Empire Of Dust
Author: Eleanor Herman
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: June 28 2016
Review Source: Harlequin Teen

In Macedon, war rises like smoke, forbidden romance blooms and ancient magic tempered with rage threatens to turn an empire to dust

After winning his first battle, Prince Alexander fights to become the ruler his kingdom demands—but the line between leader and tyrant blurs with each new threat.

Meanwhile, Hephaestion, cast aside by Alexander for killing the wrong man, must conceal the devastating secret of a divine prophecy from Katerina even as the two of them are thrust together on a dangerous mission to Egypt.

The warrior, Jacob, determined to forget his first love, vows to eradicate the ancient Blood Magics and believes that royal prisoner Cynane holds the key to Macedon's undoing.

And in chains, the Persian princess Zofia still longs to find the Spirit Eaters, but first must grapple with the secrets of her handsome—and deadly—captor.

New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman entwines the real scandals of history with epic fantasy to reimagine the world's most brilliant ruler, Alexander the Great, in the second book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.

Legacy of Kings. Empire of Dust. Alexander wants to prove that he is fit to be king. Heph wants to prove that he is still Alex's right hand man. Kat wants to kill the queen. Zofia isn't sure what to believe or if she can even trust her feelings anymore.

It's been a year long wait for this sequel - and in the book it picks up a little bit after where the last one ended. Jumping back into this world was so easy, and such an enjoyable ride for myself. I couldn't stop flipping the pages, I couldn't stop getting deeper and deeper into this world.

All the relationships that you will start rooting for. I am still a firm believer that Heph and Kat were meant to be together. Empire of Dust almost forces them to get together - in a good way - but they're to proud to admit their feelings for one another....well....one of them is.
Zo's relationship though. This concrete relationship that Legacy Of Kings set up for her, and made us root for, gets uprooted and leaves you wondering what just happened. Yet you're still secretly cheering for it. Even with the given evidence that she really just needs to move on.

The action and adventure that Empire Of Dust takes you on, it made me want to join Alexander's men on the battlefield. And Alex, you can't help but feel bad for him. You feel that he needs someone to be there for him. And then - surprisingly - a character comes to his aid....just not in the way anyone would have expected. In all seriousness I'm okay with this though. I don't want to give anything away, but I really liked this little twist.

The twists that liter this book will have you gripping the book in your hand, gasping, dropping your book and staring into nothingness as you comprehend what just happened. The first half of the book everything goes basically how you assume it's going to go. And then there's some bits and pieces towards the end that leave you speechless and sitting there going, but wait. The character's stories were so intricately woven into one another while being so spread apart. And that I loved. You'd find out a bit about Kat's path while you were reading Cyn's path, and vice versa. And that's when the twists come, that's when you get the curve ball before the character themselves even knows what's hit them.

And for that, I loved the book. And I cannot wait for the next one.

Before the Game of Thrones craze swept the nation, Eleanor Herman was hard at work entertaining readers with her extensive research on courtly intrigue and romance. She is the New York Times bestselling author of Sex with Kings, as well as three other works of nonfiction: Sex with the Queen, Mistress of the Vatican, and King Peggy. Obsessed by all things royal and historical, she lives in McLean, Virginia with her husband and four extremely dignified cats. Legacy of Kings is her first novel.

Adaptation News: Warner Bros. Television Options Legacy of Kings!

BIG BANG THEORY’s Simon Helberg With Warner Bros. Television Options New York Times Bestselling Author Eleanor Herman’s Buzzed-About YA Fantasy, LEGACY OF KINGS

NEW YORK, August 21, 2015—Warner Bros. Television has acquired the option rights to Legacy of Kings (Harlequin TEEN; August 18, 2015; $19.99; Hardcover), first of the forthcoming Blood of Gods and Royals YA epic fantasy series from New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman. Simon Helberg(The Big Bang Theoryand Jocelyn Towne will produce via their Wildline Entertainment banner for Warner Bros. Television alongside Lauren Oliver and Lexa Hillyer of Paper Lantern Lit, who packaged the book.
“It’s thrilling to meet these characters just as they are discovering their true identities. We’re envisioning developing this as a historically rooted Game of Thrones, but for a younger crowd,” said Towne.
Legacy of Kings is possibly my favorite of all the books Paper Lantern Lit has helped produce,” added Oliver. “We are thrilled to work with Simon Helberg and his team to bring the story to the small screen.” Last spring, Legacy of Kings sold just before the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in a four-book, major preempt, followed by numerous foreign sales. Praised as “genuinely sexy” (Kirkus Reviews), and a book that “action and fantasy fans will gobble up” (School Library Journal), it arrives with advance praise from authors such as Cinda Williams Chima (The Heir Chronicles), Alex Flinn (A Kiss in Time, Beastly) and Arwen Elys Dayton (Seeker). Legacy of Kings has drawn comparisons to Game of Thrones for its use of multiple points of view and reimagining of historical events.

Legacy of Kings shares the untold story of a teenage Alexander the Great, before he was a conqueror, as he sets out on a quest to earn his father’s respect. Accompanied by a band of others driven by their own motivations, Alexander journeys to regain the Blood Magic—the only force capable of driving out an unspeakable evil that has taken root in the kingdom. “The first time I read the Legacy of Kings manuscript I knew our team had found an extraordinary work,” said Natashya Wilson, executive editor at Harlequin TEEN. “The seamless weaving of rich historical detail, true events, fiction and magic, combined with unique characters driven into repeated conflict creates a riveting tale that deserves to be shared with a wider audience. I could not be more pleased that WB agrees.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with WB to bring Legacy of Kings to life,” said Eleanor Herman. “The world of the young Alexander the Great is enthralling, rich and magical—I can’t wait for viewers to experience it on their TV screens!”

A story intertwined between characters; following Alexander who wants to prove he is fit to be king, Kat who wants to avenge her mother's death, Jacob who wants to prove he is man enough for Kat, Cyn who wants the magical powers her mother craved, and Heph who is just trying to remain as loyal as he can be to Alexander.

I have a love/hate relationship with this book. And what I love about this book, is honestly what I hate about this book as well. I love the characters and the stories that they each go on. But what drives me insane is how long it takes to get back to certain characters. Such as Zo - her character is a fun one, and yet I feel like there are only 4 or 5 chapters about what is happening to her. I need more Zo!

Heph...I LOVE HEPH! At first I felt weird because I was like yea....I love Heph so much that I want him and Kat to get together. But the more and more I read the more and more I realized that they would be PERFECT together! And I can't wait to see that relationship evolve.

Cyn....while she is not one of my favorite characters I do have to say that I loved her chapters. She is deceitful and yet you learn to care for her. She's cunning and smart, when you're in someone else's chapter you hate her and she gets on your nerves. When you're reading her chapter you love her and feel weird about it....the love/hate relationship that I was talking about.

I honestly can't wait for the sequel, I plan on reading it even if I didn't enjoy this book as much as I could have. I was taken away from the story when it would jump around from chapter to chapter and make me stay away from certain story lines for so long. But since Alex, Kat & Heph's story are some of the more prominent stories, I can't wait to see what happens with them.
