Decades after her original visit, the magical nanny returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Mary Poppins, like so many others of my generation. We grew up watching this amazing magical woman who took us on adventures inside paintings and dancing on rooftops. She taught us how to be politer, that being kind goes a long way, and that if you sing to birds, they sing with you. I used to watch that movie almost every day, sometimes more than once a day. So, imagine my excitement when I was asked to assist the screening for Mary Poppins Returns and write a review about it. I didn’t even blink when I said yes.

I won’t lie, I did not have many expectations for it, I wanted to remain neutral just in case. You know how it is, they make a part two (or reboot) and they change a bunch of things or make it feel like it’s not really part of the same world as part one was. So, I decided to remain neutral and just see how it went. It was great being back in the Banks home and seeing Jane and Michael grown up (the actors really do look like the adult version of the kids we saw in the original Mary Poppins movie many moons ago), but seeing Emily Blunt fly in on a kite (the one Michael had flown as a kid with his dad) dressed as Mary Poppins put a big smile on my face for she looked the part so much it didn’t even feel like it was a different actress. Then she walks into the same house she had done in the first movie and starts to check the dust on the furniture and give everyone a very judging look. At this, I was transported back to being an eight-year-old child and I couldn’t hide my excitement for the rest of the movie. It really felt like a continuation of the original story; it didn’t feel forced or like they tried too hard. It was flawless.

Let me start with Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins. I absolutely love Emily, and I have done so for many years. When I heard she was John Krasinski’s wife, I knew she had to be someone awesome to be married to such an awesome man (back then I knew more about him than her). Then I’ve seen her in several movies and interviews of her, and I fell more in love. Now she played one of the most iconic and loved characters and she did it beautifully and perfectly. She really captured Julie Andrews’ essence and put some of her own into the loved nanny. It made my little heart so happy every time she said “Pish Posh”. I wouldn’t mind a part three with her and just show us another family. Just please bring her back!

Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Jack, who is supposed to be one of the kids that helped Bert clean chimneys. He remembers Mary Poppins and is who takes over the role of the friend of Mary’s who sort of tells the children about Mary Poppins and to not question her much. His role was of a sweet man who was caring and nice to the kids, but is also who steals the show about halfway through the movie with a whole solo song and dance that was just funny and stupendous. The beloved penguins from the first movie come out during his song and are as adorable as ever. I also like that they had him be a little flirty with Jane.

Then there’s a spectacular appearance by Meryl Streep and another surprise (don’t want to spoil it). I love Meryl Streep too and she did a great job and her song is one of the most fun in the movie. Colin Firth as a bad guy is one of my favorite things for I feel he does it so well. He captures you with his charm and charisma then stabs you in the back in the most elegant way.

I loved all the attention to detail they put into the movie: Emily Blunt wears the same apron Julie Andrews did, their attire when they go into the porcelain bowl: their clothes looked as if painted and when they walked you would hear as if they were tapping on porcelain for real, the choreography towards the end was awesome, I really loved it.

In conclusion, I absolutely loved the movie and I would highly recommend it to every one of every age, especially if you grew up watching the original. As per usual, there are some critics out there hating on the movie, but that’s what I call a muggle. Hope you guys go watch it and enjoy it as much as I did.

PAULA HAWKINS

"Nothing is more addicting than The Girl on the Train." — Vanity Fair

The Girl on the Train has more fun with unreliable narration than any chiller since Gone Girl The Girl on the Train has Gone Girl-type fun with unreliable spouses, too. The Girl on the Train is liable to draw a large, bedazzled readership too. … full of back-stabbing, none of it literal. … Hawkins keeps all these fibs, threats and innuendoes swirling through her book, to the point where they frighten and undermine each of her characters.” Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“[The Girl on the Train] pulls off a thriller's toughest trick: carefully assembling everything we think we know, until it reveals the one thing we didn't see coming.”  — Entertainment Weekly

“The novel is perfectly paced, from its arresting beginning to its twist ending; it's not an easy book to put down. …what really makes The Girl on the Train such a gripping novel is Hawkins' remarkable understanding of the limits of human knowledge, and the degree to which memory and imagination can become confused.” —NPR.org

“Hawkins’s taut story roars along at the pace of, well, a high-speed train… a smart, searing thriller that offers readers a 360-degree view of lust, love, marriage and divorce.” —Good Housekeeping

“Like its train, the story blasts through the stagnation of these lives in suburban London and the reader cannot help but turn pages... The welcome echoes of “Rear Window” throughout the story and its propulsive narrative make The Girl on the Train an absorbing read.”  —The Boston Globe

After an extraordinary 1.5 years on the New York Times bestseller list, with over five million copies sold in the US alone, Riverhead Books is thrilled to release the smash international sensation THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN as a movie tie-in edition, on-sale August 23, 2016. The hotly anticipated film adaptation starring Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux, and Rebecca Ferguson will hit theaters this October and is already building huge buzz.

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN took the world by storm when published last January, debuting atop the New York Times bestseller list and earning widespread, glowing media attention, from profiles in all three major national papers, New York Times, Wall Street Journal & USA Today; to features on all three national morning TV Shows, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning & The Today Show; to rave reviews across the board, including from Janet Maslin in the New York Times, who praised “more fun with unreliable narration than any chiller since Gone Girl” and NPR, who called it “perfectly paced, from its arresting beginning to its twist ending.”

This stunning movie tie-in reissue is sure to capture any new readers who have yet to discover THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN. Paula Hawkins is on track to become a household name and we hope you’ll join us in celebrating this new edition of the explosive debut that started it all.

Movie Review: The Huntsman: Winter's War + Houston Fan Event!

The Huntsman: Winter's War
Director: Cedric Nicolas-Troyan
Writers: Evan Spiliotopoulos, Craig Mazin
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, Charlize Theron
MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for fantasy action violence and some sensuality

As two evil sisters prepare to conquer the land; two renegades - Eric the Huntsman - who previously aided Snow White in defeating Ravenna, and his forbidden lover, Sara set out to stop them.

I attended a fan event for The Huntsman Winter's War over the weekend. It was quite the spectacle I thought it would be. I wouldn't have expected any less from the studio that also gave us Maleficent and Snow White and The Huntsman.  After pictures in the lobby, I was handed an armload of promotional merchandise and I walked into the darkened theatre to the tunes of a mid-evil score.  The stage was set.

After the movie, the audience was treated to a live question and answer session with the stars. Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain and Charlize Theron all appeared via satellite feed from LA. Doesn't it sound amazing? The evening was a lot of fun, but the actual film was the low point. The Huntsman Winter's War was not amazing.

Let me detail the best parts of the film first. I really enjoyed Emily Blunt as Freya, the Snow Queen. I appreciated her willingness to throw herself into the role. Charlize Theron also did a great job reprising her role as Ravenna, the Evil Queen. I liked the dynamic between both of the queens. Their scenes together were, by far, the best in the film.

The hand-to-hand combat scenes were a ton of fun. They looked fluid and amazing. Kudos to the fight choreographers.  There was a mixture of weapons and tools which added to the complexity. I looked forward to the fight scenes.

The costuming was flawless. The queens both wore fantastic dresses.  I could have watched the light reflect off of Freya's gowns for hours. Genuinely mesmerizing.

Okay. That's it. That was what I liked about The Huntsman Winter's War. What wasn't I crazy about? The story was boring! The whole thing seemed contrived and pointless. And the contrived, pointless story moved at a snail's pace between the combat.

The timeline leaves much to be desired. I watched Snow White and the Huntsman before this film so I could be prepared. It's both a prequel and a sequel of sorts. Confused yet? I think it was a mistake to include Ravenna in this story. Her inclusion makes this story too complex. The movie starts at a time period before Snow White and the Huntsman. Then, there is a part which takes place during the same time of the first movie and, by the end, we are clearly at a time period after the Snow White and the Huntsman.  And I don't think that any of that was necessary. It's the fantasy that makes this genre of film so appealing. Here, the filmmakers tried to explain too much, losing some of the audience.

I didn't like Jessica Chastain in the role of Sara. She said in the post-movie interview that she had never done a fantasy film before. I think that came across, to her detriment.  She came off as too rigid and real for the role. Also, Chris Hemsworth seemed to be phoning-in his performance as Eric and his accent. He even seemed to be phoning-in his appearance in the post-movie interview. I know what everyone is thinking. We love Thor. I love Thor, too, but he has to it some effort.

All in all, The Huntsman Winter's War is a beautiful film with not much else to offer. Wait for it to come to video or video on demand.  Of course, if you don't want to take my word for it, The Huntsman Winter's War opens everywhere on April 22.

The Huntsman Winter's War
In Theaters - April 2016

The fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in The Huntsman Winter’s War, an epic action-adventure in which they are joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, as well as director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale nested in the legendary saga.

Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.

When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.

In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman.

Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

A Lionsgate presentation, a Black Label Media presentation, a Thunder Road production, a Denis Villeneuve film.

I was very excited to go see Sicario because, not only is it more up my alley, but it also has two of the most badasses ever: Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro (one of my favorite actors). Let me start by saying that their performances did NOT disappoint! Especially Benicio's! His acting was superb and he made you believe so many different things, just to throw you a curve ball in the end. That's what makes him such an amazing actor (and I have a weak spot for him because he is in my most favorite movie: Snatch!). Emily was also great; she made you feel all of her feels. Her accent was pretty good, but I felt they gave her very few lines -especially for being one of the main characters! Maybe because her accent needs more perfection? Not sure, because, what I got to hear, was pretty darn American! All the other actors did a good job too!

Now let's talk about the editing: it was a little choppy in some parts. It felt like they were jumping from one scene to the next instead of it having a smooth transition. The effects were pretty good, although not a whole lot were needed believe it or not. The filming style isn't for everyone, for it sometimes is not the smooth, still camera we are more used to. In some of the scenes it seems like the person was walking as they were recording, but I liked they way it was done (not as jumpy as The Blair Witch Project) because it made me feel like I was there with them, going through what they were going through.

And now the best part: the plot! As you read above in the studio given summary of the movie, you can see they speak about corruption. This, of course, is nothing new in the world of the FBI (or CIA or any government branch really) movie plots, but the way they presented it and the way it all was discovered was pretty out of the left field. They really fool you more than once! I felt bad for Kate (Emily Blunt) because she was constantly put between a rock and a hard place since she was a good, moralistic person. I was able to identify with her (and if you know me, you know that I'd be just like her) because she is one of those that wants to really make a difference but sometimes has to make tough choices that make her go against her morality (and who hasn't been there, right?). My only complaint about Kate, honestly, is that I guess I am used to seeing Emily play SUCH badass take-no-one's-crap kind of characters, and in this movie she was a watered down version of that. But, I understand you can't play the same character all the time ;)

Overall, I liked the movie. It kept me intrigued and it shows something that is a true reality for some people. With that said, I will let you all know that this is not for the faint of heart or for those that get easily upset with graphic and gory scenes. There are quite a few horrific things shown that not everyone will be able to tolerate. Just bare in mind: it's about the drug cartel, that should tell you enough! If you're ok with all these types of scenes, like I am, then definitely go check it out!
