Movie Review: 20th Century Fox's Why Him? - #WhyHim

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry—and Ned’s panic level—escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.

There are a ton of movie choices this holiday season.  Some are very good.  Others are not so bad.  And, then, there is Why Him? It stands on its own level, its own level of not watchable. I make it a point to work-in something positive about every film I review.  But, this one has zero redeeming qualities.  The whole thing is crude and outdated.

It’s 2016!  The premise of the film is that a ne’er-do-well in personality (but app mogul in finances) is trying to win the hand of the woman he loves over the objection of her father.  The app mogul is played by James Franco, the dad is Bryan Cranston and the daughter is Zoey Deutch.  If you see the theatrical poster, you will notice that Franco, Cranston and Deutch are all on it.  However, only Cranston and Franco are credited on the poster.  Deutch’s name doesn’t appear anywhere, not even in tiny letters.  Take that sentiment and extrapolate it to the movie.  Both of these men are combating over the future of a woman, and the woman is relegated to a second class role.  No one seems to care what she thinks.  My frustration was exacerbated because the plot makes the woman (Deutch) a college student at prestigious university, indicating that the character has a brain.  The only other woman in the movie is relegated to an even lower class of role.  I love Megan Mullally’s comedic abilities.  They were wasted on Why Him? with Mallully playing a stereo-typical mom role.

The supposed humor isn’t funny, it is just crass.  I am all for pushing the envelope, but submerging a moose in urine isn’t humorous. It isn’t novel.  It’s just gross. And that is only one example.  Same goes for inserting expletives into the dialogue for every third word.  It isn’t creative.  It’s lazy writing.  The movie is figuratively full of moose in urine.  The entire story is a series of ridiculously outrageous set-ups for jokes that fail to land.  I didn’t laugh a single time.

The last ten minutes of the movie are sort of charming.  There is a good cameo then.  I won’t ruin that part, in case some of you still want to see this.  But that is it.  Ten good minutes.  And those ten minutes are not funny, either.  They are, at best, cute.  I recommend you see anything else this holiday season.  If, despite my best efforts, you still want to see Why Him?, it opens on December 23.

Movie Review: Broad Green Pictures' The Infiltrator

The Infiltrator
Director: Brad FurmanWriters: Ellen Brown Furman, based on Robert Mazur’s biography
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Diane Kruger, John Leguizamo, Benjamin Bratt, Yul Vazquez, Amy Ryan
Rated: Rated R for strong violence, language throughout, some sexual content and drug material

Based on a true story, Federal agent ROBERT “BOB” MAZUR (Bryan Cranston) goes deep undercover to infiltrate Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking scene plaguing the nation in 1986 by posing as slick, money-laundering businessman Bob Musella. Teamed with impulsive and streetwise fellow agent EMIR ABREU (John Leguizamo) and rookie agent posing as his fiancé KATHY ERTZ (Diane Kruger), Mazur befriends Escobar’s top lieutenant ROBERTO ALCAINO (Benjamin Bratt). Navigating a vicious criminal network in which the slightest slip-up could cost him his life, Mazur risks it all building a case that leads to indictments of 85 drug lords and the corrupt bankers who cleaned their dirty money, along with the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, one of the largest money-laundering banks in the world.

This was a very interesting movie in more ways than one, but mostly it was interesting to me because of the psychological part.

The Infiltrator is based on the biography written by Robert Mazur, who is also the main character in the movie. He wrote the book after his experience in being a secret agent that helped bust the money-laundry business that the super famous drug lord Pablo Escobar had. Mazur used the name Bob Musella as his alias to infiltrate their business. He becomes a trusted confidant of one of the main men of Escobar, which is how he was able to do what he ended up doing to bust them all.

This was a movie I really liked because I find it so incredibly interesting everything he had to go through, especially psychologically. You see how he is a very experienced agent, but he probably hadn’t been as involved with that drug and money-laundering world. There are some scenes in which some really horrible things happen and you can see the shock and horror on his face from what he just witnessed. There are other scenes in which you can tell the psychological and emotional toll all of this is taking on him.

My favorite character though, was Kathy because she played the roll of Robert’s “fiancée” and she did such a great job at being a secret agent too. In a few occasions, she saved his behind and she was a big help on the planning of how to capture all the big dogs of the money-laundry business.

The acting in this movie was very good! Especially Bryan Cranston –whom I absolutely love as an actor because he is superb! I especially love him as a comedy actor, but that’s besides the point right now. But, all of them really did a great job and some of them look very much like the characters they play (at the end of the movie, during the credits, they show the actor and next to them the picture of the person they played.

This movie is not for everyone because of the gore in some of the movies, especially when you know these things happened for real in the 80s and that someone (Robert Mazur) and that he had to endure that double life and even risk his family (wife and 2 kids) for this mission. But, at the same time, it’s a way to learn more what these agents go through and how they risk their lives for the greater good. I, personally, really liked it and thought the filming and directing of it was very good. It keeps you intrigued and wanting to see more.

The only thing I did not really like was that there are some things they don’t explain, because it all seems like it happens in a spam of 1-2 weeks but, of course, that’s impossible. They don’t explain that much what it is they did to gain that much trust of the drug and money-laundry lords because it seems like they become friends one day and the next they’re being called family.

In summary, I really like this movie and would recommend it if you are into these kinds of movies. It doesn’t have many action scenes, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t interesting. Go see it and find out a little bit more about what happened and how Pablo Escobar was caught!

I never saw the TV show, Breaking Bad. There! I said it. It's out there.  I knew the premise and I couldn't invest myself into a show based on drug trade.  Honestly, I'm tired of entertainment media which glorifies drug trade through the Hollywood lens. Still, I like Bryan Cranston as an actor and the title, The Infiltrator, sounded intriguing.

From the beginning, the film captures the attention of the audience.  Great opening scene lays the foundation for a worthwhile movie adventure. The Infiltrator is far from a cartel glorification film. Based on a true story, the film depicts the gritty sequence of events which lead to the arrest and conviction of several of executives of the Columbia Medellin drug cartel. I liked that the movie does not romanticize Pablo Escobar. The person, Escobar, is almost an after thought with little more than a cameo, but his brutality is pervasive throughout. The story felt authentic.

The cast knocks it out of the park on this one. Bryan Cranston is was made to play Robert Mazur.  This is the best I have ever seen him. Cranston plays the role sincere to the life of a regular Joe who is just trying to survive and protect his family, while heavily imbedded into the financial world of a dangerous drug cartel.  While I can't pick any bad members of this cast, I do have to give John Leguizamo a nod. I think Leguizamo, as Cranston's unlikely partner in the undercover assignment serves to keep the action going. Diane Kruger and Benjamin Bratt also impress.

By and large, I have been disappointed with this Summer's movie fare. Films that were supposed by watch-worthy disappointed. The Infiltrator is not one of those disappointments.  I was really impressed.  I think a theater experience makes the experience more real, the brutality more gritty and the fear more scary. It was a great two hours.

The Infiltrator, based on a true story, is open nationwide today.
