Grace Mae knows madness.

She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.

When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.

In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.

Interview

In less than 140 characters, how would you promote A Madness so Discreet on Twitter?
A Gothic  historical thriller set in an insane asylum. (That’s really all you have to say, people jump right on that!)

Can you explain the significance of the title and cover (which I love!) without spoilers? Maybe just a hint?
The title is a line from Romeo & Juliet, about how love itself is a madness. I like the idea that some things we consider normal are actually quite insane if you dissect it.

Do you have a favorite line from your book?
“They work their discreet forms of madness on us, power and pain, and we hold to our truths in the darkness.”

Can you share with us your top 5 of the spookiest scary stories you have ever read?
Some of the best ones I’ve read recently are in an anthology titled AMONG THE SHADOWS (which I also have a short in). Thirteen amazing YA writers – including Beth Revis and Joelle Charbonneau – shared dark shorts for this project. It’s a chilling read!

What books are you most excited about in 2016?
DOWN WITH THE SHINE by Kate Karyus Quinn is a great one that I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC. Other than that I honestly am not terribly in tune with what’s coming out in 2016 – I’m still catching up on 2015.

Mindy McGinnis is an assistant YA librarian who lives in Ohio and cans her own food. She graduated from Otterbein University magna cum laude with a BA in English Literature and Religion. Mindy has a pond in her back yard but has never shot anyone, as her morals tend to cloud her vision.

  4. I have read this one and I really did like it! The book covered so many points and even taught me about how madness was treated in history which I didn't know about before.
