BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.
Josephina Espinosa makes her living as a hacker-for-hire in the Lone Star Republic, a remnant of the fractured U.S.A. That is, until the day she and her best friend are gunned down in a government raid.
With her dying breath, Jo uses magical lore passed down from her grandmother to summon a wish-granter. Her wish? To save her friend’s life. Except wishes have costs, and for Jo, the price is the erasure of her entire mortal existence.
Now, as the most recent addition to the mysterious Society of Wishes, Jo must form a new “life” alongside the seven other members, one of which being her savior himself. Living as an occupant of the Society’s lavish mansion should be quite the perk, but while it is furnished with everything its inhabitants could possibly need, it lacks one thing—freedom.
Her otherworldly identity crisis takes a backseat, however, when Jo learns that the friend she sacrificed everything for is headed down the same path to ruin. Jumping in head-first, Jo uses her newfound magical abilities to protect him, only to realize that the ripples of her actions have far-reaching consequences. When the Society’s aloof leader Snow decides to give her a taste of his own ancient magic, Jo discovers that there are threads woven into the tapestry of her new reality that reach far beyond the wishes she is now required to grant. Ones that, if tugged on, could mean the unraveling of her existence itself.

The Rebels of Gold Cover Reveal by Elise Kova

We are so stoked about this cover reveal for The Rebels of Gold!

This is a bitter sweet cover reveal, it looms amazingly fantastic. I am saddened because I've really been loving the series and the fact it's only three books is great but as always, we want more. The world of Loom is gritty, and desperate in it's fight for survival in trying to work and row while under the control of Nova, the floating sky capital.

Arianna has gone to Nova, leaving Florence behind to help with the second rebellion (hint, that's who's on the cover). The second installment of the series left me needing to know what was going to happen to everyone, all the while Ari and Cvareh are dancing closer and closer to a line that once crossed can't really be redrawn again.

I was a big fan of Elise Kova's previous series, Air Awakens and the short prequels the Tower Guard books. Her writing is wonderfully descriptive without being wordy or long (think like the Hobbit). If steampunk isn't your thing, don't let that label stop you from reading these books. This series is an epic science fiction fantasy more than anything else, with some elements of steampunk are woven in to show how advanced their society could have been if not hindered or slowed down by the dragons on Nova, of their King.

The Dragons of Nova
The Loom Saga #2
Author: Elise Kova
Reading Level: YA
Genre: Steampunk
Released: July 11, 2017
Review Source: Keymaster Press
Pages: 488

Cvareh returns home to his sky world of Nova with the genius crafter Arianna as his temperamental guest.
The mercurial inventor possesses all the Xin family needs to turn the tides of a centuries-old power struggle, but the secrets she harbors must be earned with trust -- hard to come by for Ari, especially when it comes to Dragons.
On Nova, Ari finds herself closer to exacting vengeance against the traitor who killed everything -- and everyone – she once loved. But before Ari can complete her campaign of revenge, the Crimson Court exposes her shadowed past and reveals something even more dangerous sparking between her and Cvareh. While Nova is embroiled in blood sport and political games, the rebels on Loom prepare for an all-out assault on their Dragon oppressors. Florence unexpectedly finds herself at the forefront of change, as her unique blend of skills -- and quick-shooting accuracy -- makes her a force to be reckoned with. For the future of her world, she vows vengeance against the Dragons.

Before the rebellion can rise, though, the Guilds must fall.

Elise Kova has managed to yet again take me on a whirlwind adventure, this time, on a dragon glider!

The waiting between book one and two was excruciating, Elise certain can weave quite the cliff hanger, waiting to see how Cvareh and Arianna were going to fair on Nova, the floating land (and homes) of the dragons above Loom. The revolution is brewing down below, and the dragons are stirring into place. Before picking up the arc I was really looking forward to seeing how Florence would grow into her own now that her mentor and long time friend Ari, the White Wraith, has left her behind at the guild. Florence struggles to find her place in the revolution. Everyone around her keeps shoving her into a definition she no longer feels apart of, she wants to be a Rivet not a Raven, but no one can see past her guild. I loved how her character has flourished in book two.

Can I put the spot light on Cvareh and Arianna?! I mean WOW. Now while romance is a sub-genera for this series, I looooove reading how characters find their way to each other. No spoilers from me, but their relationship was hilarious in the first novel, so feisty! Ari's stay on Nova was so much fun to indulge in. I love the attention to detail and how dynamic their world is, it is vastly different from Loom.

I don't want readers to misinterpret the steampunk moniker, it is richly steeped in fantasy, and unique lore, the action is truly captivating and doesn't read too fast or too short, it fits with each incident. The steampunk comes into play through the guilds, through the White Wraith in her beginnings and Frankenstein-esc creation. It does not mean there are many walking around in corsets and spikes, or a mash up of technology and Victorian era styling, that is not the Loom Saga. If you look for a big wide world full of place to explore, many characters that each have their own means and motives while simultaneously building tensions between warring fractions, pick this series up. I was a fast fan for the Air awakens series, I literally fell in love with Aldrik and Vhalla. It was a no-brainer to pick up the Loom Saga, I love Elise Kova's writing style, her voice and characters are truly breathtaking.

“They’re coming from the front!” Nora screamed over the crescendo of the engine gaining speed. On cue, the train lurched as an endwig was splattered to a bloody mess on the point of the engine’s pilot.

“Bloody cogs,” Florence cursed. The Vicar Alchemist had sent her to protect the mission as the Revolver, but one of her wasn’t going to be enough. “I’m going to the engine.”

“What are we going to do?” The usually self-sure Nora had the face of a cornered hare.

“You’re going to fight.” Florence passed her a weapon.

“I’ve never shot a gun before.”

“Now is a great time to learn.”

“I’m an Alchemist!”

Seriously, Florence was a breath away from shooting the woman herself. “You’re dead if you don’t adapt! There’s three more bombs exactly like the ones you just used, right there. Just fend them off until the train gets up to speed. But don’t use any other disks.”

Florence had no more time to waste as the train lurched again. They just had to survive until the train reached full speed. For all the endwig were, they certainly couldn’t keep up with a locomotive.

She hoped.

The wind whipped her hair around her face as she stuck her head from the train car. Florence reached out for the ladder to the right of the door, scaling up before another endwig could emerge. She swung up just in time as an explosion nearly blew her foot clean off.

“By the five guilds, you two only had three bombs!” she screamed over the wind, not knowing if they could hear. “Ration them a bit!”

Standing, Florence looked in horror at the tracks ahead. Dozens of endwig lined the path, running eagerly to meet the train. She loaded six canisters at once.

Jumping to the tender, Florence lost her footing atop the moving train car. A nail snapped clean off as she sought a grip that would prevent her from being thrown to certain death. If she fell now, she would never get back on the vessel. She’d be torn limb from limb.

Gritting her teeth, Florence rose to her knees, shooting two endwig in the process. She wedged herself between two grooves on the top of the tender. Blood pooled around her shins as she dug them into the metal for a grip where there was none, but she was stable enough to take aim, and that meant she could open fire.

Five shots down, and Florence reloaded her gun. Endwig came relentlessly like a never-ending nightmare. But the train didn’t gain any more speed. She repeated the process, waiting for the vessel to be like her bullets, whizzing through the night at deadly speeds.

“Anders, now would be a great time to open her up!” she screamed.

There was no reply.

“Anders, Rotus, we need speed, get us out of here faster!”

Five long claws curled around the door of the engine in answer. Florence watched in horror as the white silhouette of an endwig, dotted in the black blood of a Chimera, pulled itself from the engine room. Florence swallowed hard.

They were without Rivet and Raven, stumbling through the darkness, enemies at all sides. She raised her gun slowly, looking fearlessly at the face of death itself. Her revolver was steady over the rocking of the train.

“You think I’m not used to this?” Her mouth curled into a mad grin. “I’ve been fighting my way out of the darkness my whole life. And you’re not going to stop me now.”

Gunshots echoed through the forest.

Her vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.
Excerpt

That was an appealing thought, the idea of taking Florence and running from the fight. But Arianna didn’t give it too much heed. There was no time to think that plan through and besides, she was already committed to the struggle. At the very least, she’d get to slay some Dragons, and it was always a good day when that happened.

The Rider before Arianna spun, kicking through the air. He moved with deft precision and a speed that spoke of no movement wasted. Arianna turned and ducked, the kick passing over her head. With an outstretched leg she tried to hook the heel that still supported the majority of the Dragon’s weight.
The Rider hopped, shifting weight to the foot he was previously kicking with and—in one motion—bringing up his other foot into Arianna’s face. Her nose sounded like celery snapping; Arianna thanked every stroke of luck she’d ever had for the thick cotton covering her face, hiding the blood that no doubt exploded from it. She tumbled back, twisting the dagger in her hand to a saber grip, then lunged forward again, targeting the Dragon’s chest.

A swipe of her dagger, a parry from the Dragon’s claws or a twist for Arianna’s blade to hit a shoulder, a forearm, a hand. The Rider took all forms of punishment in order to protect his heart—the one organ whose destruction would prove a fatal injury. The Rider caught one of the jabs of her blade and with a swift motion, snapped Arianna’s wrist with ease.

Arianna cried out and retreated. She switched the dagger from one hand to the other, giving the bones in her right wrist time to knit. The Dragon didn’t want to relinquish the hard-earned upper hand
and continued to strike. A blow to the chest knocked the wind from Arianna, almost rendering her twist to avoid the talons closing in for her throat useless.

The hits racked up. Arianna struggled to avoid any significant blows. Punches she could take, but there were too many people around to take a hit that broke skin. As loath as she was to admit it, Arianna was outclassed. Her eyes wildly scanned the room, looking for alternative solutions, trying to formulate a plan.
A familiar explosion burst out from behind her shoulder. It was the worst thing she had ever felt. It meant Florence had joined the fight.

Arianna is focused on her work, the more risky the bigger the pay day. it's been a handful of years since the last alliance tried to rebel against the Dragon hierarchy. After all, what business does a dragon have on Loom? If she comes across a dragon, it's better to harvest them.

Wrapping up a job a dragon falls and is practically gift wrapped before Arianna, and as she goes for his heart he offers he the un thinkable. In exchange for smuggling him to one of the guilds, she'll get the one thing she wants, to over throw the Dragon King. It's hard to say no, and a deal is struck, even if she detests him the ends justify the means in her world.

Turns out this dragon has more baggage then she calculated for, the odds are shrinking against her. As other dragons descend to Loom in search of Cvareh, she wonders who she is traveling with and what his motives are. For her, a dragon is better off dead.

I loved Elise Kova's previous books, the Air Awakens series, and I was just so excited to read The Alchemists of Loom. hook and line I was caught up in this book and finished it way to quickly. The great news, the author sticks to a schedule when releasing books, every three months! YAY! I recommend this to everyone, it's amazingly written, the world is vast and so thought out, the characters are addicting. Do yourself a favor and get lost within the pages and streets of Loom.
