Khosa is Given to the Sea, a girl born to be fed to the water, her flesh preventing a wave like the one that destroyed the Kingdom of Stille in days of old. But before she’s allowed to dance – an uncontrollable twitching of the limbs that will carry her to the shore in a frenzy – she must produce an heir. Yet the thought of human touch sends shudders down her spine that not even the sound of the tide can match.

Vincent is third in line to inherit his throne, royalty in a kingdom where the old linger and the young inherit only boredom. When Khosa arrives without an heir he knows his father will ensure she fulfills her duty, at whatever cost. Torn between protecting the throne he will someday fill, and the girl whose fate is tied to its very existence, Vincent’s loyalty is at odds with his heart.

Dara and Donil are the last of the Indiri, a native race whose dwindling magic grows weaker as the island country fades. Animals cease to bear young, creatures of the sea take to the land, and the Pietra – fierce fighters who destroyed the Indiri a generation before – are now marching from their stony shores for the twin’s adopted homeland, Stille.

Witt leads the Pietra, their army the only family he has ever known. The stone shores harbor a secret, a growing threat that will envelop the entire land – and he will conquer every speck of soil to ensure the survival of his people.

The tides are turning in Stille, where royals scheme, Pietrans march, and the rising sea calls for its Given.

You know those stories that you cannot put one and two together, because you're confused but you can't let it go until you reach the end? Well, that is how I felt with Given to the Sea. Yet, when you reach the end, you're mad because it's over?! Seriously, it slowly becomes an addiction and you really don't know it until you're completely hooked.

I am a fan of Mindy's writing. She is fantastic and an amazing in world building. I should've known she will capture my attention with this story like she did with Not a Drop to Drink. Like NaDtD, Given to the Sea is brutal and terrifying. It got me. And I really enjoyed this story.

Given to the Sea is not an easy book. It's filled with drama, politics, violence, history and mystical creatures. A story center on the sea and it's people. A place in which one must be willing to sacrifice someone else. A place where it's people will need to do anything and everything to protect it's land and those chosen by the sea. Unfortunately, its people are not really likable. Especially, Khosa... the main character. Although there are three other POVs, Khosa is the main character, and boy, was she not pleasant. Her job is to breed and produced a daughter to fulfilled her destiny.... yeah... WTF is going on, is a great expression. You'll have to read it to try to put the puzzle together.

If you're looking for a dark and different fantasy story, then you should give Given to the Sea a try. You may question the beginning... trust me you will but you get some answers... Until you read the end. Mindy throws few curve balls and you are left confused. HA! Back to the beginning... So a sequel is a must to get your answers.

Overall, Given to the Sea is an interesting story with some interesting elements. The world building is amazing and even though the characters are not really lovable, the story will keep you engage.
