Heartless Prince
Author: Angela DeVito and Leigh Dragoon
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Graphic Novels
Released: November 2nd 2021
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

A fierce warrior must save the heart of her beloved prince before it's too late in the first book of a new YA fantasy-adventure graphic novel trilogy, perfect for fans of Noelle Stevenson's Nimona and Kazu Kibuishi's Amulet

Evony is an orphaned princess from a kingdom destroyed by a power-hungry witch. Prince Ammon has recently been drawn to her, or at least he’s drawn to her uncanny ability to sense when familiars—servants to the witches—are approaching his kingdom’s borders. And Evony, well Evony has always longed for something more with Ammon. Wanting to prove himself to his kingdom and parents, Ammon takes Evony outside the borders to fight the familiars head-to-head. All is well until they’re captured by witch Aradia, who steals Ammon’s heart and leaves his body to turn into one of her familiars. What’s worse, his sister Nissa has been taken hostage by Aradia’s daughter. Evony makes it her miss onto retrieve Ammon’s heart and save Nissa, taking her into the mysterious Witchlands. There, she will discover a secret about her past that will change everything.

As my first graphic novel, I found Heartless Prince quick and unusual read, yet I really enjoyed the story. Heatless Prince is fast-paced and for a young audience that follows a story of an orphan that grew up along Prince Ammon. Evony, our main character, has a special power that protects the Prince's family's land. When Ammon gets injured, Evony embarks a journey that challenges her with an evil and dark fantasy world.

Heartless Prince's illustrations are stunning! The color scheme are complex and dynamic. Readers would enjoy this enchanting tale full of magic and mystery.

By Serena Valentino
Published October 3rd 2017
Recommended for ages 9+

Thanks to Disney-Hyperion for sending me a set of VILLAINS books, and for providing a prize pack!
About Mistress of All Evil (Book #4): Why does Maleficent curse the innocent princess? What led to her becoming so filled with malice, anger, and hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account, pulled down from the many passed down through the ages. It is a tale of love and betrayal, of magic and reveries. It is a tale of the Mistress of All Evil.
About the Series: The Disney Villains series by Serena Valentino explores how the antagonists in Disney movies became some of storytelling's most iconic villains. In the first four Villains books, we see how the Evil Queen, the Beast, Ursula, and Maleficent fall into darkness, through the instigation of the mysterious Odd Sisters: Lucinda, Martha, and Ruby.

What are your "WICKED" Halloween plans this season?

This year I'll be attending a Halloween party themed "Shipwreck on KilliGan's Island!" Get it? Like the old TV series "Gilligan's Island". My friend and I will be dressing up as characters from the movie Black Swan that starred Natalie Portman. I will be the Black Swan (the evil one of course) and my friend will be the White Swan (the innocent one).

I have always wanted to be Maleficent for Halloween, maybe next year I'll finally do it. I absolutely love the Maleficent that Angelia Jolie portrays in 2014's Maleficent. So what are your costume(s) for this Halloween? Share in the comments below.

Serena Valentino has been weaving tales that combine mythos and guile for the past decade. She has earned critical acclaim in both the comic and horror domains, where she is known for her unique style of storytelling, bringing her readers into exquisitely frightening worlds filled with terror, beauty, and extraordinary protagonists. The books in her best-selling Villains series are best enjoyed when read in the following order: Fairest of All, The Beast Within, Poor Unfortunate Soul, and Mistress of All Evil.

Blog Tour: Heartwood Hotel by Kallie George, illustrated by Stephanie Graegin + Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on the Heartwood Hotel tour for Kallie George, illustrated by Stephanie Graegin. This tour is hosted by Rockstar Book Tour.

Heartwood Hotel
Book #1
Author: Kallie George
Illustrated by: Stephanie Graegin
Reading Level: Childrens
Genre: Fantasy
Released: July 3rd 2017
Review Source: Disney-Hyperion

When Mona the Mouse stumbles across the wondrous world of the Heartwood Hotel in the middle of a storm, she desperately hopes they'll let her stay. As it turns out, Mona is precisely the maid they need at the grandest hotel in Fernwood Forest, where animals come from far and wide for safety, luxury, and comfort. But the Heartwood Hotel is not all acorn souffl and soft moss-lined beds. Danger lurks, and as it approaches, Mona finds that this hotel is more than a warm place to spend the night. It might also be a home.

This delightfully enticing start of a new chapter book series tells a tale of friendship, courage, and community, with exquisite black-and-white illustrations throughout..

A mouse named Mona was lost in the woods after a scary storm torn her home. With no place to go, she began walking until she discovered wolves eyes staring at her. The poor mouse then fell in a river that lead her to an unknown place. Luckily she was able to open the "HH" door, met a kind badger, and found a place to stay, with conditions. Hard work, but with the wonders of the Heartwood Hotel.

As Mona learn the rules of Heartwood, she began taking care of things on her own. Yet, little by little she began breaking the rules. She talked to the guests at the hotel. Which Tilly, the squirrel, warned her not to. It was an accident at first, as she was stuck in a tub and the guests were scared off. Thankfully, Mona is very clever, and was able to assist them. And these smelly guests, were happy for her help. Then, the second time she spoke with a guest at the hotel was to let a lonely soul feel wanted and special. Then she left the premises to assist a bear find his way home! Another time, she let a six legged guest stay, even if they are not allowed. When Tilly found out, she was so furious and scared Mona out of the hotel. Gratefully, Mona return to save them all, after discovering wolves were planning to attack the hotel.

Heartwood Hotel is a sweet story that teaches that breaking rules for good and kind gestures isn't bad. Sometimes we will need to break the rules and do what's right. Mona wasn't scared to break these rules because she knew these fellow animals needed her help. She was kind and compassionate. We also learn that facing our fears and being brave is hard but at times we must face reality and our fears. Also, that working as a team many things can get accomplished.

Mona with fierce determination saves all the animals. She was home and she didn't want anyone or anything to be ruined. With her kindness, even the bear was willing to help! It shows that kindness can go a long way. And home is where the heart is.

For its lessons, I would recommend mothers to buy this book to their kids between ages 4-7. It's short and sweet. I know my niece enjoyed it as much as I did. Never be afraid, my little ones.

Waiting on Wednesday: Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Royal Bastards
Author: Andrew Shvarts
Release Date: June 6th 2017
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Being a bastard blows. Tilla would know. Her father, Lord Kent of the Western Province, loved her as a child, but cast her aside as soon as he had trueborn children.

At sixteen, Tilla spends her days exploring long-forgotten tunnels beneath the castle with her stablehand half brother, Jax, and her nights drinking with the servants, passing out on Jax’s floor while her castle bedroom collects dust. Tilla secretly longs to sit by her father’s side, resplendent in a sparkling gown, enjoying feasts with the rest of the family. Instead, she sits with the other bastards, like Miles of House Hampstedt, an awkward scholar who’s been in love with Tilla since they were children.

Then, at a feast honoring the visiting princess Lyriana, the royal shocks everyone by choosing to sit at the Bastards’ Table. Before she knows it, Tilla is leading the sheltered princess on a late-night escapade. Along with Jax, Miles, and fellow bastard Zell, a Zitochi warrior from the north, they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to witness.

Rebellion is brewing in the west, and a brutal coup leaves Lyriana’s uncle, the Royal Archmagus, dead—with Lyriana next on the list. The group flees for their lives, relentlessly pursued by murderous mercenaries; their own parents have put a price on their heads to prevent the king and his powerful Royal Mages from discovering their treachery.

The bastards band together, realizing they alone have the power to prevent a civil war that will tear their kingdom apart—if they can warn the king in time. And if they can survive the journey . . .

Book Review: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

The Hidden Oracle
The Trials of Apollo #1
Author: Rick Riordan
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: May 3rd 2016
Review Source: Purchased

How do you punish an immortal?

By making him human.

After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus's favour.

But Apollo has many enemies - gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

Let me start of by saying that it felt so good being back in the world of demigods, gods, and impossible odds! Rick Riordan is a master of words and The Hidden Oracle is no exception.

The story of Apollo's misfortune of being turned human was an interesting one to say the least. Being used to pretty much having control over most anything, waking up and realizing that he didn't have that any more, that he was a mere mortal who couldn't even use nectar and ambrosia to heal, and on top of that being bound to a flighty twelve year old demigod, Apollo sure had a long road back to godhood. There was definitely a lot of humor through out this book, and many times I found myself laughing out loud. Apollo, ever since being further introduced in The Titan's Curse, became one of my favorite gods so I will admit that he is quite self centered and arrogant, for the most part in an endearing sort of way. However, it was nice to see him realize that maybe he wasn't as perfect as he thought and having that character development take him to new discoveries about himself and the life he had as a god. Of course, getting glimpses at the previous series's characters was also one of my favorite parts of this story! We get to see what's been going on with our Seven heroes, as well as the lives of their friends and allies from both Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter.

Hopefully as the series progress we get to see them interact with Apollo a little bit more, especially those like Annabeth, Jason, Piper, Hazel, Frank, and Reyna among others that we didn't see as much in this book. With this story you also get new characters that you can't help but fall in love with. I can't wait to see where the next book takes us, and I can't wait to continue to delve into Apollo's development and see him grow and earn his spot back as a god.

Giveaway Blitz: #AThousandNights by E.K. Johnston

We are excited to share A Thousand Nights, a dazzling retelling of Arabian Nights by E.K. Johnston!

Lo-Melkhiin killed three hundred girls before he came to her village, looking for a wife. When she sees the dust cloud on the horizon, she knows he has arrived. She knows he will want the loveliest girl: her sister. She vows she will not let her be next.

And so she is taken in her sister's place, and she believes death will soon follow. Lo-Melkhiin's court is a dangerous palace filled with pretty things: intricate statues with wretched eyes, exquisite threads to weave the most beautiful garments. She sees everything as if for the last time. But the first sun rises and sets, and she is not dead. Night after night, Lo-Melkhiin comes to her and listens to the stories she tells, and day after day she is awoken by the sunrise. Exploring the palace, she begins to unlock years of fear that have tormented and silenced a kingdom. Lo-Melkhiin was not always a cruel ruler. Something went wrong.

Far away, in their village, her sister is mourning. Through her pain, she calls upon the desert winds, conjuring a subtle unseen magic, and something besides death stirs the air.

Back at the palace, the words she speaks to Lo-Melkhiin every night are given a strange life of their own. Little things, at first: a dress from home, a vision of her sister. With each tale she spins, her power grows. Soon she dreams of bigger, more terrible magic: power enough to save a king, if she can put an end to the rule of a monster.
"A story threaded with shimmering vibrance and beauty, A Thousand Nights will weave its spell over readers' hearts and leave them captivated long after the final tale has been told." —Alexandra Bracken, New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds series
