Summer on East End #2
Author: Melissa de la Cruz
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: November 8th 2016
Review Source: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers

The sultry sequel to Triple Moon from #1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

Twin witches Mardi and Molly Overbrook are back for another summer in North Hampton, and this year they’re serious about two things: avoiding trouble and dedicating themselves to rest and relaxation. Molly’s headed to Aunt Ingrid’s, while Mardi has convinced their father, Troy—a.k.a. Thor, the god of thunder—to let her crash with her boyfriend, Trent, who also happens to be Tyr, the god of war. It’s a tangled web they weave, but that’s to be expected where gods and goddesses are concerned.

Their vacation’s just begun when an old secret is revealed, leaving Molly and Mardi to question everything they’ve ever known about their family. Then a hot new guy comes to town and starts brewing even more trouble . . . and soon enough, the twins are back to their old tricks.

After an ancient prophecy comes to light, Molly and Mardi notice some mysterious changes, changes that will put their sisterhood to the ultimate test. East End’s shaping up to be much more exciting than the girls were bargaining for, but what’s a summer in the Hamptons without a little magic and mischief?

Interview

Name 3 things about yourself that your readers may not know?
1. This year I joined the Los Angeles board of Facing History, Facing Ourselves, which is an organization that promotes a school curriculum of empathy, tolerance and social justice to four million school children across the country. I’m very proud to be part of this wonderful and much needed charity.
2. My favorite color is fuchsia.
3. When I was a teenager I wanted to name my future children Arwen Evenstar and Legolas Greenleaf. I’m still a bit sad I didn’t! LOL

What has been your biggest challenge in writing your series?
Honestly it’s a joy writing the Witches of East End series, and now its spinoff Summer on East End, I am a huge Norse mythology nerd and enjoy all the ways I can use and twist the mythology to tell my story. I saw that Booklist called my series Percy Jackson meets Gossip Girl, although really it should be Magnus Chase meets Dynasty. J

Without giving out spoilers, do you have a favorite scene from DOUBLE ECLIPSE book? Can you give us hints so we can pay close attention?
I love the scene with the whale. I think that’s a spoiler but it is really surprising. You don’t see that whale coming I swear!

Just for fun: If you could go back into time where would you go and who would you see?
To meet JK Rowling at that café where she used to write Harry Potter, I’d offer to babysit her kid so she could concentrate!

Do you have any closing thoughts or final remarks you’d like to share with your readers?
Just that it is a joy to meet them all my events and I’m always so honored by their enthusiasm. I love meeting them!

Book Review: Stolen by Melissa de la Cruz + Michael Johnston

Stolen
Heart of Dread #2
Author: Melissa de la Cruz, Michael Johnston
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: November 18th 2014
Review Source: Penguin Young Readers Group

Who is Eliza Wesson?

Months after Nat and Wes said good-bye on the shores of the Blue, Nat is learning how to control and use her new power. She and her drakon are the last of their kind—and she’s risked her life for their reunion. When she receives a mysterious distress call, she races to help, soliciting the guidance of her new friend, the beautiful and aloof Faix Lazaved of the Blue.

Still heartbroken over losing Nat, Wes is racing cars on a New Vegas racetrack while his team is scattered and lost. When he finds out that his sister, Eliza, is being held in the golden domes of El Dorado, he does what he’s best at—running to her side—and gambles on luck to see him through one more time.

Magic, romance, and danger collide as Nat and Wes become entangled in a dark new adventure that leads right to the heart of the mystery of their frozen, broken world. They soon discover that the answer to both their quests lies in the same question: Who is Eliza Wesson—what is she capable of, and why was she stolen from her family so long ago?

Can I get legally married with a book cover? Highly doubt it, but that is how much I love this cover. The change in the cover of this book is amazing! I’m not into the whole changing the covers for sequels, but I love how shiny the books are now. I’m all about cute covers that will blow my socks off. I love the facts that I got so hooked to Stolen just like I did with Frozen.

This sequel revolves around the mystery regarding Wes sister, Elissa, who was kidnapped when she was younger. Nat is now out there with her drakon discovering all the new powers she possess and what she can do with them. After the sad goodbye between Wes and Nat, Wes is now without a team and participating in dangerous race cars. After he hears information about her sister, he decides to follow the information given to him.

*SLOW CLAP* Thank you Melissa De La Cruz and Michael Johnston for still giving me a badass Nat. When I tell you this book got me hooked is because of Nat is this badass girl with badass powers. A girl that can kicks butt is the best quality that a character can have. This is a strong girl that gave up something so she could be free and help people in the Blue. Wes is this adorable/badass that I loved since Frozen. The situation that he is now in this second book lets you see this totally different side of him that is outstanding. His character has gone through hard stuff and it’s good to see how he is doing now.

The writing in this book is just outstanding. I found myself liking the same things that I did when I read Frozen. I can picture this world, I can see Nat flying around on her drakon and that is a wonderful thing that Melissa De La Cruz and Michael Johnston can do at the moment of writing. They are not only telling a story, they are showing with their words of how big and powerful this world is.

I totally recommend The Heart of Dread series. This is a series that will take you into the world that you are reading and will totally make you proud reading a badass girl-character.

Book Review: Vampires of Manhattan by Melissa de la Cruz

Vampires of Manhattan
The New Blue Bloods Coven #1
Author: Melissa de la Cruz
Reading Level: New Adult | Adult
Genre: Paranormal
Released: September 9th 2014
Review Source: Hyperion Books | Goldberg McDuffie

The Vampires of Manhattan is "hipster horror"--the memorable characters from her Blue Bloods series are older and cooler than before, trying to build "Millennial" lives in the bustle of Manhattan while battling forces of evil and, of course, each other.

Hero of this sexy, paranormal action tale is Oliver Hazard-Perry, former human conduit, and Manhattan's only human-turned-vampire, now the head of the Blue Bloods Coven. When his all-too-human lover is found murdered on the eve of the coven's annual Four Hundred Ball--a celebration meant to usher in a new era in vampire society, and to mark the re-unification of the Coven after decades of unrest and decay--Oliver is devastated.

Now, not only is he trying to create a new world order for the immortal elite, he's the prime suspect and is stalked by the newly installed head of the vampire secret police. Because according to the new rules, vampires who take human life can now be executed. Burned.

How can an immortal sentenced to die fight back? He has to find the killer--and the answers lie deep in vampire lore.

It was strange starting Vampires of Manhattan. Reading Blue Bloods where all main characters were teenagers to now where they’re all grown up sophisticated urban elite in Vampires of Manhattan. Usually once the series ends that’s it, it’s finished and you don’t get re-visits. So that was a nice change to get a new series of them 10 years down the line. Though if you plan on reading the Blue Blood’s series I wouldn’t recommend reading this book first. It will spoil a lot of things (unless you don’t mind that), but saying that, I think this book will be liked by both sides. I think those who enjoyed Blue Bloods will enjoy reading this series but also those who didn’t. I think enough information was included that new readers can enjoy this book without getting horribly lost in the plot. The plot wasn’t complex but easy to follow.

After ten years of peace, something went wrong. Strange things are happening, a body is found and pentagrams are appearing mysteriously. An artist is missing, the young girl is dead and a sinister drug is popping up. Something is clearly wrong with all these odd things happening.

The thing I loved about this book: some of the things which were briefly mentioned in Blue Bloods—and never got a real explanation to—were fleshed out in Vampires of Manhattan. I’d say this book is more of de la Cruz’s “adult” work (think Witches of East End) and you can tell this was intended to be more grown up, like her writing grew with the characters. Though this book was a good edition to the Blue Bloods world, you don’t have to read it. If you’d rather leave Schuyler (and company) where Gates of Paradise ended, it’s all good!
