#GreatestShowman🎩
“The Greatest Showman” is a bold and original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and the sense of wonder we feel when dreams come to life. Inspired by the ambition and imagination of P.T. Barnum, “The Greatest Showman” tells the story of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a mesmerizing spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. “The Greatest Showman” is directed by exciting new filmmaker, Michael Gracey, with songs by Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“La La Land”) and starring Academy Award nominee Hugh Jackman. Jackman is joined by Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams, Zendaya, Zac Efron and Rebecca Ferguson.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN OPENS IN THEATERS NATIONWIDE DECEMBER 20, 2017

It was only a few months ago, that the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus shuttered “The Greatest Show on Earth.”  It was a bittersweet event that was simulcast on YouTube, for the world to see. Just when audiences were beginning to feel circus withdrawal pains, this year’s musical spectacular, The Greatest Showman, comes along with all of the memories and magic of real “under the big top” moments.

The Greatest Showman is inspired by the life of P.T. Barnum, founder of the what would become the Barnum & Bailey Circus.  Focus on the “inspired by” part, for greatest enjoyment.  This isn’t a true biography. The film takes creative liberty with the details of Barnum’s life, and the resulting film is better for that.

Showman is this year’s musical extravaganza with a hopeful message, like that of last year’s hit movie musical, La La Land. While the musical lyrics for La La Land and Showman are written by the same team, Showman’s music has an entirely authentic circus feel.  From the opening musical number through to the closing, the contemporary songs are upbeat and catchy.  They convey the hopeful and defiant spirit of the characters.  The music is easily Showman’s biggest scene-stealer.

That isn’t to say that the cast is overshadowed by the music.  It would take a lot to overshadow Hugh Jackman (as P.T. Barnum) who is perfect in his role and the all-star supporting cast. Zac Efron (as Phillip Carlyle), Zendaya (as Anne Wheeler) and Keala Settle (as Lettie) provide very strong musical and acting performances.  The best scene in the film is easily the Barnum / Carlyle negotiation dance number but Lettie’s voice carries many of other musical moments. Settle has a Broadway voice that inspires an audience to tears, in a good way.  The only exception to the cast was the performance of Michelle Williams (as Charity Barnum).   Williams seemed somewhat out of her league.  The weakest of the musical numbers was Williams’ solo near the end of the movie.  It weakened the ending of the film some to have Williams try a solo just then.

With the exception of Williams’ solo, there is still a ton of good in Showman.  It is quite a sight to behold.  In carrying through with the circus feel, the audience is almost overwhelmed with dramatic and beautiful visuals.  Every scene looks like a circus. The colors are rich.  The set design is very detailed and impeccable. The costuming was gorgeous.  It was especially impressive that none of the bold coloring or busy sets were over the top.  Somehow, it all worked perfectly.  It looked wonderfully mesmerizing on the big screen.

The best aspect of Showman is it’s hopeful message.  Through its contemporary soundtrack and its spectacular dance numbers, Showman conveys the timeless themes of  “following your dreams,” “persevering over adversity” and “being kind.” Better still, because of its PG rating, Showman is a film for the whole family. No four-letter words, no risqué concepts.

Go see Showman. Then, go buy the soundtrack. Get yourself a top hat and join a circus.  Fine, that last thing is probably a bit much, but that’s how much fun the movie was.  It is perfect for the holiday season and perfect for the whole family.  See The Greatest Showman in theaters, playing everywhere.

Eddie The Eagle
Drama
Release: February 26, 2016

Cast: Taron Egerton, Christopher Walken, and Hugh Jackman

Inspired by true events, Eddie the Eagle is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. From producers of Kingsman: The Secret Service, Eddie the Eagle stars Taron Egerton as Eddie, the loveable underdog with a never say die attitude.

Eddie the Eagle tells the true story of Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards and his wonderful underdog tale. Eddie ever since being a young boy, all he ever wanted to do was become an Olympic athlete, but the thing about Eddie was, that he was no athlete. Athlete or not, it was Eddie's never say die attitude and spirit that took Eddie to the 1988 Winter Olympics, being a part of the British Olympic ski team making him and his story known worldwide.

Who doesn't love a good underdog story?  And to the T, this is nothing more than that. Eddie the Eagle is surely one of the most enjoyable feel good, and heartfelt biopic's I've seen in quite a while, and what makes it that, is the heart the movie has. The film reflects and plays off a quote (which you see on screen during the movie) by Pierre de Coubertin (one of the Olympic committee founders) which says,  "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.". And when looking at the film, that perfectly describes Eddie's, will, demeanor, and mind set throughout the story.

Have to give credit where credits due to Taron Egerton for his portrayal of Eddie Edwards. I didn't see Taron Egerton, or "the kid from Kingsman" here, I saw Egerton doing a superb job transforming himself into Eddie. Hugh Jackman was a good sync with his role as Eddie's coach, Bronson Peary. Another role, or should I say roles I enjoyed came from Iris Berben and Keith Allen who play Eddie’s, Mom and Dad. It was fun watching their characters progress throughout the story as Eddie progressed on his journey to the Olympics.

The ski-jumping scenes were also quite enjoyable, and that's thanks to director, Dexter Fletcher. The way he captured the moments in detail, whether it was an intense wipeout or a breathtaking soar, is what keeps your eyes glued to the screen, and yourself on the edge of your seat whenever a ski-jumping scene is about to come on.

At the end of the day, Eddie the Eagle is a charming and overall pleasing film. This underdog tale has everything you'd want from an underdog tale, a likable character you can get behind and cheer for, the struggles, and a nice mix of comedy. If you enjoy underdog films, Olympic films, and if you enjoyed the movie "Cooling Runnings"( which has a fun little Easter egg in the film) you'll definitely enjoy this movie. Eddie the Eagle will leave you with a smile at the end of it and is a film I'd absolutely recommend checking out in a theater near you.

If you are old enough to remember the 1988 Winter Olympics, you remember the two big stories that came out of them. There was the story of the Jamaican bobsled team and there was the story of the British ski jumper, Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards. This week's movie is about the second of these memorable stories of the 1988 Games, the story of Eddie The Eagle.

Eddie The Eagle is a completely charming, totally entertaining biopic. It's the kind of story that needs to be told. It's the kind of story that people like to hear. I love an underdog story. If you read up on Eddie Edwards, you will realize that he had every obstacle that an Olympic dreamer could have, and he didn't let any of the obstacles dissuade him from the pursuit of his dream.

I love what Hugh Jackman (as Bronson Peary) and Taron Egerton (as Eddie Edwards) do with their roles. The duo has great rapport. The chemistry and timing was enjoyable. There is very little that Jackman can't do and Egerton was very believable. I appreciate the physicality that both actors bring to the film.

Anyone who has faced adversity will identify with this story. This is a great movie for sports families. Loved being reminded that "the most important thing is not to win, but to take part." Because of the themes about hard work, it's also good for the younger generation. It's not going to win any awards, but it is a good use of two hours and I found myself with fists in the air, cheering at Eddie's accomplishments.

I will say, there are a couple of moments when the dialogue gets risqué (for the youngest generation), but the moments go by fast. It's not anything that should keep anyone out of the theater. Even if you see Eddie The Eagle just to get feel for what winter is (because you live in a part of the world that never sees snow) it isn't a waste of time! See Eddie The Eagle in theaters now.

Official Website: The Wolverine Movie

Storyline: In modern day Japan, Wolverine is out of his depth in an unknown world as he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before. Written by Twentieth Century Fox

Was it necessary to make a sequel or second spin-off for the Wolverine character? I could have done without and just be content with the success of the X-Men films. I personally prefer when all the X-Men characters are all together because that creates movie magic. That being said was ‘The Wolverine’ entertaining, sure it was but never at the level of the X-Men films. I took my 11-year-old son with me to screen the film and he was bored at times just like I was during the film. When the action was in full effect, we could not take our eyes of the screen but when it died down to just the story, there might have been a few times we yawned. It sort of pains me to write that because one of my favorites X-Men characters is Wolverine and Hugh Jackman plays him well.

The story told in the film was very deep for a character that came from a comic book. The Wolverine is about Logan and his interior battle with himself about being immortal and everyone that he has lost. He blames himself for so much and would rather end his immortality than live with it and do good-by it. Between the nightmares and dreams he suffers that he keeps seeing Jane and her asking for Logan to come to her and pretty much give up so they can be together again to him deciding to live in the Yukon mountain and seclude himself from the world, was depressing. These are the scenes that my son was bored with. As a grown up I can understand what they wanted to show but this is a Marvel Comic character and everyone expects to see superhero events and those characters doing crazy stuff saving others or the world, not getting all angst and wanting to end their life. The movie does pick up finally when he is summoned and things just start to go south where he is. Logan turns on his superhero side and starts protecting the grand-daughter of a Japanese solider he saved during his imprisonment at a Japanese POW camp when the atomic bomb was delivered. This same man now dying offers him a solution to his immortality but Logan refuses. Now the man passes away at his funeral chaos erupts when the Yakuza attack at the funeral. Logan realizes while he is fighting something is off, he isn’t healing like he does. He still continues on to save and hide out with Mariko, the granddaughter of Yashida. She just inherited everything from her grandfather and has become a big target. Now you have the Yakuza, Samurai’s and the Viper femme fatale nurse after her and Logan.

On the run Wolverine is facing for the first time something he has never had to before, the fear of dying. He is no longer healing and has become human. This is just the beginning of the crazy events that connect one to the other. Logan or Wolverine have never been this vulnerable and when Ninjas and a Viper attack, will it be enough to survive and protect Mariko.

Marvel knows one thing and its fight scenes or action pack scenes. The Wolverine has plenty of those including one done on top on a bullet train that was fantastic. Hugh also does his part of Logan and Wolverine exceptional when he isn’t wanting to end his life. As a mom watching the movie with her on, that just doesn’t make sense when all kids or teens look up to these characters. So to summon this all up, I recommend going to see The Wolverine is you are a true die-hard fan of the X-Men franchise, you will overlook the lagging parts and enjoy the fantastic one. The will compensate one another. It was enjoyable to watch and I’ll probably buy it on DVD when it comes out to see again. We did see it in 3-D and I didn’t really see a need for it as far as 3-D. Nothing really jump at me, I’m sure in 2-D it would have looked just as good.

Now what I am about to tell you will actually make up for the whole movie. The end credits were EPIC. I will not spoil this exciting future development in the X-Men world but O M G was it Epic! My jaw fell to the ground once it began. What was revealed will seriously make you go bat-crazy wanting more NOW. So if you ask me about seeing in theaters I say Yes and DON'T MISS THE END CREDITS!!!
