Without a word, Matthew reached out, took Emily by the hand and pulled her down beside him. He looked into her eyes and smiled. “I knew my Emily was still in there.”

Out of the blue, the room became incredibly hot, as if Gabriel had entered in order to give a lesson to his favorite students. “What?”

“That spark.” He pulled Emily’s face closer before she could push herself away. “You’ve been acting all this time like you’re just here to sit and wait it out until you’re lucky enough to go Home. But you’re still in there, Emily. You still have all that energy and belief in there and you want to do something. That’s the partner I know.”

Shaking her head, Emily listened to her own breathing intensify as she stared at his full lips and wondered why she felt so completely and utterly strange...vulnerable even. “I want to help this girl. This is a job, maybe my only job down here. She saw a ghost and she wants me to help her out, that’s all.”

“And you will.” Matthew captured Emily’s lips, and she could no longer feel the breath in her lungs. Completely different than the one kiss they’d shared up above so long ago, this one was far more demanding, as if Matthew was a young man determined to kiss his human love for the very first time.

Sitting back, Emily practically jumped off the bed.

“I’m sorry,” she heard him whisper behind her. “I guess I was just excited to see you again.”

Not trusting her voice, she remained silent.

“We have jobs, but we also have a life to live. Our own lives this time around. Maybe you should think about adding that into your angelic plans.” Matthew continued softly, “Jason isn’t here, Emily.”

The name being said out loud sent a chill down Emily’s spine. It reminded her of the vow she’d made a long time ago—a vow that an angel couldn’t break.

She cleared her throat. “It doesn’t matter if he’s here. We were sent to do a job, and maybe helping this little girl prove her story is what I need to begin.”

Standing up, Matthew looked as if he was a man who wanted nothing more than to turn back the clock and erase the name he’d spoken aloud. He walked to the open window. “Well, I hope the job goes well. Good luck with it.”

“Matthew,” Emily took a step toward him. “Don’t leave like this.”

He nodded at the book on the bed. “You have your mission, Emily...your job. Ghosts, goblins, lost souls—knock yourself out.” He took a deep breath. “I wonder when you’re going to figure out that the living souls around you would like some of your attention as well.”

Closing her eyes, Emily shed silent tears as she heard his feet hit the ground beneath her window. A friend, a partner, the one who actually listened, was now just an angry young man racing back to The Armory—a place where warriors reigned.

Emily sighed. She’d done it again. No matter how hard she tried to be good, her mouth always got her into trouble. She needed Matthew to understand. She’d made a promise to a young man a long time ago; a promise that was supposed to last for eternity. How was she to know at the time that their eternity would include death by her hand? Had the second time around broken their vow? Emily had no idea. But whatever happened she could not and would not offer Matthew her heart if payment was still due for her past sins. Above all, Matthew was the last person who deserved to be punished for her mistakes.

Read Along Excerpt from Owlet by Emma Michaels

The young Iris faded away but her mother was still standing there, staring out at the trees as the sky turned dark. Iris wondered why she hadn’t faded into the mist, but was too scared to move. She tried to see her face. She just kept thinking about what that face might look like, all of the possible ways it could be different or similar to her father’s sketch. Finally she heard her whisper, “Caleb...what have you done?”

Her mother turned towards her, her face angled beautifully against the currently setting sun, and the feathers stopped falling, suspended in midair. “Iris, I love you.”

“Mom, why can’t I remember you?”

“You never needed to my dear.”

“Yes. I did.”

“No, you didn’t. What you need to remember is yourself.”

“But I want to remember you. Can’t I have both?”

“If you remember yourself, you will remember me. I am always a part of you. I am your mother.”

Iris stood there for a few minutes watching her mother’s face trying to memorize every detail. Her mother was frozen in time now, just like the still unmoving feathers. “I am scared.”

“I am too, Izzy, but I love you. Always know that.” Her mother came to life one more time, leaving her frozen state, to say the words Iris longed to hear. But as the image faded from sight, Iris dropped to her knees...alone once again.

After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.

If you want to read a story that is poetic, then Owlet is for you. Emma does a wonderful job creating this tale. Owlet brings romance to the forefront while presenting us with a new kind of being/idea. I think my favorite parts are when avian reference are used in a romantic way. You have to read, to see what I am referring to. The pacing of Owlet might be a tad slow for some readers while others might say its just perfect. I'm not a big fan of poems, but the ones in Owlet were great. 

Owlet is a story to keep you wondering and learning new discoveries. You meet Iris, who is kept pretty much locked away from everything. Her father is overbearing & protects her to the extreme. Iris is completely naive from the past, present and future. Then add to that she has asthma. So what happen when her father decided its time for a big change to protect Iris and her health and of course secrets. They move to an island. This move will pretty much blow up in their faces. SO much will be revealed and Iris will have her eyes open for the firs time to everything that has been kept from her for a long time. Did I mention a certain person called Falcon? Well he might cause your hearts to speed up once or twice. Iris would probably agree with that. 

Emma created a great beginning in this new series. Owlet will deliver suspense and have you guessing or trying to figure out the secrets and who Iris is. Now the wait for the sequel to find out more about Iris and the Society of Feathers

Drew Parrish was freezing. It was late May in New York City but the bitter winds made it seem more like Christmas lights should be burning in the windows.

He walked down the avenue quickly, thanking the heavens that the horrible ache in his chest was finally beginning to subside. Talk about an awful night. He’d felt like he was an eighty-year-old man when the pain had come, not his usual, energetic seventeen- year-old self. Drew could swear, thinking back on the delusional evening, that for a second he’d felt his heart stop beating completely. Thankfully, it must have been a nightmare, seeing as that he was now heading to work on this strangely bitter day to a place that had once changed his entire life.

As he walked toward Battery Park, Drew looked over his shoulder at the city he now called home. His brain felt so strange—clouded over. His stomach felt as if his soul was on fire as he began to walk through his memories, recalling everything he could about his life.

He’d been here ever since his tenth birthday, and in the past seven years he’d found, for the most part, that he loved being an American. But that certainly wasn’t how it started...

It seemed like a million years ago when he and his father had left their beloved Ireland behind to make the long, hard journey on that horrible boat. Surrounded by other lost souls escaping the Great Famine and British domination over their land and lives, Drew remembered being scared to death when the medical inspector on Ellis Island had pulled his father out of the long line. The cold stranger had used a buttonhook to turn up his father’s eyelids and, seconds later, had led his father away from the flow of immigrants. With a piece of white chalk the medical man had marked his father’s forehead with the giant letter E.

So…You Want the Inside ‘Skinny’ on the Warrior? Here Goes…

Hi, I’m Emily. I’m the angel part of this angel/warrior team. And I have to say, when I talk to our creator (no, I mean the writer, not our Creator, creator) I’m always amazed by how many females - and we’re taking teens to grandmothers - want to know about Matthew because they think he’s so great. Well…here are some things you don’t know.

Matthew needs to shower more, especially after we fight in Gabriel’s pit. Even though we’re talking about Heaven, we are still talking about a soul who’s in need of soap and water to make his scent livable again.

Matthew is also a questioner. Now, I know that you would think I would be, considering the fact that I do it a lot in our stories, but Matthew is the really annoying one. Sometimes he’ll hold his head up, turn his neck back and forth so fast it’s like he’s found something odd to smoke in St. Francis’ field, and he’ll start asking about everything. When he sees a new animal, a new piece of technology, a new wardrobe choice that Mark makes (even though Mark likes the tuxedo the best, he tries on a lot of different outfits), Matthew has to know all about it. He also asks Michael all about the ins and outs of thoughts, magic, reading minds, teleportation - which I still don’t think will ever be invented but, whatever. He even got into this kick recently where he wanted to know about vampires. I’m sure it’s because the library suddenly became full of books about ‘fanged’ creatures, but Matthew wanted the lowdown on whether or not they were real. Turns out, they… Sorry, I forgot, I’m not supposed to give anything away.

Matthew also likes to fight. He’s always throwing himself into the pit to go against Gabe, our teacher. He loves all the swords and shields, and all the ‘ancient’ weapons the best. I think he wants to be King Arthur, or something. But I told him that already happened so he was out of luck.

But…I suppose he learns a lot. His questions and his battles have made him just about the best at this ‘business’ as anyone could possibly be. And the people he’s helped and the jobs he’s done made him the biggest-hearted person I’ve ever met. And, yes…I suppose he’s handsome, if you like that sweet/oddly rugged warrior thing and the bright blue eyes. Well…I’ll give him that one…the eyes are amazing. Anyone can be drawn into those eyes in seconds.

The loyalty and honesty he has are large benefits too, you could say. He is so loyal to his job, his friends, his decisions and…to me. I know people got mad at me in our first life when Jason became my first love, but I really don’t have any idea about soul mates. I mean, we’re taught about them all the time, but I’m still trying to figure out how it would be possible to have two?

Anyway…yes, Matthew is a hero. And, yes, he’s definitely the guy you want on your side. But you may want to bring duct tape with you or have one of those iPod things so that you can put it in you ear and drown him out after a while.

Oh, and in Gilded Wings, Matthew becomes even more of a warrior than what you…or I, thought he was.

Kathy Leonard Czepiel is the recipient of a creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and teaches writing at Quinnipiac University. Her short fiction has been published in numerous journals including Cimarron Review, Indiana Review, Calyx, Confrontation, and The Pinch. A native of New York State’s mid-Hudson Valley, she now lives in Connecticut with her husband and two children.

OUaT: What attracted you to write historical romance?

I didn’t set out to write in a particular genre. What I was really drawn to was writing about the lost violet-growing industry in the area where I grew up, the beautiful Mid-Hudson River Valley. The violet industry was booming at the turn of the 20th century, so my novel had to be historical. As for romance, every good novel should include a love story, right?

OUaT: Is there a favorite time period you would be interested in traveling back in time to, if you could?

I think life is pretty good for us today, so I wouldn’t want to live in another time! But I would love to be invited to a lavish 19th-century party in Newport or stop over in the 1930s to go swing dancing to the great big bands, especially the Duke Ellington orchestra.

OUaT: How much research went into or goes into writing historical novels?

I did a lot of research for A Violet Season. Not much has been written about violet farming, so I went straight to the source. I visited a farmer in the Hudson Valley whose family used to grow violets and who still grows one bed of them himself, though his business is now in anemones and Christmas trees. I also relied on a lot of old newspaper clippings and an oral history for details about the violets. I consulted about fifty major sources while writing the novel. That doesn’t include all the quick little online searches I did to pick up a detail here or there. It’s important for a writer of historical fiction to know a lot more than what ends up in the novel. In reading a lot of sources, you pick up on the flavor, the mood, the tone of the period as well as lots of little details that lend authenticity to the story, a sense of how people spoke, how they behaved in public, what their values were, and so on.

OUaT: When the idea of A Violet Season came to you, did you know you would have a message in your story for the readers to capture?

I didn’t have a particular message in mind, though at different times I thought I was writing a novel about forgiveness, or about preserving a lost piece of my hometown’s history, or about women’s work. One of the great things about any text is that every reader takes something a little bit different from it, based on her own experiences and her own view of the world. I would be interested to hear what my readers think the message of the novel is, since I’m sure their answers would all be different!

OUaT: Tell us about current work or future ideas?

I’m working on my second novel, which is set in 1929 and post-World War II. This one was inspired by the story of the building of my grandparents’ house, but of course it is taking on a life of its own. I’m thinking I need to work in some swing dancing, too!

Before I begin this review, I want to make everyone aware of Tribute Books. They publish eBooks for independent writers, mostly YA genre. Night Sky is one of few books I have read in the male POV. Its takes a bit of getting used to when stories our told from the guy's side. So many YA or even adult books are purely female pov's and you get used to that, so I guess it is a bit refreshing to read it from the other side. That being said though, you connect with Jameson in Night Sky. Jolene wrote him so that he was very believable and easy to follow as a character. Jolene does a great job creating Jameson and showing us in words how he transforms or matures up. Pretty much every single character in Night Sky, is well written and balanced out with one another. They read like real people who you can possibly know in real life. 

So we have Jameson, he is 18 years old and completely head over heals in love with Sarah. I think we all knew a boy or two that felt lie that for us in school. He has been for as long as he can remember. He is that guy that is soooo in love that he sort of acts like her personal puppy dog, he helps her with anything she might need or want. Their friendship is very strong but Jameson just looks on to the future and hopes any days now she will finally come around and becomes his. Ha! Not the easy folks. Sarah finds someone else and its definitely not Jameson. This crushes him so deep, his world pretty much feels like it ends. Now don't give up on poor Jameson, one day he runs into Sky. Sky intrigues him like Sarah never did. He will now face a battle of feelings between what he has always felt for Sarah and what is brewing inside now for the wild Sky. All this begins to take off during certain events in his life that he is deep in the middle off and will have to deal with as well. 

If you are in a mood to read a coming of age story about love and life, then read Night Sky. Jolene's voice in Night Sky will warm everyone's heart. Now if your looking for a super intense non-stop action read then Night Sky is not for you, but I bet if you read it you'll be surprised how much you'll like it.
