Book Review: Hex Hall

Hex Hall
Hex Hall #1
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Pages: 323 pgs
Reading Level: YA
Published: March 2nd 2010
Review Source: Purchased

This is probably one of the funniest books Ive read in the last couple of months. The characters in Hex Hall are real enjoyable to read. Now the whole book is not all fun and giggles, Rachel creates lots of tension and mystery in the pages as well. There is a great amount of teenage angst but it doesn't over power the book, which is a plus. I think it has some similarities to other great books that have been written but still brings its own unique flavor to the table. The story feels believable but just a tad juvenile at times.

The main character Sophie is sent away to a special reform school for people like her. She is a Witch, a very untrained witch at that. She is sent away because of a love spell gone wrong of course at her regular school. So she arrives at Hecate Hall and meets many other in her situation. You have Witches, Warlocks, Fairies, Shifters and Vampires. This don't start well for Sophie at Hex Hall, she has different situations come up with students at teh school and on top pf that she starts to fall for the one guy she shouldn't. Archer is the guy she should stay away from, but how can she. He sounds perfect. Well I can't be further from the truth. All the secondary character are also fun to read about. This book will completely surprise you with how it ends, you won't see it coming. Thank goodness Demonglass releases tomorrow and I also get to meet Rachel Friday at a book signing. Can you say excited!

Summary: Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Book Review: Dreams of a Dark Warrior

Dreams of a Dark Warrior
Immortals after Dark #11
Author: Kresley Cole
Pages: 515 pgs
Reading Level: Adult
Published: February 15th 2011
Review Source: Gallery Books

Latest installment of the series Immortals After Dark is phenomenally fantastic. Can be read as a standalone but highly recommend to read the previous 10 books to learn and understand better the history behind this fantasy world created by Cole. This installment is about the love  story between Regin the Radiant a Valkyrie  and Aidan the Fierce a Berserker that was curse but transcended centuries. She is an Immortal and he is not and after every time they consummate their love he dies, but only to reincarnate again and again.  His fight with time is to gain his immortality to finally be with his only mate forever. But not so simple the person he reincarnates in, Declan, hates immortals and is in the hunt to eliminate them all. He will need to redeem himself, gain the love of Regin  and avoid losing himself completely to the memories of  Aidan in order  to prevent his demise again.
A most read if you like to read about immortal creatures of all kind and if you like a fast pace, packed with action and  romance story. As always the sexual scenes are explicit and steamy but backed by romance , love and sacrifice. If you are not a fan yet, this book will definitely  make you one and leave you feeling the withdrawal for more.

Summary: HE VOWED HED COME FOR HER . . .

Murdered before he could wed Regin the Radiant, warlord Aidan the Fierce seeks his beloved through eternity, reborn again and again into new identities, yet with no memory of his past lives.

SHE AWAITS HIS RETURN . . .

When Regin encounters Declan Chase, a brutal Celtic soldier, she recognizes her proud warlord reincarnated. But Declan takes her captive, intending retribution against all immortals—unaware that he belongs to their world.

TO SATE A DESIRE MORE POWERFUL THAN DEATH . . .

Yet every reincarnation comes with a price, for Aidan is doomed to die when he remembers his past. To save herself from Declan’s torments, will Regin rekindle memories of the passion they once shared—even if it means once again losing the only man she could ever love?

Book Tour: Darkness Becomes Her Grand Prize Giveaway and Top Ten

Today we have saved the best for last. Kelly Keaton is ending with a bang her book Darkness Becomes Her tour. Thanks to Kelly you will have a great chance at winning a big Grand Prize. Are you ready to know what Kelly is giving away for her fans??? Well first you will have to read what are the Top Ten reason Kelly chose New Orleans for her book.

Top Ten List:

What are your Top Ten reason's for choosing New Orleans for you book?

Mardi Gras - How can you not love Mardi Gras? The atmosphere, the Old World echoes of Carnival in Venice, the imagery, the floats, costumes and masks... it's very inspiring, alluring, and mysterious.
Cemeteries - The above ground cemeteries in NOLA are filled with eerie tombs and vaults, some like gothic churches in miniature. They are cities of the dead, row after row, tomb after tomb, and the entire atmosphere is haunting and yet strangely beautiful.
Climate - There's nothing like setting a story in a sultry, tropical environment. The lush plants, the heat and humidity; it all adds a level of tension and wildness.
Architecture - In NOLA there is such a blend of influences in the architecture. Creole townhouses with their iron balconies and big courtyards, the shotgun houses, mansions of the Garden District - everything from Greek revival and Italianate to American Colonial and Victorian.
Garden District - One of my favorite places in the city! Talk about LUSH. The old trees, the amazing homes, the gardens... The feeling you get is like you've been transported to another age. History and grandeur in abundance.
French Quarter - Also one of my favorite places! There is such a mix of Old World charm, liveliness, heat, history and the buildings are incredible.
History - NOLA has such a rich history unlike anywhere else in this country. First a French colony, then Spanish, then again French until Napoleon sold it in the Louisiana Purchase. It's a massive port city, once home to pirates and voodoo queens, and the Antebellum age...
Plantations - Go down the River Road and you find Oak Hall, San Francisco, Destrehan, Laura Plantation houses, and more. It's like going down a romantic road that leads into the antebellum past.
The swamps - Never far from the city, the swamps are places of beauty and danger and the idea that these could one day creep closer and closer... well, it only adds to the tension and the air of wildness about the place.
The people/culture - The cultures that collided in New Orleans are found nowhere else. French, Spanish, African... The emergence of Creole, the cuisine, the music, the language, the Cajuns/Acadians. So many things, cultures, peoples, found their home or their birth in the city of New Orleans.

What a great list! Thank you Kelly. Now are you ready for the Grand Prize. Read below then.

Book Review: A World Without Heroes

A World Without Heroes
Beyonders #1
Author: Brandon Mull
Pages: 464 pgs
Reading Level: MG
Release Date: March 15th 2011
Review Source: Simon & Schuster

This is a book I will be sharing with my son. It was Great. I think the pace is perfect for younger children, for Adults I would say a tad slow. The details are each to picture in your head while you read. The adventure describe is a bit dark but very entertaining. The characters are easy to like.
The book is great if you love to read about new worlds. Plenty of imagination and creativity are thrown in the book. The humor is a great part also that balances out the dark parts of the book. So again if you want to be able to share a book with your child, you have a winner here.

Summary: (from goodreads) Jason Walker has often wished his life could be a bit less predictable--until a routine day at the zoo ends with Jason suddenly transporting from the hippo tank to a place unlike anything he's ever seen. In the past, the people of Lyrian welcomed visitors from the Beyond, but attitudes have changed since the wizard emperor Maldor rose to power. The brave resistors who opposed the emperor have been bought off or broken, leaving a realm where fear and suspicion prevail.
In his search for a way home, Jason meets Rachel, who was also mysteriously drawn to Lyrian from our world. With the help of a few scattered rebels, Jason and Rachel become entangled in a quest to piece together the word of power that can destroy the emperor, and learn that their best hope to find a way home will be to save this world without heroes.

Book Review: Whisper of Light

Whisper of Light
Light #2
Author: Jennifer DeLucy
Pages: 261 pgs
Reading Level: YA
Published: October 25th 2010
Review Source: Omnific Publishing

Whisper of Light is the second book in “The Light Series” and just like the first book, it did not disappoint, although, I liked Seers of Light better.  Jennifer DeLucy again does a fantastic job describing the characters and their surroundings and making the reader feel like they are in the story.  I recommend you read “Seers of Light” first before reading this one because some of the first book’s characters and their story carry on into this book.

Whisper of Light is the story about Nicole and Christian.  If you read Seers of Light you would know who Christian is and understand why he chose to leave Pennsylvania and come to live with Wendell and his Sentiments in California.  I don’t want to say why because I don’t want to spoil the first book, but I will say that Christian was looking for a new beginning.  Nicole’s father, Duncan (which she only refers to him by his first name in the book) is the biggest jerk ever and treats her like crap.  You see, Nicole’s parents are both Sentiments and she just turned 29 and has yet to know is she is one too.  For that reason, her father belittles her, calls her weak and treats her horribly.  Also, Nicole’s mother was injured by an evil Astral while trying to save Nicole and for that reason, Nicole has always felt responsible and guilty for her mother’s illness.  So now because of guilt, she has let herself go and isn’t worried about her own life.  That is until Christian comes around and together they overcome their own issues.

While reading, there were times where I laughed, cried and other times where I wanted to slap Duncan in the head.  I have to admit that when I finished the book, I was sad because I felt like I wanted more.  I kept waiting until the very end, but nothing.  Overall this book was really good and I totally recommend it

Summary: The saying goes that all men are created equal... but Nicole Abbot knows better. Lacking the supernatural gifts of the Sentients she has known all her life, Nicole has lived with her nose pressed to the glass, withering beneath the guilt of her own inadequacies and the disapproving glare of her father. It's easy to believe that the universe has forgotten all about her, but things are not always as they seem. With the arrival of Christian Wright, a handsome but complex Combatant with a troubled history, Nicole is forced to question everything she has ever believed about herself, proving that sometimes, our most flawed perceptions are those reflected in a mirror.

Jennifer DeLucy again plunges us into the world of lingering spirits, dark apparitions, and malicious vampires. But this time she takes us to the California coast where we get to know a new ensemble of gifted souls that are just as vibrant and endearing as the Sentients we came to love in Seers of Light. In Whisper of Light, DeLucy delivers exciting supernatural encounters as well as very human interactions that will both break your heart and make it soar.

Reading Nook of the Week: Ambur at Burning.x.Impossibly.x.Bright.

Reading Nook of the Week

Today on Reading Nook of the week, we have the pleasure of bringing you Ambur from Burning.x.Impossibly.x.Bright blog.

Ambur: I’m a big fan of sitting in bed and reading a good book. As you can see from the pictures I have two beds, one is at my family’s house, which I call home, and the other is at my house in the city where I stay while I have school during the week. I usually have a stack of books by the bed, but I’ve tidied up and read a bunch of my stacks lately because I just had holidays. I also decided to leave my bed unmade in the city picture to add authenticity. ;) I just love being all warm and cozy while reading. My dogs also like to cuddle while I read at home, they posed just for you guys, sorry about their crazy eyes though. :P

Those are some great reading areas you have got there. The reading companion is pretty neat too. I wonder what the dog favorite book might be. Thank you for sharing with us today. Make sure you reader stop on by Ambur's blog and say hello. You can see all the books that Ambur has reviewed on her blog.

Author Interview and giveaway: Reena Jacobs author of Shadow Cat

We are happy today to Welcome author Reena Jacobs to Once Upon a Twilight. Reena took some time out and answered some great questions for us today. She is the author of Shadow Cat a new series she has started working on. Shadow Cat was just released in January of this year.

Reena Jacobs Links:
Shadow Cat is available on Smashwords, Barnes & Noble and Amazon

Welcome Reena!

OUaT:  In Shadow Cat which character did you enjoy writing and which was your least favorite to write?

Reena: Hands down, Bryan was my favorite character to write. On the surface, he’s a bit laid back, but it’d be a mistake to think he’s a pushover. He’s just one who picks and chooses his battles wisely, making him a great joy to work with.
Eric was my problem child. He’s stubborn and self-centered. I really had to pound him in order to get him to see beyond his own wants. Of all the characters, I had to do the most cutting and revising with him. The guy just couldn’t seem to understand that no one likes a jerk.

OUaT: How did you come up with the concept of Shadow Cat?

Reena: I love shape-shifter books, and wild cats have always been my favorite animal. In many ways, the cart came before the horse with this one. :) When I settled on a tiger, I spent a lot of time researching folklore and came across the Malay concept of orang belang which translates to “the striped ones.” The more research I put in, the more the story came together.

OUaT: Where do you hope to take your writing to in the future?

Reena: The more I write, the more I learn about myself. I’m not a genre loyalist, but I do love writing about relationships. Currently I’m working on the sequel to Shadow Cat which I’ve entitled Chasing Shadows (Mujur’s story). Hopefully I’ll finish the rough draft of Chasing Shadows this month. I plan to tentatively conclude the Striped Ones series with Bryan’s story, which I’ve already written, at least the first draft.:)
Beyond the Striped Ones, I have several interrelated stories, two of which I’ve started. Some of the characters have cameo appearances in Bryan’s story.
Then I have my love child, a story called “I Loved You First.” I should have the rough draft of that finished sometime next month. It’s a coming of age novel. I let my daughter pick the names for many of the characters, and she’s not at all happy with the storyline I’ve picked for them.

OUaT: How did you come up with the name Berani and does it have a meaning?

Reena: Berani’s name, as well as the other wehr-tigers in the Striped Ones series (except for Bryan), does have a meaning. For Berani, I wanted a name which had a feminine and foreign feel (at least when it came to American readers). Her name translates to the word “brave” in Malay, which is one of her strongest strengths but also her weakness.

OUaT: Can you describe your book in 5 words?

Reena: Primal, adventurous, sexual, unconventional love

OUaT: What is your favorite quote?

Reena: Whatever lies beyond this morning is a little later on. Regardless of warnings, the future doesn't scare me at all. -Utada Hikaru

OUaT: When or how did you feel or decided you were going to become an Author?

Reena: Becoming an author is kind of an ongoing process for me. Finishing Shadow Cat was a wonderful moment. I’d done it! I had something to show for my efforts. Then I finished Bryan’s story and felt even more like an author. Afterward, I published a short story which was a pivotal moment. Win or lose, my work was in the public eye. Shadow Cat going live was another notch.
In my mind, I haven’t donned the official title Author (someone who writes professionally). Though I continue to push forward, I still feel like I only have one toe in the water. I don’t know when I’ll feel like a real author, but with every tiny success I come closer to that mentality.

OUaT: If you can have dinner with one person (dead or alive) who would you choose and why?

Reena: Last time someone asked me that question, I said Jesus or God. Still a good choice, because I still have lots of question. But to keep it original, let’s go with Amy Tan today. Why? Of all the books I’ve read, the Joy Luck Club is still my favorite.

OUaT: What do you like to do for fun?

Reena: I absolutely love to read. Sometimes I’m not sure what I spend more time doing—writing or reading. Oh! And picking on my husband.

OUaT: Can you recommend to my reader the one book they should read?

Reena: Any of the Immortal after Dark novels by Kresley Cole. If you haven’t read the first one, A Hunger Like No Other, I’d definitely recommend starting there. I absolutely love her story telling, and after ten books, she’s yet to let me down. I just received her 11th release in the mail, Dreams of a Dark Warrior, and can’t wait to start it.
