Shadowhunters and demons square off for the final showdown in the spellbinding, seductive conclusion to the #1 New York Timesbestselling Mortal Instruments series.

Darkness has descended on the Shadowhunter world. Chaos and destruction overwhelm the Nephilim as Clary, Jace, Simon, and their friends band together to fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary’s own brother. Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell. Nothing in this world can defeat Sebastian—but if they journey to the realm of demons, they just might have a chance…

Lives will be lost, love sacrificed, and the whole world will change. Who will survive the explosive sixth and final installment of the Mortal Instruments series?

(or an entire forest)

“And like lambs to a slaughter we shall follow...”  ― Cassandra Clare, City of Heavenly Fire

Okay so we get to City of Heavenly Fire and Sebastian is out to take down Shadowhunters, turning them into the Endarkened, taking away everything that makes them who they are. Jace is filled with the Heavenly Fire, the Mark of Cain is off of Simon and he’s vulnerable because you know he’s a daylighter (can be out during the day) and other vampires want that. Magus and Alec are still broken up, which breaks my heart and Izzy is Izzy, ever so fierce and scared to love.

We start at the prologue where we are at the Los Angeles Institute with Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorn family when the institute is attacked by Sebastian and his Turned and Endarkened warriors. Luckily the kids were able to get out before Sebastian could make them Turn. So this is where we’re at, Sebastian is becoming stronger and smarter, and he is completely ruthless and it’s just the prologue. And if you’re a fan of the Shadowhunter world you know that we get Emma’s story next in The Dark Artifices, so Cassie is setting us up for what will be coming while closing this story.

This final chapter for The Mortal Instruments series had so much going on every single page it’s hard for me to decide what I should include in this review, I really don’t want to give away anything. Jace and Clary are trying their darn hardest to get the Clave to listen to them about Sebastian, he is very cold and very calculated, he anticipates what the Clave will be set out to do before they even decide to do it. And who else knows Sebastian better than Clary and Jace; I mean come on Jace was in his HEAD, Clary was right alongside them in Valentine’s house. Yet the Clave won’t be persuaded by what those two have to say or what they think he will try and do.

This entire book is finding out a way to destroy Sebastian, he isn’t easily killed; it won’t just take a knife to the heart or a bullet to the head to stop him. We go on a roller coaster ride trying to take him down and we come along some known friends (cough The Infernal Devices cough). It’s all a matter of who to trust and what to trust in others to do.

If you’re a huge fan of this series as I am, and everything Cassie writes, you’ll absolutely love this conclusion. I felt it all, anger, fear, joy, anticipation, everything and anything. I’m a person who reads before bed and this was not the book to do that with, I was up until 4 am every night, I could not put it down. It was perfect, so perfect. And Cassie did such an amazing job of tying everything together, every loose end and even showed us how something happened in The Infernal Devices, and then sets us up for The Dark Artifices. All the Shadowhunter series are able to be read by themselves, but if I were you I wouldn’t want to miss anything.

“One must always be careful of books, and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.” – Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Angel

  1. Good review! Good job on managing to tie it all together without giving away anything, I know how hard that is! I managed to read the whole thing, and not break the spine which is what I am super proud of :D I feel so sad the series is over, but no, it isn't the end of the Shadow world. Looking forwards to the next series!
