Gayle Forman's Just One Day Optioned by Universal!

GUYS! Universal Pictures has optioned the bestselling YA novels Just One Day and its follow-up Just One Year!!!!! EXCUSE ME WHILE I FREAK OUT!

"Fake Empire heads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are on board to produce through their Universal-based shingle."

One Day, released Aug. 20, 2013, told the story from the young woman’s point of view while One Year, published in September 2014, told the young man’s story.

The books have been described as being in the tone of Before Sunrise and 500 Days of Summer.

After spending one life-changing day in Paris with laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter, sheltered American good girl Allyson “Lulu” Healey discovered her new lover had disappeared without a trace. Just One Day followed Allyson’s quest to reunite with Willem; Just One Year chronicled the pair’s year apart from Willem’s perspective. Now, back together at last, this delectable e-novella reveals the couple’s final chapter.

You know when have to do something and you forget about another important thing? Well this happened to me with Just One Night. Since I attended BEA the week the novella came out, I honestly completely had other things in mind. When I return, one night, moments before closing my eyes, my mind completely remember and I had to forget about sleep and read. OMG, it was worth it!

Just One Night is sweet, sexy and had me smiling so late at night. *sigh* It was a fairy tale. I finally got to read what happened next after Williem and Allyson reunite. It was an emotional moment for me. We get to see how their hard work paid off. Their love conquered fate. Maybe it wasn’t time for them to be together then, but NOW they have a lifetime to be together. Seriously, I was emotionally touched with their reunion.

As a fan of Gayle, I was thrilled to see her at BEA.I tried hard not to fangirl so much, but fail. Unfortunately, since I didn’t read Just One Night before seeing her, I couldn’t thank her. She made justice for these two and I am so glad she did. I would have thanked her in person. So, thank you Gayle. Thank you for making Willem and Allyson have their happily ever after and sharing it with your devoted fans.

Just One Day. Just One Year. Just One Read.

Before you find out how their story ends, remember how it began....

When he opens his eyes, Willem doesn’t know where in the world he is—Prague or Dubrovnik or back in Amsterdam. All he knows is that he is once again alone, and that he needs to find a girl named Lulu. They shared one magical day in Paris, and something about that day—that girl—makes Willem wonder if they aren’t fated to be together. He travels all over the world, from Mexico to India, hoping to reconnect with her. But as months go by and Lulu remains elusive, Willem starts to question if the hand of fate is as strong as he’d thought. . . .
The romantic, emotional companion to Just One Day, this is a story of the choices we make and the accidents that happen—and the happiness we can find when the two intersect.

I’ve been highly anticipating this book and now that it is here… Oh the J.O.Y! Before opening this book, I was expecting something else. I was sure Just One Year was going to pick up right where Just One Day ended. Instead, we get Will’s journey in which he redefines himself. None the less, this was an excellent read. Gayle Forman is by far one of the most talented authors out there. Her words are beautifully written and Just One Year is just one of her masterpiece.

We all know Just One Day follows the romantic story of when Lulu (Allyson) and Willem met. We all read about their adventure together in the city of love, Paris and how both unknowing fall in love. We learned about Allyson’s self-discovery and now it’s time to learn more about Will.

Just One Year starts off the morning when Will gets beat up, in which we all learned in the first novel. However, we get his version of the story. We learn in this novel the pain this morning brings him during his journey of self-discovery. He is hurt physically but more importantly, he is lost emotionally.

For years Will is in search of something he isn't quite sure of, always on the move, seeking to fulfill that emptiness. But with Lulu in the picture this becomes more challenging for him to discover. When he realizes love is not something you protect but something you risk, worth staying… In the end, Will finds his missing piece, his double happiness.

Just one girl. Just One Day. Just One Year. This is such as a heartwarming journey!

Note to Gayle – Please, pretty please we need a third book ;)

Blog Tour: Just One Year by Gayle Forman | New York's Cameo

OUaT is extremely excited to be a part of the Just One Year blog tour. We are HUGE fans of Gayle Forman and love all her novels. Today Gayle shares why New York makes a cameo in her books.

Welcome to the Just One Year blog tour! After spending an amazing day and night together in Paris, Just One Year is Willem’s story, picking up where Allyson’s journey in Just One Day ended. In honor of the world-spanning romance, we asked author Gayle Forman to share her memories for 12 different cities, each of which is featured in either Just One Day or Just One Year (or both!). Follow along on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout September as Gayle tells her story in anticipation of the October release of Just One Year!

After having a starring role in Where She Went, my beloved city gets cameos in the latest books. Much as I love NYC, it has to share the spotlight. It was kind of a perfect spot for Allyson to visit in Just One Day, because when she initially sees Melanie there, and goes to hipster Greenpoint to hear a band play, she is at her lowest, and New York is a place that kicks you in the gut when you are down. Hence, Allyson feels out of place, like a tourist in her own country. When she returns toward the end of the book with Dee, she is much more at home.

I don’t want to get too specific about New York’s role in Just One Year, but I will say that the last few times I’ve been to Amsterdam, arguably my favorite city after my hometown, I’ve noticed the similarities between it and Gotham. It’s not one of scale. Amsterdam is a doll’s house, NYC is a giant’s castle. But it’s a vibe. One of tolerance, which isn’t to be confused with liberalness, though both cities are very progressive. Tolerance is born out of pragmatism, a live-and-let-live necessity when you live cheek-by-jowl with so many other people (The Netherlands might be tiny, but it’s one of the most population dense countries in the world.) In any case, New York was once called New Amsterdam, and in some ways the cities still feel linked. In the books, they certainly are.

After spending an amazing day and night together in Paris, Just One Year is Willem's story, picking up where Just One Day ended. His story of their year of quiet longing and near misses is a perfect counterpoint to Allyson's own as Willem undergoes a transformative journey, questioning his path, finding love, and ultimately, redefining himself.

From the New York Times bestselling author of If I Stay
Allyson Healey's life is exactly like her suitcase—packed, planned, ordered. Then on the last day of her three-week post-graduation European tour, she meets Willem. A free-spirited, roving actor, Willem is everything she’s not, and when he invites her to abandon her plans and come to Paris with him, Allyson says yes. This uncharacteristic decision leads to a day of risk and romance, liberation and intimacy: 24 hours that will transform Allyson’s life.
A book about love, heartbreak, travel, identity, and the "accidents” of fate, Just One Day shows us how sometimes in order to get found, you first have to get lost. . . and how often the people we are seeking are much closer than we know.
The first in a sweepingly romantic duet of novels. Willem’s story—Just One Year—is coming soon!

Summary: (from goodreads) A breathtaking journey toward self-discovery and true love, from the author of If I Stay

When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.

Just One Day is the first in a sweepingly romantic duet of novels. Willem’s story—Just One Year—is coming soon!

This was my first time reading anything by Gayle Forman and it definitely will not be my last. What an amazing writer Forman is! This was another read that felt so realistic. I was wary at first but I kept reading and I fell in love. I especially loved the Shakespeare throughout the book as well.

The book starts off with Allyson and her best friend Melanie standing in line to see Hamlet. They are on a Teen Tour of Europe before they start college. It’s the last stop of the tour and while waiting in line a group of people come up and hand out flyers to a free performance of Twelfth Night under the stars. One of the guys handing out the flyers caught Allyson’s eye. Allyson, the one who is always the “good girl” between her and Melanie, had the idea of skipping out on Hamlet to secretly go and see Twelfth Night. Can we say sneaky?? This surprises Melanie and of course she is down with anything fun and going against the rules. They end up going to the armature play and upon the end of the play “the” guy tosses Allyson a coin. Was this a sign? What could this mean?

The next day they are on the train to some of Melanie’s family before they head home and this is where we meet Willem. Melanie is nursing a hangover because after the play she went out drinking and decides to sleep. Allyson was hungry so she went to get some snacks. She decided to sit at a table and eat so she could let Melanie sleep when the cute guy from the play sat at her table!! What are the chances?? They hit it off immediately. Willem called Allyson Lulu, after a famous actress. How romantic!! My stomach was in knots and had butterflies by this point.

Finally it was time for them to get off the train and Allyson mentioned about how the Teen Tours didn’t get to go to Paris because of a strike. That is when Willem offered to take Allyson to Paris for a day, and then she could return to Melanie the next day. Hmmm, now this is when Allyson REALLY gets wild and agrees!!! She doesn’t even know Willem!!! And in a foreign country at that!! WHAT?? After that one beautiful day, Allyson wakes up alone. Now this is where I was so mad, hurt, and yes, I was crying.

Both Allyson and Melanie are off to college after they get back home. They are both in different colleges so their friendship has hit a rough spot. Now is the time where they make lives for themselves apart. It’s hard when the only person Allyson has been real friends with was Melanie. She also is torn from how things ended with Willem back in Paris. Will she ever get over him? How will she carry on?

This book was just spectacular!! When reading I kept asking myself if I would have ever done anything so brave. Unfortunately, the answer is no. I think that is why I loved this book so much. Allyson is everything I wish I was when I was younger. The book is not only about romance but about self-discovery. Forman had me from the beginning and I honestly couldn’t put the book down.
