Author Feature: Heather Lyons | Interview | Fate Series

Today we are excited to feature one of OUaT's favorite authors. She is the mastermind behind the Fate Series that include A Matter of Fate and A Matter of Heart. The author behind the novels is:

Heather Lyons

Author Bio:
Heather Lyons has always had a thing for words—She’s been writing stories since she was a kid. In addition to writing, she’s also been an archaeologist and a teacher. Heather is a rabid music fan, as evidenced by her (mostly) music-centric blog, and she’s married to an even larger music snob. They’re happily raising three kids who are mini music fiends who love to read and be read to.

Interview with Heather Lyons

OUaT: Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? If not what did you plan on doing instead of writing?

While I’ve always loved writing (I was even the president of my writer’s group in high school!), I’d wanted to be an archaeologist since I was in elementary school. I worked in the field, surveying and excavating, in both the states and England, plus worked for a museum for a while. But that’s a truly tough field to stay in, so from there, I went into teaching before becoming a stay-at-home mom. Once I was home full-time, I decided to give my first love a try again!

OUaT: Who is your favorite twin?

Ooh, this is like picking a favorite child. Here’s the honest truth—I think it depends on which book (and specifically chapter) that I’m working on. I love both Jonah and Kellan for very different reasons.

OUaT: Would you prefer to have your destiny mapped out or you be the navigator of your own destiny?

Most definitely the latter of these two. I firmly believe that life is what we make of it, and this is the lesson that Chloe is working toward, too.

OUaT: What would you choose as your craft?

This is another tough one! Hmm . . . honestly, I think I’d like to be an Intellectual. I loved being a teacher, so I’d be completely down with inspiring others to learn.

OUaT: At 17 Chloe's life is extremely complicated. When you were 17, what were you doing that could be considered complicated?

Oh, gosh. My life was nowhere near as complicated as Chloe’s, but when I was 17 and in the middle of my junior year in high school, my parents moved us to another state. Leaving behind all of my friends, the only home I’d ever known, my tennis team, my grandparents . . . the experience really rocked me. It was incredibly hard to go from a big high school in Southern California to a tiny one in Oregon. Talk about culture shock!

OUaT: Do you believe in fate?

Yes and no—probably mostly no, as I truly do believe that our lives are what we make them. But I often think certain things are supposed to happen to us at certain times, too. I’m contrary like that. Ha!

OUaT: When writing or coming up with the Fate series, do you always know it would be New Adult?

I absolutely knew that the series would start with Young Adult and head straight into New Adult since it follows Chloe from 17 to her early-to-mid twenties. Just as with real life, her experiences and the story evolve and mature just as she does over the years.

OUaT: Did you listen to any music during the writing that influenced you or helped?

Hi, my name is Heather, and I am addicted to music. Haha! In all honesty, I can’t write without music. The playlist for A Matter of Fate is ginormous—over a hundred songs, I think? But there are several bands whose songs definitely influence the book: Death Cab for Cutie, Frightened Rabbit, and Cloud Cult are the big three. A Matter of Heart’s playlist isn’t quite so enormous, but it’s still pretty big. There’s a lot of Frightened Rabbit on that one, too, plus the National, Neko Case, and Amy Seeley.

OUaT: Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?

The impetus behind the Fate series was my fascination with ancient world mythologies. That said, I think every author puts tiny bits of themselves in the story. Chloe and I share just a few things (her love of dresses and hot chocolate, for example), but mostly, she and the rest of the characters are purely from my imagination.

OUaT: Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

I have been so lucky over the last year to meet some of the most wonderful fans both online and in person. To everyone who is coming along this journey with me, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope you’ll enjoy the rest of Chloe’s story! And to Once Upon a Twilight, thank you so much for having me here today. I love this blog!

Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn't a normal teenage girl. She's a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she's a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she's to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind. Their number one target? Chloe, of course.

That's nothing compared to the boy trouble she's gotten herself into. Because a guy she's literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to.

Chloe's once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.
No longer in high school, Chloe Lilywhite is now living and working in Annar, the Magicals' city-state plane of existence. Since moving, she's joined the Council, gone on missions with the Guard, moved into her own apartment, and enrolled at the University of Annar. Plus, she's happily engaged to be married to Jonah Whitecomb, the literal man from her dreams, not to mention her Connection. While she still struggles with aspects of her craft, Chloe feels like she's finally coming into her own, especially after a difficult year that had her questioning nearly everything in her life. After a brutal attack by the Elders, her life is turned upside down once more. Accusations fly throughout the Council and Guard, forcing Chloe to confront her worst fears about what's she's capable of as a Creator. And then there's the matter of Kellan Whitecomb, Jonah's twin brother and Chloe's ex, who resurfaces after disappearing months before. Although Chloe chose Jonah, and despite their best efforts, the two find it hard to stay away from one another.
But no matter what Fate throws at her, Chloe is determined to take charge of her life, even as it begins to spiral out of control.
A MATTER OF HEART is book 2 in the Fate Series, a mature Young Adult/New Adult fantasy.
