawrence pairing. Their scene at QVC served to slow the story.
After the QVC scenes, the story recovers nicely. The movie has heart. The story is real. The humor is outlandish and real at the same time. It’s just a good time. Underdog stories are my favorite. Joy isn't perfect, but neither was Mangano's life. After all the gifts are unwrapped and the leftovers are put away, you cannot go wrong taking-in the story of Joy. See Joy for yourself when it opens on Christmas Day.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
Star Wars fans rejoice! The day we've been waiting for is finally here! Star Wars: The Force Awakens is upon us - and I for one could not be any more happy!
Going into this film everyone has their own fears. Are these going to be like the prequels that let some of us down? Are we going to enjoy this story just as much as the original three that started off this amazing galaxy? Is Kylo Ren going to live up to Darth Vader?!
Let me answer for you....No....Yes...and ABSOLUTELY YES!
I went into this completely blind. That's right. Had not seen a SINGLE thing about this movie. Sure I had seen merch but apart from that I kept myself in the dark. Didn't watch any trailers, or TV spots, NOTHING. You might think that's difficult...it actually wasn't all that difficult to do. 2 years of waiting for this glorious film and I was able to keep myself in the dark.
I was thrilled though - I cried when the Star Wars title started rolling...the feeling in my theater was one of pure joy. We all cheered when certain things happened that paid homage to the original trilogy, we all laughed at the witty one-liners that Finn has - or of course when one of the droids is being sassy, we all gasped at every twist and turn that was brought upon us.
Everyone was worried about J.J. Abrams directing this film. Now I'm just worried that he's not directing the next 2. He did such an amazing job with this film - there were so many camera techniques that I was completely in love with. Some of the pans he use as transitions from one scene to the next were so beautifully done I would silently cheer just for the camera movement. He brought to life a story so many of us have been waiting for so long to see, and he did it with such care that I'm scared to see what the next director brings to the story. Abrams is clearly a Star Wars fan - I feel like this is the case with how careful he was about making sure nothing got leaked before he wanted fans to see it, how he's taken characters that we all know and love and introduced us to new characters that we feel like we know and love after seeing The Force Awakens. I could go on, and on about Abrams and my love for what he did with this story. But I think I should touch base on Kylo Ren.
This will be brief. I also am not sure if any of you were like me in the fear that will this new Sith Lord be as awesome as Darth Vader. YES. I immediately took to twitter saying "I still love you Darth Vader buuuttt Kylo Ren is my new Sith husband" because basically he's the best. Adam Driver - seriously...I've seen him in comedies so I was skeptical. But oh man...he did such an amazing job as this conflicted villain whose only goal is to become more evil. Seriously CANNOT wait to see where his character goes.
Rey. Rey is the heroine of this story. And let's touch base on this fact. We have a female lead character in the Star Wars franchise! I'm immensely jealous that I am not her, but I have to say I was a little more than thrilled to find out that she was basically going to be our new Luke Skywalker, per-say.
Again. Star Wars fans rejoice. For today we are blessed with technology that makes us feel as if we are living in the galaxy far, far away - and we have an amazing story that every Star Wars fan will be proud of.

From the producers of THE KING’S SPEECH comes the story of a fearless Scottish General, Macbeth (Michael Fassbender), whose ambitious wife (Marion Cotillard) urges him to use wicked means to gain power of the throne. A thrilling interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, MACBETH is a dramatic reimagining of the realities of war-torn times and a tale of all-consuming passion and ambition. Academy Award® winners Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films (SHAME, TRACKS, MR HOLMES) produce with Laura Hastings-Smith (HUNGER). See-Saw developed the project alongside Film4. STUDIOCANAL majority financed with Film4.
Everyone knows the story of Macbeth. Treachery, witchcraft, madness. I had to read the play twice during my educational years. Never really grabbed me like some of other’s Shakespeare’s works. But, I could not pass up Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the lead roles. At the end of the film, I was glad that I had made the time to see Macbeth.
I think Macbeth is a great movie for those who have to study it in school. It has all the bells and whistles that younger movie fans will appreciate. The scenery is intense and dramatic. The costumes were cool to see. The musical score was super eerie. The battle scenes were brutal and well-choreographed.
As far as the acting performances go, Cotillard was especially compelling in her role as Lady Macbeth. I sat in the theater thinking that she could probably convince anyone into murder and treason. She was mesmerizing on-screen. She made the film a better experience. I appreciated Fassbender’s acting and artistry as Macbeth, but I didn’t like him in the role. He seemed to be trying too hard. I felt that his dialogue was coming too slow, like he was enunciating too perfectly, and that lessened the effects of the madness.
All in all, it is a good film. It’s an exercise in the art of good film making. If you have never seen a Shakespeare film adaptation, this is a good place to start. If you have any student studying Macbeth, I would certainly recommend it. It is probably the best film adaptation of the play that I have seen. I am not crazy about the source material, but I love movies enough to know when others will appreciate something that I was not able to appreciate as much. Lost story short, you might like it. I appreciated it as an work of art. See Macbeth for yourself when it opens in theaters on 12/11.

Capture the Flag
Director: Enrique Gato
Writers: Patxi Amezcua (Argumento), Jordi Gasull
Cast: Dani Rovira, Michelle Jenner, Carme Calvell
Rated PG FOR ACTION, LANGUAGE AND SOME THEMATIC ELEMENTS.
CAPTURE THE FLAG is inspired by the 1960s space race and sees a ruthless billionaire bent on exploiting the source of Helium 3, the clean energy of the future. His plan involves rewriting history to excise the feats of the Apollo XI astronauts and the Moon landing. Enter headstrong 12-year-old surfer, Mike Goldwing, who along with his friends, a small lizard with delusions of Godzilla-like grandeur, and his grandfather, travels to the Moon to thwart evil. Jordi Gasull, a co-writer on The Last Explorer, is creator and co-scripter. Costumes are by Debra McGuire. The movie was produced by Donna Gigliotti and James Spies. Executive producers are Joseph Craig and Jean Morrissey.
Witty and Heartwarming. These are the two words I used to describe this enchanting movie.
It was early Saturday morning when I woke my six-year-old son up to get ready for the screening of this movie. I was really excited that I would be able to share a special moment like this with him and he seemed as excited as I was.
Arriving at Universal City Walk was exciting – I had never taken my son there despite having it 20 minutes from our back yard, and it did not disappoint. The store names were twice their normal size and I have always felt like I was walking onto a movie set when there.
As we made our way into the assigned theater, we noticed a table filled with crayons and coloring pages, so we each grabbed a sheet and a handful of crayons and went to our seats. Ten minutes later, our sheets were colored and the theater went dark and the movie began.
My first thought was, “Oh my gosh! This is so cool!” especially since it starts with a recap in black and white of what had happened with astronauts back in the 60’s. Then, we are taken to the present day where we meet Mike Goldwing, a 12 year old with some fierce friends who are always up for an adventure. We come to find out a little bit more about his family – his father is an astronaut and he has a mother and little sister. We also learn that his grandfather was an astronaut in the 60s and was supposed to be on the space shuttle that went to the moon, but for some reason he never went and disappeared from his family’s life.
Mike enlists his friends to help him reunite his dad and grandpa and cause quite the stir to be able to make this happen. Already I liked this movie, especially since it had a strong emphasis on the importance of family and that families need to be there for each other, no matter what. Then, they find out that a wealthy billionaire is planning on making a trip to the moon and the President stresses the importance of the astronauts landing on the moon again.
A race to the moon is what ensues next, and Mike along with his friend Amy, sneak onto the space shuttle only to be caught by Mike’s grandpa. To make matters worse, the evil billionaire paid off a man from the paparazzi to lock the shuttle and send it off to space ten hours before it was set to launch! Little do they know that Mike, Amy and grandpa Goldwing are on that shuttle!
Now, I don’t want to give the entire movie away, but I will end this by saying I highly recommend this movie. Not only is it extremely family friendly, it also has plenty of laughs that grown ups can enjoy as well. Don’t be surprised if you end up leaving the movie theater with a lump in your throat as well as thinking about that distant relative or parent, sibling, cousins, etc. that you might have lost touch with. With the holidays upon us, this is the perfect movie to enjoy as a family!
