Book Review: Cross My Heart by Megan Collins

If
you’re into family drama with a dark, twisty edge, Cross My Heart by Megan Collins is a must-read. It’s one of those books that keeps you thinking long after you’ve turned the last page, thanks to its intricate plot and emotionally charged themes. Collins masterfully blends suspense with the raw complexities of sisterhood, loyalty, and the lingering effects of trauma.

The story centers on two sisters, a childhood promise, and a web of secrets that threatens to unravel everything they thought they knew about themselves and each other. The central theme is about how promises and loyalty, especially those made in youth, can shape the trajectory of a person’s life. I found the exploration of sisterhood particularly compelling. The bond between the sisters is intense and multifaceted—it’s not always warm and fuzzy, but it feels incredibly authentic. Collins does a great job of capturing the complicated love and resentment that can coexist in familial relationships.

One of the highlights of this novel is its character development. The sisters feel so real and deeply flawed, which only makes them more relatable. I was especially drawn to their struggles with trust, both in themselves and in each other. Collins doesn’t shy away from diving into their insecurities, fears, and the ways their shared past has shaped their identities. These layers of complexity made me root for them even when I didn’t agree with their choices.

The pacing of the story is another strength. It moves along at a steady clip, with just the right balance of slow-burning tension and unexpected twists. There’s a palpable sense of unease that builds as the story unfolds, and Collins has a way of making you second-guess every character’s motives. I appreciated how the twists weren’t overdone—they felt organic and believable, which kept me fully engaged.

One aspect of Cross My Heart that stood out to me is its exploration of the long-term effects of trauma. Without giving too much away, the book delves into how the sisters’ shared experiences in childhood continue to haunt them as adults. It’s a poignant reminder of how the past can shape our present and the importance of facing those buried emotions to truly heal. I found myself reflecting on these themes even after I finished reading.

Another element that adds depth to the story is Collins’ writing style. Her prose is both lyrical and precise, which enhances the emotional weight of the narrative. She paints vivid scenes that make you feel as if you’re right there with the characters, experiencing their joys and sorrows firsthand.

The ending, while satisfying, leaves you with plenty to think about. It’s not tied up in a neat little bow, but that’s what makes it so impactful. Collins invites readers to reflect on the lengths we’d go to for the people we love and the boundaries we might cross in the name of loyalty.

Overall, Cross My Heart is a gripping read with a perfect mix of suspense and emotion. If you enjoy domestic thrillers with well-drawn characters and thought-provoking themes, this book won’t disappoint. Megan Collins has crafted a story that’s both entertaining and deeply moving—a testament to her skill as a storyteller.

ARC Book Review: The Wrath by Gena Showalter

The Wrath
Rise of the Warlords #4
Author: Gena Showalter
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Released: 02/06/2024
Review Source: Author provided

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with a new book in the tantalizing Rise of the Warlords series, featuring a brutal Hell king and the irresistible beauty who upends his world.

For centuries, Rathbone the Only, King of Agonies, has existed for one recovering the enchanted bones of his slain wife to bring her back to life. He’s never been closer to success. But a new enemy has risen. A band of deadly war gods who have thirty days to destroy her or suffer the consequences. With time running out, Rathbone hires a maddening harpy-oracle, unaware she has an agenda of her own.

Neeka the Unwanted is a fierce warrior on a stop Rathbone and the gods. She’s seen the future if either is victorious, and it’s horrifying. She’ll do whatever proves necessary to forge a new path, even seduce the ruthless royal from his purpose. What she can’t predict? How the intense male will shatter her hard-won defenses along the way.

As Rathbone battles unexpected betrayals, cunning foes and the wild temptress he craves with every fiber of his being, he knows he must hold on to a cold dream or embrace a new flame.

Having been here since the very beginning starting with The Darkest Night, The Wrath was like catching up with dear friends - nostalgic in the best way, but also full of surprises and the witty humour you come to expect with Gena Showalter. Gena, in my opinion, writes some of the best characters and banter I’ve ever read, and I was SO excited for Neeka and Rathbone’s HEA.

Neeka and Rathbone come together to form an unlikely alliance when Rathbone hires her to help him bring his wife back, but Neeka has her own agenda…

The harpies have always been a favourite of mine in this world - they are unmatched with their fierceness and wittiness. The top layer of Neeka is full of madness, all bark and all bite, and the biggest wall around herself. She shrugs off the Neeka The Unwanted title but my heart hurt for her on occasions. And when she got possessive? Absolutely YES. Always. There’s something next level when the female character is “touch him and die”.

The romance was 10/10 - they kept us waiting for the kiss with a slow burning romance. There were moments where Rathbone was boneheaded and thoughtless (unintentionally, but what can you expect from an adopted child of Hades) but it was made up with some well-written groveling.

Anyways - I loved this book. Everything from the main character’s romance, to Neeka and Taliyah’s solid friendship and everything else. I loved that it wasn’t just a romance between two characters - there were insights to so many other elements and I think that’s why these books never get stale or boring. The Wrath was well-rounded, well-written, hilarious with kickass characters.

ARC Book Review: Pestilence by Laura Thalassa

Pestilence
The Four Horsemen #1
Author: Laura Thalassa
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance | Dystopian
Released: 08/15/2023
Review Source: Review copy | Sourcebooks Bloom Books

They came to earth--Pestilence, War, Famine, Death--four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.

When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.

Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.

Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.

And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

Full disclosure: I’d already read this book back in August 2021 before requesting this ARC. I remember really enjoying Pestilence but never reading the rest of the series so I took this as an opportunity to re-read the first book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the re-read just as much as the first read. Pestilence is a unique take on the Four Horseman of the apocalypse. This paranormal romance is an enemies-to-lovers, torn between love and purpose romance which is thoroughly enjoyable. I loved the progression from enemies, to friends (kinda), to lovers.

“No One Knows where the Four Hoursemen came from, only that one day they appeared on their steeds, riding through cities and wildlands alike.”

Pestilence the Conqueror has one job - destroy the habitants of the world. Make sure they all die - one city at a time. His plans are slightly hindered when Sara tries to murder the horseman, but ends up his captive instead.

I read Pestilence in one sitting - the writing was smooth and the progression of their relationship kept me hooked throughout. It was one of those books where you miss the characters after you finish. However, I will say this - I was so disappointed with the ending. Many things are left unanswered and I wanted more of an explanation to some loose ends. Overall, the ending felt unfinished and I felt frustrated, and it dampened my desire to read book two a little.

ARC Book Review: From the Grave by Kresley Cole

From the Grave
Arcana Chronicles #6
Author: Kresley Cole
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance

When even the gods hold their breath . . .

To defeat the Emperor and Fortune, Evie, the great Empress of Arcana, must repair her bond with Death, despite the earth-shattering developments between them.

And danger lurks in every shadow . . .

Their allies—a sea witch, a band of roving warriors, and more than a couple of rogues—overcome terrifying obstacles to help them. But when Jack makes a shocking discovery, the fallout threatens to tear their alliance apart.

One girl could deliver salvation—or doom.

If the Empress and her friends can remain united, will their powers be enough to defeat a catastrophic curse on the world, or will hellfire reign forever? The end looms for us all until the best hand wins. . . .

I want to preface this review by saying the Arcana Chronicles has been in my life for 10 years. Throughout that time I've grown up, gotten married, had two kids and a pup. My son is named after Jackson specifically from this series. This series was one of the main instigators in my life to begin writing my own books. So to say I'm ready for From the Grave is an understatement, and I'm incredibly grateful to have received an ARC of this book.

From the Grave gave us some of the most heart-warming moments of the series. We witnessed a group of teenagers grow up and live their lives through an apocalyptic war within the Arcana, and alliances they made with each other flourished. The best friendships were made and it was a pleasure reading this journey of discovery, romance, action and loss. From the Grave melted my heart, broke it, then pieced it back together again. This long awaited conclusion settled my soul.

This instalment continued where The Dark Calling left off. The Emperor and Fortune are destructive and dangerous - with no regard to anyone else as they have tunnel vision on winning the game and taking out Evie and Aric, as well as the other remaining cards. Not much can be said without spoilers, but trust in Kresley Cole - she smashed this. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so happy yet heartbroken over a book before, or cried so much after I’ve finished reading it.

From the Grave concluded everything so wonderfully. It was an ending I wasn't expecting but definitely needed. We've been submerged in the world of Evie, Jack, Alice and friends for so long that I've got a lot of emotion now the series is over. I'm crying as I'm writing this because Kresley has done it again - she has my whole heart with the Arcana Chronicles. I'll never forget this series - ever.

ARC Book Review: Never Been Kissed by Timothy Janovsky

Never Been Kissed
Author: Timothy Janovsky
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: M/M Romance
Released: 05/03/2022
Review Source: ARC | Netgalley

Dear (never-been-quite-over-you) Crush, It's been a few years since we were together, but I can't stop thinking about the time we almost...

Wren Roland has never been kissed, but he wants that movie-perfect ending more than anything. Feeling nostalgic on the eve of his birthday, he sends emails to all the boys he (ahem) loved before he came out. Morning brings the inevitable Oh God What Did I Do?, but he brushes that panic aside. Why stress about it? None of his could-have-beens are actually going to read the emails, much less respond. Right?

Enter Derick Haverford, Wren's #1 pre-coming-out-crush and his drive-in theater's new social media intern. Everyone claims he's coasting on cinematic good looks and his father's connections, but Wren has always known there's much more to Derick than meets the eye. Too bad he doesn't feel the same way about the infamous almost-kiss that once rocked Wren's world.

Whatever. Wren's no longer a closeted teenager; he can survive this. But as their hazy summer becomes consumed with a special project that may just save the struggling drive-in for good, Wren and Derick are drawn ever-closer...and maybe, finally, Wren's dream of a perfect-kiss-before-the-credits is within reach.

A feel-good summer LGBTQIA+ New Adult RomCom, perfect for fans of Red White & Royal Blue, Boyfriend Material, and What If It's Us.

I instantly got “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” vibes from this, except a gay version and there are no letters to past loves, but emails to four guys Wren almost kissed. Never Been Kissed is a light-hearted, fun read where we meet Wren, a twenty-two year old who’s been waiting for a special moment to give away his first kiss. Enters Derick - former best friend who he crushed on hard, but also the friend who ghosted Wren when they went off to college.

Admittedly, I was a Derick fan from the start. Why? I’m not quite sure. He ghosted his best friend and didn't reciprocate any mutual feelings to Wren but I saw great things and I was not wrong. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. In addition to the cutesy romance, Wren struggles with an identity crisis throughout the novel and being labelled gay. Wren isn’t sure if this suits him and his sexuality best - but he’s relatively fresh out the closet and he just isn’t sure. I love how this was executed and represented.

A little side note: I received an eARC of Never Been Kissed however I struggled to get into the book so I listened to the audiobook instead. Mark Sanderlin did a wonderful job with narration - I've never listened to his work before and I enjoyed the uniqueness of his voice.

ARC Book Review: Ruthless by Gena Showalter

Ruthless
Immortal Enemies #2
Author: Gena Showalter
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: GENRE
Released: DATE
Review Source: ARC provided by author

Forbidden. Powerful. Ruthless.

Micah the Unwilling, fae King of the Forgotten, can tame even the most violent of beasts. Forged on the battlefield, this iron-willed warrior considers his soldiers his family, and he will stop at nothing to reclaim their dispossessed land. Gearing for war with a sadistic enemy, he is disciplined and focused—until a feral beauty he encountered long ago wanders into his camp.

Viori de Aoibheall wields a terrifying ability to sing monsters to life. Having spent her childhood in a forest, raising herself and her frightening creations—the only friends she’s ever known—she’s ill prepared for the scarred royal and his fearsome brutality. Not to mention the ferocity of their connection and the carnality of his touch. But the real problem? Her brother is Micah’s greatest foe. And though the sensual king makes her burn, she must stop him, whatever the cost.

We met Viori in Heartless - Kaysar's long lost sister, and I was thrilled when I realised she was the heroin of Ruthless. And the enemies to lovers ordeal? Yes please! Arguablly one of the best tropes for a paranormal romance. I won't lie, I was slightly worried as the miscommunication trope slide in but it was written really well and I actually enjoyed the ride of miscommunication! This whole book was *chefs kiss*.

As a teenager Micah stumbled upon Viori while she was submerged in one of her deep sleeps and years later they cross paths again. Even in the first book I just knew Viori would be fiercely independent and she was exactly that - after raising and keeping herself alive, she is fierce and dangerous with a mountain of walls built around her - her actions portrayed a lot of her characters past trauma I think - and one of my favourite things was experiencing Viori coming out of her shell and accepting and exploring Micah and his adoration.

Ruthless was a brilliant addition to the Immortal Enemies series - it was energising, fun and packed with unhinged characters who are hard to resist. Gena Showalter has yet to write something I haven't love and this was no exception. At "The End" I felt happy, content and gooey over the latest happily ever after. If you like fast paced paranormal romance with the best banter and unique world building, you will love this series.

ARC Book Review: Stealing Infinity by Alyson Noel

Stealing Infinity
Stolen Beauty #1
Author: Alyson Noel
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: 06/28/2022
Review Source: Netgalley

These days, I’ve been killing it when it comes to letting people down. Now I’ve been kicked out of high school, arrested, and accepted into a remote, off-the-grid school owned and operated by an inscrutable billionaire tech guru.

Gray Wolf Academy is looking for a certain kind of student. Ones that no one will miss. Like me.

Then there’s Braxton. The beautiful, oddly anachronistic guy who showed up right when the trouble started. And he’s a total enigma—which means that I definitely can’t trust him, even if there’s something about him that makes me want to. They all tell me I have a gift. A very rare gift. And Gray Wolf Academy wants me to learn it. To use it. Because if what they say is true, I have all the time in the world. And that makes me the most dangerous high school student you’ll never know…

Stealing Infinity tells a story of time travellers with a pinch of romance, a lot of secrets and even more mystery. Gray Wolf Academy isn't how it seems - even if I don't know why yet. The whole book revealed so many questions and not many answers so as you can imagine I am dying for more!

The further into the book you get, the more intriguing the prologue becomes.

"When the boy does find my daughter - and he will - I can only hope it will lead to her uncovering this object."

Has she already met this mysterious blue eyed boy? What does he want with her? Why? How does this tie in with her current situation? Ms Noel, I need answers!

The novel began with an introduction to numerology (something I'd never heard of) and I loved that it was included as it was fun to workout and read up on my number - I'm an eight! You can see the amount of research and detail the author included and it was a fantastic touch!

Alyson Noel is an author who has been in my heart for years - way back when The Immortals series came out and Stealing Infinity did not disappoint. The gripping storyline had me from the beginning and I was desperate for more when it ended. The author took a trope I generally don't like (time travelling) and spun a tale that become one my favourite reads of the year.

ARC Book Review: Sleepover by Serena Bell

Sleepover
Under One Roof #3
Author: Serena Bell
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Released: 29th March 2022
Review Source: Netgalley

That one night stand? It was just the beginning…

My new neighbor, Elle, is everything I avoid. Chatty, sunshine-y, and determined that since our kids are brand-new BFFs, we should be too.

That would be bad news even if I hadn’t had a one-night stand with her a few months back that turned me inside out.

You see, since my wife died, I keep to myself. I hook up, but it’s always one-and-done. So you can imagine my shock when I discover that the girl next door is the one woman I was hoping never to see again.

Now I’m seeing her again… and again, and again. And all the promises I made to myself? They’re starting to look more like lies.

Sleepover delivers a single dad next door, one night stand rediscovered and sunshine/grumpy all wrapped into one funny, steamy and heart-warming package. It can be read as a standalone and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

Elle and Sawyer are two sides of the same coin - both are single parents. Elle went through a painful divorce and received a invitation to her ex-husband's wedding only weeks after the divorce, and Sawyer lost his wife and became a single father through no choice of his own. Last time Elle and Sawyer seen each other they were in a compromising situation, had their fun then parted ways and that was that...until Sawyer moved next door and their children became fast friends.

There were moments when my heart hurt for Elle. Her ex-husband left her for his high school sweetheart that he never stopped loving, then she falls for Sawyer, her steaming hot next door neighbour who is too in-love with his dead wife to let anyone else in. All she want is to be someone's first choice, but soon discovers she's only ever been a second choice. It takes him a while, but Sawyer finally begins to understand his love is not an either/or situation, and his heart is big enough to expand and grow love for others.

Sleepover was a really great read. It wasn't just about Elle and Sawyer getting to know each other and becoming reacquainted, but also the pair figuring out their new lives with their kids, Madden and Jonah, and the moments they have all together. It was a wholesome and entertaining with just the right amount of spice.

ARC Book Review: Devil's Redemption by Natasha Knight

Devil's Redemption
Devil's Pawn Duet #2
Author: Natasha Knight
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Mafia Romance
Released: March 15th 2022
Review Source: Provided by author | ARC

Isabelle

Just when I was beginning to trust my husband, he betrayed me.

Just when I thought I was falling in love he showed me the beast he truly is.

I understand his thirst for revenge. But I don’t want to play this game of pawn and puppet master.

No matter how his hands make my heart race and my body crave his devil’s touch, I won’t give in.

I love his daughter.

But I can’t let myself fall in love with her father.

Jericho

I have exactly what I want. Revenge.

Soon everything the Bishops have will be mine.

But it will cost me more than I bargained.

Isabelle Bishop hates me. As she should.

I know what I am. And now she does too.

But falling in love with my wife was never part of my plan.

Devil's Redemption picks up straight after the cliffhanger in book one. Just as Isabella was starting to soften towards her captor and husband - despite his questionable methods of dealing with her - that all falls to ruin when she finds out how much be betrayed her, forcing her into a decision she wouldn't have made otherwise.

Jericho is the most infuriating man ever, in a typical Mafia man way, but he was also charming and his character grows on me a lot throughout this book. His revenge plans fade away once he realises he loves his wife, however there's a lot of damage already done between their relationship. His inner demons demand revenge, but Jericho loves Isabelle and wants to start his life with her.

Devil's Redemption is full of secrets, misunderstandings and brick walls separating the husband and wife from truly finding their happily ever after with their baby on the way. Although there were moments when I wanted to bang their heads together, I enjoyed their journey from enemies to lovers to forever.

This duology is set in the same world as The Society Trilogy however you do not have to read The Society to enjoy Isabelle and Jericho's journey. If you enjoy mafia romances and the pregnancy trope, then this duet is for you.
