Blog Tour: The Summer of Broken Things by Margaret Peterson Haddix | Giveaway

Welcome to Day #9 of The Summer of Broken Things Blog Tour!

To celebrate the release of The Summer of Broken Things on April 10th, blogs across the web are featuring exclusive content from Margaret Peterson Haddix and 10 chances to win a copy of the book!

Secrets

Before my first book was published, I worked as a newspaper reporter—for a while I was even an investigative reporter, where my job was specifically to dig out secrets that officials wanted to keep hidden.

This was long enough ago that several of my co-workers had been around during the Watergate era, and some of them were fond of quoting a journalistic lesson of that event: “It’s not the crime; it’s the coverup.”  In other words, what gets people into the worst trouble often isn’t their original mistake or bad behavior; it’s the other crimes and lies they’re driven to commit and tell as they try to hide what they’ve done.

I think this can be just as true with private family secrets as with public ones: Sometimes secrets fester.

And that can be true even when the original secret is perfectly innocent.

My newest book, THE SUMMER OF BROKEN THINGS, revolves around two teenaged girls whose families have kept a rather large secret their entire lives. When Avery and Kayla accidentally find out the secret during a summer in Spain, both of them are forced to re-evaluate what they know about their parents—and themselves.

The saddest thing about the secret in Avery’s and Kayla’s families is that only one of their four parents actually wanted to keep the girls from knowing it. Avery’s mother is ashamed—though she shouldn’t be—and all the other adults involved keep the secret because of her. What could it hurt?

But secrets have a way of showing themselves even when they aren’t completely revealed. Avery and Kayla both see mysteries in their childhoods that make no sense until they know the family secrets. It’s a little like trying to make sense of the unequal status of women and people of color in twenty-first century America without knowing anything about the suffrage movement, the civil rights era, slavery, the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, who was or wasn’t considered a citizen when the country was founded, etc.

Or, for Kayla and Avery, like trying to understand Spain without knowing anything of its history except the connection to Christopher Columbus.

Typically when I am writing a book, I talk very little about what I am working on; I prefer to put all my energy and excitement into the writing itself. But with THE SUMMER OF BROKEN THINGS, in the interest of research, I talked to a few friends and family members about how much of the family history they would tell Avery or Kayla if it were their family.

I was a little surprised to sometimes hear the response, “Why would you tell a kid that? I can totally see why parents would keep that secret.”

I also talked to psychologists who deal with families and kids in similar situations to Avery’s family (and to a lesser degree, Kayla’s) and they told me about the betrayal kids can feel when they find out a family secret like that—when they find out that some basic assumption they’ve always had about their family and themselves is totally wrong. The, psychologists told me about how kids could begin equating the secrecy with shame—and not just shame about the secret, but shame about the kids.
It’s ironic: Parents keep secrets thinking they’re protecting the kids, but sometimes it’s the secrecy itself that can be most damaging.

In another context, I once had a conversation with a group of kids about secrets, and about what ages kids should be when they find out certain scary facts about the world—when they learn about “adult” topics. I talked about how pretty much everyone would agree that, say, five-year-olds should be protected from certain information. But what, I asked, should kids their age be allowed to know?

One of the girls in the group had an instant answer: “Everything.”

That did not surprise me.

From New York Times bestselling author Margaret Peterson Haddix comes a haunting novel about friendship and what it really means to be a family in the face of lies and betrayal.
Fourteen-year-old Avery Armisted is athletic, rich, and pretty. Sixteen-year-old Kayla Butts is known as “butt-girl” at school. The two girls were friends as little kids, but that’s ancient history now. So it’s a huge surprise when Avery’s father offers to bring Kayla along on a summer trip to Spain. Avery is horrified that her father thinks he can choose her friends—and make her miss soccer camp. Kayla struggles just to imagine leaving the confines of her small town.

But in Spain, the two uncover a secret their families had hidden from both of them their entire lives. Maybe the girls can put aside their differences and work through it together. Or maybe the lies and betrayal will only push them—and their families—farther apart.

Margaret Peterson Haddix weaves together two completely separate lives in this engaging novel that explores what it really means to be a family—and what to do when it’s all falling apart.

At Woods Edge
Of The Trees #2

It’s only a matter of time before he gets what he’s come for.

Cassie Harris has turned her back on best friend Laney Blake. She had no other choice. Laney is one of them now, a creature of the trees. As Cassie’s senior year wears on, the woods grow quiet, snow blankets the ground, and the murderous beings who once taunted her have drifted away like the brittle leaves of Fall. Though the woods no longer stir with rushed whispers and wind-blown laughter, the fear remains.

No one understands this fear better than Cassie. She wishes she could tell them not to worry. After all, the shape-shifting men of the trees and the women who travel with them, seeking out girls to abduct from carnivals, are gone. And the one that stayed behind? He isn’t interested in anyone but her.

Now, Aidan’s interest in Cassie is a chilling reminder of the what lurks at woods edge. He stalks her home, her school, her bedroom. He won’t stop until he can find a way to lure Cassie into the forest to become one with him forever.

Dear Reader (a note to your readers)

Dear Reader,
So you’ve decided to join me in the woods, hmm? Are you sure you know what you are doing? It’s not safe, not at all, and yet I’m taking you there anyway. We’ll travel together, you and I, down the secret pathways of the forest. And we will come out alive (well, most of us will). And we will see things that can’t be unseen. Are you sure you’re ready?

Yeah?

Too late, we’re going anyway.

Now hold on tight, because all is not what it seems. But here’s what I want you to focus on: what would you risk for the promise of safety? If I swore you’d be safe, but you’d have to hide away for that to happen, would you run and hide? What if I promised that all your friends and family would survive to the conclusion of the story, but you’d have to give up on your dreams in order to make that happen, would you? If I ensured you that all would be well, but only if you gave up everything you love, everything you are, is it worth it? And even if you agree, can safety ever be guaranteed? I wonder.

Cassie Harris isn’t sure, but she’s about to find out. So will you, if you follow in her footsteps through the restless forest. The answer is waiting for you just beyond that first tree at woods edge.

Yours most sincerely,

E.M. Fitch

Blog Tour: Nowhere But Here | Katie McGarry | Review | "Fears" | Giveaway

Today I'm excited to be a part of Katie McGarry's Nowhere But Here blog tour.

Nowhere But Here was AMAZING! Highly recommended. Keep reading as I'll share details about McGarry's latest release and her exclusive post about "FEARS".

Nowhere But Here
Thunder Road #1
Author: Katie McGarry
Reading Level: Young Adult (mature)
Genres: Contemporary Romance | Motorcycles
Released: May 26th 2015
Review Source: Harlequin Teen

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns into an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Cover:
I love every inch of that cover. From the font to the color palette used. I'm glad the cover
actually matches the story with the motorcycle. So happy its not another cover with a girl and a guy kissing or hugging. This cover just pop for me.  Wouldn't you agree?

Action:
Yes plenty of action throughout the book. We are dealing with motorcycle clans that are rivals. Your heart will be hurt and also filled with love during all the highs and lows. Kept me at the edge of my seat most of the time.

Romance:
With a guy named Oz, you know there has got to be some really delicious romance in this book. I like how Emily and Oz build but fight it also. Will have to read to see how they end up. Lots of pieces to be picked up and they both will need each other.

Something I loved:
I really loved how Emily started to accept her father side of the family and the relationship that develop with her snarky grandmother. Will fill you with joy but have tissue on hand.

Favorite quote:
“This is your family … If you learn to love us then you will forever have our love in return.”

FEAR written by Katie McGarry

Let’s get one thing straight. I hate funeral homes. Hate. I hate the smell of them. I hate the look of them. I hate the thought of them. Hate. And what I hate more than funeral homes are dead things. Dead bugs. Dead dried-up worms on the sidewalk. Roadkill. And since that ill-fated stroll in the woods at the age of eight when I fell into a hole and spent the night with a corpse, I hate dead people’s bodies. --From Emily NOWHERE BUT HERE

I one million percent empathize with Emily on the above statement. Emily, the seventeen-year old main character in my newest Young Adult novel, NOWHERE BUT HERE, is terrified of dead bodies. Honestly, though she isn’t quite aware of it at this point in the story, what Emily is really scared of is death.

And for a long period of time, so was I.

As a young child, I refused to walk into a room where there’s a dead body. It sent chills down my spine, caused my hands to become cold and clammy, and my stomach would churn.

On the occasion I had to go to a funeral home, my parents would often sit me in a chair outside the viewing room and I would wait impatiently, imagining all of the horrible things that might happen if we didn’t leave the funeral home that moment. To be honest, I was imagining Walking Dead episodes at least thirty years before the show ever aired. But in my head, I ran screaming when a zombie appeared and never did I even think about fighting back.

In NOWHERE BUT HERE, Emily travels to Kentucky and visits with her estranged biological father because of news of a death. Due to unforeseen circumstances, what was supposed to be a quick trip ends up with her staying longer, and it also causes her to be staying with her grandmother—a woman who is dying of cancer.

Dying.

For Emily, this almost terrifies her as much as being inside a funeral home. Why? Emily likes her world neat and orderly and she likes to understand what’s going to happen at all times. She doesn’t like the unknown and that is exactly what death is…an unknown.

Emily’s grandmother, though, teaches Emily a valuable lesson. She shows Emily that there is life in dying. Olivia doesn’t get wrapped up in what’s to come, she’s more concerned with living her best life that day, that hour, that minute. Soaking up as much time as she can with the people she loves.

As Olivia put it to Emily “I’ve fought a good fight and lived a great life. God calls us all home at some point.”

Dying is very much a part of living. It is not something to be feared as much it is a reminder that we should enjoy every minute we have now. That time is a gift that should never be squandered.

Emily in NOWHERE BUT HERE faces her fears and comes out learning how to love with her whole heart and how to fight past her fear of the unknown.

Now thanks to the good folks over at Harlequin Teen, we have one finished copy of Nowhere But Here to give one lucky reader.

J.R. Ward Let's Her Fans Know "Why I'm Afraid of the Bourbon Kings"

The WARDen has shared a message with her devoted fans about her fears regarding her new release The Bourbon Kings, coming out this July.

I have been a loyal fan/reader for many years now and have a good feeling that this book will be a hit.

Below you can catch snippets from J. R. Ward's post about "Why I'm Afraid of the Bourbon Kings", to read the post in its entirety just CLICK HERE

Okay, so rolling up to the July 28th release of the first book in my newest series (THE BOURBON KINGS,) I know I'm supposed to talk about how fabulous the book is, how much people are going to like it, how great the world building is, etc., etc., etc., how my readers should jump into the...

Blah, blah, blah.

Look, the sh*t doesn't suck, okay?

Let's just get that out of the way up front. (Oh, and in case you're wondering, that's about as much praise I give my own work lol, so take the statement with that in mind.)

Yes, I love the BOURBON KINGS. Of course, I do. I wrote the book from the heart, and I want to write the other books in the series because I see them so clearly and so urgently that it takes me back to DARK LOVER days.

But I'm sh*t terrified.

And the truth is, that's the way it SHOULD be.

Naturally, I want to vomit.

The BOURBON KINGS is a different series than the BDB in some ways-for example, if there's blood shed, it's not because someone's hungry. And if there's a scent of baby powder around, it's because someone's burping an infant on their shoulder. At its core, though, you have a group of people confronted with a series of monumental problems that require them to either band together... or sink like a stone.

There's even a guy with a lot of scars. (And before anyone asks, yes, Edward is my favorite. And yes, he pays for sex. And yup, he's in love with a woman he's not involved with. And uh-huh, she has her own issues. Whyyyyyyy whyyyyyyyy do I always love the complicated hurt ones the most???)

And so I'm scared of the BOURBON KINGS in the same way I was scared of DARK LOVER. I want the opportunity to write the whole series- whether it's six books (like my Fallen Angel series) or open ended and forever like the BDBs- and that is only going to happen if readers embrace the people, the places, the stories.

And I have no control over that.

Nor should I.

But no one knows what people are going to think. And that's what keeps me on my toes. And makes me grateful for the people who love my books enough to spend their hard earned money on them. It would be an honor to get to keep writing the BKs. That's my dearest hope.

But not my expectation.

And there's a world of difference between the two.

Jeez, just like the old days, huh?

Happy Reading! And thank you!

Steampunk 101 Brought To You by Esther Wheelmaker

Steampunk 101
The formula for steampunk goes as follows:
MAD SCIENTIST INVENTOR [invention (steam x airship or metal man / baroque stylings) x (pseudo) Victorian setting] + progressive or reactionary politics x adventure plots = STEAMPUNK

Now, let us break this down and use my book, Gravely Inanimated, as an example for all this!

Mad Scientist Inventor: The inventors in lots of stories for steampunk are normally men. Including my own. I did this however, because I used Countess Samantha Ashdown as a different kind of strong female character in my book. I decided to make the Inventor the brainy type that is a tad dysfunctional when it comes to human contact. Whereas the Countess acts as the strong kick-butt character that handles the Inventor and is the brawn of the operation. So in a sense I did it in a different kind of way and yet I didn’t. I went with the stereotypical male as the inventor, yet added a female to be the brawn. However, in stories like Sherlock Holmes you see a male as the inventor as well. I recommend breaking away from this and adding a twist to your inventor in the story.

Inventions: As you can see you want to use steam powered inventions that were popular in the 19th century. Lots of writers like to be inspired by the art of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne for fictional machinery they built by using their art. But most steampunk-goers are enamored by the work of Edison or Tesla. You will see a lot of steampunk workshops or panels that discuss the two and their work.

The Metal Man or Airships: Though you can add both, I believe it is good to go with one or the other because you will be adding your own elaborate stylings to these creations. Now you may hear the term Automaton (Metal Man). Those terms are universal so don’t worry about missing out on something. To make my automatons elaborate in Gravely Inanimated, I made them killing machines because the characters are surrounded in a world that is full of zombies and that is what they would be most useful for. Airships, however, might be introduced in my third book to the Zombiepunk Series. So don’t worry!

Victorian Setting: Why is pseudo used when talking about the Victorian setting? Well, that would be because steampunk is either science fiction or fantasy based. It is not always the real victorian setting that authors research and make as real as possible. Some of us take our own liberties with the Victorian Age. However, normally we stick to the main attractions. IE Queen Victoria is normally the queen in the story and women are normally oppressed in some way or another. But, it is a fake type of Victorian Setting because back in the 19th century there were not the type of inventions we add to a lot of fantasy and science fiction books.

Reactionary Politics: What I find to be most true in the politics of the 19th century in steampunk books is that there is a group of people challenging the government in some way. For instance, in Gravely Inanimated I have made a man, Aeron, who hunts zombies as a vigilante. If he were ever unmasked and found out who he really is it could cause a real stir in the politics surrounding the society and who can do what there. The same way most super heroes test the boundaries of their own government in comic books today.

Action Adventure: Well, this one is quite easy. In Gravely Inanimated I have added zombies in to the game and there is a lot of fighting with these zombies therefore lots of action adventure. Even look at books by Kady Cross, such as her Steampunk Chronicles series where you see lots of battles and training for the young people with amazing abilities. It’s crazy fun and I couldn’t see a good steampunk book without a good steampunk action scene.

I hope this blog post as helped to explain the steampunk genre in a more understandable way for you!

Before I end this I would like to make one last suggestion. I am currently doing a fundraiser for myself to go to the Steampunk World Fair! I am giving away a handmade zombie doll with every purchase of a Hug A Zombie t-shirt you buy!

Here is my “spiel” (imagine how hard sales is to do over the net. So every little bit of money helps!)

You know what happens when the wolf stops blowing? He doesn't blow the house down! That is what I am talking about here. I'm talking about succeeding at life. And that is what I want to do!

This project will go toward helping me to go to the Steampunk World Faire in New Jersey on May 16th-18th. What I need is a room and a table to do my vending at. This journey into the steampunk world will help me to move forward with my writing. You want to know what inspires a writer? Life does. And life at the Steampunk World Faire helped me to write a book in a MONTH. Help me again write a book in a month by sending me to the land of steampunk inspiration.

My Zombiepunk book series helps those that are young see the greatness that is strong female characters and great heroic men. It introduces you into the life of V is for Villains (if their personas were in the 1890's). Take an action filled ride on the steampunk train of life and help me give to you so you can give to me!

Halloween in the Hole
by Abi Ketner & Missy Kalicicki

You’d think in a place like the Hole, Halloween would be a no-brainer, right? I mean lets face it, the Hole could be Halloween every night. There is no shortage of thugs, horrors, and more tricks than treats. But we forget something important: the Commander.

The Commander isn’t a fan of Halloween. He says it promotes the seven deadly sins, especially gluttony and lust, and forbids anyone to celebrate it. And since he’s the biggest monster we know, why dress up and pretend to be him?

Now, the parents old enough to remember the excitement of Halloween find other ways to celebrate. In hushed tones, they sit around fires they’ve build to keep warm, regaling their children with their favorite tales. Huddled close together, they watch as their whispered words light up the eyes of the children they hope will carry on their traditions.

But the difference in many of these stories is the heroes usually win over the terrible demons. The good always triumphs over the evil, and the children are left desiring the hero, the one who slays monsters like the Commander, climbs walls like the Hole, and brings joy to everyone.

While in the Hole, the monster still lives on, in their hearts, they’re free. Yes, Halloween in the Hole is a night of hope, not a night of fear, for one day they hope to rise against the monster who keeps them caged there. That one day the monster will be defeated and somehow their society can be saved.

Yes, the Commander has more than one reason to fear Halloween in the Hole.

BRANDED (Sinners #1)
Author: Abi Ketner & Missy Kalicicki

Fifty years ago The Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society.

To punish the guilty, he created the Hole, a place where sinners are branded according to their sins. Sinners are forced to live a less than human existence in deplorable conditions, under the watchful eye of guards who are ready to kill anyone who steps out of line.

Now, LUST wraps around my neck like thick, blue fingers, threatening to choke the life out of me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit, and the Hole is my new home.

Constant darkness.

Brutal and savage violence.

Excruciating pain.

Every day is a fight for survival.

But I won’t let them win. I will not die in the Hole.

I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter. My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

Any spare time is dedicated to chocolate licking, rifle slinging, friend hugging, and the great outdoors. For more information about Tera and her work, visit www.terashanley.com.
