The world of legendary writer J. D. Salinger is brought vividly to life in this revealing look at the experiences that shaped one of the most renowned, controversial, and enigmatic authors of our time. Set amidst the colorful backdrop of mid-20th century New York City, Rebel in the Rye follows a young Salinger (Nicholas Hoult) as he struggles to find his voice, pursues a love affair with famed socialite Oona O’Neill (Zoey Deutch), and fights on the frontlines of World War II. It’s these experiences that will inform the creation of his masterpiece, The Catcher in the Rye, bringing him overnight fame (and notoriety) and leading him to withdraw from the public eye for the rest of his life. Costarring Kevin Spacey and Sarah Paulson, Rebel in the Rye offers a tantalizing window into the life and times of a little-understood genius who broke the rules and redefined American literature.

It is strange to have a movie about the life of J.D. Salinger.  The author of The Catcher in the Rye was a notorious recluse.  By all accounts, Salinger alienated just about everyone in his life and avoided public attention.  And, oddly, it is that exact reclusiveness which makes bibliophiles yearn to know more about Salinger. I was very much looking forward to this week’s Rebel in the Rye and it did not disappoint.

Anyone who has read The Catcher in the Rye, and appreciated it, will enjoy this film.  I hesitate to call Rebel a “biopic.” I don’t trust that Rebel is any more an actual depiction of Salinger’s life than Catcher was.  We (the public) can’t know the exact details of Salinger’s life and his thought processes.  Salinger didn’t tell anyone.  And, while some biographies on Salinger attempt to piece together some of the mystery of the author, the truth is that we will never know.  Rebel is enjoyable as one take on Salinger and as an almost big-screen adaptation of Catcher.  The parallels between Catcher and Rebel took me back to my first reading of Catcher (and Franny and Zooey) and made me want to dig up my old copy so that I could read it again.

I enjoyed the casting of the film.  Nicholas Hoult (as Salinger) has developed into a great screen presence.  It has to be difficult to translate some of Salinger’s insane thought processes onto screen, but Hoult did it very well.  Kevin Spacey (as Whit Burnett) played the mentor role perfectly.  I love, love, love Spacey, in everything.  It’s almost not fair to put a young actor opposite Spacey, but Hoult and Spacey complemented each other beautifully.  Sarah Paulson (as Dorothy Olding) added a great dimension to the cast.  Her last scene with Spacey was awesome.

I did have some trouble with the pacing of Rebel. The pacing is uneven throughout.  I didn’t mind it because the pacing is uneven in Catcher, and I hope that the uneven pace was a nod to the book. Still, Rebel sort of sticks in the middle.  (This means I looked at my watch.) It’s about an eight minute stick. After that, the story shifts a bit and I didn’t notice anymore sticking.  But, to be honest, I even liked the stuck part of the movie, because it reminded me of being stuck during my first reading of Catcher.

The nostalgia factor for Rebel is through the roof.  The film brings back familiar phrases from my college days and attempts to answer some of the questions readers of Catcher had about its author.  It’s good nostalgia.  The movie attempts to do Salinger justice and attempts to explain some of his idiosyncrasies in a respectful manner.  Even better,  Rebel is a real slice of Americana, and a good excuse to re-visit some of the classics.

Rebel in the Rye opens everywhere this weekend.  Head out to the art house theater, take in some Americana, get to know an American author and let the nostalgia hit you.

I am not one of the book readers on this site.  I know I should read more, but I see movies, a lot of movies.  On February 12, I screened Before I Fall, and it was easy to see why the book was a bestseller.  The story has all the makings of a good movie.  The characters are gorgeous, the setting is beautiful and there is a lot of teenage drama.  While, this isn’t a movie that was made for me, it is one that I enjoyed viewing with my tweens.  I think it’s a good movie for families.

The fresh-faced case is enjoyable. Zoey Deutch (as Samantha) leads a young cast (Halston Sage, Logan Miller, Elena Kampouris) in this coming of age story with a positive message.  Deutch is a good lead.  I am interested to see what she is going to do in the future.  She has great screen presence.  I liked Logan Miller, too.

The plot is simple enough.  The story takes place on February 12th, over and over.  It explores the belief, by some,  that the younger generation lives their life as if the world was going to end tomorrow, then it asks the questions “What if it really was your last day on earth? Are you happy with your legacy?” I didn’t bother to wonder why the day was repeating.  That’s irrelevant, and it doesn’t detract from the story. Everything from teenage love to family relationships is touch upon.

I appreciated the message of the film.  I am so glad that I took my kids to see it.  There are a couple of not-so-comfortable topics brought-up in the story, but this story gave my family an opportunity to discuss several subjects brought up by the film.

Not every movie is made for all audiences. Before I Fall is made for teenagers. But I appreciate that it was a movie that parents and teens can watch together.  And I didn't hate it, or roll my eyes, or fall asleep. That is saying a lot. Great film for spring break. Take some teens. Before I Fall opened this past Friday.

Movie Review: 20th Century Fox's Why Him? - #WhyHim

Why Him?
Director: John Hamburg
Writers: Jonah Hill, John Hamburg
Starring: Zoey Deutch, James Franco, Bryan Cranston
Official Socials: Site | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | IMDb
Hashtag: #WhyHim
Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry—and Ned’s panic level—escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.

There are a ton of movie choices this holiday season.  Some are very good.  Others are not so bad.  And, then, there is Why Him? It stands on its own level, its own level of not watchable. I make it a point to work-in something positive about every film I review.  But, this one has zero redeeming qualities.  The whole thing is crude and outdated.

It’s 2016!  The premise of the film is that a ne’er-do-well in personality (but app mogul in finances) is trying to win the hand of the woman he loves over the objection of her father.  The app mogul is played by James Franco, the dad is Bryan Cranston and the daughter is Zoey Deutch.  If you see the theatrical poster, you will notice that Franco, Cranston and Deutch are all on it.  However, only Cranston and Franco are credited on the poster.  Deutch’s name doesn’t appear anywhere, not even in tiny letters.  Take that sentiment and extrapolate it to the movie.  Both of these men are combating over the future of a woman, and the woman is relegated to a second class role.  No one seems to care what she thinks.  My frustration was exacerbated because the plot makes the woman (Deutch) a college student at prestigious university, indicating that the character has a brain.  The only other woman in the movie is relegated to an even lower class of role.  I love Megan Mullally’s comedic abilities.  They were wasted on Why Him? with Mallully playing a stereo-typical mom role.

The supposed humor isn’t funny, it is just crass.  I am all for pushing the envelope, but submerging a moose in urine isn’t humorous. It isn’t novel.  It’s just gross. And that is only one example.  Same goes for inserting expletives into the dialogue for every third word.  It isn’t creative.  It’s lazy writing.  The movie is figuratively full of moose in urine.  The entire story is a series of ridiculously outrageous set-ups for jokes that fail to land.  I didn’t laugh a single time.

The last ten minutes of the movie are sort of charming.  There is a good cameo then.  I won’t ruin that part, in case some of you still want to see this.  But that is it.  Ten good minutes.  And those ten minutes are not funny, either.  They are, at best, cute.  I recommend you see anything else this holiday season.  If, despite my best efforts, you still want to see Why Him?, it opens on December 23
