Top Ten Best or Worse Beginnings or Endings in Books!

  • Best Ending: Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer - Who didn't love the ending when Edward was finally able to go inside Bella's head and see everything. Plus the last word written in the book is perfect - perfect piece of Forever.
  • Best Ending: If I Stay by Gayle Forman - The plea from Adam at the end just grabs your heart and doesn't let it go - I'll let you go. If you stay.
  • Best Ending: Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout - The ending crushes you but it was epic and to see Daemon promise that he will come back for Katy, UGH, just Epic!
  • Best Ending but also Worst Ending: Stealing Harper by Molly McAdams - Yes I know, what is up with choosing best and worst for this one. Well the ending was expected since this book was the story told in Chase's POV following Taking Chances in Harper's POV. So we knew what was coming but doesn't mean I could handle it again but even knowing that Molly executed the ending that she was the first author and book to make me cry ugly tears ever. LOVE THIS STORY even though what happens sucks royally!
  • Best Ending: Lover at Last by J. R. Ward - it was a long time coming but Qhuinn and Blay finally get their happy ever after and what en ending with a proposal and a dance to “Don’t Stop Believing” in front of everyone. KUDOS!!!
  • Best Ending: Divergent by Veronica Roth - You can feel the loss when you read the ending and what Tris feels. It hits your inner-core. "I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris, the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than either." - Cant wait to see Divergent on the big screen, I love this serious HARD!!!

  • Best Beginning: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi - I listen to the audio of Shatter Me and to listen to Julia say detail by detail how long she has been isolated was awesome.
  • Best Beginning: Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton - When a book starts off with RUN, that's exactly what you end up doing with the pages, you end up devouring the pages of this book. So intense and something that had not been written before.

  • Worst Ending: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - The ending was so anti-climatic after being such a powerful story. It felt rushed and boring. Plus she didn't end up with who I wanted, lol. I wonder how they will act this ending out in the movie version.
  • Worst Ending: Requiem by Lauren Oliver - Once again a case of the rushed ending and leaving a million things unresolved and it was upsetting after reading such an exciting dystopian story. I thought my book was broken and missing pages.

  1. OMG I was so disappointed with the ending to both Mockingjay and Requiem as well! Although Katniss did end up with who I wanted her to, it felt like she didn't end up with him in the way she should have. It was more like "he's here, the other isn't so I guess I'll just be with who's here". So upsetting.

  2. I've not read many of these, apart from Breaking Dawn ad Mockingjay. I really didn't like any of Breaking Dawn, so I won't say much about that. Mockinjay is a tough one, when I first read the ending I was disappointed and annoyed. I've not come to terms with it, and think it fits the rest of the book and the really dark premise quite well.

Here's my list. I've gone mostly for opening lines.

  3. I'm with you on the end of Requiem. I totally felt let down. (but I liked how Mockinjay ended) :) I like the quote from the end of Divergent. I'm curious to see that movie, too.

  4. The ending to Insurgent left me with my jaw on the floor! I need it to be October! I agree that Mockingjay was a disappointing ending. So sad. I loved Where She Went even more than If I Stay, probably because there is so much of Adam. Thanks for sharing! ~Megan

  5. Totally agree about If I Stay, it made my list too. And Love that you included that ending scene from breaking Dawn, because it is true -- love that Edward was in Bella's head.

I've not read Stealing Harper, but the one before that. And it gutted me -- I was so mad. haha :)

  6. Shatter Me definitely has one of the best beginnings ever. It catches your attention immediately and makes you question Juliette's sanity.
Great list you have there! :D

  7. I fully agree with Stealing Harper being both a best and worst ending. It crushed my heart and I didn't want it to end like that but it was done so beautifully.
