Nerd Blast: The Shadow Cipher by Laura Ruby + Giveaway

The Shadow Cipher
York #1
Author: Laura Ruby
Reading Level: Middle Grade
Genre: Fantasy
Released: May 16th 2017
Publisher: Walden Pond Press

It was 1798 when the Morningstarr twins arrived in New York with a vision for a magnificent city: towering skyscrapers, dazzling machines, and winding train lines, all running on technology no one had ever seen before. Fifty-seven years later, the enigmatic architects disappeared, leaving behind for the people of New York the Old York Cipher—a puzzle laid into the shining city they constructed, at the end of which was promised a treasure beyond all imagining. By the present day, however, the puzzle has never been solved, and the greatest mystery of the modern world is little more than a tourist attraction.

Tess and Theo Biedermann and their friend Jaime Cruz live in a Morningstarr apartment house—until a real estate developer announces that the city has agreed to sell him the five remaining Morningstarr buildings. Their likely destruction means the end of a dream long-held by the people of New York. And if Tess, Theo and Jaime want to save their home, they have to prove that the Old York Cipher is real. Which means they have to solve it.

From National Book Award Finalist Laura Ruby comes a visionary epic set in a New York City at once familiar and wholly unexpected.

Screaming Divas

Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: May 18th 2014

At sixteen, Trudy Baxter is tired of her debutante mom, her deadbeat dad, and her standing reservation at the juvenile detention center. Changing her name to Trudy Sin, she cranks up her major chops as a singer and starts a band, gathering around other girls ill at ease in their own lives. Cassie Haywood, would-have-been beauty queen, was scarred in an accident in which her alcoholic mom was killed. But she can still sing and play her guitar, even though she seeks way too much relief from the pain in her body and her heart through drugs, and way too much relief from loneliness through casual sex. Still, it's Cassie who hears former child prodigy Harumi Yokoyama playing in a punk band at a party, and enlists her, outraging Harumi's overbearing first-generation Japanese parents. The fourth member is Esther Shealy, who joins as a drummer in order to be close to Cassie--the long-time object of her unrequited love--and Harumi, her estranged childhood friend. Together, they are Screaming Divas, and they're quickly swept up as a local sensation. Then, just as they are about to achieve their rock-girl dreams, a tragedy strikes.ough her feelings for the Wyatt brothers—and find her friend—before she loses them all?

One, two, one, two, three four! I figured I could start this review just like a band starts a show. Screaming Divas are four girls who get together to form an all-girl rock band. We follow the lives of Trudy, Harumi, Esther, and Cassie, all girls completely different but all find the passion in music with each other.

Screaming Diva’s focuses on all of the girl’s lives before the band and during, the girls together and girls separate. This may be a shorter book but you learn a lot about each one of them and are able to see them grow tremendously, good and bad in just a limited amount of pages.

When we first meet Trudy Baxter she’s already getting in trouble, getting arrested for shop lifting, her mother then sends her off to jail where she sits until her father whom she hasn’t seen in years picks her up. People seem to leave Trudy as soon as trouble ensues; they just give up on her when she truly needs them the most. Trudy moves out and decides to start a band, become someone.

Harumi Yokoyama is destined to become a violin prodigy until her audition for Julliard changes everything her family has mapped out for her. Harumi didn’t get in trouble, she didn’t date, and she didn’t do anything but practice and master her violin. But when people are under a constant cloud of pressure they can crack, and that just so happened with Harumi, she cracked at her audition, she didn’t want the path her parents have paved for her. Instead she picks up a bass and joins a band, paves her own path.

Then we meet Cassie Haywood, beautiful pageant child, Cassie. When we’re first introduced to Cassie she is covering a huge scar that runs down her face, a scar she got when her and her mother got into accident. Cassie’s mother found out her husband was cheating, she was already drinking, she took Cassie and left, the accident took her mother’s life and gave Cassie a scar on her face and her heart. While Cassie’s dad is busy with his new trophy wife Cassie stumbles upon a flyer to join an all-girl band.

And then lastly, but not any less important we’re introduced to Esther Shealy. The first thing we learn about Esther is that she harbors secret feelings for Cassie and she used to be good friends with Harumi. Esther spends a lot of time under the influence of others expectations that it takes her awhile to truly come out of her shell. Everyone around her truly taught her a lesson about herself.

I completely enjoyed the amount of time we got with each of the girls; they became each other’s crutches, and became true sisters. As expected though having girls around each other all the time there is guaranteed drama and Screaming Divas have their fair share of drama, as well as  love, hate, exploration and a kick ass time playing together.

If you love the true sisterhood type stories, Screaming Divas is for you. Rock and Roll has its ups and downs and you definitely get that with Trudy, Harumi, Cassie, and Esther. Being together changed them, being the Screaming Divas changed them.

Back in the day, Suzanne Kamata spent a lot of time hanging out in a club in Columbia, South Carolina, much like the one in Screaming Divas. (The beat goes on . . .) She later wrote about musicians for The State newspaper, The Japan Times, and other publications. Now, she mostly writes novels. In her free time, she enjoys searching for the perfect fake fur leopard-print coat and listening to the Japanese all-girl band Chatmonchy.

Dreamer

Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: June 7th 2014

Fifteen-year-old Rory Adair has a secret—dreams that foreshadow what is to come. Excited about finally meeting the hot, tall, blue-eyed guy from one of those dreams, she is shocked when he turns out to be identical twin brothers Bryce and Ryder Wyatt, both of whom take an instant interest in her and compete for her attention.

As Rory tries to use her secret ability to help her decide which brother to ask to the Sadie Hawkins Dance, the dreams start to change. Something bad is going to happen, but before she can figure out how to warn her friends without revealing her secret, her best friend Stacey goes missing.

Rory teams up with Bryce, who has a secret ability of his own. Together they use their abilities, intellect, and gut instinct to find the missing women. Can Rory sort through her feelings for the Wyatt brothers—and find her friend—before she loses them all?

I don’t know about you but sleeping is my favorite thing to do, you know besides reading. And when this book was available for a tour I was on that! The best part of sleeping is when your mind takes you on all these crazy adventures and you run into weird random people you haven’t seen in years, but in Dreamer our girl Rory has dreams that will eventually come true.

So we’ve out our main protagonist Rory who finds herself in an insane situation where she sees the future in her dreams, with no one to trust with this secret what will she do when she sees something potentially dangerous. We pick up when Rory is meeting a very dreamy man in her dreams, who just so happens to be a twin. When both boys pine after Rory that’s when I thought I would run, but heck these boys were dreamy and twins, they share chromosomes of course it’ll be hard to choose which one! But when Rory’s dreams start becoming frightening and girls are coming up missing she doesn’t know what to do and who to trust, but she’s has to put her twin dilemma on hold.

You know what the best part of this book was? The dreams! It was like a preview into the future of the book and obviously her life and what is going to follow. And as much as I enjoyed the boys in this book, I really loved when Rory was using her dreams to help investigate the kidnappings.
I would definitely recommend this book to the mystery lovers out there; this YA book was fun and refreshing.

Blog Tour: Pandemic | Yvonne Ventresca | Review | Interview | Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on PANDEMIC tour for Yvonne Ventresca. This tour is hosted by YA Bound Book Tours. Today we share our ___ star review and much more.

Pandemic
Author: Yvonne Ventresca
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Science Science Fiction | Apocalyptic
Released: May 6th 2014
Review Source: Blog Tour | Sky Pony Press

Even under the most normal circumstances, high school can be a painful and confusing time. Unfortunately, Lilianna's circumstances are anything but normal. Only a few people know what caused her sudden change from model student to the withdrawn pessimist she has become, but her situation isn't about to get any better. When people begin coming down with a quick-spreading illness that doctors are unable to treat, Lil's worst fears are realized. With her parents called away on business before the contagious outbreak-her father in Delaware covering the early stages of the disease and her mother in Hong Kong and unable to get a flight back to New Jersey-Lil's town is hit by what soon becomes a widespread illness and fatal disaster. Now, she's more alone than she's been since the "incident" at her school months ago.

With friends and neighbors dying all around her, Lil does everything she can just to survive. But as the disease rages on, so does an unexpected tension as Lil is torn between an old ex and a new romantic interest. Just when it all seems too much, the cause of her original trauma shows up at her door. In this thrilling debut from author Yvonne Ventresca, Lil must find a way to survive not only the outbreak and its real-life consequences, but also her own personal demons.

Pandemic puts a new spin on stories of outbreak and social break down. We almost always are lead by an adult point of view in a story where some big government entity sweeps in and rescues the population. Pandemic is told from a completely different angle. What if you are a child who is suddenly faced with the end of life as you know it- and you have to face it alone?

For our main character, Lil, this becomes her reality. Lilianna is not your typical high school student. She has been through a life changing event that has turned her inward, sparked compulsions like secretly hoarding food and supplies and distanced her from friends, even her ex-boyfriend can't seem to get through to her.
Lil lives with her mom who leaves the country early in the story, to another country for a work related trip. Her dad works for a magazine that specializes in infectious diseases of all things, following his work just adds to her anxiety.

Then things start to happen, slow at first and then rapidly.

People are getting sick, people are dying, public places are no longer safe and looters are targeting homes for supplies.

Lil's worse fears are realized when the disease hits her hometown. She must join forces with a few friends and some not-so-friendly classmates to survive.

This story made me sad, nervous, anxious and proud all at the same time. It made me wonder what would happen if my kids had to survive something like this.
 This could be our story.

Would we know the moment it started?

Pandemic brings to life our worst fears, calls us out on regrets and reminds us that sometimes the strong fall short and the most unexpected person will be the one we count on in the worst of times.
Pandemic is so very well written, it is eye opening. I would recommend it to all of my fellow readers.

1. Can you tell us a little about your background?

I studied creative writing (along with computer science) in college but it wasn’t until several years after I graduated that I decided to focus on writing seriously. My first paid writing project was to create video scripts instructing other how to use technology. Later, I wrote a series of profiles for teens about various careers. This led to my first published nonfiction book, Publishing (Careers for the 21st Century), followed by a biography of the singer Avril Lavigne. Getting a novel published took me much longer, and Pandemic, my fiction debut, was actually my fourth attempt at writing a young adult novel.

2. What were you like in school? Were you the model student or withdrawn?

I was a geeky kid who loved to read. I got good grades, so I guess I’d fall into the “model student” category.

3. Do you have any interesting rituals or quirks that you must do when you sit down to write?

I don’t have many quirks on a day-to-day basis other than a hot cup of tea or coffee when writing. But when I’m starting a major project, like a new novel, I have this cleaning ritual I go through. I clean all the closets, drawers, cabinets, and especially my office files. I think it’s a way of making space (literally and figuratively) for the next creative idea.

4. Do you write full-time?

I’m a mom to two teens so I write around their schedules. I tend to write in spurts, but the past few months I’ve been focusing more on promotion than writing new material. I track my time so I know at the end of each week if I’m slacking off.

5. What advice would you give to first time writers about the writing process?

Author Richard Bach said, “A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.” Persistence is definitely key in this business. Good writing is certainly important, but there’s something to be said for not giving up. As I mentioned above, Pandemic, my debut YA novel, was actually the fourth one I’d written, and I received many rejections along the way to publication. I read somewhere that the novel The Help was rejected sixty times. It achieved commercial success (with a movie, no less!) so it makes you wonder – what if Kathryn Stockett hadn’t sent that 61st letter? It’s important to keep trying.

Before becoming a children’s writer, Yvonne Ventresca wrote computer programs and taught others how to use technology. Now she happily spends her days writing stories instead of code and sharing tips with other writers. Yvonne is the author of the young adult novel Pandemic, available in May 2014 from Sky Pony Press.

Yvonne grew up in Levittown, New York, where the suburban homes were famously identical in design and the streets were named in sections (birds, astronomy-related, random occupations). Her quest for publication began in middle school (sort of) when she asked the librarian for information on how to physically create a book. Writing was fun, but how do you actually get those words into bound pages? The small library didn’t have any materials about that, and it would be many years before Yvonne achieved the goal of writing a published book.

Yvonne majored in English and Computer Science – an unusual combination, but when she was stuck on a literature assignment she could debug her programs, and when that got boring she could write an essay. That strategy worked well and she graduated with honors from Hofstra University, followed by her MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business. Her post-college life was divided into two phases: life in the corporate world (where she worked as a computer programmer, technology trainer, recruiter, and compensation analyst) and later, life as a writer.

She definitely prefers phase two. During her writing career, Yvonne has written instructional video scripts about technology, numerous articles for children and adults, a nonfiction book for teens about careers in publishing, and a biography for teens about the singer Avril Lavigne. But her real love is fiction, and after several attempts at writing a novel, she created a story about a contemporary bird flu pandemic.

Yvonne Ventresca currently resides with her husband and two teenage children in New Jersey.
