Firewalker
The Worldwalker Trilogy #2
Author: Josephine Angelini
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: September 1st 2015
Review Source: Feiwel & Friends

Worlds divide, magic slays, and love lies in the second book of Josephine Angelini’s The Worldwalker Trilogy.

"You think I’m a monster, but my choices, as ruthless as they seem, are justified."

Lily is back in her own universe, and she's ready to start a new life with Rowan by her side. True, she almost died in the Pyre that fueled their escape from New Salem, and must hide her magic for the safety of everyone she cares about, but compared to fighting the Woven, the monstrous creatures inhabiting the alternate Salem, life is looking pretty good.

Unfortunately, Lillian, ruthless ruler of the 13 Cities, is not willing to let Lily go that easily. If she can’t persuade Lily to return to her world, she will force her to come back by doing away with the ones she loves.

Picking up right where Trial By Fire left off, Firewalker is another sexy, fast-paced, heartbreaking thrill ride from internationally bestselling author Josephine Angelini!
INTERVIEW

1. What were your biggest challenges in writing Fire Walker?

The beginning!  For me, getting the beginning of a book right is so hard.  I’m a plotter, so I always know what my major turning points and reversals are going to be, and as a result I always rush the start of the book so I can get to the juicy bits.  I always have to go back and fix my beginnings.

2. Has Lily changed at all from Trial by Fire to Firewalker?

Enormously.  She’s suffering from PTSD, and who wouldn’t be after what she went through?  I have a hard time believing books that ignore the messy fall-out of a tortured main character.  One of the things that I wanted to do with this series was to test the validity of the saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”  Lillian isn’t stronger after what she went through.  Is Lily?  Let’s find out.

3. I've got to ask a fun question. If you could have a super power, what would it be?

I used to always say flying because of my first series, Starcrossed, but now I’m thinking it would be mindspeak.

Make sure to add the live stream on your calendar or if you're in South Florida to be at Books & Books!

Play Lists created by Josephine Angelini

I always feel bad when I put my playlists together. I have fringe taste when it comes to music and most of you will have never heard of 99% of what I have here.

I worry because I feel like you won’t be able to connect to me in music—even those of you who connect deeply to my writing—and it will make you feel farther from, rather than closer to, my stories. That sentiment goes double for this book. I had to do go deep-dish weird to make this world come alive in my imagination, but what sparks my imagination may not spark yours. I guess it just goes to show that everyone has some strange on the inside.

Firewalker playlist:
Pendulum by F.K.A. Twigs. She’s got such a witchy, sexy sound. Love it. It’s very Lily and Rowan. This song and Two Weeks got a lot of play while I wrote. Two Weeks has explicit lyrics so I’m not officially saying it’s on the playlist. But it’s on my playlist, if you ken.

Push Pull by Purity Ring. This song speaks to the tension between Lily and Rowan in the first act of the book.

Stranger Than Earth, also by Purity Ring, was another song that I listened to a lot. Alotta lot. Got me pumped up to write a ton of action sequences.

White Lies by ODESZA. There’s some lying going on in this book. Tough to do with a bunch of telepaths, btw.

The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. You’re never supposed to break the chain, but someone breaks the chain. ‘Nuff said.

Other People by Beach House. They aren’t going to keep in touch.

Gun by CHVRCHES. What Lily has to become.

No Name No. 5 by Elliot Smith. Oh, the sadness, the loneliness. Crossing the country.

Plague by Crystal Castles. The final fight. I imagine the Hive rising on the horizon when I listen to this song.

Never Mess With Sunday by Yppah. A “fade to black” song as the coven arrives at an unknown destination.

Trial by Fire Playlist:
Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. It would be what Lily would say to Tristan at the beginning of the book. More than that, I listened to the White Witch a lot while I was writing this. I heart Stevie Nicks.

Aereal Boundaries by Michael Hedges. Maybe what it feels like to travel through universes, weightless and disembodied.

Fineshrine by Purity Ring. When I was writing the scene when Lily claims Rowan in the cabin I must have listened to this song a hundred times. This whole album, Shrines, was my soundtrack for Trial by Fire. I listened to it on repeat pretty much the whole time. It’s witchy sounding and the lyrics are like spells.

Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush. Maybe what it feels like when Lily and Rowan fight as one.

Below It by Peter Broderick. Vulnerable and private—like Lily and Rowan feel the morning after the claiming.

Bridges by Broods. Lots of betrayal in this song. Ah, men. Trust is such a big issue.

Archangel by Burial. Another “witchy”, watery-sounding song that I played on repeat while writing the ritual scene in Rowan’s apartment. Sexy, but creepy.

Fascination Street by The Cure. Club scene. Also, Disintegration is one of my all-time favorite albums, so it needs a giant shout-out.

Recover by CHVRCHES. Lily wakes in Alaric’s camp. She’s different after the oubliette. Harder.
Saltkin by Purity Ring. Lily claiming an army.
Gorilla by Clams Casino. Dark and dissonant—this song was on repeat while I wrote the final battle scene.

Trail by Fire (The Worldwalker Trilogy #1):

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergiesmake it increasingly difficult to live a normal life, and after a completely humiliating incident ruins her first (and perhaps only) real party, she's ready to disappear.

"Come and be the most powerful person in the world."

Suddenly, Lily finds herself in a different Salem. One overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women--including Lillian, this world's version of Lily.

"It will be terrifying. It was for me."

What made Lily weak at home, makes her extraordinary here. It also puts her in terrible danger. Faced with new responsibilites she can barely understand and a love she never expeceted, Lily is left with one question: How can she be the savior of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy?

Fire Walker (The Worldwalker Trilogy #2):
Worlds divide, magic slays, and love lies in the second book of Josephine Angelini’s The Worldwalker Trilogy.

You think I’m a monster, but my choices, as ruthless as they seem, are justified.

Lily is back in her own universe, and she's ready to relax with Rowan. True, she almost died in the Pyre that fueled their escape, and must hide her magic for the safety of the world, but compared to fighting the monstrous Woven and leading armies in the alternate Salem, life is looking good.

Trial by Fire as of today is my favorite YA book of 2014. What a stellar book to read. I was completely memorized from beginning to end. Days later I still can't stop thinking about what I read and the ending. Picturing all these scenarios for the next book that I wished I could magically make it appear in my hands already. Angelini really outdid herself when she created this new world full is magic and witches and creatures that go bump in the night. I loved her writing already from her Starcrossed series but this new series just sealed the deal in blood.

The one thing that I do when I begin to read supernatural or paranormal themed books is, I ask myself can I picture every details like if it was a movie? And without a doubt Trial by Fire would be perfect for Hollywood. So many elements that would transfer over to the big screen but the fantastic storyline. Hollywood could go to town with the special effects. I truly recommend this book to anyone young or old, male or female. I think it's powerful enough to convert a contemporary romance reader to like paranormal/supernatural. The combination of strong story, tough heroine and amazing world really does enamor the reader.

Trial by Fire follows the life of Lily Proctor. Poor Lily hasn't had an easy life. She suffers from so many illness and allergies that anything triggers an attack or she gets sick for days. Her friends and family protect her nonstop but one night it's just not enough and Lily is crushed and gets so ill she is ready to give up. But their is this voice in her head which is very convincing and before you know it Lily is no longer in the Salem she has known all her life. She has been jumped to a different Salem with creatures and things she never imagine could exist. Oh and did I mention the voice in her head was the Lily or Lillian from that world that needed her and magically brought her over. Turns out the Lillian from that version of Salem is a powerful crucible and she is the strongest of them all. Her say is the law or you pay the consequences. But thing is Lillian is sick now and brought Lily over for a purpose. Of course Lillian didn't plan for Lily to create her own path and assumptions and that lead her to Rowan (swoon) that at first wasn't a believer but them everything changed and Lily with Roman help must save that world from Lillian. That's all the input your getting from me. Anymore and I start giving key elements away.

Trial by Fire will win you over like it did me. I can't remember the last book about witches and Magic that won me over so hard and easily. I cannot wait to read the sequel after such an ending. I need more Lily and Rowan in my life. A must read for 2014!
