Audiobook Review: The Dead Zone by Stephen King

THE DEAD ZONE
Author: Stephen King
Narrator: James Franco
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Thriller
Released: April 25, 2017
Review Source: Simon Schuster Audio

Never before on audio! A #1 national bestseller about a man who wakes up from a five-year coma able to see people’s futures and the terrible fate awaiting mankind in The Dead Zone—a “compulsive page-turner” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Johnny Smith awakens from a five-year coma after his car accident and discovers that he can see people’s futures and pasts when he touches them. Many consider his talent a gift; Johnny feels cursed. His fiancé married another man during his coma and people clamor for him to solve their problems.

When Johnny has a disturbing vision after he shakes the hand of an ambitious and amoral politician, he must decide if he should take drastic action to change the future. The Dead Zone is a “faultlessly paced…continuously engrossing” (Los Angeles Times) novel of second sight.

The Dead Zone is such a unique story.  Well, all of Stephen King books are amazing and unique.  He is one of my all time favorite authors.  Definitely my favorite author in his genre.  I've been reading his books since I was a teenager, which I won't mention how long ago that was, I'll just say for a LONG TIME.  Every single book I have loved for different reasons.  He is an effin genius.  How one man can come up with so many different interesting bizarre concepts for books I'll never understand.

This story is about a hero, Johnny Smith, that really gets dealt a pretty crappy hand.  I actually really love his character.  Through everything he goes through he still perseveres.  It's really painful to listen to sometimes because I was routing for him the whole time and hoping things would work out for him.

James Franco was the narrator of this book.  I thought he did a pretty good job of narrating.  His voice was kind of nasally as some points but other than that I really was enthralled listening to him tell me the story.  He kept my attention the whole time.

I am rating this book 4 stars because I loved the story when I read it but listening to it brought the story to life on a whole different level.  I highly recommend all of Stephen King's books!

Movie Review: 20th Century Fox's Why Him? - #WhyHim

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry—and Ned’s panic level—escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.

There are a ton of movie choices this holiday season.  Some are very good.  Others are not so bad.  And, then, there is Why Him? It stands on its own level, its own level of not watchable. I make it a point to work-in something positive about every film I review.  But, this one has zero redeeming qualities.  The whole thing is crude and outdated.

It’s 2016!  The premise of the film is that a ne’er-do-well in personality (but app mogul in finances) is trying to win the hand of the woman he loves over the objection of her father.  The app mogul is played by James Franco, the dad is Bryan Cranston and the daughter is Zoey Deutch.  If you see the theatrical poster, you will notice that Franco, Cranston and Deutch are all on it.  However, only Cranston and Franco are credited on the poster.  Deutch’s name doesn’t appear anywhere, not even in tiny letters.  Take that sentiment and extrapolate it to the movie.  Both of these men are combating over the future of a woman, and the woman is relegated to a second class role.  No one seems to care what she thinks.  My frustration was exacerbated because the plot makes the woman (Deutch) a college student at prestigious university, indicating that the character has a brain.  The only other woman in the movie is relegated to an even lower class of role.  I love Megan Mullally’s comedic abilities.  They were wasted on Why Him? with Mallully playing a stereo-typical mom role.

The supposed humor isn’t funny, it is just crass.  I am all for pushing the envelope, but submerging a moose in urine isn’t humorous. It isn’t novel.  It’s just gross. And that is only one example.  Same goes for inserting expletives into the dialogue for every third word.  It isn’t creative.  It’s lazy writing.  The movie is figuratively full of moose in urine.  The entire story is a series of ridiculously outrageous set-ups for jokes that fail to land.  I didn’t laugh a single time.

The last ten minutes of the movie are sort of charming.  There is a good cameo then.  I won’t ruin that part, in case some of you still want to see this.  But that is it.  Ten good minutes.  And those ten minutes are not funny, either.  They are, at best, cute.  I recommend you see anything else this holiday season.  If, despite my best efforts, you still want to see Why Him?, it opens on December 23.

Movie Review: A24's The Adderall Diaries - #TheAdderallDiaries

The Adderall Diaries
Director: Pamela Romanowsky
Writers: Pamela Romanowsky, Stephen Elliott (Memoir)
Starring: James Franco, Amber Heard
MPAA Rating: Rated R for language throughout, drug use, sexuality, and some aberrant and disturbing content
Official Socials: Facebook | IMDb
Hashtag:  #TheAdderallDiaries
As a writer stymied by past success, writers block, substance abuse, relationship problems and a serious set of father issues, Elliott's cracked-out chronicle of a bizarre murder trial amounts to less than the sum of its parts. Not long into the 2007 trial of programmer Hans Reiser, accused of murdering his wife, the defendant's friend Sean Sturgeon obliquely confessed to several murders (though not the murder of Reiser's wife). Elliott, caught up in the film-ready twist and his tenuous connection to Sturgeon (they share a BDSM social circle), makes a gonzo record of the proceedings. The result is a scattered, self-indulgent romp through the mind of a depressive narcissist obsessed with his insecurities and childhood traumas.

This film is one that will be hard for most people to take in. This is a realistic film; one in which you don't necessarily get a for sure happy ending with a clear path of where the characters will be in 10 years. This might be because it's based off of a memoir, but it could also be because of the subject manner too.

I loved the soundtrack of the film. It was amazing, it helps to boost the emotions of whatever Stephen is feeling in the moment. Whether he's reliving memories of his past, or he's in turmoil in the present day, the music is there to help you feel exactly what he is feeling.

At this moment - I just finished the film - and I feel that this is one of those movies that will stick with me for a long time after I've finished watching it. I'm not sure how I feel about it, which usually means in a week I'll be able to tell you that I absolutely loved it. But for the time being I have to let it rest in my mind and make me think about it.

It's rough because you want the best for Stephen. And when you watch films you tend to always get that arc for the main character. The he's doing good, hits rock bottom, then makes it back to the top better than ever. With this you get the feeling that Stephen is doing okay, he's trudging through, and then he hits rock bottom. There were many points in the film where I thought he'd never be able to come back from that. And I feel that this is where some viewers might have issues with the film. Everyone wants the main character happy, but when a film is as realistic as this one is you're not sure if there will be a happy ever after. You hope for it, and I choose to believe that there could be, but it's up for everyone to decide.

James Franco. I love that man as an actor. Most people know him for his comedic roles in Pineapple Express or This Is How It Ends. But honestly. For me he shines in his serious roles. 127 Hours was when I realized that he is a man of many talents. That he is a man I will most likely watch anything he is in. And The Adderall Diaries only reinforced those beliefs for me.

Homefront

Storyline: HOMEFRONT stars Jason Statham as former drug enforcement agent, Phil Broker, a family man who moves off the grid with his daughter, to a seemingly quiet bayou backwater to escape his troubled past. However, Broker’s world soon becomes anything but quiet once he discovers that an underbelly of drugs and violence riddles the small town. Soon, a sociopathic methamphetamine kingpin, Gator Bodine (James Franco) puts Broker and his daughter in harm’s way forcing Broker back into action in order to save his family and the town.
With the screenplay written by Sylvester Stallone, who first established worldwide recognition as a writer when his screenplay Rocky, won the Academy Award® in 1976 for Best Picture, Homefront is based on the book by Chuck Logan. The action-thriller is directed by Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury, Kiss the Girls) and produced by Stallone alongside Kevin King Templeton and John Thompson, with Trevor Short and Avi Lerner executive producing through Millennium Films. Kate Bosworth, Winona Ryder, Frank Grillo and Izabela Vidovic also star.

Homefront
The story captured my interest from the start of the film with the drug bust gone horribly wrong and then the undercover agent resigning from that life to live out with his daughter in the quiet Bayous of Louisiana. But things don’t always stay swept under the rug like how you hope they do because the quiet life this dad wants for his daughter and himself gets turned up side down faster than a Nascar driver completing a lap. A schoolyard altercation between his daughter and a bully at school doesn’t end at the playground, not in those parts of town. People talk and stir things up and one thing leads to the next and before you know it, that drug bust gone wrong from 2 yrs ago comes biting you back in the ass.

Jason Statham once again delivers like he knows how. Pretty much every film that Statham has starred in I have been entertained and Homefront was no different. I think I’ll go ahead and say this might be my favorite Statham film. Maybe it was the father-daughter relationship he excelled at selling to the audience of a father that stops at nothing to protect his little girl or it could be the heart-stopping action he brought with his stellar fighting moves. Regardless Statham delivered. He was the perfect guy to play the role of Parker.

Now let me tell you who left me gaping with my mouth open. Kate Bosworth I didn’t recognize her at first then I was like holy shiz! I couldn’t believe my eyes, Bosworth really took to heart her role as a meth addicted because she sold me. She looked emaciated and just plain filthy, just like if she really was tweaking everyday. I want to say she lost weight on purpose for this role because she was just skin and bones and not the beautiful Kate we have come to know on the big screen in other films.

Homefront is worth every cent to go see at the theater, you will definitely get your money’s worth. It has all the right elements that made it the right kind of action-thriller. Plus its a film that can be enjoyed by both sexes, so ladies after you dragged your significant other to see The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, surprise your guy by taking him to see Homefront.
