Top Five Favorite New Adult Movies

I’ve been a fan of the new adult genre for years—I just didn’t know that’s what it was supposed to be called. I’ve always loved college age romances, ones where the characters are on their own for the first time and learning what it is to be an adult at the same time they’re falling in love. That’s probably why I fell in love with Abbi Glines’s The Vincent Boys and Colleen Hoover’s Slammed the moment I picked them up (not to mention Crash by Nicole Williams and Walking Disaster by Jamie Maguire). From the moment I read the very first book I knew this is what I wanted to be writing—which is why I am so, so, SO excited that I’m launching two new adult series in the next two months: Ruined (Ethan Frost dualogy) and Shredded (the Extreme Risk series).

But my love of all things New Adult came much before I picked up my first NA books. I think it must have been there all along when you look at my favorite movies of all time. So, with no further ado, here’s my list of favorite movies (all of which fit well within the NA genre).

5. Say Anything—“I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen.” I swear, that’s one of the best lines in a romance ever written  And while, yes, this is technically a teen movie, I think it totally counts for the New Adult genre as it takes place in the summer after high school graduation. Lloyd Dobler is just one of those characters you have to love (at least if you’re a romance novelist). A little lost, a lot of fun and totally the worst guy on the planet for the heroine except for the fact that he flat out adores her.

4. Crazy/Beautiful—Again, this technically might be a teen movie, but I don’t think so. Both characters are dealing with really heavy issues essentially on their own as they negotiate the rocky waters to adulthood. And I love the flip here—he’s still the poor boy from the wrong side of town, but he’s the good guy while she’s the bad girl from the right side of town (they meet while she’s working off her probation picking up trash on the beach). The emotional intensity of this movie combined with the sweet moments between the two main characters make me melt every time I see it.

3. Dirty Dancing—“Nobody puts baby in a corner.” I swear this is one of the most iconic phrases of my generation. I love this movie so, so much. Patrick Swayze as bad boy Johnny Castle who desperately wants good girl, Baby/Francis, but knows he can’t have her. There’s so many reasons for them to stay apart (her family, his job, her future, his past) and yet they just can’t keep away from each other. Add in the scene at the lake where he’s teaching her lifts and what’s not to love????

2. The Cutting Edge—Do I really need to say anything about this movie? This is the movie that whenever I’m flipping channels on the TV and it comes on, I HAVE to watch it. Have to, have to, have to. It’s also, incidentally, the one that’s been watched so much that just the sight of an ice skate going across ice will send all four of the males that live in my house running for the hills screaming, “No, not again!” But what’s not to love? She’s an uptight ice princess/poor little rich girl. He’s a rough and tumble hockey player from the wrong part of town who is trying to build a new life for himself after a catastrophic-to-his-career injury. It’s a match made in romance heaven.

1. Good Will Hunting—MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME. SERIOUSLY. I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH. SO, SO, SO MUCH. It’s the movie that made me fall in love with Matt Damon and I think, to a certain extent, it’s the movie that absolutely solidified my love of bad boys (one of my most infamous quotes during a panel is “All bad boys have a boo-boo”). My friends still haven’t let me live that one down, LOL. But it’s totally true and so apparent in this movie where Will Hunting is struggling, not so much with his intelligence, but with the childhood abuse that is keeping him from trusting and loving Skylar.

I think I feel a movie marathon coming on, LOL. Anyway, this is my list of top five new adult movies. What are your favorites? And don’t forget to enter the contest to win a year of Tracy Wolff books (there are a ton of them coming out this year) …
