Original Sin: After the End

Frannie

Gabe is propped on my doorframe, looking anything but calm. “You ready?”

“I guess.” I take a last survey of my room, then glance at Luc, standing vigil at my window. He hasn’t said a word since Angelique. I have to know what happened, but I can’t bring myself to ask again. I hesitate a second longer before asking instead, “You coming?”

My heart pounds, but it holds its breath as he turns from the window and locks me in his dark gaze.

Long pause…

“And, cut!”

The director’s voice is sharp, final. He stares at his screen for a minute then looks up at us and waves. “Got it! That’s a wrap!”

The grip moves around the room turning off the set lights one by one.

Gabe lays a hand on my shoulder. “So, I guess that’s it. You want to go get something to eat?”

“Sure,” I say then look a Luc. “You coming?”

He drops his hand from the window frame and grins. “Didn’t you just ask me that?”

“Shut up.” I throw a disgusted look at him and shove Gabe out of the way, pushing out into the hall. “Let’s go. I’m staring.”

Mom lifts her eyes from her crossword as we pass through the family room on our way to the door. “Where you kids headed?”

“Dunno. Maybe Ricco’s,” I answer, stepping aside as the grip clods down the stairs behind us, buried in set lights.

“Need a hand?” Gabe asks.

“Got it. Thanks,” he says. He hikes them on his shoulder, then stops at the door. “Well, maybe if one of you could…” He tips his head toward the door and a light pole slips off his shoulder, crashing to the ground. He stares at it for a second then looks up at us. “Never mind,” he says holding up his now free hand. “Got it.”

He opens the door, gathers everything up, and slips through into the cool night.

“Did you wrap up the shoot?” Dad asks, tearing himself away from the Red Sox game.

I nod. “Yeah. Nothing now until Last Rite starts. But that won’t be until May.”

“Thank goodness,” Mom says, going back to her puzzle. “It will be so nice to have the house back.”

As if to prove her point, there’s a crash from upstairs.

Mom’s eyes roll up to the ceiling and she sighs.

I feel a cringe pinch my face. “Sorry.”

“Just go,” Dad says with a smile and a wave of his hand. “Have fun.”

“’Kay.”

Gabe opens the door and we head for his Charger in the driveway. The grip is struggling to get everything loaded in the van. “You’re sure you don’t need help?” Gabe calls.

The grip sticks a hand in the air but doesn’t turn around. “I’m good.”

I pull open the car door. “Hey, Luc. Text Lili and Matt and see if they’re up for pizza.”

He slips his phone from his pocket and smiles sideways at me. “You’re wish, my command.”

I feel heat creep up my face and I’m glad for the cover of darkness. I breathe deep, and when I turn to Gabe, he’s glaring laser beams at Luc.

“Turn it off, demon boy,” he says through clenched teeth.

Luc lifts an eyebrow at Gabe then takes my hand and helps me into the car. Which I totally didn’t need, but… He holds my hand for a long second after I’m in, and I almost think he’s going to kiss the back of it or something, making me blush deeper. But then he lets go, slides into the seat, and pulls the door shut.

I pretty much stare at him the whole way to Ricco’s and when we get there, Matt and Lili are at a table in the back. Ricco wipes his hands on his stained chef’s tunic and scowls at me as we pass by the register. “No discounts.”

I look at him. “Ricco, the shoot’s over.” I gesture behind us with a tip of my head. “No cameras, see?”

“Ah!” he says with a grin, throwing his arms wide. “Sorry! Guess I got a little carried away.” He gives Luc a clap on the back. “Whatever you want’s on the house.”

I smile back. “Thanks, Ricco.”

We slide into seats at Matt and Lili’s table. Matt fist bumps Luc and Gabe. “Hey,” he says. “Did I just hear you score us free pizza?”

I nod. “Ricco’s pretty cool.”

“Sweet!”

Lili leans into Matt and he loops an arm around her shoulder. “How’d the rest of the shoot go?” she asks.

“Great,” I say. “We’re done till Last Rite.”

Matt grins. “That was a pretty wild ride. What do you think Last Rite is gonna be?”

Luc presses his foot into the table, tipping his chair onto the back legs. He folds his arms over his chest and his smile is totally wicked. “Wilder. I’ve seen the script.”
