Summary: (from goodreads) Falling in Love, baking a magical cake, fighting an evil necromancer—it’s all in a day’s work for Audrey Oliver, seventeen-year-old witch-in-training. When her mother goes missing and her twenty-one-year-old witchy cousin shows up out of the blue, Audrey knows something’s gone horribly, dangerously wrong. Now it’s up to her to get her own magical powers up to speed before everyone she loves is destroyed by the sorcerer intricately connected to her mother’s secret past.

Finding out you have magical powers can be stressful for any teen. Add to that the stress of keeping this secret from those closest to you, finding your soul mate and having a necromancer out to destroy your family and yeah you have Audrey’s Guide to Witchcraft.

Audrey’s life is a mundane as could be, that is until her mother disappears to help her family which neither Audrey or her sister Meg have ever heard of. Their only link to what is really going on is when their mysterious “cousin” Sadie shows up to watch over them while their mother is away.

It is with Sadie’s help that Audrey discovers the truth about her mothers family and the magical clan she left behind. Audrey’s power start to manifest themselves and Sadie takes it upon herself to teach her the ways of their clan. Audrey’s main objective is to get strong enough as fast as possible to help her mother defeat the dark powers of a necromancer.

As Audrey begins her magical path she also stumbles upon her soul mate. Her relationship with Julian is complicated and rocky at best. She tries to be honest with him but as her powers progress she has no choice but to keep her secrets and keep Julian in the dark. Julian knows that there is more to Audrey than your normal girl so he accepts her secrecy in order for their relationship and their love to survive.

Jody Gehrman, creates a world that is not only magical but also completely realistic. Audrey’s feelings are palpable and the intensity of the situations she is put through come right off the page. The twist that the story takes from time to time especially when dealing with her relationship with Julian are enough to make you scream out, “I CANT BELIEVE SHE DID THAT”, or “OH NO!!” Which I did from time to time!

It is a great read and an amazing first book for this series. I can’t wait to read more about Audrey and from Jody Gehrman.

  1. When I first saw the cover for this book I got curious because it's so pretty and the story is about witches. Thanks for sating my curiosity, I think I'll stick to reading the reviews, I don't think this is for me.
