Blog Tour: Compulsion | Martina Boone | Guest Post | Giveaway

Hello & welcome to the I Have A Compulsion for Magic blog tour! I'm so thrilled to be apart of the tour to celebrate the upcoming release of Martina Boone's debut, Compulsion. You can follow the entire tour here.

Compulsion
Heirs of Watson Island #1
Author: Martina Boone
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Southern Gothic
Released: October 28th 2014

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.

All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lives with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead--a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.

Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family's twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

Today’s Compulsion for Magic tour stop guest author understands how things can be both a blessing and a curse. The incredible vivid and original main character in Kat Zhang’s Hybrid Chronicles, including What’s Left of Me, Once We Were, and Echoes of Us, are two souls living in one body. There’s a constant push and pull between what’s best for one versus the other. She’s another of the authors who said generous things about Compulsion, so she’s here today to share her thoughts on living with magical abilities that are deeply limited or limiting.

But what about you? For a chance to win the HUGE tour mega prize of books and the $100 gift card, tell us about the magical gift you’d like to have or one you wouldn’t wish on yourself.
Here’s what Kat had to say . . .
If you could have any “everyday” magical gift, like finding lost things or knowing what people want, what gift would you wish for and why?
I'd love the ability to speak/read/understand all languages. Is that "everyday" enough? I love to travel, and I love stories. I hate to know there's so much of the world that is inaccessible to me because I don't understand certain languages!
What everyday magic would your characters wish they had and why?
I think Addie and Eva would have liked to have the ability to keep their loved ones safe. I'm not quite sure how magic like that would work, though!
Eight, Barrie’s love interest in Compulsion, has inherited his family’s gift of knowing what people want and feeling compelled to give it to them. What’s one gift you’re glad you don’t have? Or your characters would be glad they didn’t have?
Hmm... maybe the gift of drawing attention--always being the center of attention wherever you go? That sounds like something that might seem like a gift to some people, but wouldn't be great for me! I would hate it if I could never just chill in the background with my anonymity!
Barrie is tied to her family’s plantation, Watson’s Landing, in a magical way, and the whole landscape becomes magical for her. What’s the one place in your book that you wish you could bring to life?
Many of the most unique settings in my books are pretty awful, scary places! However, there's a boardwalk in Once We Were that is pretty awesome. :)
If you were going to a Halloween party and you had to dress as a character from a Southern Gothic or a Gothic romance, what would your costume look like?
I take all opportunities to dress up in ridiculous dresses ;)
* * *Leave it to an author like Kat to answer a question and leave room for the reader’s imagination!
Now your turn!  Tell us about your magic.
And/Or . . .
Bonus option: If you’ve already commented about your magic elsewhere on the tour or just want to do something different for extra entry points, show us your magical, gothic, or Southern gothic costume! How would you do a character with two souls like Eva and Addie in What’s Left of Me or a character from a gothic novel like Brenna Yovanoff’s Fiendish or a Southern Gothic romance like Gone with the Wind? How would you show an “everyday magic” as a Halloween costume? Post a comment with the URL to your photo and we’ll share it. Use tag #CompulsionMagic.

A Saturday Moment with Deitre

I know it's Sunday again. I can't really bring myself to change the title. I was thinking I might skip this week, because there weren't any huge bookish moments that really hit me.  However, here I type, before life takes me to a Sunday afternoon meeting at 4:00. This week's nights have been filled with so much reading. I have truly put myself in speed read mode! I can't do it as fast as Josh or Lydey with our reviewer coven, but when a book needs to be read, it needs to be read. Autumn Rose By Abigail Gibbs, finished. I can't wait to share the review with you on Tuesday. It will be a part of a book tour with MundieMoms.

I'm still working on some children's books from Candlewick Press and Forever by Emma Dodd is next in line to read. It is always nice to jump from Adult to YA to Children's. I had forgotten all about my love for children's books. So these have been a nice treat.  Check out  A Leisure Moment next week.  Yara is showcasing one of her childhood favorites on tomorrow.  You won't want to miss it!

Happy Reading,
Deitre
