I cleared my throat. “What does the faerie language sound like?”

Eldrick’s tense, furrowed brow went slack. His expression became
as serene and blissful as the cool surface of the moon. “Music,” he
breathed the word as though it were ecstasy.

“You mean like the chimes?” I knew that sound well.

He nodded slowly. “Ages ago, some called it the music of the
spheres. Your father possessed an exquisitely intimate knowledge of
spellsongs. He could hear the tones and translate the harmonics into
the human language.” We paused at a corner, letting a few bicyclers
pass on the sidewalk. “To be perfectly frank, I’m impressed he was
able to do such a thing. The details of our language, particularly the
ancient spellsongs that comprise spellwork, are difficult for even an
elder fae to discern. I’ve never seen so many texts about us in the
human language before.”

My head spun with questions as I tried to keep up with Eldrick’s
long strides. “What’s a spellsong? And what does it have to do with
spellwork?”

“A spellsong is, as you described it, the chimes. The use of magic
of any kind has a unique sound. A song, if you will.”

My lips parted—that was why I heard that sound whenever Zeph
or Eldrick worked magic!

“Some are more distinct and obvious than others, usually
depending on their desired effect. But each note, each melody, can be
paired with a unique shape, line, or design—something your father
quite skillfully deciphered.” He stopped at the edge of a crosswalk
and turned to face me. “It isn’t unlike how humans write sheet music.
You need to see the notes in order to understand how a song is made.”
“Do faeries have to write down all their spellwork, too?”
He smiled and opened his other hand. One twist of his wrist, and
a beautifully intricate ring of bright runes appeared. It hovered in the
air above his open hand, glowing softly while the details, designs, and
smaller rings within it moved like the inner mechanisms in a pocket
watch.

My breath caught as the familiar tingle whispered over on my
skin. I heard the soft, whispering of bells in my ear.

Other people were walking and cycling by, passing us on the
sidewalk. But no one else even seemed to notice. It was as though
they couldn’t see it at all. It was just the same as when Lumi had
kidnapped me—they were blind to it.

“Most faeries do not require a knowledge of how a spell is made.
For us, it is innate—comparable to someone who can play by ear
rather than requiring sheet music. But there are instances where we
must know how to read spellwork, such as in the case of learning a
new spell, or performing a ritual that would be otherwise unnatural
to us,” he explained, snapping his hand closed and extinguishing the
spell. “Apparently, your father had begun developing some of his own
spells; a dangerous endeavor for a human. His journals are full of
them.”

Blog Tour: Fearless by Jennifer Jenkins + Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on Fearless tour for Jennifer Jenkins. This tour is hosted by Chapter by Chapter.

Fearless
Author: Jennifer Jenkins
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: October 17th 2017

In exactly twenty-three days, Gryphon will offer his life to Chief Barnabas in exchange for the lives of his best friend and mess brothers. Until then, he must keep his plans from Zo while avoiding the Wolves of the Allied Camp. But Gryphon is not the only one harboring secrets. To spare her own life, Zo has made a blood oath promising to help the Kodiak Clan free their families living as Nameless slaves. When Gryphon learns the truth — that the peaceful life he’d planned for Zo is not secure — he divulges a secret that will give the Allies the upper hand against the Ram.

Now, The Great Move is underway and a final battle between the Wolf, Ram, Kodiak and Raven cannot be stopped. Strength will be tested. Loyalties will be questioned. Alliances will form. In a world of uncertainty and danger, Zo and Gryphon may finally have what they’ve each always wanted.

I have loved this series since the beginning. I have followed Zo and Gryphon through so much as well as seen them grow into the characters that they are. It almost feels as though they are my kids, or my cousins that I am watching grow and I am sad that this trilogy is over.

This book grips you right away. You pick up a little bit after where the second book left off and it throws you into suspense right away. You knew that Gryphon had his own set of plans at the end of the second book, but part of me had hoped that he would've decided against this plan of action where we pick up in the third book....
Being an avid reader I know that there is NO possible way this could happen but one can still hope.

Jenkins has yet again vividly painted a world in which I wish I belonged. I want to be a part of Zo and Gryphon's group of friends, and I want to be a part of their adventures. Through Jenkins' writing, though, I feel as though I am. As though this story is their reiteration for a long lost friend who needs to be caught up on the goings on of their life.

If you have yet to read Nameless and Clanless do yourself a favor and do so, so that you can get to this epic conclusion that will not disappoint.

With her degree in History and Secondary Education, Jennifer had every intention of teaching teens to love George Washington and appreciate the finer points of ancient battle stratagem. (Seriously, she’s obsessed with ancient warfare.) However, life had different plans in store when the writing began. As a proud member of Writers Cubed, and a co-founder of the Teen Author Boot Camp, she feels blessed to be able to fulfill both her ambition to work with teens as well as write Young Adult fiction.

Jennifer has three children who are experts at naming her characters, one loving, supportive husband, a dog with little-man syndrome, and three chickens (of whom she is secretly afraid).

The Oceanids descended upon the campus from their barracks like a wave crashing against the shore. Telesto, the most beautiful sea nymph by several stadia, smiled at me for the first time since I’d been going to the school. Okay, it wasn’t a full smile. The corner of her lip twitched upward as she flipped her wavy, aquamarine hair over her shoulder and glanced past me. But that counts, right?

I backhanded Anytos in the chest. “You saw that. That’s my opening. If I don’t make my move, she’ll be gone to the upper school next year.”

“Pssht, she is beyond the Mediterranean beautiful. Completely unattainable.”

“Did you see that come hither stare she flashed me?”

“Looked more like indigestion.”

“You are as wrong as you are false. Cover my back. I’m moving in.”

I crossed the courtyard in a flash and caught Telesto’s arm as she reached the weather-beaten front door to the main school hall.

“Telesto, you look as if the sun radiates from you.”

She paused and leaned back against the doorframe. “You’re just saying that because I wore my yellow tunic today.”

“You shine with such brilliance; you should wear yellow every day.”

She folded a strand or two of stunning teal hair behind her ear and twirled the ends. “But what happens when I wear my purple tunic?”

“A tunic hasn’t been invented that could dampen your beauty.”

She giggled and turned away from me for a moment. “Zeus, is it?”

I nodded, surprised she even knew my name.

“You’re the one who pulled that massive prank on my mother, Headmaster Tethys, aren’t you?”

Oh, that’s how she knew me. Not invisible after all. I bowed. “I am him. He is me. One and the same.”

“Crazy. She was so mad.” She shook her head, stifling a smile.

“As far as I can tell, language arts must be your favorite subject. Your tongue is spectacularly sharp-witted.”

“Not really. But I am feeling a little inspired right now.”

Several strands of her hair fell to cover half her face. “Are you going to the bonfire at the beach tomorrow night?”

“I wasn’t invite—”

Several of Telesto’s broad-shouldered, dark-haired brothers bumped into me from behind. “Those are uncharted waters, boy. Careful now,” One of them called over his shoulder. Those were the first words they’d ever spoken to me. Telesto rolled her eyes. “Pay them no mind. They’re harmless. You were saying?”

“Those bonfires are an Oceanids and Potamoi thing? It’s kind of a secret club that you have to be born into, right? Being brothers and sisters, children of Headmasters Okeanos and Tethys… young water deities in training… masters of rivers and streams…”

“I guess. But you should come out any way. It’s all night, under the stars. Eating, drinking, stargazing… What’s better than that?”

Gazing into her mesmerizing, iridescent eyes, my mouth fired before I could stop it. “Kissing you under the stars. That’s better.”

“Sprint much? You’re a fast mover.”

“I just go after what I want.”

“Well … ” A pink tint rose on her high cheek bones. “We shall see. But first you have to show up.”

Her lips twitched gain. “I have to go to class. See you tomorrow?” She disappeared inside the school hall.

Zo, the object of his affection, was murdered by members of his former clan. To honor her memory, he journeys to the highly secretive Raven “Nest” to warn strangers of their impending demise—though it could cost him more than just his pride.

He doesn’t know that Zo is very much alive and in another part of the region assisting Nameless refugees over a mountain swarming with wild men known as “Clanless.”

As each struggle to make sense of what their lives have become, they fight and claw to reach the Allied Camp, their last hope in bringing peace to the region.

But the road back to one another is treacherous and uncertain. And freedom will come with a price.

Top 5 fave quotes from Clanless

Thank you so much for having me. I had a difficult time choosing my top five quotes, mostly because several of my favorite lines from CLANLESS are spoilers involving the love story. Leaving those out, here are my top five!

1. “There’s no such thing as needless fear. Without fear, you can’t be brave.” -Eva, Ram Clan

2. “We resent the term ‘Nameless,’ boy.” Joshua startled when Stone appeared behind him. “We have names and we’ll never be forced to live without them again.” –Stone

3. “Great men are mighty in life and in death.” -Gryphon
4. “Only a Clanless would bother stealing the shoes of a former slave.”-Zo
5. I will defend my family,” he gestured to Joshua and Zo, “but I will not live with innocent blood on my hands.” Gryphon staggered and dropped to one knee. “My conscience won’t allow it.”  -Gryphon

Book Review: Fear My Mortality by Everly Frost

Fear My Mortality
Mortal Eternity #1
Author: Everly Frost
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: April 5 2016
Review Source: Month9Books

In a world where people are invulnerable to illness and death, with lives spanning hundreds of years, a sixteen-year-old becomes witness to the impossible – her brother’s failure to regenerate after death after which she suspects that she too may be mortal.

What do you fear when you're able to regenerate from death?
What keeps you human when you know you're able to come back?

This story is one that I feel everyone should read. Fear My Mortality relates to literally everyone. Death is a constant in our lives, it surrounds us with the sad reality of our world. To have a book bring it to light in such a way makes you actually think about things in a different light.

While the book is quite large it was a quick read. I sat down and read 100 pages within an hour. I knew that it would be a quick book for me. And the subject matter made it easier for me to chew too. Wanting to know what was going to happen next. Why, in a world full of regenerations of people, were Ava and her brother in danger?

Ava is humanity - at least that's how I read the book. Ava is what we all feel. Even if we weren't in her position, she still has mostly the same thoughts and feelings about certain topics that we all share. And that's why this is such a relatable book.

Book Review: Clanless by Jennifer Jenkins

Clanless
Nameless #2
Author: Jennifer Jenkins
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: October 4 2016

Striker Gryphon has lost his position of honor among the Ram, and is now a hunted man. A traitor.

Zo last saw Gryphon before he gave himself up to the Ram to protect their little family. Unsure what his fate is has left her to take charge of being the caretaker while also worrying about him. One thing is for sure, no matter what they live their life for the other.

Nameless ended and I wasn't sure what to do with myself. I needed more Gryphon and Zo. Finishing Clanless was the exact same. It has left a hole in me, if not bigger than it was before. Gryphon and Zo need to start openly talking to one another - that's my biggest thing. Leaving one another in the dark doesn't end up getting them anywhere good! And it leaves readers on the edge of their seats!

I went into Clanless thinking - for some reason - that this was the end of this series. That it was a two book series and that I would get closure....so when the end approached let's just say I was horribly shocked. But then realized that meant more books were to come. Which then made me such a happy reader! While the wait will be torturous, it will be worth it.

In Clanless we see Gryphon and Zo grow as characters. Into beings that are strong and capable of things they weren't aware they were capable of. Jenkins yet again transports us into this wilderness where we want to decide if we are a Wolf, or a Ram. Where we hope we're not Clanless, but now being Nameless has a sense of pride and hope accompanied with it.

The action adventure that goes on within this book is enough to make you wish you were fighting alongside Gryphon, Gabe,  and Zo. The relationships that get bonded make you wish you were on the receiving end of the love that gets shared. Yet, Jenkins makes you feel as though you are. She lets you in, and secretly makes the characters love you as you love them.

Blog Tour: Genesis Girl by Jennifer Bardsley + Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on the Genesis Girl tour for Jennifer Bardsley. This tour is hosted by Chapter by Chapter Blog Tours.

Genesis Girl
Author: Jennifer Bardsley
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Science Fiction
Released: June 14, 2016
Review Source: Month9Books

Eighteen-year-old Blanca has lived a sheltered life. Her entire childhood has been spent at Tabula Rasa School where she’s been protected from the Internet.

Blanca has never been online and doesn’t even know how to text. Her lack of a virtual footprint makes her extremely valuable, and upon graduation, Blanca and those like her are sold to the highest bidders.

Blanca is purchased by Cal McNeal, who uses her to achieve personal gain. But the McNeals are soon horrified by just how obedient and non-defiant Blanca is. All those mind-numbing years locked away from society have made her mind almost impenetrable.

By the time Blanca is ready to think for herself, she is trapped. Her only chance of escape is to go online.

I made a mistake with this book. I started it as I was in bed ready to sleep thinking I'd just read a chapter. Well, a chapter turned into two hours and being halfway done with Genesis Girl. I finished it the next morning and was amazed.

Genesis Girl follows our main girl Blanca and her journey with the "tech" world. It is set in a future where technology and the internet have affected the human race negatively-- causing brain cancer because of cell phones. So it's been upped and people WORSHIP their tech. Doesn't sound futuristic at all if we remove the brain cancer part.

So, there's a school, Tabula Rasa, where children raised there are 100% tech and internet free. They are called blank slates and once they graduate they are sold off to the highest bidder. The highest bidder is usually a company who will use their blank slate to sell their product. People trust the blank slates since they have no fingerprint online so they buy whatever it is they are selling. Blanca doesn't get sold to a company, she goes geisha. Geisha meaning she is sold to a person and not a company. Cal MacNeal buys her for a very personal reason.

I love the growth of Blanca in Genesis Girl. She starts off as a literal blank slate and kind of catches Cal off guard. But, he pushes her to find herself and that was kind of amazing to see through. His son, Seth, (the reason Cal needs Blanca) is her complete opposite yet she starts falling for him! I can't say too much without giving anything away but overall the plot, the characters, and the story were on another level of good!

This book shames you and captivates you altogether. Yes, I am attached to my phone 24/7, but tech can't be bad right? All in all Genesis Girl makes you THINK while enjoying a totally unique and interesting read. I can't wait to read the next installment in this Blank Slate series!
