Peppermint is a revenge story centering on a young mother who finds herself with nothing to lose, and is now going to take from her enemies the very life they stole from her.
When I first thought the trailer for this movie, I got very excited to see Jennifer Garner as a badass once more. I got so hyped up because I love seeing a woman take no crap and standing up for what she believes, quite the opposite of how Hollywood represented us just a few decades ago. We were always the helpless, scared, never knew what to do, screaming, fainting idiots men needed to save. Being brought up differently (my father would tell me to never put up with any man's crap...well, he used another word but I can't say it here ;P), I am loving this trend, no, realization of Hollywood movie makers that we women in fact can do everything a man can do, and we don't need any saving.
This movie, as I am sure you've seen in the trailer (and if you haven't, I have provided the link below), you see Riley North (Jennifer Garner) loses her family in shooting ordered by some Latin drug lord. As anyone else who survives the horrific event would, she tries to find justice by identifying the murderers and going to trial to testify. What she didn't expect was to find out just how corrupt the so called "justice system" really is. Well, not the system, but some of the people in it. When she realizes this, she doesn't know who to trust, so she just takes matters into her own hands.
Not going to lie, the movie IS good and I really, really enjoyed it, but the plot is a little predictable and done. I just liked the execution of it. One thing I loved the most about the movie is the way everything was delivered. The movie starts with you seeing Riley (Jennifer Garner) with her daughter and talking to another mom with her daughter. Immediately you get a sense of the type of person each one is, next scene you meet her husband, Chris (Jeff Hephner), and then we get straight to the point. Everything that happens is straight to the point, but you aren't left with any questions or wondering how one thing happened or why someone did what. It's all understood and well done.
There is, however, one down thing to the plot of the movie: there's supposed to be a twist in the end of the movie, but it's a little bit too done and you can see it from a few miles away. But it's not anything that ruins the movie or anything. It's just something that could've been done without. That's as much as I can say without spoiling it.
As for Jennifer Garner. Oh. My. God! I loved her in this movie. Honestly, she barely speaks in the movie, and yet, you don't need her to talk much. Her performance was outstanding, every emotion Riley felt was very well portrayed, and you get to really feel and understand her. Honestly, believe it or not, in her shoes, I probably would've done the same or something similar (I'm not sure I can kill people). She had a very "The Punisher" quality to her and it reminded me a lot of the Netflix show I love. Even from when I saw the trailer I thought that.
In conclusion: go see the movie. It's well done, and nothing is better than a woman kicking every man she encounter's behind. She really did all of us women justice in that movie. Goes to show what happens when you mess with us. What's that old saying? "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn'd".

If you're old enough to have been a fan of Jennifer Garner's action television series, Alias, you will be happy to see Garner in an action role again. While Garner has spent a decade playing mostly goodie mom roles, there is a good bit of kick-ass in her still. This week's film, Peppermint, is a fun action flick with a cool chic lead.
The entertainment world needs cool chic leads. It's great to see women in the role of rescuer, instead the rescued. And Garner's character, Riley, is no victim. Even as a tragic event sets Riley on a path of revenge, there is no real time to pity her. It was great to see a woman who doesn't spend half of the movie in her feelings. There is a job to be done and Riley goes right to it.
The plot moves at a lightening pace. The fast pacing works well for Peppermint. This story isn't entirely novel. It's a stylized vendetta in the spirit of John Wick. Someone does something bad to someone else and that person wants revenge. People know what to expect, so there is no need for a ton of back story or details. Peppermint jumps right into the action and stays there.
More than anything, the movie is fun. The guns are cool. The combat is well choreographed. The Skid Row setting feels authentic. The soundtrack matches the genre perfectly.
Go see Peppermint. Support a female-lead film. It is fun without over thinking. At a short run-time, the minutes will fly-by. The action will not disappoint. Jennifer Garner never disappoints. Peppermint is playing everywhere now.

Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Riverdale, The Flash, Supergirl), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.
It isn't very often that a movie manages to accurately mirror the generation for which it was made. Where previous generations had Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Breakfast Club or Pretty in Pink, the current generation now has Love, Simon. It is that much of a stand-out.
Based on Becky Albertalli's novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Love, Simon is the story of Simon, a high school senior who has everything going for him in his school and family life, and is hiding the fact that he is gay.
Simon (played by Nick Robinson) convinced himself that he could wait until after high school to live his true life for, well, a list of reasons. But "because everyone deserves a great love story," keeping Simon's sexuality a secret was harder than Simon anticipated. Love, Simon is a genuinely great "coming of age" story.
All of the high school archetypes are included. The fresh-faced ensamble cast, including Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Logan Miller, Miles Heizer and Keiynan Londale, has princesses, basket cases, brains, jocks and criminals. The entire casts' work feels very genuine. All of the characters are likable; even the bully has redeeming qualities.
Speaking of bullying, it was refreshing to see how the topic is approached in the film. The social media aspects of the bullying felt real, especially for a younger audience. The anti-bullying message was very timely and Love, Simon drove home the point perfectly. There were several empowering, fists in the air, moments.
The teenage cast was well balanced by the parental units in the film. Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Garner and Tony Hale wonderfully portray the parents to teenagers that everyone wants to be. Tony Hale (as Mr. Worth) was painfully and comically trying his best to connect with his students, embodying the angst of parents everywhere.
Love, Simon is through and through a great film. It will speak to LGBTQA teens and anyone who feels like they don't fit in. The movie has a sub-plot for everyone. Younger audiences will appreciate seeing others like themselves on-screen and older audiences will appreciate the John Hughes-esque formula. The themes are real, but developed in a light-hearted enough manner that the film is okay for the whole family.
You can't go wrong with Love, Simon's feel-good vibe. It is one of those buzzy movies that everyone will be talking about after it opens. To be in the know, make sure to catch Love, Simon in theaters. It is playing everywhere now.

Being a native Texan, I had heard the story of the Beam family and their miracle daughter. I was looking forward to seeing it on the big screen, especially with Jennifer Gardner, Queen Latifah and Eugenio Derbez in the cast. I'm happy to report that this week's film, Miracles from Heaven, more than delivered. It was so good!
I appreciated the realness of this true to life story. I liked that the Beam family, the family on which this film is based, could be my neighbors. It made the story more relatable that the family was not over-glamorized. The Beams felt perfectly flawed. The flaws work to further the message of the film, the message that this story could happen to anyone.
Miracles from Heaven makes no bones about it being a faith based film. It doesn't apologize for its faith, but it doesn't press faith on the audience, either. More than anything, the film tells a story, it tells you what it thinks of the story, but ultimately allows the audience to decide what, if anything, the story means to them. I loved that it wasn't preachy about faith. Felt well-balanced.
I loved the cast. I've been a big fan of Eugenio Derbez since Instructions Not Included. I wish he had a bigger presence in American cinema, and I enjoyed him in this film. Jennifer Gardner did a wonderful job. Her portrayal of a protective mom tugged at my heart. Kylie Rogers as the ailing Anna Beam will bring tears to your eyes. So, be prepared for that.
Miracles from Heaven is a tear-jerker, for sure. Bring tissues. However, it isn't a depressing film. There are some hard moments, but it all feels genuine and tasteful. It's a great film for holidays. Wonderful for families. And you don't have to be of any particular faith or have faith in a larger power to enjoy it. It is a good story for the sake of good story-telling. See Miracles from Heaven open in theaters now.
