Interview
1. What were your biggest challenges in writing All that Burns?

I’d had quite a few manuscripts under my belt by the time I started writing ALL THAT BURNS, but this novel held a lot of firsts. Writing under a deadline. Writing under contract. Writing for an editor. Writing for a fanbase. There were so many expectations I hadn’t experienced with the other books, which in turn brought a lot of mental pressure. Also, writing sequels is far harder than first books. You’re contained to the rules of the world you created in book one, and you have to find new ways to challenge the characters and make them grow.

2. Tell me a little about a couple of characters in your book. What kind of personalities do they have?

Emrys is the main character. When we met her in ALL THAT GLOWS she was a young Fae who was assigned to guard the British Royal family against assassins and Soul Feeders. In ALL THAT BURNS she’s making the transition into a mortal life, since she decided to give up her magic in order to be with King Richard. She is a stubborn, fierce fighter—a character trait which only makes her transition from Richard’s protector to girlfriend even harder.

Princess Anabelle is an overachiever. She is the type of person who tries to do everything perfectly all of the time and usually does. But when the crap hits the fan, she’s more than ready to step in and take charge. (It’s kind of amazing actually.) She is an ode to all the girls I knew in high school who did ten extracurriculars and got perfect SAT scores. I still don’t understand it.

Kieran is a brand new character. He belongs to an immortal race called the Ad-hene—spirits of the earth who live under the Isle of Man and guard the labyrinthine prison of the Faery queen. By nature he is very reserved and he seems intensely fascinated by Emrys’s desire to give up magic for love. His questions eventually cause her to question…

3. In what ways do you relate to Emrys?

In this book, Emrys is going through an identity crises and questioning her life choices, which is something everyone does at one point or another. The loss of her magic makes her very nostalgic for it (ie. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone), and she doesn’t really feel “at home” in either the courts of the Fae or Buckingham’s halls. That sense of displacement is definitely something I felt when I was living as an expat overseas. I never completely fit in there, and when I came home, I had a completely different perspective that set me apart from many of the people I grew up with.

4. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I loved writing the scene where Emrys first visits the Labyrinth of Man. It’s the perfect combination of creepy and mysterious, and it’s one of the very first moments in the book where Emrys really starts to question her choice to become mortal. It was fascinating for me to delve even deeper into the world of the Fae by portraying the Ad-hene. Plus it was really fun to write the crazy rantings of a really important prisoner.

5. If you had a doover, would you tackle anything differently? (this can be about writing the novel itself (change the ending, plot etc) or about the writing/publishing process overall)

I tried to write ALL THAT BURNS in a way that would let it tie into a third book, but also have it stand alone (we pitched three books to HarperTeen and they bought two, with the possibility for a third). Now that I have other contracted books that I’m working on, it’s looking less and less likely that I’ll be able to make ALL THAT GLOWS a trilogy (though never say never). Knowing what I know now, I would maybe close out ALL THAT BURNS a bit more solidly, leaving no question that it’s a duology.
