Book News: Lara Adrian's Defy the Dawn + Surprise

For all Lara Adrian fans, the author shared a note on delay and a surprise because of that delay in publishing Defy the Dawn.

Note from Lara Adrian:
Hi, everyone!

I can't believe it's nearly May already. I know you're eager to hear more about Defy the Dawn, and I'll get to that--and something all-new on the way--further in this message. First, I want to fill you in on some personal news I have not shared publicly. (Sorry, it's long. What can I say? I'm a novelist!)

I am very fortunate to have found the love of my life thirty years ago. Anyone who knows me knows I adore my husband, John. He's my best friend, my personal hero, and the strongest, most amazing man I have ever known. It's really no wonder I write romance novels, because I have the privilege of living my happy-ever-after each and every day.

So, imagine my panic when last year--literally two days after my mom died--John came home from a post office run, telling me that he felt extremely weak and feared he was going to pass out. He took his blood pressure and discovered it was dangerously low. As was his heartbeat, which was in the 30s per minute.

We rushed him to the ER, where he spent the night for monitoring and testing. They concluded his heart was strong, but his electrical system was not. The cardiologist told him the odds were good that he'd need a pacemaker in the not too distant future. He was right. In February, John got the device installed. I'm happy to report he's doing great now, but it was a scary bunch of months for us, before and after.

As wakeup calls like this tend to do, it's convinced us to make some changes and quit putting off plans we've been setting aside for "someday" - because life is precious, and it's never as long as we hope it will be. For John and me, those plans will include trading New England winters for a permanent home on the beach in Florida! My dad expects to relocate nearby as well, and we're all looking forward to starting a sunny new chapter in our lives.

Now, don't think all of this means I haven't been writing! Defy the Dawn is on the way (although delayed from my anticipated Spring timeframe) and I've also got a big surprise release that I'm bumping up earlier than planned to make up for the missed deadline on Defy.

Please read on for all of the release info and the exclusive cover reveal that you're seeing before anyone else!

Book Review: Edge of Dawn by Lara Adrian

Edge of Dawn
Midnight Breed #11
Author: Lara Adrian
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Released: February 21st 2013
Review Source: Purchased
Available: Amazon

Summary: In this pulse-pounding and thrillingly sensual novel, New York Timesbestselling author Lara Adrian returns to the mesmerizing world of the Midnight Breed, following new characters into a dark future where an uneasy peace can unravel into war—and a great betrayal can mask an all-consuming love.

Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.

Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.

The story opens with a few journal entries from the Order's archives, written by Jenna Tucker-Darrow, our human turned "cyborg" by the Ancient in Shades of Midnight. Jenna has started to chronicle the Breed's history as told by the Ancient in her dreams/memories. We are then transported 20 years into the future after First Dawn took place following Dragos unleashing the Rogues on society all around the world. In one coordinated event, the Breed was forced out into the open for the humans to see and for the most part fear. But Dragos did not win, and Lucan has been working with the GNC for twenty years to work toward a peaceful future for all mankind and Breed alike.

Lucan Thorne finds himself to be more of a diplomat on Breed/Human relations now that both sides are trying to peacefully co-exist together around the world. The Order no longer resides in one location, they have bases of operations all around the globe run by the Elder members of the Order. Lucan is currently preparing for the first peace summit with the GNC and the Order's Elders are all coming in to Washington D.C. to show a strong front for the Breed.

Meanwhile we are introduced to a whole new cast of sexy, fierce warriors - the next generation of the Order. Nathan (GenOne son of Corinne), Jax, Bal (Balthazar), Rafe (Xander Rafael - the son of Tess and Dante), Dare (Darien - son of Lucan and Gabrielle), Julian, Torin, Elijah, Micah, Aric (son of Tavia and Chase) and last but not least, Mira (the young blonde adopted daughter of Nikolai and Renatta). We are also introduced to Carys Chase (fraternal twin sister of Aric who was born both Breed and Breedmate like her mother, Tavia). Now all of these character names may seem confusing but they all play a role and I believe we'll start to see books featuring each of them which means this series can go on forever! You won't hear any complaints from me!

But all of that being said, Edge of Dawn belongs to Mira and Kellan. You remember Kellan Archer, grandson of Lazaro Archer who came to live with the Order after his entire family was blown sky high along with their Darkhaven in Deeper Than Midnight. Well Mira is no longer the little blonde haired waif that used to run up and down the hallways and chase puppies around in the snow. No, she is now a fully capable member of the Order and is Captain of her own team. She is the only member of the Order who is not Breed. Mira finds herself in Boston, one of her least favorite cities, running patrols with her team on the night of the eight anniversary of Kellan's death. Eight years ago, Kellan disappeared inside a warehouse chasing down a lead on a Rebel group when the warehouse exploded just before Nathan and Mira arrived to help him out. Eight years ago, Mira and Kellan had finally taken their relationship to the next level and made love for the first time. That was the last time Mira would ever know the warmth of the man she had grown to love since he came into her life when she was eight years old.

While her team celebrates a night of successful patrols, Mira being the hot head she is decides the anniversary of Kellan's death is just too much to bear and goes off on her own. She ends up running into a known Rebel who goes by the name Rooster (because of his red mohawk). She follows him to a local club and pins Rooster with a couple of her lethal daggers in the arms to a nearby wall. Nathan steps in to get her to cool off, but the damage has been done. Mira has been reprimanded more than once for her temper and this time she sends Lucan over the edge. He sends her team back to Montreal and orders Mira to escort a high profile Scientist, Jeremy Ackmeyer, to D.C. for the Peace Summit. But when she goes to pick him up, Ackmeyer has already been kidnapped, and Mira now finds herself face to face with Bowman. Bowman is a Rebel leader, living on the outskirts of Boston. But Bowman wasn't looking for trouble on this kidnapping mission, he certainly wasn't looking for a member of the Order to be the one chosen to escort the reclusive scientist to the peace summit. He definitely wasn't planning on bumping into Mira, the woman he loves and has loved for most of his life. Bowman is Kellan who is very much not dead.

Kellan has kept his distance for the last eight years but has never been able to let go of Mira. He never wanted to leave her, in fact he wanted to make her his blood bonded mate eight years ago. But when he woke up the following morning with Mira in his arms, she briefly opened her unshielded eyes and Kellan got a very quick glimpse of his fate. A fate that would damn them both and leave Kellan dead in the end causing Mira more pain than his sudden disappearance following the warehouse explosion. Mira can't believe what she is seeing now, that the only person her heart has ever wanted is still alive after all these years. But whether he is a Rebel leader who believes his fate is damned or not, she wants this male as hers and will stop at nothing to change their fate.

Their love story is filled with a passion that will ignite your blood and get your pulse racing. It will have you panting one minute and screaming in agony the next. You will be searching for the happily ever after to the very last page but their story, though painful and tragic, is definitely my favorite of the series thus far. Lara has just released the title of the next in the series, Crave the Night, where I believe we'll see Nathan and Jordana's story. There's a bit in this book between them that is just absolutely priceless. No matter who the book ultimately ends up being about, Lara has nailed this series and has given it fresh blood and a new enemy for the Order to smoke out of hiding once more.

Book Review: Veil of Midnight

Veil of Midnight
Midnight Breed #5
Author: Lara Adrian
Pages: 355 pgs
Reading Level: Adult
Published: December 30th 2008

This is book 5 of the Midnight Breed Series and like the previous books, it did not disappoint! This book is about Nikolai, the blond haired tough vampire from Russia.  The book picks up right where the last book left off.  For some reason, I thought that this book was a little darker.  I though it was very different from the first Midnight Breed book as it had more action and the story is developing more.  I’m curious as to what Lara Adrian has in mind with the series.

The Order has discovered that someone is hunting down and killing the known Gen Ones remaining in the Breed population.  Nikolai is sent to Montreal to speak with Sergei Yakut and warn him about the killings of the Gen Ones and see if he would join the Order and bring down Dragos. While there, Nikolai discovers that Yakut is not what he appears to be.   He also discovers that Yakut is holding two Breed Mates prisoners and is keeping them because of their special powers.  Although one of them, Renata is Yakut’s personal body guard, he manages to keep her on his side by threatening her with killing the other Breed Mate, a child with a powerful gift, who Renata has grown to love and become very protective of.   In this book, the author introduces “Hunter.”  A new generation Gen One with a mind of his own and who has other plans for Dragos.  I cant wait to find out what happens next and whether Hunter gets his own book.  ASHES OF MIDNIGHT is the next book and I'm sure I will not be disappointed.

Summary: Bound by blood, addicted to danger, they'll enter the darkest—and most erotic—place of all.

A warrior trained in bullets and blades, Renata cannot be bested by any man—vampire or mortal. But her most powerful weapon is her extraordinary psychic ability—a gift both rare and deadly. Now a stranger threatens her hard-won independence—a golden-haired vampire who lures her into a realm of darkness…and pleasure beyond imagining.

A combat-loving adrenaline junkie, Nikolai dispenses his own justice to enemies of the Breed—and his latest quarry is a ruthless assassin. One woman stands in his way: the seductive, cool-as-ice bodyguard, Renata. But Renata’s powers are put to the test when a loved one, a child, is threatened and she’s forced to turn to Niko for help. As the two join forces, as desire fans the flames of a deeper hunger, Renata’s life is under siege by a man who offers the exquisite pleasure of a blood bond—and a passion that could save or doom them both forever.…

Midnight Rising Book Review

Midnight Rising
Midnight Breed #4
Author: Lara Adrian
Pages: 384 pgs
Reading Level: Adult
Published: March 25th 2008

This is book 4 of the Midnight Breed Series and I have to say, I am still in love with the series. I have yet to be disappointed.  I find myself reading and not being able to put the books down because I want to know what’s going to happen next.

The story picks up right where Midnight Awakening left off. Rio is in cave where the empty hibernation chamber was found that once held one of the original alien vampires. Rio stayed behind to blow up the cave so that no one would find it.  Several months later, the cave still remains open and Rio is contemplating whether or not to lock himself in the cave to die.  After his blood mate Eva betrayed the Order and almost had him killed, he has never been able to get over it.  Meanwhile, Dylan, a journalist who is trying to get her “big” story to make a name for herself stumbles upon the crypt where Rio is.  Now Rio realizes he has to erase her memory and get the camera which she took the pictures with before she publishes her story.  Of course, this is when they fall in love, but the problem is that she is a breed mate, and he is scared of falling in love again, nonetheless, trusting a woman again.  After returning to the States, Dylan chose to go back to her old life because her mother was dying of cancer and didn’t have too much time to live.  So now Rio is told to erase her memory of everything, including him, something they both don’t want.  I don’t want to give much more up, but there is something bad brewing up and Dylan is the only one who can help.  I can’t wait to start reading book #5, Veil of Midnight.

Summary: In a world of shadows and dark, consuming hungers, desire is the deadliest weapon...
For journalist Dylan Alexander, it began with the discovery of a hidden tomb, thrusting her into the center of a gathering storm of violence and secrets. But nothing is as dangerous as the scarred, lethally seductive man who rises from the shadows to draw her into his world of dark desire and endless night.
Fueled by pain and rage over a shattering betrayal, the warrior Rio has pledged his life to the war against the Rogues. He will let nothing stand in his way—least of all a mortal woman with the power to expose the entire vampire race. For an ancient evil has been awakened, and a stunning darkness is on the rise. Suddenly Dylan is powerless to resist Rio’s touch, even as she uncovers a shocking link to her own past. And now she must choose: Leave Rio’s midnight realm, or risk it all for the man who has shown her true passion and the infinite pleasures of the heart. . . .

Taken by Midnight
Midnight Breed #8
Author: Lara Adrian
Pages: 400 pgs
Reading Level: Adult
Published: September 28th 2010

You know how I know when I really LOVE a book, when its real hard for me to explain in words how Great it is. This 8th installment in the Midnight Breed capture me from the beginning until the last written word in the story. Lara develop the main characters so well. The whole book is serious action, it begins right where the last book left off. You have no gaps to fill in at all. The  love story in this book is probably one of my favorites aside from Lucan and Gabrielle. What really made me love the book, is that we get so much story told with all Breedmates and even all the Dragos parts too. The book didn't just focus on Brock and Jenna.

Brock and Jenna became a instant favorite of mines. Individually I think out of all the Breed, I think Brock's gift is amazing! Brock just takes all of Jenna's pain on to him, how romantic is that? Jenna though is still suffering from her loss 4 years ago and on top of that she is trying to make sense of what has happen to her with the Ancient. Brock somehow starts to get into her heart all the while he is also mending a pain from his past.

If you haven't pick up this series, you have no idea what you are missing. Lara has never disappointed in her books. I cant for June to be here so I can read Hunter's story.

Synopsis: At the crossroads of death and desire, a woman tastes a pleasure no mortal is meant to survive . . .

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand--and control--a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock's care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order's mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself--until a secret from Brock's past and Jenna's own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.

Book Review: Shades of Midnight by Lara Adrian

Shades of Midnight: A Midnight Breed Novel

So here is my 1st book review since i made my blog. Everytime I finish a book, i will review it here.

So today I will be reviewing Shades of Midnight by Lara Adrian. The series is called Midnight Breed. This is the 7th book in the series. I give this 7th book 5 stars, it was great from start to finish. Actually kept me on my toes, lol. The 6th book so far has been my slowest read and I'm so glad this one picked up again like all the others before the 6th one.

These books are about The order, they are a group of Breed males that protect the Breed and humans. This one in particular is Kade story. He has only been with The order for about a year and they need him to go to Alaska to see what has happen there, and since he is from the Alaskan wilderness he knows his way around.

Once he is there he meets Alex the bush pilot, She is the one that has discovered what has caused the uproar in Alaska. I don't wanna give away anymore of the book. If you have not read any of the series, I highly recommend it for a great read. If you into the Blackdagger Brotherhood then you will love this series as well. The next book comes out fall of this year and its called :Taken by Midnight.

Product Description:

In a frozen wilderness steeped in darkness, the lines between good and evil, lover and enemy, are never black or white but drawn in Shades of Midnight.

Something inhuman is stalking the frigid Alaskan wilds, leaving unspeakable carnage in its wake. For bush pilot Alexandra Maguire, the killings stir memories of a horrific event she witnessed as a child and evoke in her the inexplicable sense of otherness she has long felt within herself but never fully understood . . . until a darkly seductive stranger with secrets of his own enters her world.

Sent from Boston on a mission to investigate the savage attacks and stop the slaughter, vampire warrior Kade has his own reasons for returning to the frigid, forbidding place of his birth. Haunted by a secret shame, Kade soon realizes the stunning truth of the threat he faces–a threat that will jeopardize the fragile bond he has formed with the courageous, determined young woman who arouses his deepest passions and most primal hungers. But in bringing Alex into his world of blood and darkness, Kade must confront both his own personal demons and the even greater evil that could destroy all he holds dear.
