Book Review: When It's Real by Erin Watt

WHEN IT'S REAL
Author: Erin Watt
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Released: May 30, 2017
Review Source: Harlequin Teen

From #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Erin Watt comes the addictive contemporary tale of a teen rock star in need of an image makeover and the teen girl hired to be his fake girlfriend.

Meet Oakley Ford-teen celebrity, renowned pop star, child of famous movie stars, hottie with millions of fangirls… and restless troublemaker. On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley's team decides it's time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he's settled down.

Enter seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett-devoted sister, part-time waitress, the definition of "normal." Under ordinary circumstances she'd never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn't have much of a choice. And for the money Oakley's team is paying her, she figures she can put up with outlandish Hollywood parties and a team of publicists watching her every move. So what if she thinks Oakley's a shallow, self-centered jerk? It's not like they're going to fall for each other in real life…right?

When I heard that a top favorite duo was coming out with a new book, the first thing I did was immediately add it to my good reads TBR MUST READ list.  Then the cover was revealed and OMG, I absolutely love it. It is simply stunning.  I did not read the blurb or anything else because I wanted to go into the story completely blind.  Erin Watt.  Never.  Disappoints.

Due to the fact I went into this book completely blind, I had no idea what to expect other than I knew it would be an awesome read because HELLLLLLO ERIN WATT wrote it.  It was nothing like what I expected, which is a great thing.  I love being continuously surprised by an author.  The book is about Oakley, aka Oak, Ford which had a pretty successful career as a teen star.  However, now that he's more older, he wanted to change his tune and produce something a little more mature/serious.  He is advised to date an average girl and so that's exactly what he does.  Vaughn, said average girl, is kind of in a hard spot financially so even though she wouldn't normally go for the famous type, she decides to jump on the option to date Oak when given the chance.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it wasn't as angsty as the previous books I've read by Erin Watt but I did like how fun and sweet this story was.  I wanted to smack the crap out of Oakley in the beginning but he really grew on me the more I read the book.  Vaughn tried my patience a few times also but I like her character as well.  I felt the story was written really well and the character development was on point.  I LOVE the deep connection that develops between Oakley and Vaughn.

I'm rating this story 4 stars because I really loved the book and it was a quick, fun read.  Erin Watt is a duo that I would one click anytime they write a book.  I am seriously obsessed.

Save me and I'll save you... My name is Calla Price. I’m eighteen years old, and I’m one half of a whole. My other half-- my twin brother, my Finn-- is crazy. I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me. I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline. Dare DuBray. He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me. He has the power to destroy me. Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt. Why? Because of a secret. A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming. You won’t either.

I finished this book the evening of Thanksgiving, I took a quick break to process everything and then immediately got on my laptop and starting typing. 5 Trees do not come easy from me, but this my dear reader friends, is 5 stars hands down. I’m going to say this quickly and get it out of the way. There are some grammatical issues sprinkled throughout and originally it was going to be 4 Trees. But the ending, pushed it to the top. This is one of those books that you really need to stay free from lengthy reviews, posts, goodreads comments etc. Just take my advice and read for yourself.

I can thank social media for bringing this book to my attention. I noticed a lot of talk about a book being taken down from Amazon for review. The support from Courtney Cole’s fans pushed me to want to know more about this book that everyone was talking about. So as soon as it was back up for purchase, I grabbed my copy and read it in two days.

Let’s see, how can I explain the greatness of this book? The author warns you in the beginning, of the darkness embedded in this read, however, don’t be alarm, your provided support as well in the end (and believe me it’s greatly needed). The major characters of this novel, is Calla, Finn, and Dare. 3 characters with deep secrets. Too deep to share with one another. As twins, Calla and Finn live a life as one, with Dare as an additional link capturing Calla’s heart. This story is beautifully written. A dark story, beautifully written? Yes! Courtney has crafted events that are original, like none I’ve read before. So it’s the originality, descriptions, and attention to detail that had my head stuck in a Kindle nonstop, until the very end!

But he knows she lied and all he wants is a chance to prove that they could have something real, but it’s hard pining away for a girl who’s been avoiding him for the past year and a half.

Incoming freshman Stella Freeman is excited about going to college for photography—her true passion. She’s never more herself than when she is behind the camera. Regardless of her father’s constant backlash, she follows her heart to the city where Theo is currently living. He’s the only boy she’s ever loved, but she's pushed him away. Still, he’s never been far from her thoughts, even if he doesn’t know.

What will happen when their paths cross? Will they have a second chance to be with their one first true love?

“Wait,” I shouted. I searched for the right words. All I came up with was, “Why did you take so many pictures of me? Do you like me?” My face heated. I sounded like a dorky ten-year old boy on the playground at recess. I plowed ahead anyway. “Did the kiss mean as much to you as it did to me?”

There was only one way to find out. I took a step forward and touched my lips to hers. Her lips were warm and soft. I thought she’d slap me and tell me to get the fuck away from her, but she didn’t. She closed her eyes and sank into the kiss, kissing me back. I teased her lips open with my tongue. She responded and our tongues swirled around each other. The last kiss I shared with Stella was just a small preview. This was downright epic. I felt things I’d never felt before.

I moved my lips down her pale throat and kissed her softly. She reached up and wrapped her arms around my neck. I pulled her closer until our chests were smashed against each other’s, and I wondered if she could feel my heart beating. It pounded hard and loud. A soft sigh escaped her lips and I knew this wasn’t one-sided. She felt things too. I returned my attention to her mouth, biting her bottom lip, losing myself in the taste of her sweet lips. It was like being pulled under by a giant wave in a hurricane and then not knowing which way was up or down. I realized I didn’t know and I didn’t care. I never wanted to resurface. I was right where I wanted to be. Lost in a sea of emotions and passion with Stella at the center of the storm. I cupped the back of her head, deepening the kiss even further.

Suddenly she pulled away and I couldn’t breathe. I felt like a fish out of water. I wanted to reach for her and pull her back to me because nothing in my entire life had felt so right, but the look on her face told me not to. “What was that?” She narrowed her eyes at me.

“We were kissing.” She had moaned my name at one point and pressed her hot body against mine. There was no way in hell she hadn’t been enjoying it. “And you liked it.” “No, Theo.” She called me Theo again. I was beginning to hate my own name. “I can’t do this with you.”

“I know you felt that too,” I argued. I didn’t understand why she was pretending she hadn’t been affected. She’d kissed me back. It had been honest and true.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I didn’t feel anything.” It was the same words she’d said last time after we kissed, only this time I knew she was lying. Her voice was shaky. Her body still trembled with aftershocks. I just didn’t understand why she’d lie. I stood on her porch for several minutes after she went inside, trying to figure out how I was going to get Stella to forgive me and recognize what we could have if she’d give me a chance.

Interview:
1- What genre is your book?

“Never Far Away” is my first crack at writing a New Adult/Contemporary Romance novel. My resume includes 3 YA novels, and I was ready to branch out and expand my style and audience.

2- What inspired you to write this novel?

A real life event inspired this novel. I took a real situation—two neighbors fighting over seats on the back of the bus in elementary school, never really agreeing on anything, and placed these two antagonist characters years down the road. What happens? How are they different? The same? They share history, but can they share a future?

3- What book are you reading now?

Currently I am reading short stories in Spanish and meeting with a great group of ladies once a month to discuss them. Hablamos en español todo el tiempo y me encanta.

4- If you could have breakfast with anyone past or present who would you choose, and why?

I would choose my mother. She died when I was in my early twenties and so much has happened in my life since then that I’d love to share with her—I finished college, got my first job, got married, and had kids. I’d love to see the look on her face when I told her I’m a writer too. I’ll never forget the day back in high school when she drove me to school and I suddenly remembered I had written an essay on a whim for a contest and it was due that day—typed. (This was before computers were in every household). My mom sighed and took the essay to work and typed it for me and dropped it off at school, and I won. She was proud of me then and I’m sure she’d be proud of me know. After breakfast I’d like to have her show me how to make an apple pie with her homemade crust because that’s something I miss.

5- What’s your favorite dessert?

My mom’s homemade apple pie, of course.

6- How would you describe yourself in three words?

 Creative, Happy, and Kind.

Marysue G Hobika grew up in Caledonia, NY and attended SUNY at Buffalo where she studied to be a Spanish teacher.  Currently she lives in Pittsford, NY with her husband, three children, and her two pugs.

She has learned that stories don’t write themselves and tries to make time every day to sit down and write. She does her best thinking while in the shower, driving her kids around, or right before she falls asleep. She keeps a moleskin notebook handy that a dear friend gave her as a gift, so that if an idea occurs she can write it down.

She doesn’t know where this journey will take her, but she has a lot of characters and stories floating around inside her head waiting to be brought to life.

Book Review: Learning Not to Drown by Anna Shinoda

Learning Not to Drown
Author: Anna Shinoda
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Released: April 1st 2014
Review Source: Atheneum Books for Young Readers

Family secrets cut to the bone in this mesmerizing debut novel about a teen whose drug-addicted brother is the prodigal son one time too many.

There is a pecking order to every family. Seventeen-year old Clare is the overprotected baby; Peter is the typical, rebellious middle child; and Luke is the oldest, the can’t-do-wrong favorite. To their mother, they are a normal, happy family.

To Clare, they are a family on the verge of disaster. Clare: the ambitious striver; Peter: the angry ticking time bomb; and Luke: a drug-addicted convicted felon who has been in and out of jail for as long as Clare can remember—and who has always been bailed out by their parents.

Clare loves Luke, but life as his sister hasn’t been easy. And when he comes home (again), she wants to believe this time will be different (again). Yet when the truths behind his arrests begin to surface, everything Clare knows is shaken to its core. And then Luke is arrested. Again.

Except this time is different, because Clare’s mom does the unthinkable on Luke’s behalf, and Clare has to decide whether turning her back on family is a selfish act…or the only way to keep from drowning along with them.

Debut novelist Anna Shinoda's raw, gritty, powerful novel cuts right to the bone and brings to life the skeletons the lurk in the closet.

After finishing Learning Not to Drown, the first thing I said was ‘Thank God!’ For the most part while reading this book, I spent time saying &%!*%$@ Why, you may asked? Claire’s mother is a lunatic!! I seriously wanted to smack her in the head! This woman needs to go to jail!

Claire’s life sucks and the title “Learning Not to Drown” is very fitting to her life. All her life she has been lied to. Once the family’s skeletons come out of the closet, Claire is beginning to see the truth. And the one person she adored the most is the most heartless and conniving person.

How can this girl life go on? No one seems to understand what she is going through. Everyone in town keeps their distance away from her and her family... for good reasons. And her mother is cynical. All she cares is her Claire’s brother. The black sheep of the family and once Claire learns the truth about. When Claire tries to move on with her life without him, trying not to drown with all the skeletons, her mother begins to give her the cold shoulder.

Learning Not to Drown is told in Claire’s point of view but the chapters’ switches from now and then, so you have to keep up with the past. As the story goes, you will see that Claire is as innocence as a two year old but is changed when she realizes her family is not what she thought of. As the skeletons reveals, she tries to make up her family’s mistakes to the town.

This story is dark and bit of disturbing, which is not for everyone. But if you’re into these type of stories, like myself, then don’t forget to add Learning Not to Drown! It will leave you wishing fair for life.

*Warning: Contains mature content that may not be suitable for younger audiences*

Every time someone would ask me, “What is your saddest book you’ve ever read,” I would automatically answer, A Child Called It. I read this book when I was a freshman in high school and this book has forever stayed in my heart. Now, after reading Every Shattered Thing, I know I would mention both books whenever I am asked this question. Every Shattered Thing is extremely sad. And if you know by now, I am a sucker for sad stories.

Every Shattered Thing is not only a sad story but an eye opening. It is so disgusting to know that people with power can simply look the other way whenever one is need. You would expect these role models to help out their students but unfortunately, some are afraid to get involve, not knowing this can save many lives.

Stephanie is a high school student who is trapped in a life that no one would dare imagine. Her own father, a sick bastard, has not only has he beaten her since she was twelve, but has put her up for prostitution. This man is sick! OMG I hate him!

Poor Stephanie, with the very little people in her world to help her out, she tried hard to gain hope. But in her situation, this is very hard to hold on to. What got me all worked up is that many of her teachers used to see the bruises, but they would look away, afraid to get involve. I just couldn’t deal with this. I was frustrated to know that this happens in real life. How can someone so little deal with this alone? Knowing and hoping that someone with power would help them.

Every Shattered Thing deals with abuse and sexual assault, so please, this is a tough subject but it is not suitable for young audience. Nonetheless, this was an outstanding read. Elora has written this book in Stephanie’s point of view, so her pain becomes yours. You will be left shattered after finishing this book. And it is sad to know that you will have to wait for the next book to know the outcome of Stephanie’s happiness.
