Book Review: Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

Autoboyography

Author: Christina Lauren
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: September 12th 2017

Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community.

Three years ago, Tanner Scott’s family relocated from California to Utah, a move that nudged the bisexual teen temporarily back into the closet. Now, with one semester of high school to go, and no obstacles between him and out-of-state college freedom, Tanner plans to coast through his remaining classes and clear out of Utah.

But when his best friend Autumn dares him to take Provo High’s prestigious Seminar—where honor roll students diligently toil to draft a book in a semester—Tanner can’t resist going against his better judgment and having a go, if only to prove to Autumn how silly the whole thing is. Writing a book in four months sounds simple. Four months is an eternity.

It turns out, Tanner is only partly right: four months is a long time. After all, it takes only one second for him to notice Sebastian Brother, the Mormon prodigy who sold his own Seminar novel the year before and who now mentors the class. And it takes less than a month for Tanner to fall completely in love with him.

This book may be the hardest book I’m going to review this year. I was completely enamored by the story and I don’t think my review will ever do it justice and honestly I wholeheartedly believe this is Christina Laurens best work yet. Autoboyography was a book my soul was looking for and didn’t even know until it landed right in my lap. It delicately tackles a relationship that is frowned upon in the eyes of one of the boy’s faith and the personal struggle of accepting and loving oneself as we are. And they do it without demonizing the faith and they made both the boy’s battle true and raw.

Autoboyography is told through Tanner’s perspective. He had moved from California to Utah, he was proudly out to his friends and family as bisexual in California but since he is now living in a town that is primarily Mormon he’s kept his sexuality within the walls of his own home. Not even his best friend Autumn knows. So when she dares Tanner to take a writing class next semester she has no idea what she is about to get Tanner into, nor does Tanner. In walks Sebastian, a mentor for this years writing class and from the very first look Tanner is hooked. He can’t keep his eyes off him and can’t help himself for social media stalking him later. Tanner is crushing hard on Sebastian, the Bishop's son, and we soon find out that the crush isn’t one sided, but with Sebastian’s involvement and faithfulness with the LDS church makes things a bit confusing.

So as you can see Christina Lauren set themselves up with a challenge and executed it perfectly. They gave us all perfect swoony moments they are so perfect at but gave us a raw story that tackles someone’s inner battle of what’s right and wrong. What they feel in their heart is right but everyone around them is telling them it’s wrong. It tackles a religion that sees something as wrong but doesn’t blame or demonize their followers, questions the church as a whole, not necessarily its followers. Not only does Sebastian have challenges he overcomes but Tanner as well. I wish I could adequately express how much this book meant to me but I’m not a writer and unfortunately can’t compute what my brain wants to say to my fingertips. Hands down in my opinion Christina Lauren’s best work to date. This will definitely be a book that I will shove into everyone’s hands and tell them they need to read it. It was a book I didn’t know I was looking for but thank God it found me!

Book Review: A Map for Wrecked Girls by Jessica Taylor

Author: Jessica Taylor
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: August 15th 2017
Review Source: Dial Books

We sat at the edge of the ocean—my sister Henri and I—inches apart but not touching at all. We'd been so sure someone would find us by now.

Emma had always orbited Henri, her fierce, magnetic queen bee of an older sister, and the two had always been best friends. Until something happened that wrecked them.

I'd trusted Henri more than I'd trusted myself. Wherever she told me to go, I'd follow.

Then the unthinkable occurs—a watery nightmare off the dazzling coast. The girls wash up on shore, stranded. Their only companion is Alex, a troubled boy agonizing over his own secrets. Trapped in this gorgeous hell, Emma and Alex fall together as Emma and Henri fall catastrophically apart.

For the first time, I was afraid we'd die on this shore.

To find their way home, the sisters must find their way back to each other. But there’s no map for this—or anything. Can they survive the unearthing of the past and the upheaval of the present?

A Map For Wrecked Girls is told in the past and present. I'm not really a fan of those, I don't like the back and forth but for this novel I happily enjoyed finding out about things that happened in the past.

First of all A Map For Wrecked Girls is everything I'm afraid of happening to me, getting on a boat and getting stranded. This is what happens to Em and her sister and Alex. Their boat malfunctions and they swim to an island, From then on they have to rely on each other and try their best to survive. Surviving isn't always easy especially if their at odds with each other but it was interesting to read about the dynamics between these three characters.

I won't say much about this book because I feel like you need to read it to enjoy it just as much as I did and to understand why Henry and Em have a rocky past and how and IF they survive this island.

Jessica Taylor debut novel is like a thriller movie, you don't know if anyone will survive, you're holding your breath waiting to see what happens next and then some secrets and comic relief are thrown in and by the time it's nightfall you're wondering how you finished this book so fast. I definitely recommend this book and I hope you buy it asap.

Sensuality Level: Behind Closed Doors

EXCERPT:

The AES machine flashed across the finish line as the starter waved the green flag, the prismatic paint job displaying every color of the spectrum.
“God, she’s beautiful.” The moment Brad had uttered the words, he realized he wasn’t sure if he was referring to the car or its driver. He was happy he didn’t have his microphone on, though.
A video feed of Gabrielle’s progress was in a corner of his computer screen. As she barreled down the long backstretch, which was five-eighths of a mile in length all by itself, he checked her speed. She was zooming at over two hundred miles per hour.
At Gabrielle’s request, the team had disconnected her speedometer. Brad was to report her speed when she finished the first lap and again when she completed the attempt. He was to say nothing else.
Brad held his breath as she flew down the front straight, the song of the turbocharged engine sweeter than an opera singer, and completed lap one. Her speed flashed on the screen. It was all Brad could do to keep from shouting.
“Two hundred point thirteen. Everything looks great.”
The first lap was pole-winning speed.
Down the backstretch and into turn three, the line Gabrielle took was as smooth as soft-serve ice cream. Exiting turn four, she drifted up so close to the white concrete retaining wall, Brad flinched and closed one eye for a moment.
The close call didn’t slow her down, though. She took the checkered flag, completing the run with a two-lap average of 200.2 miles per hour.
“Congrats, Gabrielle, you just set a Continental Series track record.”
“Yes!” Her shout almost burst Brad’s eardrums.
Scott gave Brad a thumbs-up but pointed at the scoring pylon. There were two cars left to make their qualifying attempts. One of them was Chas.
By the time Gabrielle was out of the car and had her helmet off, the number seventy-seven had the first lap in the books at just under 199 miles per hour. He was no threat. The team gathered around her to wait for Chas to make his attempt.
Brad gave Gabrielle a fist bump, but nothing more. He didn’t want to jinx anything.
The Thornton Industries machine looked fast as it took the green flag. Brad reached out and took Gabrielle’s hand. A pleasant tingling sensation went up his arm when they touched. She didn’t pull away. Rather, she held on. It was a perfect fit.
Nobody said anything as Chas came into view coming out of turn four. Brad kept his focus on the scoring pylon as their rival completed lap one.
199.96.
Gabrielle loosened her grip a touch as the group let out a collective sigh of relief. Chas wasn’t far off Gabrielle’s time, but catching her could be a tall order. It was an order he couldn’t deliver. His second lap was a tick over two hundred miles per hour.
Gabrielle was on the pole.
For the most important race of the season.
At the most historic racing venue on Earth.
Amid a cacophony of whoops and shouts of elation, Brad took Gabrielle by the shoulders.
“You did it.” At that moment, someone bumped him into Gabrielle, which brought his lips to hers. The moment they made contact, fireworks went off. Brad wasn’t sure if they were real or imagined, but he didn’t care. Kissing the woman in his arms was electrifying.
Her lips were soft, with a hint of blueberry from her lip balm. His thumb stroked her cheek and wiped away a tear. All too soon, she pulled back. He opened his eyes to find her red-cheeked but smiling from ear to ear. He recovered his senses enough to take her wrist and raise her arm.
“Presenting your pole winner for the Memorial One Hundred, Gabrielle Marquez.”

Book Review: Lucky in Love by Kasie West

Lucky in Love

Released: July 25th 2017

Maddie doesn't believe in luck. She's all about hard work and planning ahead. But one night, on a whim, she buys a lottery ticket. And then, to her astonishment --

She wins!

In a flash, Maddie's life is unrecognizable. No more stressing about college scholarships. Suddenly, she's talking about renting a yacht. And being in the spotlight at school is fun... until rumors start flying, and random people ask her for loans. Now, Maddie isn't sure who she can trust.

Except for Seth Nguyen, her funny, charming coworker at the local zoo. Seth doesn't seem aware of Maddie's big news. And, for some reason, she doesn't want to tell him. But what will happen if he learns her secret?

Kasie West is easily one of my favorite YA authors. Everytime I read one her books I get lost and won’t get up for anything until I’m finished. It pains me more than anything to say Lucky in Love wasn’t one of those times. While I did still enjoy it and most definitely had everything I love in a contemporary YA, it just wasn’t my favorite. Which is bound to happen when I fall so deeply for each and every one of her books.

Maddie is gearing up for graduation and waiting for her college acceptance letters to be coming any day now. She has spent her whole life trying to get to this point in her life. She had to get the grades so she could get the scholarships or else she wouldn’t be able to afford to go. Her father lost his job and was having a hard time finding a new one, her brother was even taking time off from school to save up and then return, and she kept her sights on colleges nearby because of issues in her family that she couldn’t help but try to fix. So on one not so great 18th birthday, Maddie goes to the convenience store to indulge in her sweet tooth when the store clerk convinced her to buy a lottery ticket. Maddie knows the odds, she knows a lot of random facts, but she went with it anyways. And low and behold she won! She was now a millionaire, she was able to afford college, help her parents out, and her brother. Her problems were officially solved, or were they?

Maddie was now in the limelight, everyone knew about her winnings, except for her crush Seth, who has been grounded from the internet and phone and would’ve missed all the news about a town local winning. She finds out after winning the lottery it becomes hard to find out who she can trust and since Seth doesn’t know she starts to open up more to now then she had in the past. Which starts to blossom their relationship.

As I stated this wasn’t exactly my favorite Kasie West book and I’m not really sure where it went wrong for me. I don’t think I swooned for Seth as much as I would’ve loved to. Or maybe I’m just jealous I haven’t won the lottery yet, but it was just something and I don’t know where this book fell short with me. Again though, I did enjoy it, I loved seeing how someone would navigate winning the lottery, especially in high school where she flew under the radar until her winnings. There were times I just shook my head and said “girlllll I wouldn’t do that” and times I would’ve splurged just like her. It was cute and though I didn’t swoon for Seth, I did really like him, he had some good quips in there that I loved and wanted more of.

Nonetheless Kasie West is and always will be an autobuy author for me. I’ll never get enough of her writing. She is, in my opinion, one of the best contemporary YA authors out there. She never fails at getting me out of a reading slump and making me fall in love all over again.

Grace wants out. Out of her house, where her stepfather wields fear like a weapon and her mother makes her scrub imaginary dirt off the floors. Out of her California town, too small to contain her big city dreams. Out of her life, and into the role of Parisian artist, New York director—anything but scared and alone.

Enter Gavin: charming, talented, adored. Controlling. Dangerous. When Grace and Gavin fall in love, Grace is sure it's too good to be true. She has no idea their relationship will become a prison she's unable to escape.

Deeply affecting and unflinchingly honest, this is a story about spiraling into darkness—and emerging into the light again.

(Trigger warnings: Mental and physical abuse.)

I knew going into Bad Romance that this was going to crush me. Many people write about abuse just to use it as a plot device but when someone really takes the time or has experienced abuse then they know that this is a very sensitive matter and should be handled with care.

Bad Romance is about a girl who wants to graduate school and leave her life behind to start her career in theater. She has these awesome plans but when she meets Gavin, everything falls apart.

It's hard to get out of a bad relationship and sometimes you don't even know you're in one. Grace didn't know she was in a toxic relationship until Gavin started showing signs of jealousy and stalking her and telling her to stop talking to guys. It was hard for Grace because not only did she love him but Gavin was like a savior to her when things at home weren't good. So at first Grace would forgive Gavin but when it became too much she stood her ground.

Bad Romance tells the story of a girl falling in love, it shows us the signs of how that love can turn hateful, and how when you're at your lowest you can slowly rise up and be the best you that you can be with the support of friends and mainly with the courage and bravery you have in yourself.

Blog Tour: Once and for All by Sarah Dessen + Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on Once and for All tour for Sarah Dessen. This tour is hosted by PenguinTeen.

Once and for All
Author: Sarah Dessen
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: June 6th 2017

Louna has spent her high school years working at her mother's successful wedding planning business. She's seen every sort of wedding: big and lavish, small and intimate, at country clubs or on the beach. She's dealt with every crisis that can bedevil a wedding—as well as scene-stealing bridesmaids, controlling grooms, bossy mothers-of-the-bride, and even the occasional AWOL bride. Her view of the non-everlasting nature of love has been colored by the cynicism of her mother, who enjoys laying odds on how long each marriage will last. And Louna's own experience has made her wary: her blissful first love, seen in intermittent flashbacks, ended in tragic loss. When handsome, charming, scatterbrained Ambrose comes to work for her mother, Louna is indignant at the number of women he juggles; he is appalled by her refusal to socialize at all. They make a bet: Louna will go on a series of dates while Ambrose will attempt a long-term relationship with one woman. But in the end, it is Ambrose himself that Louna falls for—exactly what Ambrose intended!

Sarah Dessen is an instant favorite. Every book I read I fall more in love with her work and just wish I could absorb all of them right away, but then on the other hand I don’t want to read them all at once because then waiting for a new one will be pure torture. Pace yourself Shannon, pace yourself. Once and for All follows a young girl, Louna, who works with her mother as a wedding planner, she runs into crying brides questioning true love, serial daters who are holding up their mother's wedding to flirt, avoiding dancing with guests, and just about everything else inbetween. So how does one who helps plan a day that is meant to say we’re in this together forever not believe in true love?

Louna from the very beginning questions the reality of true love and throughout this story you get pieces of her past that help put in perspective why she may question this. Her past was hard, I cried when we got the final piece, and can totally understand why this girl has a hard time letting it go. Then she meets Ambrose, our serial dater, who was holding up his own mother’s wedding to flirt with a girl, maybe not the best first impression but we all are due a second chance. Ambrose actually begins to question his morals after meeting Louna, but it takes awhile for Louna to see what’s in front of her all this time.

I won’t lie to you though my favorite part, or parts, was getting to see the small things and people from previous Sarah Dessen novels pop up here and there. And then have them be the ones I literally just read, it was the best, almost fate, if you believe in that kind of stuff. Then we have Ambrose, my dog saver, who just couldn’t leave a dog in the hands of an awful owner, I know theft is bad, but when you’re saving a dog from an abusive owner I am all game for you to steal it, or what I would say, rescue it. I fell for Ambrose that instant. There’s one thing you can always count on when you read a Dessen novel and that’s authentic characters, authentic flaws, and real growth. In Once and for All you saw growth with every character in it, Ambrose, her mother Natalie, her business partner William, Louna’s best friend, and then Louna herself. And that’s what I just love about reading a Dessen book, it all feels so real, I get so emerged in the story I can’t look away. I can’t wait to know more about our characters and dive further into their lives and their stories.

Book Review: When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

When Dimple Met Rishi
Author: Sandhya Menin
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: May 30th 2017
Review Source: Simon Pulse

A laugh-out-loud, heartfelt YA romantic comedy, told in alternating perspectives, about two Indian-American teens whose parents have arranged for them to be married.

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

When Dimple Met Rishi is hands down my favorite book in 2017 so far. It has everything a great YA novel should have, swoon worthy moments, family values, smart chicks, and witty banter. Rishi is prideful in his Indian family values, he believes in arranged marriages and wants to please and make his parents proud. Dimple not so much... She doesn’t have marriage or even finding a life partner in the forefront of her mind. She has her studies, her career, and insomnia con to worry about. Her mom is always pressuring her to wear makeup, dress nicer, find herself a good Indian boy to marry, but that’s the least of her worries at 18.

When Dimple’s parents reluctantly let her go to a summer program, Insomnia Con, a six week program where she comes up and codes an app and the winner gets to met her idol, she is thrilled. Little does she know Rishi is sent there as well, but not to compete but to find his future arranged wife, Dimple. The best part, neither of them know about each other, well Rishi knows about Dimple and has seen her picture, but he doesn’t know that she is clueless about the arrangement and Dimple is completely clueless on everything. From the very first time they meet it becomes a hilarious tale. I seriously could not get enough of these two.

Like I stated before, When Dimple Met Rishi is hands down my favorite book this year. I loved how focused and determined Dimple is when it comes to her future, her studies, and making this app that would help the lives of many, especially her father. Then there’s Rishi whose values his family and their traditions. I loved learning more about their culture and having Hindi involved in the text as well. Then there’s the best dialogue between the two as well, witty, funny, and just perfect. This book was just perfect. I cannot express it enough on how much I loved this book. From the perfect cover art to the perfect story, everything. I don’t know if you can tell but I loved this book and I’ll never be able to completely express myself on the matter, but I do know this will be a reread for sure in the future.
