Book Review: The Kissing Booth by Beth Reekles - #TheKissingBooth

The Kissing Booth
Author: Beth Reekles
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genres: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: May 14th 2013
Review Source: Delacorte Press

Once a self-published sensation, now a hit Netflix movie starring Molly Ringwald and Joey King, THE KISSING BOOTH is a fun, captivating YA romance with a truly authentic teen voice. Written by Beth Reekles when she was only fifteen years old, the book initially accumulated over 19 million reads on the story-sharing platform Wattpad, and its devoted fan base continues to grow!

Meet Rochelle "Elle" Evans: pretty, popular--and never been kissed. Meet Noah Flynn: badass, volatile--and a total player.

When Elle decides to run a kissing booth at her school's Spring Carnival, she locks lips with Noah and her life is turned upside down. Her head says to keep away, but her heart wants to draw closer. This romance seems far from a fairy tale.

Is Elle headed for heartbreak or will she get her happily ever after?

For fans of Stephanie Perkins and Kasie West, THE KISSING BOOTH is the perfect summer romance read!

The Kissing Booth is definitely a quick and sassy read for the summer. I read it at the right time, after being stuck in a book slump for sometime. I also read it after seeing the movie on Netflix. I would recommend it if your in the mood for something with just the right amount of cute, angsty, and teen drama. Does take you back to those high school years.

I want to pint out that the author wrote this book when she herself was in her late teens, so this is probably why it's so relatable. I think the book does connect and is believable throughout most of the writing. The movie is actually not as tame as the book. You will like it just as much as I did.

So if you haven't read or seen The Kissing Booth, go out and get your copy and enjoy this book while we have a few days of summer still left.

Lada Dracul has no allies. No throne. All she has is what she’s always had: herself. After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada is out to punish anyone who dares to cross her blood-strewn path. Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land. But brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her.

What Lada needs is her younger brother Radu’s subtlety and skill. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines. Radu longs for his sister’s fierce confidence—but for the first time in his life, he rejects her unexpected plea for help. Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, he knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, will Mehmed ever forgive him?

As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won . . . and souls will be lost.
Excerpt

“I cannot breathe in this thing.” Lada tried to lift her arms, but the sleeves were not made for her broad shoulders or thick arms. She could barely move. “This weights more than my chain mail.” Lada tugged at the layers of material that made up the skirts.
“Think of it as armor.”
Lada’s lip curled up in a sneer. “What could this possibly protect me from?”
“Mockery. Ridicule. Your men are used to you, but this is a court. You have to do things a certain way. Do not mess this up.” Oana yanked one of Lada’s curls as she tucked it back into the elaborate style.
“Radu should be here.” Lada stared down in despair. “I do not know how to talk to these people.”
“He was always better at that. How did he fare when you left? I worried for him. I thought they would kill you, and break Radu’s heart.” There was a wistful tenderness in Oana’s voice.
Lada took a deep breath. Or tried to—she could not manage it in this abomination of a dress. She and her nurse had not really spoken of Radu since Oana had asked where he was. The truth was as cold and brittle as the ice in her water bowl. “He grew into a new man. Smart. Sly. Too handsome. And, eventually, into a stranger to me.” She had had no word from Radu, no news. She wanted to tell Oana that Radu was coming, but it had been so long. What if he was not? “When I left, he chose the Ottomans. So you were wrong. I survived, and Radu grew a new heart.”
“Did you have nothing in common then?”
A strangled laugh escaped the prison of her bodice. “Well, one thing.” Lada wondered, yet again, whether her absence had granted Radu the portion of Mehmed’s attention and love that he so desperately craved.
And, yet again, she forced herself not to think on it.
Lada tugged at the bodice. She missed her Ottoman finery. At least those draped layers of tunics and robes were comfortable. “I am going to give the wrong impression, wearing this.”
“You mean a good impression?”
“Yes, exactly.”
Oana surveyed her with a critical eye, then threw her hands up in surrender. “This is the best we can hope for, at least as far as your looks. As far as everything else, tonight, pretend you are Radu.”
A small pang hit just above Lada’s heart. Did Oana wish that it were Radu and not Lada she had been reunited with? Everyone always loved Radu best. Well. Lada could be Radu for one night. She grimaced, then smiled broadly and opened her large eyes as wide as she could. It was her best imitation of him.
Oana recoiled. “That is terrifying, girl. I was wrong. Be yourself.”
Lada let her hooded eyelids drop low. She had never been able to be anyone else.

Book Review: Seven Stones To Stand Or Fall by Diana Gabaldon

Seven Stones To Stand Or Fall
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Reading Level: Adult
Genre: Historical
Released: June 27th 2017
Review Source: Delacorte Press

Featuring Jamie Fraser, Lord John Grey, Master Raymond, and many more from Diana Gabaldon’s unforgettable cast of characters, this brilliant collection of Outlander novellas includes two never-before-published works—Besieged and A Fugitive Green—as well as Virgins, The Space Between, Plague of Zombies, A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows, and The Custom of the Army.

I was so pleased to have the opportunity to read this book for Once Upon A Twilight. Thank you not only for the opportunity and the book but also for the excuse to sit all sun screened up in my lounge chair with my sun hat and cooling drink! This is a great summer book. Unlike the 8 main novels in this series, I was able to read each of the 7 stories in one to two days poolside.

Diana Gabaldon has been captivating my imagination since Outlander was released in 1991. I have read all of her books and novellas cover to cover. This book was no exception.

WARNING: this book is not the continuation and 9th novel of the Outlander series (That book is already titled Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone and is not yet written). It is 7 novellas together in one book spread out over the timeline of the Outlander series.

Lord John has many novellas written about him. He is one of the most well-traveled characters in the Outlander universe. I had a few concerns with quickly certain things transpired  in the novella's that he appears in, However, I was almost always able to get past them and enjoy the time I spent getting to know him better. There are other characters as well, a few fans have only heard characters discuss. I was thrilled to 'meet' those characters.

The reason I gave the book 4 stars was there were a few gaps/inconsistencies that I felt were due to rushing a few of the Novellas. That being said the overall stories were really good. I especially loved A Leaf On The Wind Of All Hallows. The Outlander series has a habit of grabbing hold of my imagination and not letting go until I have read the book cover to cover and this particular story did just that. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the series with the warning that the dates of when the stories take place jump all over the Outlander timeline. The remedy for reading them in order is to pay attention to Diana's Introduction.

Blog Tour: Disruptor by Arwen Elys Dayton + Giveaway

Disruptor (Seeker, #3)
Disruptor
Seeker #3
Author: Arwen Elys Dayton
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Release Date: February 7th 2017
Review Source: Delacorte Press

For readers of Sarah J. Maas and of Marie Lu’s Legend trilogy comes Disruptor, the sequel to Traveler, the thrilling conclusion to the Seeker series.

Quin has spent her life as her father’s pawn. She was trained to kill and manipulated to guarantee her family’s power. And now that she’s broken free of that life, she’s found herself trapped again, hostage to a plot that has been centuries in the making.

It’s taken generations for the pieces to come together, and finally all is in place. Her best friend Shinobu’s mind has been corrupted, the Young Dread has aligned with her enemy John, and the bloodthirsty Watchers are being awakened and gathered. Now there is nothing that can stop the force of time.

But Quin will no longer be a pawn. Quin is a Seeker. She stands for light in a shadowy world. She will face the vengeance of the past and its enemies and save herself and the ones she loves, or she will die trying.

Disruptor. The final book in the Seeker Series. A series that I have followed closely, and have felt very protective of. It holds fond memories for me, being one of the first books I was extremely excited to receive as a reviewer. And it's now coming to a close. With everything in shambles after Traveler we pick up a little bit later, with a new character.

This new character really threw me for a loop. But honestly you learn to love him no matter what.
Quin, Shinobu, and John are still the characters that you love. And they grow into characters that you respect more than you did. They have each been separated from one another, so they are learning to be their own characters without each other. We're use to at least Shinobu and Quin being together. So to see them off on their own really excited me.

This story is one that I hold close to my heart - as I've already said previously - and so when a series comes to an end there is always apprehension with how it will end. This one ended perfectly and honestly in a way I didn't expect. But I loved it.

If you haven't read any of these books in this series I say start. If you have prepare yourself to say goodbye to some of the best characters we know.

Book Review: The Weight Of Zero by Karen Fortunati

The Weight Of Zero
Author: Karen Fortunati
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: October 11 2016
Review Source: Delacorte Press

Seventeen-year-old Cath knows Zero is coming for her. Zero, the devastating depression born of Catherine’s bipolar disease, has almost triumphed once, propelling Catherine to her first suicide attempt. With Zero only temporarily restrained by the latest med du jour, time is running out. In an old ballet shoebox, Catherine stockpiles meds, preparing to take her own life when Zero next arrives.

But Zero’s return is delayed. Unexpected relationships along with the care of a new psychiatrist start to alter Catherine's perception of her diagnosis. But will this be enough? This is a story of loss and grief and hope and how the many shapes of love – maternal, romantic and platonic – impact a young woman’s struggle with mental illness.

The manuscript was awarded the 2014 SCBWI Work-in-Progress Grant in the Contemporary YA category, named a finalist in the 2015 Tassey-Walden Awards and won the Serendipity Literary Agency 2013 YA First Page/Novel Discovery Contest.

The Weight Of Zero.

This book was so brilliantly written. This book sheds light onto mental illness. It allows those who aren't really sure how certain people with a mental illness feel, to see what it feels like. Catherine is bipolar, with that comes manic depression, or manic joy depending on the swing of her mood. When people hear bipolar they tend to think crazy, or someone who really has just no control over anything. While this shows what is going on in her mind. Her thoughts are all clear, and their all her own. But she fears her disorder.

When Catherine starts to get a life, one in which she has friends and a love interest, things start to change for her. While she's battling the illness on her own she's seeing that there is more to life than just waiting for The Weight Of Zero.

Everyone always says that those with the illness needs to talk to people around them - yes it will help but it's not always easy.  This book is the best example of that. Catherine starts forming a group of people who would be there for her, and who would be able to help her out of her chronic depression, through her mania's, through everything. But she still doesn't trust them. She would rather keep everything in and eat her away then to tell someone else. To let someone else into her world.

This book opens the door to a topic that so many people shy  away from. There's a stigma when it comes to mental illnesses, and that stigma is something that we should work towards getting rid of. And I think this book does just that.

Book Review: The Sun is Also a Stay by Nicola Yoon

The Sun is Also a Star
Author: Nicola Yoon
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: November 1st 2016
Review Source: Delacorte Press

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

There is one thing you need to know, when you pick up a Nicola Yoon book you will never be disappointed. From the first page my mind instantly transported back to being sixteen and experiencing being young again with our characters. Natasha and Daniel’s paths cross one fateful day in New York, and Daniel believes it’s love at first sight, that this is what stories are made of, I mean he’s a poet even, he lives for this kind of stuff. Natasha on the other hand doesn’t believe in love, doesn’t believe in fate and only believes in science, and today is an important day, not a day to fall in love.

The Sun is Also a Star follows a few perspectives, Daniel and Natasha and a few people they encounter throughout their day in city. Natasha is on an impossible mission to keep her family from getting deported but with twelve hours until she’s set to leave she’s grasping at straws. Daniel is suppose to be attending an extremely important interview with a Yale alumni, he’s parents are very strict on his path to medicine, but Daniel doesn’t know if that’s what he wants to do forever, with his passion lying with writing poetry. Daniel is somewhat of a romantic, believes in fate, and signs, so when his train conductor makes an announcement to find God and save yourself everyone exited the plane and that’s when he notices Natasha.

My absolute favorite part of The Sun is Also a Star was the chapters that weren’t Natasha and Daniel. I know weird, but she brings in a few characters that played a part in Natasha and Daniel’s day but not only that she gave you culture and then gave you the meaning and the history, she educated you. She brings life to her pages and transports you to these characters lives. I always get so wrapped up in her books that I’m finding myself holding back tears throughout the entire book.

If you’re a fan of Gayle Forman’s Just One Day this book is going to be your next favorite. I advise any and all to pick up The Sun is Also a Star and then while you’re add it just add Everything Everything into your cart.

P.S. - These are seriously the most gorgeous book covers ever. Hands. Down.
