Book Review: Everlife by Gena Showalter

Everlife
Everlife #3
Author: Gena Showalter
Reading Level:Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy / Dystopia
Released: 27th February 2017

STAND TOGETHER OR FALL ALONE.

THE FATE OF THE EVERLIFE HANGS IN THE BALANCE.

At seventeen years old, Tenley “Ten” Lockwood had to make the ultimate choice—where to live after she died. Loyalty to her selected realm has not wavered…until now. She is out of time. Sacrifices must be made, and a terrible price must be paid. But is she too late?

As the Everlife descends into darkness, a single truth becomes clear: Troika and Myriad must unite—or perish. In order to bring sworn enemies together, Ten must enter forbidden territory…and destroy the powerful Prince of Ravens. But there’s only one way inside—bonding with Killian Flynn, a deadly rival who sets her blood aflame.

When nothing goes as planned and betrayal leads to the edge of utter defeat, Ten and Killian will have to rebuild trust from the ashes of their hearts. Victory seems impossible, the odds stacked against them. In the end, how far will they be willing to go for the sake of their realms and the Everlife?

Everlife brings the conclusion--the end of this unique, fantastic trilogy.

The Everlife trilogy has truly been a breath of fresh air. Tenley Lockwood is such a unique character. Being a young adult with the weight of the world on her shoulders, she handled it as any other teenager would. With maturity (with flickers of immaturity) and indecisiveness. After all, who wants to make such a life changing decision without some deep thought? Especially when that decision could destroy a whole realm.

The evolution of Ten and Killian was...definitely a journey. After a rocky journey down a forbidden path, they do the one thing that seems right--bonding to each other. Not only because of the love they share but because if Tenley wants any chance at getting into Many Ends again, Ten needs to bond to Killian. For better or for worse. Things don't turn out quite as they planned and she finds herself with an extra enemy. Victory is not in sight and it feels like fighting a losing battle. But they cannot give up...the other path is not an option.

Very rarely am I happy with trilogy endings. I'm not a huge fan of cliffhangers, open endings or huge tragedies that bring the story to an end. I don't think I've been as happy or content after finishing a series before. Seriously. You cannot read Everlife if you have not read the first two installments but I will keep this review short and sweet to avoid any spoilers.

I'm sad that the series is over. I will miss each and every character and the world Showalter created but I can eagerly say I (im)patiently await the next Gena Showalter book (and I reccomend you all check out her other series' too!)

Book Review: Lucky Number Eleven by Adriana Locke

Lucky Number Eleven
Exposé #5
Author: Adriana Locke
Reading Level: Adult Fiction
Genres: Contemporary Romance
Released: September 6, 2017
Review Source: Author (Newsletter)

I’ve always been the person that does whatever someone tells me I can’t.

Can’t graduate with a four-point-oh? Check.
Can’t win a modeling contract without trying? Did it. Check.
Can’t make it in the pro football league? Triple check with an MVP Award on top.

When my best friend told me to stay away from his little sister, Layla, it didn’t sound like a challenge. Then again, I’d never seen her before.

He obviously wasn’t thinking about who he was talking to if he believed I could ignore her. I obviously wasn’t thinking of him at all when I fell in love with her either.

Fact of the matter is: I not only fell harder than a quarterback sack on a Sunday night game, but I did us one better. Kind of like that MVP award, only not so shiny. Sort of like my Player of the Year title, except the only thing I’m walking away with is an ex-best friend and a woman that hates my guts.

It’s okay. Just tell me I can’t win her back.

I’m Branch “Lucky” Best and today’s my lucky day.

*This is a STANDALONE ROMANCE.

This was my first time reading Adriana Locke (yes I was a Locke virgin, but no more) and Lucky Number Eleven just made me want to buy up more of her books and the other Exposé stories after experiencing the sweet, flirty and just gush-worthy story and characters here. Layla and Branch are just so cute together, and Poppy, Paula's best friend, and Finn, Branch's best friend and Layla's brother, fit perfect as their foils in this enchanting sports read.

I'll be honest I am a huge Helena Hunting fan, and I never thought someone could write couples as cute as Helena, with quirkiness and awkwardness that's endearing and so very real but Adriana Locke has created a book and characters that are as witty and fun as Hunting's Pucked series. I hadn't wanted Layla and Branch's story to end. Branch is a cocky sports star who has led a man whoring life, until Layla James Miller--his best friend's sister. She's done with footballers and any other sports star out there, but Branch and Paula's chemistry is too magnetic. Soon Layla is in too deep and Branch has been blindsided and tackled.

I read this book in one sitting, never wanting to put it down. You become completely absorbed in the storyline and rooting for Layla and Branch. This book is for every romantic out there, and doubly if you want a book that will keep you laughing and smiling to the end.

Reading Level: New Adult
Genres: Contemporary Romance
Released: December 5th 2017
Review Source: Gallery Books

Green Card meets Once in ROOMIES by New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren (Gallery Books; on sale December 5th); a tale of marriage convenience that is just so…inconvenient.

Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant subway musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a bigtime musical director.

When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until he admits his student visa has expired and he’s in the country illegally.

Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

From subway to Broadway to happily ever after, modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively readable.

Fans of Christina Lauren will not be disappointed. Everything you have come to love about their books, you'll once again find inside the pages of ROOMIES. It's full of fluffy love with its touch of sauciness. Real fun and fast to read, you'll finish it in few sittings.

SO ROOMIES is set in the Big Apple, win for that. Then you have a cute Irish musician, another win. Then add in the sweet as can be Holland, and whole fake marriage, book is full of wins. The characters have great chemistry. And this is super important in all stories. Even with a "fake marriage" they had that natural chemistry. Each character has such great qualities about them. Holland, especially, she is the friend you make sure you never loose. She will always be there to guide, push and help you how ever she can. That's Holland, and that's what she does for Calvin.

Now Calvin, was probably super hot for most readers, me I'm not a fan a redheads so much, but the music did make him more appealing to me. Plus he is an all around good guy. The fact that he played in subways to make a living, really spoke to me. Makes you understand better the sacrifices people have to make sometimes to make it on a daily basis.

Guys, just go out and grab yourself a copy today and dive into this sweet, sexy, fast-paced romance. When has Christina Lauren let you down? NEVER!

Christmas Without Cate

“She’s not going to make it,” Jim Morgan said gruffly.
Noelle wandered over to the floor-to-ceiling windows where her husband stood, brooding. His cobalt-blue eyes were fixed on the dusty courtyard of their Costa Rican compound. She followed his gaze, and her normally ice-cold heart warmed slightly. Not many things elicited an emotional response from her, but seeing Ash out there with his one-year-old son got to her. Even she had to admit that the little boy was fucking adorable. He teetered around on two wobbly legs, while his dad chased after him to make sure he didn’t face-plant into the dirt.
“She might,” Noelle answered.
Jim glanced over with a dry look. “Don’t bullshit me, sweetheart. We both know it ain’t happening.”
She swallowed a sigh. No, she didn’t think so, either. Their daughter had been on assignment in Africa when all hell broke loose—a rebel group decided to make their move, martial law had been called, and all aircrafts grounded. Now Cate was stuck on another continent, more than a day’s worth of travel away. They hadn’t heard from her in almost twenty-four hours, which told Noelle that all the cell towers were down thanks to the chaos over there.
“She’s gonna be pissed,” Noelle murmured.
“No shit. Missing her kid’s first Christmas?” Jim shuddered. “Jesus fuck, I’m not looking forward to her mood when she finally gets in.”
Yeah, neither was Noelle. Cate was a hothead on a good day, but when her only child was involved? She went all mama lioness on the world. She was undoubtedly crushed that she couldn’t be here with him right now, and furious enough to set all of Africa on fire.
“Those rebels ought to be shaking in their boots,” Noelle said with a grin. “Cate can’t be happy with them right now.”
Jim’s answering grin was wry. “I don’t think anyone over there is happy with them right now. But, yeah, you’re absolutely right. She’s probably plotting all their grisly murders while she sits in the airport.”
A shriek of laughter sounded from the bowels of the huge hacienda-style house, making Noelle’s shoulders tighten. One of the million children spending the week here, obviously. And children were goddamn loud.
It was a total madhouse and she fucking hated it. Only Abby, Kane and their seven-year-old son J.J. lived on the compound year-round, and Noelle didn’t mind the little family. Plus, J.J. had inherited his mother’s badassness and was learning martial arts, so Noelle got to spar with him in the compound’s basement gym. Everyone else? She liked a helluva lot more when they weren’t in her face twenty-four-seven.
She’d barely had a moment’s peace since everyone arrived.
D and Sofia had shown up last night carting their four kids. Four.
Isabelle and Trevor got in the night before, bringing along their two daughters.
Liam and Sully showed up this morning—kidless, thank God. Ditto for Ethan and Juliet. Those two couples were the only ones not on Noelle’s shit list at the moment.
Luke and Olivia had brought their colicky son. Assholes.
And don’t get her started on Bailey. Her favorite chameleon, a woman capable of transforming into a completely different person at the drop of a hat, was pregnant again. Bailey and Sean already had two kids. Why did they need a third?
Noelle just prayed that the baby fever amongst Morgan’s mercenaries and her chameleon assassins wasn’t contagious.
“There are too many kids in this house,” she told her husband, moving closer to rest her frazzled forehead on his shoulder.
Chuckling, he put his arm around her and pressed his lips to the top of her head. “It’s fucking brutal,” he agreed. “Makes me want shoot something.”
Her heart skipped a beat, because Jim’s bloodlust always got her all warm and gooey. He was a crazy bastard, but she was a crazy bitch, so really, a match made in heaven. And despite being married for so many years, the often-violent passion between them had yet to fade. She didn’t think it ever would.
“Can we?” she begged, tilting her head to peer up at his handsome face. “I haven’t fired a gun all week. Or used a knife. You want to go downstairs and have a knife fight?”
A wicked gleam entered his eyes. “Yes.”
Noelle laughed and brushed a kiss over his sexy mouth. “I was joking.”
Jim’s tongue slid through her parted lips to toy with hers, sending a shiver up her spine. When he kissed her this lazily, it usually meant he was contemplating something very naughty.
“Why don’t we forget the knives and just fuck instead?” His breath tickled her lips.
She groaned softly. “We have guests.”
“They’re all playing with their new toys—nobody’ll notice if we disappear for a couple hours.” His hot mouth traveled to the side of her neck, sucking gently on her feverish flesh.
Noelle gave another groan. “Screw it,” she murmured, reaching between their bodies to cup his hardening cock. “Let’s go.”
His eyes were on fire as he lifted her into his arms and marched toward the arched doorway. He was a man on a mission, and the mission was her. Noelle loved it.
But they’d barely reached the foot of the staircase in the massive foyer when a familiar noise had Jim halting in his tracks.
Noelle froze at the same time, then hopped out of his arms and landed deftly on her feet. Jim was already yanking his cell phone from his pocket and hitting a button.
“Don,” he barked to their security guy. “Who the fuck is that?”
Noelle heard the tinny reply—“No idea—and then rushed out the front door.
In the courtyard, Ash had scooped Boone into his protective arms. But he didn’t look overly concerned when his gaze met Noelle’s.
“Military chopper,” he called over the din.
She glanced up in time to see the underside of the military bird as it flew over the roof in the direction of the helipad on the far end of the property. “Nobody requested clearance,” she called back.
Ash just grinned, and, carrying his son, hurried toward one of the Jeeps parked in the courtyard. Noelle raced after him and tossed herself in the passenger side. Ash promptly handed Boone over, and the little boy instantly threw his arms around her neck.
“Gamma!” he shrieked happily.
She winced. Oh sweet baby Jesus. It still jarred her to hear the kid call her Grandma. She was too young to be a fucking grandmother. But her husband was the boy’s grandfather, which made her his…ugh…grandma.
“Don’t get your hopes up,” she warned as Ash sped down the path running along the side of the house.
As they flew along the dirt road, another Jeep joined them in the rearview mirror. Jim, and he was alone, which meant he either shared the same suspicion as Ash or he’d received actual confirmation of it. If he sensed a threat, he would’ve brought backup.
The bird was landing when the two vehicles skidded to a stop. Ash dove out of the driver’s seat. Noelle carefully propped Boone on her hip and got out of the Jeep. The wind from the rotors sent her blonde hair flying in all directions. She tried to keep it in check with her free hand.
“Bird!” Boone shouted.
Noelle grinned. Kid was already picking up the correct lingo. “That’s right,” she confirmed.
“Gappa!”
Jim appeared and ruffled his grandson’s dark hair. “S’up, kiddo.”
As Ash ran toward the Chinook helicopter, Jim brought his mouth close to Noelle’s ear. “That’s not an American bird. RAF.”
She nodded, having noticed the same thing. “She must’ve called in some pretty huge favors,” she remarked. “I’m talking three or four different governments’ worth of favors.”
Jim’s enormous grin practically danced off his face. “That’s our girl.”
At the helipad, the Chinook’s door creaked open.
And then there she was, her dirty-blonde hair arranged in a messy side braid. Her clothes were wrinkled and dirty. Her features were haggard. But her blue eyes, the same shade as her father’s, were wholly alert.
“Mama!” Boone yelled in delight.
Cate barely had a second to blink before she was in Ash’s arms. Noelle watched in amusement, all the while trying to restrain the ecstatic child wiggling in her grip.
“Mama!”
“All right, all right,” Noelle relented. “Let’s go see your mama.”
She shifted Boone to her other hip, grasped Jim’s hand, and then the three of them went to welcome Cate home for the holidays.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow
Nevermoor Series #1
By Jessica Townsend
In Stores October 31, 2017
Recommended for ages 9-12
A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world--but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks--and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday.

But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It's then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organization: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart--an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests--or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and Neil Gaiman, this fast-paced plot and imaginative world has a fresh new take on magic that will appeal to a new generation of readers.

Blog Tour: Fragments of the Lost by Megan Miranda

Fragments of the Lost
Author: Megan Miranda
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: November 14th 2017
Review Source: Crown Books for Young Readers

From the New York Times bestselling author of All the Missing Girls and The Perfect Stranger comes a suspenseful psychological mystery about one girl's search to uncover the truth behind her ex-boyfriend's death. Perfect for fans of We Were Liars and 13 Reasons Why .

Jessa Whitworth knew she didn't belong in her ex-boyfriend Caleb's room. But she couldn't deny that she was everywhere--in his photos, his neatly folded T-shirts, even the butterfly necklace in his jeans pocket . . . the one she gave him for safe keeping on that day.

His mother asked her to pack up his things--even though she blames Jessa for his accident. How could she say no? And maybe, just maybe, it will help her work through the guilt she feels about their final moments together.

But as Jessa begins to box up the pieces of Caleb's life, they trigger memories that make Jessa realize their past relationship may not be exactly as she remembered. And she starts to question whether she really knew Caleb at all.

Each fragment of his life reveals a new clue that propels Jessa to search for the truth about Caleb's accident. What really happened on the storm-swept bridge?

Fragments of the Lost was an interesting read but not something I was expecting. I love mystery and thrillers so when I read the synopsis of this book, I thought why not. Although the story was good, I honestly think it was too slow for my liking. Nevertheless, I liked how the story wrap up.

As the story begin, we learn that Caleb was in an accident and Jessa, his ex-girlfriend, wants to learn the truth of this accident. She think she is missing something and she cannot live at peace without getting this resolved. As you continue reading, each chapter will focus on Caleb's room. That is where Jessa spend her time. The more she dig in his room, the more questions she begins to come up with. She's as clueless as day one. Her guilt is killing her. I wasn't sure why she felt guilty, as again, they had broken up. But that's when the story starts to pick up.

Although, Fragments of the Lost wasn't really a mystery or thriller story for me, I like having Jessa as the main character. She wasn't the type to give up easily. When her mind was set, she was focus until she got her answers. I really liked the aspect of whenever Jessa would find an object in Caleb's room, it would struck a memory. I liked how it told the story before and after. Also, it tells you why she cared for him. However, no matter how many story Jessa is reminded of, it feels like she is in a zombie mode. Like there is no expression or emotion from her after he died. It's like she also died along him.

Overall, I liked Fragments of the Lost but it was slow built for my liking. The story started to pick up right at the very end, which didn't give me much room to love the story as I hope I would. Needless to say, I still enjoyed Jessa and her determination. It was an interesting story with some twists and turns. Just not what I was expecting it to be.

Maurice Sendak said of Runny Babbit, “I wish I had done this book!”

Runny Babbit has sold over 770,000 copies and spent 39 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. This companion book, Runny Babbit Returns, features extraordinarily imaginative poems that embody Silverstein’s iconic humor and style, with tongue-twisting wordplay and uproarious characters. New and old readers alike won’t want to miss their chance to revisit their favorite Runny and meet even more of his woodland friends.

“We’re delighted to continue the legacy of the extraordinary Shel Silverstein, a household name for over fifty years,” said Suzanne Murphy, President and Publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books. “This never-before-published collection of poems and drawings will be cherished by readers of all ages and is a wonderful companion book to follow Runny Babbit.”

Generations have grown up with the works of Shel Silverstein, known not only as a poet and illustrator but also for his work as a cartoonist, playwright, performer, recording artist, and Grammy Award–winning songwriter. Blog Tour: Renegades by Marissa Meyer + Guest Post

Renegades
Renegades #1
Author: Marissa Meyer
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: November 7th 2017
Review Source: Feiwel & Friends

From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer, comes a high-stakes world of adventure, passion, danger, and betrayal.
Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

Sweet mother of Prodigies! Marissa Meyer is a genius and Renegades is as awesome as her other stories. After waiting for an eternity to read Renegades, I was gifted an advance copy in exchange of a review and I was so gratefully excited. I was so stocked to start and it certainly did not disappoint. So if you're a fan of comics, superheroes, and/or villains, this one is a must.

The story begins with a very traumatizing event. Poor Nova, one of the main characters, is a witness to this event and is forever engraved with the horrific act that occurred. Now, that she is grown, Nova wants vengeance. How exciting? As the story continues, we learn that in Gatlon city is divided by two camps, the Superheroes known as Renegades and Villians known as the Anarchists. What makes this story special is the dual POV's between Nova, a secret Anarchist known as Nightmare and Adrian, a group leader of the Renegades. It's fun to read their world collide and how intense these characters can get. Seriously, they are so much fun to get to know.

Renegades provides you more of the world-building and how everything operates in Gatlon City, so it is slowly paced. So it does have its highs and lows. You'll be introduced to characters within each sector and will learn more about their abilities. But once you past the introductions, you'll be hooked. Also the ending is so shocking and the plot twist... Yes, THAT plot twist will definitely have you start a new countdown to the release of book 2.  So if you're doubting whether to read this book or not, just give in and read Renegades. Be sure to get your hands on it on November 7th. You won't be disappointed.

My Top Ten Heroes in Literature / Comics

Top ten is always hard when it comes to books and comics. Like how are we supposed to choose from the hundreds of options? Can you come up with just ten? No, right? So to answer this question, I asked myself, who would I want fighting on my side during war? Again, hard but here I go:

Arya Stark - Game of Thrones: Fights for what she believes for

William Herondale - The Infernal Devices: With his fierce love, he will do anything to keep you protected.

Iron Man - Marvel: Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist

Hermione Granger - Harry Potter Series: One of the best role models with her strong, smart and independent personality.

Daenerys Targaryen - Game of Thrones: mother of dragons

Helena - Orphan Black: A psycho with a heart, if she considers you as family.

Katniss Everdeen - The Hunger Games: A heroine that changed her generation for the better.

Celaena Sardothien - Throne of Glass: One of the most strongest characters in Young Adult literature and loves to read!

Bellamy Blake - The 100: total badass

Wolverine - X-Men: a character comfortable with shades of grey, hey, if he's on your side, then you're set for life

MARISSA MEYER is the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Lunar Chronicles series, as well as the graphic novel Wires and Nerve: Vol. 1, and The Lunar Chronicles Coloring Book.

Her first stand alone novel, Heartless, was also a #1 New York Times bestseller. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband and their two daughters.
