The drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver re-teams with the mercurial Alejandro.
A few years ago, I did the review for the first part of this series and I enjoyed it very much. So, when I was asked to go watch the screening for the second part, I didn't hesitate. I have to say that it was an overall good movie, but it had some parts that confused me. There's a lot of stuff going on at once, but I also am hard of hearing so there were parts I missed what was being said, and that completely threw me off.

With that said, I will comment about my opinion on the movie. I did like it, it's action packed and I always enjoy watching Benicio del Toro being the amazing actor that he is. In this movie, we learn a little bit more about his past and about him as a person, for he is so mysterious in the previous movie. He is, as per usual, a badass, but a badass that gets into a bit of trouble without even realizing it. I am not going to say anything more than that.

Isabela Moner I had the pleasure of meeting her year ago while doing press tour for Transformers: The Last Knight and she also stars in this film. I have to say that I loved her acting in this movie, she plays feisty and sassy well! But she is the girl who gets kidnapped and the way she deals with the trauma is very accurate. At the end of the movie, I kept thinking "she is going to need a lot of therapy" (just getting kidnapped alone is pretty traumatizing) and wondering how she could ever deal with it all (can you tell I am a mental health therapist during the day?). My point is, Isabela did a really good job with her performance in this movie, and I hope this opens even more doors for her in the future.

Me with Isabela Moner when I met her a year ago

Josh Brolin...what can we say about this guy other than plain badass? He is funny, confident, smart, and an amazing soldier in this movie. He's also Thanos and Cable, but that's in another universe, but still pretty intimidating. His character gets put into a few pickles and he has to figure out what to do very quickly and very intelligently -and he does just that, beautifully. He too is a great actor and is the one who gives a few laughs throughout the movie.

I missed Emily Blunt, though.

This movie shows us another big issue in Mexico: the crossing of the border, and how those poor people just wanting a better life get exploited and treated, as they say in the movie, like "lambs". By that, I mean not very nicely. It's a sad reality that many of us don't know what it feels like to live that, and that you don't know how bad it is until something like this is shown to us. The focus of this part of the story is on this one kid who is about 16 years old and how he gets involved in this illegal business and how it transforms him. My favorite, though, was the very last scene of the movie.

As the synopsis of the movie says, there are some terrorists being sent over through the borders and they all have bombs. It was actually very scary seeing those scenes in which the terrorists blow everything up because of the places it happened in, how it happened, and it's plain scary. I say this because, unfortunately, these are things that are really happening in our country all the time, and it is scary to think you can be at a mall, grocery store, pharmacy, etc. and that all of a sudden, some idiot decides they have more rights over our lives than us and blows the place up. Not going to lie, I was starting to get anxiety while watching this movie.

Despite that, it is actually a good movie with an adequate amount of action, talking, and events happening. You do have to pay attention to a lot of the details because they are all important to the plot...Makes you wonder if there will be a continuation of the storyline...

In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman.

In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent [Emily Blunt] is enlisted by an elite government task force official [Josh Brolin] to aid in the escalating war against drugs.

Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

A Lionsgate presentation, a Black Label Media presentation, a Thunder Road production, a Denis Villeneuve film.

I was very excited to go see Sicario because, not only is it more up my alley, but it also has two of the most badasses ever: Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro (one of my favorite actors). Let me start by saying that their performances did NOT disappoint! Especially Benicio's! His acting was superb and he made you believe so many different things, just to throw you a curve ball in the end. That's what makes him such an amazing actor (and I have a weak spot for him because he is in my most favorite movie: Snatch!). Emily was also great; she made you feel all of her feels. Her accent was pretty good, but I felt they gave her very few lines -especially for being one of the main characters! Maybe because her accent needs more perfection? Not sure, because, what I got to hear, was pretty darn American! All the other actors did a good job too!

Now let's talk about the editing: it was a little choppy in some parts. It felt like they were jumping from one scene to the next instead of it having a smooth transition. The effects were pretty good, although not a whole lot were needed believe it or not. The filming style isn't for everyone, for it sometimes is not the smooth, still camera we are more used to. In some of the scenes it seems like the person was walking as they were recording, but I liked they way it was done (not as jumpy as The Blair Witch Project) because it made me feel like I was there with them, going through what they were going through.

And now the best part: the plot! As you read above in the studio given summary of the movie, you can see they speak about corruption. This, of course, is nothing new in the world of the FBI (or CIA or any government branch really) movie plots, but the way they presented it and the way it all was discovered was pretty out of the left field. They really fool you more than once! I felt bad for Kate (Emily Blunt) because she was constantly put between a rock and a hard place since she was a good, moralistic person. I was able to identify with her (and if you know me, you know that I'd be just like her) because she is one of those that wants to really make a difference but sometimes has to make tough choices that make her go against her morality (and who hasn't been there, right?). My only complaint about Kate, honestly, is that I guess I am used to seeing Emily play SUCH badass take-no-one's-crap kind of characters, and in this movie she was a watered down version of that. But, I understand you can't play the same character all the time ;)

Overall, I liked the movie. It kept me intrigued and it shows something that is a true reality for some people. With that said, I will let you all know that this is not for the faint of heart or for those that get easily upset with graphic and gory scenes. There are quite a few horrific things shown that not everyone will be able to tolerate. Just bare in mind: it's about the drug cartel, that should tell you enough! If you're ok with all these types of scenes, like I am, then definitely go check it out!
