Book Review: The Valley by John Renehan

The Valley
Author: John Renehan
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Mystery
Released: March 1st 2016
Review Source: Dutton | NetGalley

An intricate mystery unfolds against the backdrop of the Afghanistan war in this former Army Captain's gripping portrait of a fighting division holding a remote outpost.

"You're going up the Valley."

Black didn't know its name, but he knew it lay deeper and higher than any other place Americans had ventured. You had to travel through a network of interlinked valleys, past all the other remote American outposts, just to get to its mouth. Everything about the place was myth and rumor, but one fact was clear: There were many valleys in the mountains of Afghanistan, and most were hard places where people died hard deaths. But there was only one Valley. It was the farthest, and the hardest, and the worst.

When Black, a deskbound admin officer, is sent up the Valley to investigate a warning shot fired by a near-forgotten platoon, he can only see it as the final bureaucratic insult in a short and unhappy Army career. What he doesn't know is that the warning shot was not the worst crime in the Valley before his arrival, and his investigation will not only disturb the platoon's dark secrets but launch a shattering personal odyssey of obsession and discovery.

The Valley is a mind-bending mystery and a riveting tour de force that announces John Renehan as a great American storyteller.

The Valley is more of a mystery story than a military tale. So if you're a fan of mystery, then you should give this a try.

Lieutenant Black is about to embark a mission in which will put him into many trials. A mission in which he will need to trust his instincts and go with his conscious is advising him to do. There are times in which laws are written put it doesn't make them right. He will questioned these. A dilemma of being the perfect solider or a true hero. As Black is caught into an enigma in a remotest valley of Afghanistan, he will need to make his own decisions.

Let me say, I was in awe in how well written this book is. It felt so real. Like you were there with Lieutenant Black. You felt hostile, confused and scared. You didn't know what Black would do. Is he going to follow the book or is he going to trust his instincts? It was chaotic. What was the truth? What was he supposed to do?

Overall, I really enjoyed following Black's journey. He was a good character to cheer for. Follow him in this adventure, it's a good story to read.

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Vampire Academy and Bloodline series returns with the second installment in her acclaimed Age of X series.

Gameboard of the Gods introduced religious investigator Justin March and Mae Koskinen, the beautiful supersoldier assigned to protect him. Together they have been charged with investigating reports of the supernatural and the return of the gods, both inside the Republic of United North America and out. With this highly classified knowledge comes a shocking revelation: Not only are the gods vying for human control, but the elect—special humans marked by the divine—are turning against one another in bloody fashion.

Their mission takes a new twist when they are assigned to a diplomatic delegation headed by Lucian Darling, Justin’s old friend and rival, going into Arcadia, the RUNA’s dangerous neighboring country. Here, in a society where women are commodities and religion is intertwined with government, Justin discovers powerful forces at work, even as he struggles to come to terms with his own reluctantly acquired deity.

Meanwhile, Mae—grudgingly posing as Justin’s concubine—has a secret mission of her own: finding the illegitimate niece her family smuggled away years ago. But with Justin and Mae resisting the resurgence of the gods in Arcadia, a reporter’s connection with someone close to Justin back home threatens to expose their mission—and with it the divine forces the government is determined to keep secret.

Book Review: Captive: The Forbidden Side of Nightshade by A.D. Robertson + Giveaway

Captive

Genre: Paranormal Romance

The first adult novel set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Nightshade series, Captive delivers a steamy, forbidden romance between sworn enemies drawn together by an irrepressible desire.

Twenty-five-year-old Tristan Doran enjoys a life of incredible power and privilege. As a direct descendant of the Keepers—witches who have embraced dark magic—he defers to no one but his overlord, Lord Bosque Mar. For most of his life, Tristan has been kept out of the centuries-old Witches War, his bloodline too valuable to risk in battle.

But when a beautiful, young human Searcher named Sarah is captured and made a prisoner in his Irish castle, Tristan’s infatuation with her flings him headlong into the fray. Captive and captor, unable to contain their longing, embark on a passionate, forbidden romance together—only to learn that their love is at the heart of a prophecy predicting the downfall of the Keepers’ ages-old reign.

Captive explores the darker side of the richly imagined Nightshade universe, a fantasy world of powerful dark witches, shape-shifting wolf warriors, and fascinating history. The first of three erotic novels, Captive delves deeply into the fiery, illicit romance of two young lovers whose very desires invite their doom.

Call me surprised when I found out Andrea wrote this book. For some reason I had no idea and found out at BEA in NY this summer when I was walking around checking to see what author line to get in. Well needless to say I was late and was cut off before I could get my signed copy from Andrea but as soon as that happen I ran walked to Penguin's booth and viola! They had copies of Captive sitting there waiting for me. I was thrilled to be going back home to TX with a copy of this steamy book based in the Nightshade world that I love.

Captive in one word will captivated you. Its definitely a mature novel and not for the younger crowd. Yes it's in the Nightshade world but it's not at the young adult level. Andrea focused on older characters from that world to write about and write she did. There is one scene in particular that stands out just for the dramatic effect it had on me, I seriously was afraid to continue reading because I feared what would happen next and it would have scared me. That right there is powerful writing when the author can engage the reader like that. And just like that scene their were many more that had to you holding your breath or fanning yourself. Andrea really did a fantastic job delivering this older take in the Nightshade world.

In Captive the focus begins on a Searcher named Sarah. She has been given the permission to go find out what the Keepers are guarding on an island. So she knows it's a risky job but she has to do it. So when she is captured by a succubus and incubus from hell, you can say her day just got bad. Sarah knows if she wasn't at her rendezvous point on time, there would be no rescue mission to get her back. She would be considered dead.

Cue in Tristan, a very important descendant of the Keepers. Tristan lives in the castle on that island that Sarah wanted to enter. Well Tristan and Sarah finally meet in a very uncomfortable manner to Sarah but intriguing to Tristan. Thank goodness he has morals and respect if not it could have been horrific their first meet up. Sarah ends up becoming a prisoner of sorts at the castle. The Searcher and Keeper start to become chummy with each other and begin to get to know more about one another and their histories. When trust is finally reached between the two that ignites a passion and secretive relationship they know if they get caught might just be the death of both of them. Now they must figure out how to escape and gain both their freedoms.  Are they doomed or blessed to have come into each other lives?

This book will please any fan of romance. Now begins the wait for the next book in the series. Can't wait to find out what next.

In celebration and to get the word out of this soon to be released adult novel. We will be giving something very special away. But first we want everyone to know that A.D. Robertson is New York Times bestselling author Andrea Cremer's pen name that she created for her first adult novel. Book Review: Covet by Tracey Garvis Graves

Covet
Author: Tracey Garvis Graves
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Romance/Chick Lit
Released: September 17th 2013

Tracey Garvis Graves, the New York Times bestselling author of On the Island, returns.

What if the life you wanted, and the woman you fell in love with, belonged to someone else?

Chris and Claire Canton's marriage is on life support. Downsized during the recession and out of work for a year, Chris copes by retreating to a dark place where no one can reach him, not even Claire. When he's offered a position that will keep him away from home four nights a week, he dismisses Claire's concern that time apart could be the one thing their fragile union can't weather. Their suburban life may look idyllic on the outside, but Claire has never felt so disconnected from Chris, or so lonely.

Local police officer Daniel Rush used to have it all, but now he goes home to an empty house every night. He pulls Claire over during a routine traffic stop and runs into her again at the 4th of July parade. When Claire is hired to do some graphic design work for the police department, her friendship with Daniel grows, and soon they're spending hours together.

Claire loves the way Daniel makes her feel, and the way his face lights up when she walks into the room. Daniel knows that Claire's marital status means their relationship will never be anything other than platonic. But it doesn't take long before Claire and Daniel are in way over their heads, and skating close to the line that Claire has sworn she'll never cross.

My first experience with Tracey Garvis Graves was when I read her fantastic novel On the Island that had just been picked up by publishers after being a success as a self published novel. I've been patiently waiting for more from Tracey and when I heard she would be at BEA and signing Covet. I was ecstatic. One I would finally get to meet her in person, which I did and second I would get to read more from her.

Covet surprised me. It's nothing like On the Island, so if you go in expecting that deserted island and hot couple, you will be disappointed. Covet is definitely written for adults. I don't think anyone under the age of 21 will relate with Covet unless they have a family or are married. This novel will hit home for many who will read it. Those readers will be the ones to understand the struggles and issues that the characters experience in Covet. Its not your normal HEA, this is real life at its finest and it shows it takes hard work sometimes to reach your Happy Ever After.

Claire and Chris are the main couple in this book. They have been married for over 10 years and are struggling after Chris was laid off due to the recession. Chris separated himself from his wife and kids pretty much. Leaving Claire to fend for her family while he isolated himself. When Chris finally acquires a new job, it requires for him to be away for days at a time traveling. Pretty much it still feels like Claire doesn't have a husband and the kids miss their father. This situation in any marriage will hurt the relationship. How can Claire ignore her feelings. I myself would not be able to. So months pass and Claire has a daily routine that when Chris is home she feels he gets in the way. Their is just no passion left in their marriage. Then one day Claire meets a police officer and slowly but surely they develop a "friendship". Claire begins to wonder if this friendship with Daniel is not healthy or if this is what she has been deserving for years now. Just someone that will give her the time of day. For many this is cheating but what is Claire to do when the man she said I do too doesn't acknowledge her.

You do get to understand Chris since his character is one of the 3 point of views Tracey wrote the story in. Daniel and Claire get their own parts too. Covet as I mention will relate to many and this is realistic fiction at its finest. Covet is written in the same beautiful prose as On the Island but the scenario and story are its own entity. You will ask yourself, "Why do I want to read sometime so deep and compacted when I have my won issues I deal with?". I am going to say yes you will want too, because Covet is beautifully written and even though its complicated, just maybe during that time you are reading it your problems might not seems as complicated. Tracey wasn't afraid to touch strong subjects many deal with on an everyday level, she masterfully executed the delivery and show us that in the end you are the only one that can decide what is right or wrong for your life.

Thank you to Tracey for an amazing journey with these characters as they dealt with their demons and showing us even after the world seems to be closing in on you their is still a light at the end of the tunnel and a Happy Ever After too.

p.s. I HEART Covet's cover. Its beautiful.

Book Review: Uncharted by Tracey Garvis Graves

On the Island Reviews: Yara | Deitre

Summary: (via Dutton) Fans everywhere will be reunited with T.J. and Anna, and will learn the truth behind the mystery of the island’s shack and its skeleton, which was left unsolved in On the Island.

Some time before Anna and T.J.’s plane crash-landed, twenty-three-year-old dot-com millionaire Owen Sparks walked away from his charmed life with one goal in mind: get as far away as possible. An uncharted island in the Maldives seemed like a perfectly logical place to leave it all behind.

Not part of Owen’s plan was Calia Reed, the beautiful British girl on holiday in the Maldives with her brother. Now Owen wonders if getting away from it all might be more enjoyable with a carefree girl who doesn’t know anything about the life he left behind. But Owen had no idea how much his carefully detailed plans would go awry. Nor did he realize that the decisions he made would forever change the lives of two passengers who boarded a plane in Chicago.

When Owen turns up unexpectedly at Anna and T.J.'s door with an incredible story to tell, they will learn just how intertwined their lives really are. Readers will get to catch up with Anna and T.J. and will finally find out the truth behind who built the shack on the island, and just who the mysterious “Bones” really was.

UNCHARTED has it all: an exciting new page-turning story filled with romance and surprise, satisfying resolution for On the Island’s Anna and T.J., and even a sneak peek of COVET, Tracey’s first hardcover novel out September 17, 2013.

Tracey has gone and done if again and with a novella not even full size novel. Uncharted just like On the Island struck a chord deep in me. The story told is beautiful and meaningful but what you walk away with from reading the book is even deeper. Tracey has this gift of writing scenes or simple words but piecing them together in a manner that you can relate to 110%.

Uncharted is the story of Owen. Owen we come to learn is the person behind building the shack on the island that Anna and T. J. survived. Owen came to see them 10 years later after finding out they had survived the same island he spent over a year in at his will before they crashed on to it. You'll discover what Owen went through on the island and why he chose to be there and how all his actions intentional or non-intentional led to bringing together Anna and TJ. The purpose behind Owen's visit is to get some sort of forgiveness because he feels that it's all his fault what took place on that island. What he doesn't realize is that, in more ways than one that majestic uncharted island actually brought more than one life together.

Uncharted will have you thinking to yourself it's very true. The past is the past. You can't go back and change it but you can definitely guide where you want the future to take you. And if you had to go through some tough times and bad choices to get to that amazing future, so be it. Just survive it and then live it to the fullest. Just know that you wouldn't be where you are today in your life if it wasn't for your past and the choices and roads you did take.

Thank you Tracey for writing this book and all those before it. I cannot wait until the next one to see what journey you take. Tracey Garvis Graves is that author you don't even read the summary of the book, you just buy it and read it and love it. Tracey's next novel to be published is called Covet, I can tell you right now that I enjoyed reading it as well. My review will be posted closer to release time but I would strongly suggest pre-ordering it already.

Interview

OUaT: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I'm married and I have two children. I live in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa. A lot of people confuse Iowa with Idaho.

OUaT: What do you do when you are not writing?
Family time is very important to me and I enjoy hanging out with my husband and kids. I love to read and I also spend a fair amount of time on social media.

OUaT: Do you have a day job as well?
Not anymore. I feel very fortunate that I can write full-time.

OUaT: When did you first start writing and when did you finish your book?
I started writing On the Island in the spring of 2010 and published it in the fall of 2011.

OUaT: How did you choose the genre you write in?
I love women's fiction and contemporary romance. On the Island is often categorized as both.

OUaT: Where do you get your ideas?
They usually just come to me when I'm doing something mundane like folding clothes.

OUaT: Do you ever experience writer’s block?
Sometimes. But it usually means I need to open up my subconscious a bit and let the problem work itself out.

OUaT: Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I'm sort of an outliner in that I need to have a general idea of the beginning, middle, and end. But I change things as I go along.

OUaT: Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
Stephen King's The Stand is the first book I remember reading and thinking, "Wow. I'd love to be able to write like that someday." It's one of my favorite books of all time.

OUaT: Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?
I received nothing but form rejections from every agent I queried. If self-publishing hadn't been an option, On the Island would still be sitting on my hard drive.

OUaT: If you had to go back and do it all over, is there any aspect of your novel or getting it published that you would change?
I don't think so. Even though the rejections were discouraging, I almost think they were a blessing in disguise and I couldn't be happier with the way everything turned out.

OUaT: How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for you genre?
I used a combination of social media and paid advertising (I ran ads on Pixel of Ink and Kindle Nation Daily). But it was the word-of-mouth advertising from readers that really made On the Island successful. I'm eternally grateful.

OUaT: Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published? No.

OUaT: Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
Covet is my next full-length novel. It's women's fiction and it will be released on 9/3/13. I love women's fiction and I wanted to try my hand at it. Here's the blurb from Amazon: What if the life you wanted, and the woman you fell in love with, belonged to someone else?

Chris and Claire Canton's marriage is on life support. Downsized during the recession and out of work for a year, Chris copes by retreating to a dark place where no one can reach him, not even Claire. When he's offered a position that will keep him away from home four nights a week, he dismisses Claire's concern that time apart could be the one thing their fragile union can't weather. Their suburban life may look idyllic on the outside, but Claire has never felt so disconnected from Chris, or so lonely.

Local police officer Daniel Rush used to have it all, but now he goes home to an empty house every night. He pulls Claire over during a routine traffic stop, and they run into each other again at the 4th of July parade.

OUaT: Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
Writers are often told to "write what they know." My advice is to write using your imagination because if you only write what you've experienced personally, you'll eventually run out of ideas. If you use your imagination, you'll always have something to draw from. That said, all of my books are a combination of things I've come across, whether it's something I've seen on T.V. or read about, or something that happened to a friend of a friend. I'm always paying attention to what's going on around me because you never know what might inspire a character or idea.

OUaT: What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
I love to write epilogues and endings.

OUaT: How did you come up with the title?
For On the Island, I really wanted to make it clear that this was a desert island book. For Covet, I wanted a word that perfectly captured the main conflict of the book.

OUaT: Did you design the cover?
I selected the cover art for the self-published version of On the Island. Penguin chose the new cover when they re-issued the book. Covet's cover will be handled by Penguin's in-house design department.

OUaT: What project are you working on now?
I am currently hard at work on an On the Island companion novella. Readers will have a chance to meet another character from the book, and Anna and T.J. will be in it, too!

OUaT: Will you have a new book coming out soon?
The On the Island companion novella will be released on 6/4/13.
