BAD SANTA 2 returns Academy Award®-winner BILLY BOB THORNTON to the screen as America's favorite anti-hero, Willie Soke. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (TONY COX), to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is 'the kid' - chubby and cheery Thurman Merman (BRETT KELLY), a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie's sliver of humanity.

Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Academy Award®, Golden Globe and Emmy-winner KATHY BATES, as Willie's horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke. A super butch super bitch, Sunny raises the bar for the gang's ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior. Willie is further burdened by lusting after the curvaceous and prim Diane, played by Emmy Award-nominee CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, the charity director with a heart of gold and libido of steel.

You better watch out: BAD SANTA 2 is coming to town.

MARK WATERS directs BAD SANTA 2 from a screenplay by Johnny Rosenthal and Shauna Cross, based on characters by Glenn Ficarra & John Requa. GEYER KOSINSKI and ANDREW GUNN produce. Executive producers are Zanne Devine, David Thwaites, Gabriel Hammond, Daniel Hammond, Mark Waters, Jessica Tuchinsky, Adam Fields, and Doug Ellin. The film is a BROAD GREEN PICTURES and MIRAMAX® release. In theaters November 23, 2016.

I was able to review Bad Santa 2, only Bad Santa 2 is more of a Bad Santa, Too.  It's more of a paraphrasing of the original story than a second chapter of the modern classic.  It's another one of the films that falls under the category of "who asked for a sequel and why?" What made Bad Santa a modern classic was that it played like lightning in a bottle. A Santa Claus that is nasty and mean? That was hilarious!  Bad Santa 2 is the same lighting in the same bottle, thirteen years later. And, since you've already seen the lightning in the bottle, it isn't special anymore.

The original cast is back. Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton), Marcus Skidmore (Tony Cox) and Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly) all reprise their roles with a new crime caper. This time around, there is an additional member of the Soke clan along for the fun. Kathy Bates plays Willie's mom, Sunny Soke. For me, Sunny Soke was the biggest problem with this movie. She was gross. I'm all for pushing the envelope, but Sunny was wretched and unfunny for shock value alone. She added nothing to any part of the film.

The plot was basically like it was for the original Bad Santa film.  It's another heist of another charity. There is nothing wrong with that, except it's been done before. All the same raunchy, graphic humor is still there. Some of it lands its mark and some of it misses.

Like in the first movie, the best scenes take place between Willie and Thurman. The duo epitomizes dysfunctional families.  Willie and Thurman still have a great chemistry. And Thurman humanizes Willie, so that the audience can't completely hate him.

Despite my criticism of Kathy Bates' character, Bad Santa 2 isn't a bad movie.  It just isn't a good movie, either.  It has all been done before. This installment needed to up the ante in order to resonate with the same crowd who saw the original. We laughed at the stupid humor thirteen years ago, but, hopefully we've grown-up some since then. It takes smarter humor to make some of us laugh now. In that regard, Bad Santa 2 failed. Maybe a crowd that doesn't know the original film will think this a better movie. If you want to catch Bad Santa 2 over the holidays, it is playing in theaters now.

Movie Review: Broad Green Pictures' The Dressmaker

The Dressmaker
Directed by: Jocelyn Moorhouse
Written by: Rosalie Ham (Novel by), P.J. Hogan and Jocelyn Moorhouse (Screenplay by)
Produced by: Sue Maslin
Starring: Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth, Hugo Weaving, Sarah Snook, Judy Davis, Caroline Goodall
Official Sites: Facebook: Facebook | Twitter
A glamorous, worldly dressmaker returns to her small Australian hometown to seek the truth behind her notorious reputation. This dark and quirky comedy stars Academy Award winner Kate Winslet as Tilly Dunnage, who cares for her eccentric mother (Academy Award nominee Judy Davis), schemes with the local sergeant (Hugo Weaving) who has secrets of his own, and falls for local farmer Teddy (Liam Hemsworth). As she starts to unravel her scandalous past, she transforms the town’s women with her exquisite creations. Armed with only her sewing machine and haute couture style, Tilly shows she is a force to be reckoned with and that revenge never goes out of style.

You know you’re off to a good start when the opening line of the movie is “I’m back, you bastards”. The Dressmaker was a wonderful story that delivers the viewer through the full gamut of emotions. The cinematography was both bold and dramatic, and the isolated of setting of the small town was picture perfect. The dead but beautiful trees around town lent much to the drama of the story which had numerous comedic moments.

Kate Winslet’s character Tilly is a woman who comes home to the tiny town of Dungatar to try to remember her past, while exacting a quiet revenge on the town that exiled her. She transforms the women of the town with fashion and manipulates them in a way they are never aware of. Tilly’s development in this movie is also strongly influenced by the relationship she is rebuilding with her mentally ill mother ‘Mad Molly’ played by Judy Davis. Hugo Weaving had a fabulous role as the cross dressing cop who lends a bit of comic relief while always very endearing. There were a few haunting moments in the movie that have stayed with me, but mostly positive memorable moments, such as Liam Hemsworth (just, in general), and the creative and whimsical fashion throughout the movie. It is hard to say too much without spoilers. If you appreciate an interesting story, talented actors, and visually pleasing cinematography then chances are good that you will enjoy this movie.

Our evening was hosted by a collection of groups including Magpies & PeacocksHouston Vintage, Southwest Alternate Media Project, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The evening started with a cocktail party and ended with meeting the reigning Miss Houston Vintage, as well as two former Miss Houston Vintages (and a swag bag!). They were all gracious hostesses, not to mention fabulously dressed!

When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.

I have to say that when I was asked to review this movie, I had no idea what it was about. I then checked the trailer and thought, “Hm, that looks interesting.” Boy, was that an understatement! This movie is not something I would typically see, but I am glad that I did. Let me explain to you why:

First thing I will mention about this movie is the cinematography. It was gorgeous: incredibly artistic and beautiful. I’ve never seen a director have shots like these in any other movie. I, at times, was so impressed and entertained by the beauty of the filming that I wasn’t really noticing what was actually happening in the scene. Sometimes the way he would flawlessly merge 2 scenes that had nothing to do with each other together was mesmerizing. The colors, the lighting, the way it was filmed. Yes, I am in love with this film!

Next up is the acting. Elle Fanning is not just looks (because she really is gorgeous), she has real acting talent, just like her sister. But let’s also talk about Jena Malone. This girl, every time I see her, I think “Johanna from The Hunger Games”, but after this movie I no longer do. She was awesome in this movie…just a little crazy, like Johanna. Then we have Abbey Lee (who plays Sarah) and Bella Heathcote (Gigi), who were awesome at playing the mean girls. They did a good job of you kind of feeling for them more than you did for Regina George, and understand why they sometimes feel like they do. I don’t want to say too much (I refuse to write a review with spoilers!), but know that these 3 girls are more than you think. Then there’s Keanu Reeves! I’ve missed him! He was awesome in this movie…it was just a little weird for me seeing him be such a creep and an a-hole since I know he’s a VERY sweet and nice guy in real life. He’s such a good actor that he makes you hate his character, as you should –and that’s all I will say about his character.

Now on to the plot. The plot, in my opinion, was a good one. I’ve always had a fascination with the entertainment business and when I was younger wondered how it’d be like to be a model. But, after researching some more about how they demand you to basically starve (and I refuse to damage my body for anything or anyone in that way) and that I wasn’t tall enough (when I was younger you still HAD to be tall and at 5’2”, I’m considered minute. Now they have models of different heights, I think), I gave up on that idea. Then I watched this movie and walked out thinking to myself, “Yep, and that’s why you never pursued that career.” This movie shows us the very horribly sad reality of the modeling business, how ruthless the competition is (literally), how degrading and insulting the “experts” treat the models, and how stressful it is. Yes, it’s glamorous and luxurious, but at what cost? The best part about the plot, however, is the twists and turns of the movie, the story, and the characters. At the end of the movie I was in shock and kept thinking “so messed up, so messed up!” If you like movies that surprise you and that have unexpected endings, then this movie is for you!

Last, but not least, the lessons to learn from this movie. I love it when movies have lessons to teach us because they are usually good ones. From this movie I observed 3 very important lessons: be careful with whom you trust, learn to appreciate those that got your back more, and being yourself and honest ALWAYS is the way to go.

When you meet someone new, some people are very nice and friendly and helpful, while others take a while to warm up. The key isn’t that when someone behaves one way always means this or that. No, the key is to be very observant, listen to your gut for it is always right (when you see the movie you will understand why I say this).

The second lesson from this movie is learn to appreciate those that got your back. See, Jesse met a guy (Dean) who agreed to take pics of her for her portfolio so she can apply to become a model. At the beginning, he gave the impression of being a little shady, but turned out he was actually incredibly sweet and really cared for her. He was there for her when she most needed it. But, as often happens in youth (and even some immature adults) when you get too cocky, you start thinking you’re better than that person or that you no longer need them because you’ve outgrown them. Turns out that the ones who had your back do NOT deserve your cold shoulder because the day will come that you will need them again and they won’t be there anymore thanks to your selfish attitude. So think about that!

Thirdly, being yourself and being honest are always the best option. Jesse, in her youth and innocence, is always herself and doesn’t like to lie. Other models boast about how many plastic surgeries they’ve had done, and who they’ve had to f---k to get where they are. Jesse does NONE of these things, but is always honest and respectful, yet she gets very far (farther than some of the ones who’ve been in the business longer) very quickly due to this. Yes, her beauty plays a huge factor, but when they ask her questions and she answers honestly and you can see her sincerity, that’s what they liked. So always, always, be yourself and always be honest.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my style of reviewing movies and that you go see it. If you do, please leave me a comment below letting me know what you thought.

Movie Review: Broadgreen Pictures' Break Point

Break Point

Director: Jay Karas
Written by: Gene Hong & Jeremy Sisto
Starring: Jeremy Sisto, David Walton, Joshua Rush, J.K. Simmons, Amy Smart, Vincent Ventresca and Adam Devine

Official Sites: Official Website | Official Facebook | Official Twitter
Jimmy Price is a reckless man-child on the last leg of his career as a doubles tennis player. When his latest partner drops him, he realizes he’s officially burned all of his bridges on the pro circuit. He decides to make one last ditch effort to revive his career, reaching outside of the tennis world and convincing his childhood partner -- his estranged brother Darren, now an apathetic substitute teacher – to team up with him. The mismatched pair, with the help of a unique 11-year-old named Barry, make an unlikely run at a grand slam tournament and are forced to re-discover their game, and their brotherhood.

Jimmy Price (Jeremy Sisto) is a washed up tennis player who loses his doubles partner. He gets the bright idea to go for the Open. He needs a partner, though. After asking many, he ends up asking his brother, Darren (David Walton), who he used to play doubles with in their youth. They were champs then. But now Jimmy is an out of shape, heavy drinker who needs to grow up.

This movie has a few parallel plots. Darren has a crush on his father’s vet assistant, Heather (Amy Smart). He also is a substitute who can’t shake his student, Barry (Joshua Rush) on summer vacation. Barry is also on a personal journey. The brothers have some unresolved issues too.

The movie was mostly light and entertaining. It flowed nicely with no slow spots. Liking tennis will help you with the story since there is a lot of tennis in the movie! Toward the end I found myself having to really pay attention to what was happening in the match! Also impressive is that the actors were really playing.

The cast in Break Point was great! Amy Smart has been one of my favorite actresses for a long time and it was great to see her on the big screen. David Walton plays the comedic straight man which he does very well. It is interesting that he is the sensible one in this movie since on his show, About a Boy, his character is pretty irresponsible. Speaking of that show, he also acts with a young boy. He and Joshua were great together. Jeremy and Joshua have a great scene together in a hot tub. There is lots of swearing but Joshua’s character wins the match! J.K. Simmons never lets you down. He plays Jimmy and Darren’s father. Where else have you seen him this year? Terminator Genesis! I save Jeremy Sisto for last. His character is a big ole mess and he looked the part whole heartedly. He’s very scruffy and unkempt with an uncombed curly afro most of the film. Somehow, Jeremy is still seriously cute! I was really hoping Jimmy combed his hair at some point but he never does. None the less, my eyes stayed fixed on Jeremy.

The movie does wrap up all plot points. They don’t all end the way you might think but some do. Break Point is fun, funny, and dramatic. It is also athletic. If you like tennis then you will enjoy this movie.
