Blog Tour: The Replaced by Kimberly Derting | Playlist + Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on The Replaced tour for Kimberly Derting. This tour is hosted by Me, My Shelf, and I.

The Replaced
Author: Kimberly Derting
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Sci-Fi
Released: April 28, 2015
Review Source: Harper Teen

Romantic and action-packed, The Replaced is the gripping second installment in the Taking trilogy.

Kyra hasn't been the same since she returned from her mysterious five-year disappearance. Now, on the run from the NSA, Kyra is forced to hide out with others who, like her, have been Returned. Yet she is determined to find Tyler, the boy she loves who was also abducted—all because of her. When her group intercepts a message that Tyler might still be alive but is in the hands of a shadowy government organization that experiments on the Returned, Kyra knows it's a risk to go after him. What if it's a trap? And worse, what if the returned Tyler isn't the same boy she lost?

Perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and the Body Finder series, The Replaced is both chilling and explosive, with creepy, otherworldly elements and twisty, psychological thrills that will have you questioning what exactly it means to be human.

Let me show you something super cool! A music playlist I put together that has songs that remind me either of Kyra, certain scenes in The Replaced, or Tyler (or Kyra and Tyler!) I had fun picking out songs. Please excuse the fact that Imagine Dragons is in here quite a bit. They are my favorite band and I just feel like they fit so perfectly well with this series!

What songs would you add?

Kimberly Derting is the author of the award winning THE BODY FINDER series, THE PLEDGE trilogy, and THE TAKING and THE REPLACED (the first two books in The Taking trilogy).

Her books have been translated into 15 languages, and both THE BODY FINDER and THE PLEDGE were YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults selections.

She lives in the Pacific Northwest, where the gloomy weather is ideal for writing anything dark and creepy. Her three beautiful (and often mouthy) children serve as an endless source of inspiration and frequently find things they say buried in the pages of their mother's books, or on Twitter for the world to see.

Perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and the Body Finder series, The Replaced is both chilling and explosive, with creepy, otherworldly elements and twisty, psychological thrills that will have you questioning what exactly it means to be human.

The Replaced picks up right where The Taking left off. Strange and unexplainable things have happened to Kyra. She disappeared one night in high school and then five years later reappeared. Looking exactly the same, but doing things no "normal" human could do. The crazy ride that The Taking took us through introduced us to Tyler, Kyra's love interest whom she had to take a MAJOR risk on. She had to let him get "taken" too. Now she's on the scariest chase imaginable, searching for Tyler and hoping he's out there being the same boy she fell for. Will she find him? If so, will he be the same? What's at stake? How much danger is she putting herself through?

I had to wait what felt like an eternity to finally read The Replaced after indulging in The Taking (which btw was definitely one of my top reads last year!) I was worried The Replaced would suffer from the opinion that most second books fall short. THANK YOU KIMBERLY DERTING FOR NOT DISAPPOINTING YET AGAIN! It is safe to say I am alien obsessed. If there is anything dealing with aliens my grabby hands come out real quick. Which also goes to say that it makes me critique alien books harder. But I am "completely and irrevocably in love" with this thrilling series.

Reading The Replaced now makes The Taking seem like a warm up. You pick this book up and you run. I don't think I've ever read a book where so much action started happening so soon. Boy, was it good! I was holding my breath the entire time. #dead LOL. Apart from all the action happening, it's still a roller coaster ride of emotions. You assume one thing will happen and it doesn't- repeat times forever. My heart strings we tugged and pulled leaving it sore until I can get my hands on the next installment.

I won't give away too many spoilers but I will say these few things:
- Kyra is such a great and strong character! She's still discovering who she is now and what her abilities are but her head and heart stay grounded. She's a tough cookie and I love her!
- Tyler will always have my heart. #TeamTyler for sure! With that said, it's safe to assume there is a possible "love triangle" aspect being brought in. While most readers find love triangles overdone, I feel like I haven't had one in a long time and it's great to be stuck in this "team so and so" thing again. It's executed so well you will not be frustrated with it!
- This plot is EVERYTHING.

Lastly, I want to say CAN THIS YEAR GO BY FASTER PLEASE? (Sorry for the passionate shouty caps!) I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Kimberly Derting you are a sic-fi rockstar! Yet again I find myself anxiously awaiting the next installment in The Taking series so I can dive right back into this amazing world.

P.S.: Here's my review for The Taking :) And, don't forget to enter the giveaway for a chance to win an ARC copy of The Replaced! Then you have no excuse but to come fangirl with me...

Book Review: The Taking by Kimberly Derting

The Taking
The Taking #1
Author: Kimberly Derting
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Science Fiction
Released: April 29, 2014
Review Source: Harper Teen

A flash of white light . . . and then . . . nothing.

When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas ’n’ Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn’t aged a day.

Everything else about Kyra’s old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.

Confused and lost, Kyra isn’t sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin’s annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to. As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra’s father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?

Imagine waking up and realizing five years have passed. Everything around you is different, but you're still the same. Same age, you've got the same bruises in the same spots. Everyone is telling you five years have passed, but why haven't you aged? That is what happens to Kyra in The Taking. She was gone for five whole years. Life went on, people moved on. So, when she returns it all seems so bizarre to everyone, especially her. Her mom now has a new husband and baby. Her dad has gone off the rails, according to everyone. Her boyfriend, Austin, is off in college. In steps Tyler, Austin's brother, to help Kyra feel less scared. And then things get weirder. With Tyler at her side, she decides she has to figure out what exactly happened to her five years ago and why she hasn't aged.

To say that I loved The Taking is putting it lightly. I more than loved The Taking. Granted, I'm a sucker for anything sci-fi/alien related. Still, Derting wrote an amazing story that is unlike anything else out there. Someone was actually taken, or abducted AND returned! That alone should get you to pick up the book. But, if you need another reason; Tyler *swoons*. Oh my sweet heart, Tyler. Honestly, he's what had me glued to the book. Don't get me wrong, Kyra was a great character. Strong, smart, and relate able in a sense that her reactions to the situation are reactions anyone would have. Tyler, though was the most charming character I've read in some time and perfect in every angle. If one word could describe Tyler that word would be adorable. I seriously "aww'd" and sighed so much during his scenes.

All in all The Taking is a fantastic read that I would highly recommend. Kimberly Derting is a sci-fi rockstar! Please go pick up a copy and fangirl with me!

PS. Dying of anticipation for the next installment in The Taking! I need more of this world!
