You know when you’re looking at someone and you can’t help but smile at how oblivious they are to their own charm? That’s what was happening to me, and it was making me feel…happy. Euphoric. Something indescribable. It was like we already knew each other, like we had met in a previous life. Memories that didn’t exist began exploding in my mind like fireworks.

Charlotte has spent her twenties adrift, searching for a spark to jump-start her life and give her a sense of purpose. She’s had as many jobs as she’s had bad relationships, and now she’s feeling especially lost in her less-than-glamorous gig at a pie-and-fry joint in Los Angeles, where the uniforms are bad and the tips are even worse.

Then she collides—literally—with Adam, an intriguing, handsome, and mysterious painter. Their serendipitous meeting on the street turns into a whirlwind one-night stand that has Charlotte feeling enchanted by Adam’s spontaneity and joy for life. There’s promise in both his words and actions, but in the harsh light of morning, Adam’s tune changes, leaving Charlotte to wonder if her notorious bad luck with men is really just her own bad judgment.

Months later, a new relationship with Seth, a charming baseball player, is turning into something more meaningful, but Charlotte’s still having trouble moving past her one enthralling night with Adam. Why? When she searches for answers, she finds the situation with Adam is far more complicated than she ever imagined. Faced with the decision to write a new story with Seth or finish the one started with Adam, Charlotte embarks on a life-altering journey, one that takes her across the world and back again, bringing a lifetime’s worth of pain, joy, and wisdom.

I really liked this book!  This was such a special, impacting story.  I have been excited to read this since I heard about it.  Renee Carlino is one of my favorite authors that doesn't get enough attention in my opinion.

I read Wish You Were Here in one sitting and felt all the feels the entire time.  It was so much more than your typical romance book.  Right away I connected with the heroine, Charlotte (Charlie) Martin.  She is in her late 20's and doesn't really have her life together.  She lives in a cheap apartment, working as a waitress, not meeting anyone worth her time.  I think many people will be able to relate to Charlie because she's not picture perfect wrapped in a bow, she's real.

Then she meets Adam and OMG their connection is insane.  They hit it off immediately.  I love Adam, he is me in male form.  He's an artist and quirky I love that I connected so well with both characters.  I can't say too much without giving away spoilers but Charlie and Adam's time is short and a third player is added to the game, Seth.  While I like Seth, he's not Adam.  I struggled with accepting where this story took me but it was beautiful all in all.

I am rating this book with 4 stars because I really enjoyed this book as I do almost all of Renee's books and couldn't put it down the entire time.  I do have to warn you to get your tissues ready because I ugly cried while reading this book.  I definitely recommend giving this book a one click!

EXCERPT

“You’re making love sound tragic,” I said.
“No”—he shook his head—“I wouldn’t want it any other way. Tell me about us. What do we like to do?”
“Paint and sail and eat and drink. Just simple things.” “Don’t forget about sex,” he said.
“Yeah, lots of sex. Before the children were born we
"We were practically naked every second of the day.”
“I like that.”
“When they got older, we’d sneak away for weekends and leave them at my mom’s.”
“What are they like? Our children.”
“Happy. That’s all we wished for. We put our love first and it just spilled over into them and now they’re happy.”
Tears sprang from my eyes and ran down my cheeks. Isn’t that what we all hope for when it comes to our children?
His tone suddenly changed. “That’s beautiful, Char- lotte.” It was like he was waking up from the dream. I didn’t want to go back to reality yet, but I knew these fantasies were just to help Adam get his mind off things.
“I can imagine a long life with you,” he said. “I can imagine what a great wife you’d be."
I pulled my hand out of his. “The story is about you and me.” He didn’t say anything; he just nodded and then continued to stare out the window. I bent and kissed the top of his head again, and whispered, “It’s about us. Don’t take that away from me.”

Book Review: Lucian Divine by Renee Carlino

LUCIAN DIVINE
Author: Renee Carlino
Reading Level: New Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Released: January 9, 2017
Review Source: Publisher

From USA Today Bestselling Author, Renée Carlino, comes a totally unique love story that is sure to make you question what’s out there . . . or who.

“My guardian angel is a drunk.”

Evelyn Casey's life is at a standstill. She's in her mid-twenties, struggling with the dating scene in San Francisco. Nothing seems to be working out, and she’s starting to think that she’ll live out her days in her crummy apartment with her overbearing roommate, Brooklyn. It's absurd, but sometimes Evey longs for a guardian angel to show up and save the day.

And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he's a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good—he's brilliant, witty, and warm—and bad—he's brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as ----. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he’s got problems of his own. He’s taken up drinking and he’s brazenly inserted himself into Evey’s life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created.

For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God.

Yes, God as in God.

I'm torn writing this review.  I absolutely love Renee Carlino's writing but Lucian Divine was unlike anything I've read by her.

Lucian was a guardian angel assigned to watch over Evey.  Evey had dated many different types of people but like her best friend, Brooklyn, she didn't usually see anyone more than two times.  She ended up going on a third date because she seemed to have a lot in common with the guy.  During their date, he goes to get a drink from the bartender and talks briefly to a "drunk" man.  Then, all of the sudden he started acting uninterested in Evey.  So she leaves and walks home.  Feeling very confused she goes back to the bar and speaks to the "drunk" man, Lucian, and her life is forever changed.

Starting with what I liked, I loved the cover of this book.  I thought it was really beautiful.  I also loved the idea of it.  Angel story lines are one of my favorite types of books to read about.  This angel story line was especially unique because Lucian was an alcoholic. The angels got paid like a regular job, had electronics, and even dated other angels.

I really liked how this book started out, but at about 10 percent in, the story seemed to completely rush by in a blur of odd situations and dialogues.  Insta-love is an understatement in this book.  I understand the love Lucian would feel for Evey but her immediate leap to do anything to be with Lucian was kind of frustrating for me.

I am rating this book 3.5 stars because I did think it was entertaining and different but I didn't love it.  I was able to read the book very quickly, within about day.

Book Review: Swear on This Life by Renee Carlino

Swear on This Life
Author: Renee Carlino
Reading Level: New Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Released: August 9, 2016
Review Source: Atria Books | Netgalley

When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J.Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

The Story:  Swear on this life starts with Emiline, a professor, trying to write but not quite successfully. In a rut, her roommate basically forces her to read the hugely successful book written by "J. Colby". As soon as Emi starts reading, she discovers that the book is about her life growing up in rural Ohio with her childhood best friend/love. This story is about Emi's self discovery and healing through words and a journey of acceptance and closure.

The Likes:  Be still my heart I LOVED THIS BOOK. I loved everything about it. This is actually my first Renee Carlino book and I was blown away by her writing and creativity. I loved that it was written based on present time but that we learned so much of her past with Jase through his book. I thought the story-line was so unique and unlike anything I have read before. I thought Renee's description of their hometown was perfect, I could picture, perfectly, the long dirt road as if I was walking beside them to school in the mornings.

The dislikes:  I really didn't have any dislikes with this book. The only "complaint", if you can call it a complaint, is that I LOVED the secondary characters (her two aunts, her best friend, older version of her dad) and would have loved for them to have had some more "air time". It would have been awesome to see more of their relationships and interactions.

The rating:  I give this story 5 STARS because it is one of my favorite reads of 2016! Renee evoked every emotion in me while reading this book. I laughed, cried, seethed, cheered, and celebrated with the characters. It is such a beautiful story that will stick with me for a very long time.
