Houston's Comicpalooza Spotlight: Author Rose Garcia

Today we feature one of Comicpalooza attending guest.
Which happens to be a known author to OUaT.

Rose Garcia, author of The Transhuman Chronicles.
Rose took time out of her schedule to do a Q&A with us all about Comicpalooza and her books. Enjoy!!!

OUaT: Welcome Rose, I’m so glad to have you visiting today. This month, we both will be attending Houston's Comicpalooza (The Texas International Comic Con). You will be attending as an author and I’ll be going as one of the official bloggers. So let's start with why Comicpalooza?!
Why are more authors starting to attend these comic cons in different cities?
For the science fiction/fantasy (SFF) and paranormal lover, going to cons like these is like going to Disney World! And if you write these genres, then it’s twice as awesome! Not only do you get to be there as a comic book fan, but as a writer you’re able to connect directly with people who are really interested in your kind of books. I also think comic con attendees are avid readers, and readers are always looking for something new to add to their TBR pile. And I have the perfect books for them!

OUaT: Have you attended Comicpalooza or any other similar event before? How did it help get the word out about your books?
This will be my third time to go to Comicpalooza. The first time I went, my first book, Final Life, had just released. It’s a YA sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal. The book was well received, and I was beyond thrilled! The following year, the second book in the series, Final Stand, had released. It was so cool to see people there to actually see me and buy the book. This year I’ll be there with Final Death, the conclusion to the trilogy, and I can’t wait!

OUaT: Now besides the fact that you’ll be attending Comicpalooza to promote your works of fiction, what else are you excited to see or do at Comicpalooza?
STAN LEE! He was there last year and I missed him. I’m definitely going to do whatever I need to do to see him. My BIG dream is that one day Tom Hiddleston will be there. If you go to my Pinterest page you’ll see that I’m slightly obsessed with Tom. LOL (https://www.pinterest.com/roseonprose/)

OUaT: Do yo have some type of strategy for this event?
My strategy at events is always the same. Have fun and talk to as many people as I can about my books. That’s pretty much it!

OUaT: Now tell us, does Rose plan to dress in costume or as they would call it in the comic con world, will you be cosplaying? If so I cant wait to see what you'll be dressed as. I haven't decided myself yet, if I will be in some the of costume.
I wish! And I’ve often thought about wearing something that will tie into my books, but sadly there isn’t really anything. I may, however, color my hair. We’ll just have to see. However, my assistant, my daughter, is all gung ho on cosplay. I think she’s going as Blink this year.

OUaT: Back to Comicpalooza, can you share with us what your schedule will be for those attending that would like to meet you and buy your books?
I will have a table all day, every day in the Artist Alley. So come see me! As for panels, you can catch me here:
  • Saturday, 5:30-6:30: Essentials of Fantasy- Books You Must Know
  • Sunday, 1:00-2:00: Multiculturalism in Science Fiction and Fantasy
  • Monday, 1:00-2:00 The Best of Fantasy and Horror on TV

OUaT: Before we go, let your fans know what is next for Rose Garcia. Do you have an upcoming signing, future book or promotion happening now that you would like to share with us all?
After Comicpalooza, my next big events are UtopYA Con in Nashville from June 18-21, the San Antonio Indie Book Festival on July 12th, and the Texas Book Festival October 17-18. I have more events I’m calendaring, and you can keep up with me at www.rosegarciabooks.com.
OUaT: Thank you so much Rose for taking time out of your busy writing schedule and hanging out with us today. See you at Comicpalooza!
Thank you so much, Yara! I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Con! Please come find me!

EXCERPT

The image of blue sky, white sand, and calm waters popped into my mind, edging out the fear and panic that had taken over me.
My body slipped to the ground. My knees sank into the cool, pebbly sand. A soft breeze flowed through my hair. Farrell stood beside me at the water’s edge, staring out at the still water. He extended his arm and helped me to my feet. I brushed myself off, recalling the terror and pain I had just left behind in the red desert. I patted my chest.
            “Am I really here?”
“No,” Farrell said sadly. “Only your mind is here.”
“Farrell, am I—?” I paused, not wanting to say the words, as if keeping them to myself would change my fate. “Am I dying?”
“Yes.” He took my hand. “There’s nothing I can do.” His calmness filtered into me. And for a minute there, death didn’t seem so bad.
My attention turned to a bird in the distance that soared through the cloudless sky. For eight lifetimes now I had died, and this was my last time. The world would never be the same, and it was my fault.
Farrell squeezed my hand. “Remember what I said? The last time we were here?”
Of course I remembered. “You told me the end is not yet written, and to trust myself.”
The bird, a white Egret, flew closer and glided right over us, wings outstretched. A lone, feather escaped its plumage. The delicate quill drifted back and forth in the sky. Just like the feather from my dreams and the feather Ms. Ryken had given me that I had later seen at Jan’s. And then it dawned on me that it was the same color as Farrell’s aura. I extended my hand, reaching out for it. When it touched my palm, it disappeared.
Like flipping a switch, I was back in the desert. Heat exploded inside me. The air in my lungs had almost emptied. Warm, thick blood dripped from my fingers. Farrell and Trent were on the other side of Tavion’s dark energy force, and I was still inside, barely alive. Tavion continued to lift me at my throat, squeezing the life out of me.
            “Dominique! Fight!” Trent yelled.

GIVEAWAY

Once Upon a Signing: Houston Book Rave 2015!

This past weekend, the city of Houston was overrun with authors and book lovers alike at the Houston Book Rave, hosted by A Book Lovers Review and Good Choice Reading. Readers swarmed the Double Tree Hobby Hilton to see several of their favorite Romance, New Adult, and Young Adult authors.

I actually had the opportunity to volunteer at this event. I've been to several of these book signing events before, but this was the first time where I would be helping out! I was super nervous, but everyone was so helpful and happy to have me there that I felt right at home among the other readers and bloggers!

Here is a goofy selfie taken in the bathroom (I know...I know) showing off my official volunteer badge:

Yes, I know I'm a really big dork, but I was just so excited to be a part of this awesome event!!

I also met some really awesome authors there as well. You could definitely tell that some of them have done events with each other before. They kept getting out from behind their tables to mingle and get their books signed as well! It was a great atmosphere and everyone was so welcoming and helpful.

Here is a picture of a few of the YA authors who sneaked into the NA and Romance section of the conference. They were so naughty leaving their posts!! I was the "Bouncer" making sure that anyone under the age of 18 didn't enter the Romance area since some of the covers were a little too steamy.

YA authors from left to right: Rose Garcia, Jordan Deen, Vanessa Kimbal and Rachel Harris

What a great group of YA authors!!

Houston Book Rave offered their fans a variety of things to do. Not only could they visit with their favorite authors, but they could also get books signed, get sneak peeks of their upcoming books, but they could also pose for pictures with some really steamy cover models.

As you can see, there were a lot of authors!!

Overall, I had a fabulous time volunteering at this event. They kept me busy!! I'm looking forward to attending Houston Book Rave next year!!

Book Review: Final Stand by Rose Garcia + Interview

Final Stand
Author: Rose Garcia
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Released: March 21, 2014
Review Source: Author

Dominique is still alive after killing Tavion, the Tainted who's hunted her for lifetimes. Yet her protectors still fear for her life. They force her to flee Houston and abandon the friends she loves. But they can't protect her from herself. When Dominique starts hearing Tavion's voice in her head, she realizes that her personal connection to the Tainted still exists. And when her car is ambushed, she discovers another frightening truth—someone close to her is a traitor. Desperate for answers, Dominique seeks the aid of first lifers Trent and Infiniti. With their help, she hopes to find her new enemy. But things get complicated with Trent when she finally accepts her eternal love for Farrell, and even more complicated when the whispers in her head threaten her loved ones. Determined to live, Dominique decides to make a final stand against the forces that want to end her. For good.

Not only did the covers of Rose Garcia’s novels grab my attention, the main character Dominique did as well. I immediately made a connection with her when I realized that she was a senior and was being asked to move away to whole other life of friends, people, places. Everything you don’t want to do when you are at that point in life, where you feel that you have just one more step to take before you reach that next level in life. I had a similar experience in life, where moving away and connecting with everything new was just an experience that I thought would be the end of the world. However, it wasn’t. Unfortunately, for Dominque, things didn’t really work out so grand for her. Life is truly changing. The world she use to know is no longer there. People are entering her life that aren’t always as they appear on the outer surface. In an effort to have some fun and forget about her current situation, one touch of cards changes things for Dominique forever. Dominique has a mystery to solve, many choices to make, while at the same time, vow to stay alive. Rose Garcia truly infuses a realistic plot with a full splash of fantasy that carries the reader through both novels quickly and in an entertaining fashion. The descriptions of the characters are vivid and the storyline isn’t one that is easily figured out. It is my suggestion that you must start with book one, in order to get the full effect that Ms. Garcia’s has crafted for her readers!

A Casual Conversation with Rose

The age of young adult writing has changed tremendously over the years.  Teens are more captivated with deeper in depth story lines that go beyond the classics we once knew.

Is there a classic that you will never forget and why?
"I’ve read a ton of books, both classic and modern, YA and non YA, and the two YA books that I emotionally go back to time and time again are The Giver and Enders Game. These books are alike in so many ways—they both feature a male protagonist, a bleak future, life and death situations, and difficult decision making. Another word that I’ve used to describe these books is heavy, both in mood and in subject matter. There’s something about pushing someone to their limits that pulls me into a story because I have to know if they’ll make it through their circumstances. In my own writing, I tend to follow this same formula of stripping someone down to their weakest point and placing them in a no-win situation. That’s when you find out who a person really is."

What point in your life did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?
"Writing has always been one of my passions and something that I’ve been doing from the time I was able to put pen to paper. I remember scribbling ideas, poems, and short stories from a very young age. But I really didn’t know that Iwanted to be a writer until I was a lot older. Even then, it was a desire those slowly grew inside of me. Now, I can’t imagine doing anything else!"

What do you find as an inspiration for your writing?
"EVERYTHING! An awesome movie, a cool song, the quirky neighbor at the end of the block, the guy I dated in high school, my kids and their friends.  You name it! My mind is constantly churning with ideas and story lines and settings. Sometimes I wonder how I sleep at night!"

What advice do you offer to young aspiring young writers?
"The most important thing you can do as an aspiring writer is to get connected with your local writing group. If there isn’t one near you, find an-online group. You’ll learn so much about the craft of writing, the industry, and your own writing. My second piece of advice is to sit down and write! I can’t tell you how many people tell me that they want to write a book, but they’ve never even started!  Get connected, start writing, and the rest will fall into place. =)
