The Nature of Grace #2
Author: S.R. Johannes
Reading Level: YA
Genre: Murder Mystery
Released: September 24th 2012
Review Source: Author
Summary: (from goodreads) As Grace recovers from tragedy, her science class is chosen by Agent Sweeney at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to help with research on the new "Red Wolf Reintroduction Program".

While she’s excited about helping with the conservation of the endangered wolves, Grace knows this means being outdoors in the worst winter recorded, in a place she no longer feels comfortable. It also means working closely with Wyn (her ex) and his annoying girlfriend (Skyler), a girl whose idea of getting close to nature is picking silk plants and growing fake plants.

After a couple of wolves show up dead, Grace almost quits. However, when a fellow project team member goes missing, Grace continues the assignment under a renewed suspicion that someone might be sabotaging the conservation program. She quietly begins to hunt for clues.

Little does she know, she is being hunted too.

First I want to say, immediately, that I loved this story! Next, that I came at this book with a slight disadvantage because I was reading it to write a review, so I hadn't heard of or read book one. A situation which I will quickly remedy. Although this novel can easily stand on its own, I think I will enjoy the insight into all the great characters I will get from reading the first book.

The story is set in small town North Carolina and follows Grace who is a strong, independent outdoorsy kinda girl who doesn't let much stop her once her mind is set on something. When the book opens she is recovering from the tragic loss of her father, whose killer is still at large, and the betrayal of close family friends. She is also reeling from the fact that the small town residents seem to have shifted the blame for the tragedy on her. But even worse than being ostracized by the town is the fact that her best friend Wyn hasn't spoken to her for the entire 3 months since the death of her father and Mo, a teenager who seemingly lost his life trying to protect her father. Wyn harbors unrequited feelings for Grace and is still angry about the relationship she had with Mo. The one constant is Grace's life is her quirky, lovable grandmother that everyone calls Birddie.

Agent Sweeny of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the very same agent that had been working on the case that took the life of her father, is looking for a team of teenagers to volunteer on the Red Wolf Reintroduction Program. This program is set up to track the movements of the tagged and almost extinct wolves before the harsh winter storms make tracking the wolves impossible. The information they document will determine if the wolves will stay in the North Carolina mountains or if they will be moved to another protected area. But more than the wolves survival may depend on the information they are set to gather. Big business seems to have a lot of money invested in the same property that is now home to the wolves.

The very mountains that have always brought Grace peace, seem to hold danger at every turn. As Grace continues with the conservation project she struggles to handle Wyn's attitude, Skyler's (Wyn's girlfriend) inept outdoor abilities and the threat of Al (her fathers murderer) all while battling the harsh winter elements that can take your life if caught unprepared. Now add to Grace's plate that the wolves are dying. One by one with no immediate signs of foul play.

As this thrilling, suspenseful book unfolds you are drawn into and feel invested in every twist and turn that the author, S R Johannes, takes us on. The writing is witty and passionate. All the characters, even the support characters, are so well written that the story flows as if you have known all these people your life. The descriptions leave you racing to turn the page and the love triangle is awkwardly endearing. This is a wonderful engaging story that I highly encourage you to read.
